The most tense part of this conflict is over. The dreamers and other followers take their time to loot the camp and interrogate the many ex-slaves and guards

    resistent slaves
    Spoiler
    Show

They seem more like they lack the courage to fight back the Empire, or they greatly distrust you. They realize that resistent is futile and let themselves be captive. Sometimes they tease you by saying things like "your freedom taste like manacles"

It seems they don't trust and don't belive you. they are taking their chances of being kept alive, and later on, might get really free.

    Reaction to Xilef's slave kill
    Spoiler
    Show

Xilef came with the corpse without making a fuss, but in little time everyone in the camp knows that happened: 5 slaves tried runing away, and one of them confronted xilef when she caught them, but that guy died. the majority of the ex-slaves care little about the girl but obvious their trust is a bit shaken. Uidon and Nova speak of freedom, liberty and peace - but if you run away, the Werewolf might get you.

It seems people find you helpfull but fearsome. only time will tell is they got this gamble the right way.

Seanon is furious about Xilef. He brings her for a one-on-one talk and freaks out that the only casualty on their side was made by Xilef. He demmands her to be more considerate and tolerant next time, or else her clutches won't be so much much diferent than the iron fist of the Empire.

    hardned slaves
    Spoiler
    Show

You see that most of those are "veteran" slaves, likely held captive for years. When asked to aid the cause by fighting, they agree almost immediatly.

It seems they have their grudge on the empire, not on you. Vengance is their fuel to fight

    weak slaves
    Spoiler
    Show

These people just don't want to die, and don't want to be beaten off and forced to work. In this group there are farmers and a few crafters (that work mostly on wood or simple devices and) that will happily work on much needed suport roles to aid the cause, as long as the beating and treats stop

It seems they just want to live in peace, and you might happen to provide that. Hope is their fuel to work.

    Spoiler
    Show

Most of these surviving guards were betting that you were just slave raiders, attacking the camp to keep the slaves for yourselves (what is terribly not so far from true). Most of them quickly offer their services to you, but are concerned that the ex-slaves might get them back in no time.

They mention you that suplies were low even in the farmlands. The guards themselves were having only half rations, unless they hunt in the forest. The monthly shipment of suplies was suposed to have arrived last week...

it seems the guards would do anything to survive and hold little love for the empire. having them freely walking among the slaves might create trouble, however..

From what fresh slaves tell you, it seems that the country is on a very poor shape. bad weather brought terrible crops, an even farmers are starving. Bandits are everywere and guards hunt them dowm mostly because of the competition on robbing the weak. The Warlord who took over the crounty bleed gold out of it at the expense of people's lives...

you also find a better map of the region, showing the entere Country. you quickly find you own position with it using your old map.

Uidon watches the ex slaves for a minute as they mill around and start to sort themselves out. He leaves the ordering to the skirmishers for a minute and jogs over to the main tent. The crude map lies on a table with one side held down with a cup. The smith stands in the way of the tent flap for a moment just staring at the map.

Uidon's mind expands, the battlefield whirling and the pieces moving. New pieces with new moves dominate portions of the board. So many options to be studied that Uidon trembles slightly with excitement. He quickly rolls the map up and pushes it back into it's case to keep it safe. He strides back out grunting orders to the ex slaves rushing about, trying to keep some order about the camp. The other plunder was not so wonderful to Uidon as the map.

"Sentries, Volunteers now... We need bodies collected. Who can cook?" Uidon gets the camp in a little order with help. A few sentries are posted, a ranger with a volunteer or two. Lucky collects arms and armor, stripping the dead. The guards are pulled to a tent; bound, gagged and stripped for the moment. Uidon oversees this to keep the kicks and blows from being deadly or excessive. "Their time is soon." Uidon will murmur menacingly.

Piles of supplies and tents continue to grow and move through the night. The gate is closed once more on the pen, keeping the resistant slaves in the dark about what happens. Quickly the camp starts to turn itself into something new....

Xilef place the corpse of the man she killed inside an assemblage of fabric taken from a tent to better transport it when they get back to camp. After that she put it in a corner and told the nearest ex-slave to not touch it.
Once that is done she make a small announcement, "A few minute ago you've seen me chase after some of you that try to run. I didn't do so because I want to capture you but because if I had let them get away they would have been killed or captured in short order. When I give chase one of them attacked me and I react, as a result he died. But tomorow I will revive him. If I can do so will that prove our willingness to help youi ?"
She say nothing else after that, simply glaring at anyone that ask a question. If the other ask she will help in torturing the guards for information.

the ex-slaves ahve a mix of disbelif and hope on xilef's words. could she bring back the dead?

meanwhile the helpfull ex-slaves put themselves to work. by early afternoon, the camp is dismantled with all the valueble parts on the carts, ready to be moved by summoned mounts.

One of the elderly ex-slaves says he heard much about the spirit of the ancient woods. It is suposed to prevent major disturbances in the woods, but this lumber camp does not seem to have attracted his attention. He says that once, on his youth, a large fire on the dry season was burning a huge part of the forest. when about 1/10 of the entire forest was reduced to ashes, a sudden storm came out of nowhere and put the fire down. the storm raged for a week, and during this period this ex-slave says many trees were simply moving arround looking for the spark that started the fire. Legend says the spirit of the ancient woods was within each of those trees... or each of those trees were following orders from the spirit..

(The surviving guards are still waiting for the interrogation/torture. You can sense the tension from the liberated slaves, meaning to slaughter the old guards)

making their choice, they are set free with many ex-slaves forming a circle-ring. (OOC: there's no need for rolls. the guards trow themselves at Korin one by one with bare hands. How will Korin fight them off?)

The Smith takes his task as the quartermaster with a feeling of relief. He catalogs the various tools and items trying to separate those axes, spades and rakes that will be critical to their survival.

When Uidon sees Korin begin to separate out the slavers he is at first concerned. But then the idea takes hold. The slaves get to test their mettle and get a public beating. He folds his arms and stops to watch, wondering how this will work out.

Korin's fistfights witht eh slavers are bloody and brutal. Each slaver thinks he has it best when it comes to their turn, but in the end all are totally defeated - beaten senseless and tied up again. If korin decided to blast and eletrecute, those slavers would get so scared they would desist the fighitng, but in the end they were fooled.

3 of the slavers decide to go under whatever test korin decides, but that is left for later. The 7 defeated ones are trown into the middle of the sand ring for execution, but Elkal explodes them with a sudden fireball nearly crisping the chest hair of bystanders.

By this time, the camp is enterely packed up and ready to move.

Elkal separetes that resistent group from the others and leads the resistent slaves to the edge of the forest. The others head back to the tower, fully loaded.

The traveling takes a while (2 days) but you manage it withou facing any really dangerous creatures. a few large wild animals are seen as you march but the size of your group scares them away. Shortly after you arrive at the tower, the new followers start waiting for xilef's ressurection in great anticipation. Korin's trials are also anticipated - but some followers don't like like the idea... too much bad blood between them and the old guards.

Elkal safely lands the resistent ex-slaves to the edge of the forest. they are deeply thankfull and say they will never forget what they have done. Then, he has to make a long way back on his own but he handles it remarkably well. He's a woodsman afterall and reach the tower back from the forest edge in 2 more days.

(Xilef describe and roll the reincarnate spell. Korin describe the rituals. I belive we could craft stuff for a month then?)

Before leaving the freed slaves at the forest's edge Elkal asks them to please not tell anyone about what they are doing.

Elkal casts fly and fly-runs as much as possible to hasten his return to camp, and spends most of his time thinking about what to do next. Once he arrives he calls together his fellow Dreamers and proposes the following:

"We have enough followers now that we need to establish some sort of labor schedule. It isn't fair to have them work non-stop, and it isn't fair for them not to work at all, either. I propose this, starting from tomorrow--I honestly don't know what day it is, but let's call it Day One of Seven. One, rest. Two, work. Three, work. Four, rest. Five, work. Six, work. Seven, rest.

The hardened followers should be professional soldiers and train every work day. If we are to free this land we will need more than a militia, we will need an army.

As for the rest, I suggest three possibilities. One, have a meeting with the whole assembly of followers and have them sign up for jobs, limited by the condition that each job have a quarter of the whole population--around 10 by my reckoning. Each will have one job that they do every work day. Two, each morning have the followers sign up for jobs on a first come, first serve basis, again limited by the same condition. Three, assign each follower a job either permanently or daily. I dislike option three because it seems like slavery to me; I prefer options one and two because they give freedom and choice.

Either way, in my mind the obvious jobs are Gather, Craft, Farm, and Train.
" He explains each in turn. "I will continue cast my spells as necessary for our crafting, and the followers assigned to Craft will aid my unseen Crafters until their own abilities improve.

That said, the question arises of what to do with the 'rest' days. Naturally each of us, our followers included, will make that determination for their own selves. For instance, I am a worshipper of the Great Bear, a totem spirit honored by the tribe I come from. From that old ex-slave's legend of the spirit of this forest, I determine that what I and my people call the Great Bear is the same spirit. Generally I pay homage to the Great Bear through private rituals once a week, and I invite any who are interested in doing so to join me on Day Seven of the proposed schedule.
    "

After he finishes his long speech, he takes a deep breath and a drink of water from his waterskin.

"I have other ideas about crafting and whatnot, but I want to deal with this first."

Korin closes his eyes in thought as Elkal speaks. "There are many spirits that guide us. Just as you follow the bear, Xilef follows the cat, and I follow my ancestors. A shrine to the spirits would certainly be welcome."

"On the subject of crafting, have you considered making traps? A few portable traps could prove invaluable for ambushes and defending our bases."

    Korin's trials:
    • Three days fasting and meditating in darkness. If possible, make some kind of hallucinogenic incense to intensify the experience.
    • Rest to regain strength.
    • Intense physical training, pushing their bodies to the limit.
    • Rest to regain strength again.
    • Trial by fire. Walking over hot coals while flames burn around you.

Korin will probably be unavailable for the next few days, since he'll be putting himself through these trials too.

Uidon nods to Elkal's proposal. "Rotate their off days. One group has today off. Another tomorrow. Then we are always working, some resting. Groups sound fine, but all should learn weapons, if only a little." Uidon stops and thinks, "If we value freedom, let some move tasks. New talents may be uncovered. Option one is how we should do this. We are the Dreamers, some should dream more. Others will know their tasks. Just ask again maybe day 15..." Uidon's mind turns gears and he grunts slightly, "Lazy ones, they'll suffer the lash of disdain, of being ignored."

Uidon pauses when the rest of the Dreamers start to declare their personal philosophies. He hadn't stopped to think about what he would do with a day off. The concept seemed foriegn. He stops to think and ideas blossom in his mind. A flower of metal, twisted baskets of fine silver thread, geometric patterns of bronze and hammered copper pots with broken shackles embossed across them. A beautiful sword. "I. Uh. I'll... make art." Uidon says slowly, tasting the word, "The Dream will guide me otherwise, but I don't know it's... rights. Freedom, idle moments. That is a true reward." Uidon smiles slightly.

Xilef approve Elkal shedule and will add that she will help train people particularly gathering food.
Most importantly immediatly after her return she will prepare and cast the spell that will revive the man she killed.
She meticulously prepare the body with the oil and lay it on the ground. Then she put her hand on his chest and began chanting after ten long minute of prayer the body began to stir and finally he open his eyes.

Elkal responds to the religion discussion first. "You speak rightly, fellow Dreamers. Let's erect a shrine to the spirits, where anyone is free to worship as the please, when they please--and free to not worship, if they choose."

In regards to the work discussion, he says, "Uidon, I agree that everyone should train. Instead of having Train as a job like Gather, Craft, and Farm, let's instead have three groups of around 13-14 workers who Gather, Craft, and Farm. One of their work days will be spent training, and that day will rotate every week. They should be trained by our professional soldiers, and of course any of us who wish to do so. I think since they are militia they should serve as ranged support, and be trained in two-person teams to use crossbows. Rotating, one will reload and the other will fire, effectively launching 20 (if all 40 are trained as militia and deployed in battle) bolts per round."

On that note, he turns to crafting. "I will have my unseen crafters begin construction on heavy crossbows for that purpose. The 8 of them will produce together 6 heavy crossbows in a week; 24 in a month. In less than 2 months we'll have the entire militia outfitted and we can repurpose my Unseen Crafters.

Korin, I agree that we should also make traps. Unfortunately, I don't know how.

What else should we craft? I don't recall who, but doesn't someone else know how to make the Unseen Crafters? Perhaps that person's crafters could focus on masterwork weapons and armor for our professional soldiers? That's just one idea.

When xilef casts the spell, eveyopne is really astonished. many belived it would not be possible.

when the body comes back to life, the ex-deceased is very confused (and somewhat angry given his "new acenstry"), but having his daughter just close, sobbing at his chest prevents him from doing anything harsh or strange.

All the followers celebrate the return of the Deceased (you're quite sure that such nickname will catch) vividly, rising him to the air and thanking Xilef. Deceased is terribly confused at first, but then the entire situation is explained and he find himself thanking Xilef for all that "We may have started with the wrong foot Werewolf, but now my daughter is safe and I might get to die as a free man twice. I will be happy to slauther as many slavers as we can find" (Obviously, that nameless guy just got himself a few barbarian levels)
    ----------------------------
On regards to crafting things, Seanon desagrees with Elkal "Having the non-fighitng militia armed is good, but first we must get equipment to our armed militia! We don't have enoght swords, shields or even light armor for all the new recruits. Besides, having good quality wepons will allow me and Uidon to enhance them magicly for good"

    ---------------------------

Korin starts the meditation process with the guards, despite some shy protests from some of the new followers. They use a spiked trap pit himself dig before going to the slave camp as secluded location to meditate. With a thick cover above their heads, there is nearly no sound and absolutelty no light coming from the surface. These man are quite undisciplined and at the start of the first day of meditation they already start to talk nonsense or complain about the situation (How will korin handle this?). At this point these man are obviously more intrested in surviving than truly meditate about their actions of the past to a new future or freedom and compassion

Korin doesn't respond to the complaints, simply taking a seat and lighting a small candle before him. He stares out at the slavers as he speaks

"If you have complaints, I will listen. Better to voice your thoughts now than dwell on them, it will only make meditating harder."

Korin then turns his gaze to the candle, which he places in the center of the pit.

"Please don't try to rush things. I'll be with you for as long as it takes."

The planning session moves forward, "Crossbows? I hadn't considered. Do we have the metal?" Uidon waves one of the skirmishers over and quickly sends him off to look in the Tower stores. "Yes. Ranged support. This will give them more than a skill. Training is key. They must know they are not slaves. Slaves can't fight." He slows for a moment, "They don't learn to defend their brothers." A sense of wellbeing and peace settles on Uidon as he looks around the table. These people are the reason slavery can't contiue. "I can focus on us."

Uidon rolls out for the other Dreamers. "See, the world. This is a key. Talk with the ex-slaves. Learn any details we can. Even a small village or a river can turn a battle. "

    ----------------------------------------------

Later as Xilef places the body on the ground, Uidon doesn't know what to expect. Dead was dead. Even the ritual was not intense. Xilef simply snatched the soul or something and shoved it back into the, which distorted with the effort, muscles bulging. It was surely a spectacle of power. How could these new Brothers and Sisters not feel the world changing?

The ex-Slavers could be a problem, but Korin could bring them to the battle, his spirits are very strong. Seeing them in the battle would be important. Uidon continues to work with Elkal around the planning, waving his small wright and Crafers to work for the moment. It was going to be a long few weeks.

That'll be 8 castings of Unseen Crafter the next day. I'll start them all as Weapon crafters (+9 bonus). Each day Uidon will cast 1 new Unseen Crafter to keep them all current. We'll figure out what to have them work on shortly.

Not sure what Uidon will start with just yet.

I am currently looking to join one more game. Mage, D&D 3.5, Patherfinder and D&D 4th are all acceptable.

Korin keeps his meditation whit the guards. For the first few hours they are not really serious about it, but somehow Korin manages to impress them with his own discipline. The thee days of meditation pass slowly and are indeed draning to mind and body. When they complain about something, Korin reasures them everyting will turn out fine and leads by example.

The hunger is draning, tiresome, painfull, but manageble. the lack of water gives the guards a lot to think about, however. Not only that, but that insense seems to be getting on them...

    Starvation And Thirst

Characters might find themselves without food or water and with no means to obtain them. In normal climates, Medium characters need at least a gallon of fluids and about a pound of decent food per day to avoid starvation. (Small characters need half as much.) In very hot climates, characters need two or three times as much water to avoid dehydration.

A character can go without water for 1 day plus a number of hours equal to his Constitution score. After this time, the character must make a Constitution check each hour (DC 10, +1 for each previous check) or take 1d6 points of nonlethal damage.

A character can go without food for 3 days, in growing discomfort. After this time, the character must make a Constitution check each day (DC 10, +1 for each previous check) or take 1d6 points of nonlethal damage.

Characters who have taken nonlethal damage from lack of food or water are fatigued. Nonlethal damage from thirst or starvation cannot be recovered until the character gets food or water, as needed—not even magic that restores hit points heals this damage.

all 3 guards have 14 constitution... so they would need 34 constition checks of growing DCs. I'll cut that to half (17 constitution checks) and it will still be difficult for them and korin

Additionally, the incense korin took is a mild halucinogenic. Over the 3 day time, It will require 10 fortitude saves DC 12 or deal 1d3 wis damage.

Finally, they must make a will save DC 6 to show that the meditation was sucessfull

Korin must make the same saves and checks.

When Xilef shows her plant-growing powers to the farmers, they are as impressed as when she bought Deceased back. They say "My girl, you're quite something! I was afraid we needed to head to town to get seeds, but using your MAGIC we can use wild berries and fruits at crop scale!"

Over the course of 3 weeks, Xilef aids the farmers in gathering and testing different fruits, berries, nuts and seeds as a stable-growing food for all. By the end of this time, they have already chosen good quality food to be used on a "farm". They rise those forage plants between the trees, so that their farm is integrated with the forest - and naturally hidden from your enemies, that will only see a lot of vegetation, not a farm. Covering a large area, your "farm" manages to produce food for 100 people per day - exactly what you needed. None of this could be possible without Xilef's magic.

The workshop on the side of the tower quickly becomes a dangerous place to stand around. From crude wooden benches and tables rasps, bindings and clamps fly through the air in small whirlwinds of construction. The bellows pump and steam rises from the quenching barrels. The first week the weakened slaves can barely participate. It is all too much for them.

The full meals and exercise, the freedom from the whip, and the commanding presene of Uidon quickly help move them to becoming efficient workers. "Nails. Wooden staves. Crushed rock." Uidon instructs, drawing pictures of days production schedule for the workshop brothers. "If you know woodworking, step forward. Boards, how do we make them?" The Workshop is rarely silent.

Uidon is almost always trailed by his small ugly homoculus with it's oversized hammer and goofy face. It pounds nails and holds tables steady for stunned ex slaves and carts around buckets of metals on it's head up and down the stairs. Slowly, the armory starts to fill up.

Unseen spirits move from place to place throughout the workshop, working meticulously and without tiring as they craft a variety of weapons and armors. At first, Elkal is also seen there almost daily, working on a project he does not discuss. He is friendly and jovial to the other craftsman, sympathetically showing them a step in more detail or a way to make their work easier when he has moments to spare. He usually arrives during lunch and eats with the crafters before they resume the afternoons labor. He has always been good at making friends (18 Cha) and he does so with these men easily, mostly by listening well. But when he has finished his project he does not begin another, and though his spirits' wake can be seen at all times, he is only seen for the occasional lunch.

Elkal spends most of his mornings training with the professional soldiers, working with the archers. Mentally, he ranks them from best to worst. He also helps to train the militia in crossbow use, mostly drilling the necessary movement with wood dummies so they are like muscle memory. They will get crossbows, but not yet. In this way he meets every newcomer, though he is much less friendly with the men and women he trains--and the crafters, when he is training them. He also spends time watching the half-orc train, and gets to know him as well.

During this time he also spends time with the gatherers, who are surprised to see the more pleasant side of their drillmaster as he points out peculiar flora and fauna, of which he would like live specimins to be brought to him, insects and mushrooms and other curiosities. He rewards each one with a silver coin. He tends to them all in the tower; many are contained either in glass jars (with airholes) or crates if they are large enough (again with airholes). He has an indoor garden where he grows transplanted plants and which he waters with water from the fountain each morning.

Of course spending time with the gatherers also brings him into contact with the farmers, and he offers them advice on such matters as where to plant which crops to maximize effectiveness (Survival +14). But most days he only makes the initial walk out to the wilderness with the gatherers, or sees them later in the day on his way out to search the forest for animals, whatever predator is at the top of the food chain here and might be persuaded to try and exploit him as an easy food source (Survival +14, Know: Nature +4).

He spends a day or two searching the tower from top to bottom, every nook and cranny and inch that he can find (Taking 20 on every room, every wall, every everything). He also investigates the water source to see if it is natural or magical.

He spends one day each week in prayer to the spirits, and burns incense at the altar there every evening. The altar is of simple wood construction, but it is carved with natural images (scenes of mountains and water as well as tribal symbols and totem animals). In the center is a stone bowl and there is a wood cup containing sticks of incense. If any of the followers wish to join him, he is willing to lead them in a simple Sylvan prayer which translates "<Listen, o nation, the spirits are my lord, the lord is one>". If questioned about its meaning, he explains the first part obviously--that the speaker is bowing to the power of the great spirits--and the second part by saying "All the spirits are connected just as all nature is connected, all the universe is as a winter blanket of which we are just the thread. No, less than the thread, more as a speck of dust."

He eats his dinners with the masses, sharing in their spirit and experiences. He asks them questions about their homes and their childhoods, their hopes and aspirations, their passions, and so on in order to get to know each of them.
"Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence"

"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way."

"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves."

Default Re: (IC) Aaaahhh!!!! The Slaves Got Magic!!! (IC)

Nova is always seen in the trainning grounds sparing with the ex-slaves and teaching them what he know about strategy and melee combat. Also he tries to gather a few to his path of freedom, taking an extra time to teach them his dieals and combat prowess.

When not trainning he can be seem all around talking to people and hearing his stories (Gather Info +18, Sense Motive +13) and talking what the slaves think of Korin's test and if they still keep hatred and grudge towards the ones Korin is testing, trying always to speak with them and help them get overt the grudge and try to give them a second chance (Diplomacy +18).

At night he's always alone somewhere singing his songs to no one or reading the books of the tower and trying to find out more about the spirit of the forest.
