    Maybe he didn't get around to it. Nale is good for planning (the plans themselves are usually pretty bad, but he's generally good about remembering to come up with one); this ambush was a complete surprise and he might not have had a chance to find a divine caster yet. High-level clerics/druids can't be that common, right?

    That is a good point. Not being 100% prepared for everything 100% of the time isn't necessarily a sign of stupidity, it's simply the result of mortal limitations and the nature of reality.
