Have you noticed how Elan's rapier looks on a bright background? I'd say it really needs a border.

It's hard to notice -- on a glance, you see a drawing error in the walls behind, and only upon a closer look you see that the rapier is there.

Everything else in the comic that's not an effect (smoke, etc) or a texture of an existing surface (like hair), has a black rim. Rich, could you please add one, even if very thin?

It doesn't really bother me, I noticed it just fine.

One thing you have to rmember is that Rich draws these panels out on a much larger scale so they can be printed for the books. In the books it is easier to notice the small details and it's one of the reasons I buy them.

I see that the presence or lack of ambient light makes quite a difference -- so if you're viewing it in a dark room, both the background and the rapier get relatively brighter and so meld together.

I quite fail to see what difference would paper vs screen make (except the inability to read a book in the dark)... it's not about the size of individual pixels, but about low contrast between regions.

I can see it just fine, maybe your computer is set at a different contrast to other people?

It's not possible to add a border to such a small object. The line is only 2 pixels wide. If Rich added a 1 pixel thick border, it would double the size of the object.

Easy solution: Colour it green - it'll also look cooler in the final fight.

I too have to say I don't have any problems seeing it.

My problem lies in how it's drawn. I know it's stick figure art, but I would still like a... I don't know, a pointy end to it. It's just a line. But this is seriously not that big a deal to me. It looks okay.

I'm pretty sure a border would be really distracting or so thin it'd be pointless.

Simply put, computer screens use additive(RGB) color while the book would be using print(CMYK) color. This can have a substantial impact on color.

Either that or they'd just glide through any 3D material as they had a cross section of 0 to interact with that matter.

well, i imagine if you made it in the right way and used it right you would still be able to do some harm, disrupt vital organs, etc... If it existed, it's still physically there, if you stabbed someone in the heart or neck or head it could cause trouble since it would be very much solid.


With that said, it could also just be like dividing by zero and cause a hole to be ripped in the fabric of reality, but technically that would still fulfill it's purpose of ruining someones day...

It's a quantum rapier. It is simultaneously both gray and black.

Yeah maybe we could just put it in a box where it is simultaneously either black or gray in it's box after any given time.
But only chooses one color as a result of the background when it's opened.

That's not even accurate. Just off the top of my head, there is V's belt, Malack's amulet, Durkon's amulet, Xykon's phylactery, and Dorukan's headband. Not to mention the recent sandal straps and victory string. Also, the term you are looking for is outline, not "rim".

Sabres aren't in the core rules though- and the 3.5 PHB Rapier artwork shows a similar hilt, and a fairly wide blade.
