Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Okay. Well... That's boring.
Poetry should be about things that actually inspire people! War and bloodshed and fear! And other things not so negative! If a poem is about something boring and obvious, then it will likely be boring, and how can you have a discussion about things that are boring?
Seriously... Nine months of poetry about belonging? Are they trying to turn today's youth away from the written word?
When I was in English, we got to read poems about violence, discrimination and other weighty topics. Much more interesting.
Edit: I shall have to produce artwork on this topic.Last edited by Elemental; 2012-10-15 at 02:20 AM.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Whether or not they're trying to, they're certainly succeeding! And no, don't be silly. It's only 4.5 months of poetry about belonging.
The other 4.5 is actually reasonable, depending on how good your teacher is (hint: not a given thing). We study three 'modules': A, B, and C. They differ from school to school, but for us:
A = Morality, creation: Frankenstein + Bladerunner.
B = Revenge, Loyalty, Duty: Hamlet
C = Conflicting Perspectives: The Justice Game (Geoffrey Robertson).Last edited by Elm11; 2012-10-15 at 02:41 AM.

Get me a job, Katana! D:
But coo'. I'll send you my mobile number sometime soon. I'll be staying at my cousin's near Central Station on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and going to Camden... I guess I'll have to get the train from Central mid-late morning, and likely won't be back 'til the evening. The Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

I suggest preparing your spells to avoid the encounters.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
I found out just then that I didn't get the job Apparently they liked me, though, and found it "refreshing" that my love of reading came out in the interview, would sign me on as a casual if I was living in Camden, and will keep me in mind if anything else comes up.
That's twice now, that I haven't gotten a job despite them going out of their way to tell me that they'd like to work with me... So close, and yet so farThe Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Sorry to hear that. :(
You do have something to tide you over until something bigger and better cones along. That's what I'm doing now and some in my class don't even have that first step.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
And that's the end of the HSC. Those... 12 years? went by surprisingly quickly. I should probably feel all 'sense-of-occasion'-ey, but I don't. Frankly, it feels like a slightly tiresome Thursday afternoon. We're going out to dinner at some-posh-restaurant-or-other, but personally I'd just rather our favourite Vietnamese place. To me the official 'end' of my schooling was when I graduated a month ago. Finishing all of my exams, while certainly a relief (and the beginning of a 4 month holiday) just seems like a mistimed afterthought.

Elm, if it makes you feel any better, I felt like that at the end of year 12 as well.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
It was Year 13 for me, but I felt exactly the same way when I finished school.
Uni is worse though I remember finally handing in my Honours thesis, having fully intended to go out and celebrate with friends - instead, I was so exhausted, I went home and fell asleep on the couch.

Amen to that...
And trust me doing a Ph D is not much better.
Hello all,
It's been a while... I have been busy with my first field season which turned out to be an absolute disaster... It has been that bad that I am seriously thinking of ditching the entire thing and start looking for another job...sigh.

I'm sure you'll rise again from the ashes RP like some kinda mythical bird, name escapes me at the moment....
Hope it turns around though!
And finishing school is an odd feeling. I always joke with my housemate about how it's insane that we are "adults".
I reckon my adult certificate must have gotten lost in the mail.
Also, since most of those in this thread come from the same starting point (Australia) what is people's opinion on good holidays? They don't have to be super cheap or anything, but would like to spend less than 10k if that is possible!

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
DEATH!
You should get me a job in the mines :I
What sort of holiday would you like? You could do Bali on no more than a couple thousand, or I like Heron Island on the GBR, or you could visit Central Oz, or you could go meet all those awesome people in the UK and tell them I say hi... Or you could come to the Sydney mini-meet coming up, or stay at my place near Coffs HarbourThe Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Heya Serpie,
I would certainly try, yet sadly my site isn't hiring at the moment as well as they overlooked me for CEO, so other site's bit out of my control. For now anyway.
And I guess I had thought of Europe, but thought I should save that for a big holliday. Maybe aiming for Asia first.
Knew you'd be a good one to talk to with your wealth of travelling experiences!
I certainly will pass on your hellos to the awesome people though, got to go beat up Charity and AE if I head to GBR!
I haven't been to central Oz yet, but have travelled over the east coast a lot. Sydney mini-met is a problem since work won't let me off for the next few months.
Glad to know I'll have a place to crash in NSW though!

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Hello Australian people - I was wondering if you folks might be able to help me with something. For NaNoWriMo I'm working on a book about succubi/incubi throughout history and various cultures. I was wondering if any of you knew whether there was an Aboriginal equivalent of a succubus and how it would fit into their Dream mythos. If you can recommend any books, websites or wiki sources (books would be preferable) I'd really appreciate it.
