Torment raises his staff, from which a seething maelstrom of souls springs, and fires a carefully aimed lance of shadows at Rolando. If it hits, there's a good chance it will simply kill him outright, especially if it gets a solid hit. Meanwhile, several of the spirits start to flock around Ashtrek and Songdancer, which should provide protection form his spell, should it somehow go awry and hit one of them.

War raises her two-handed flail, which is emitting a horrible noise, like a thousand simultaneous battles, and advances on him; if she gets close enough, she'll swing it at his lower back, trying to snap his spine.

Carrion stands, and advances as well, his rapier giving off the stench of hundres or thousands of rotting corpses. If he's able to get into striking range, he'll try to stab Rolando through the heart.

The others also make various preparations, but aren't going to get close enough to affect things just yet.
