Re: LGBTAitp - Part Nineteen
I suspect that's mostly to do with crappy webcam pic. I have a reasonably delicate build and such, but I couldn't just go out and expect to be read as female. I've made an effort to dress up en femme in public once, and I got read. That was before makeup though, I don't know what the result was after makeup.

Re: LGBTAitp - Part Nineteen
@Heliomance: Does it matter to you whether I (or other posters) refer to you as he or she? (It's just something that got on my mind.)
Me too.
Fathers:
SpoilerWhile my father thankfully isn't encouraging me to ogle at women, he does say things that make one go "wut?" During the X-mas holidays, we put up paintings (which my family has had for decades, in previous homes) on the walls in the living room and the dining room (seperate from the kitchen, though we usually use the kitchen to eat in). One of the paintings feature a young adult woman, and my mother asked something about "Where is Vietnamese [woman]?" (refering to the painting) and my dad quickly replied "Wherever she is, she's probably old and ugly!"
This isn't the most misogynist or racist thing my dad has ever said, but it felt like a needle inside me because 1) I rather liked that painting, and as I kid I liked to wonder who she was etc, and 2) I never had realised she was meant to be East Asian, let alone Vietnamese, and realising that created some feedback loop whatever of emotions I had for the painting, the woman depicted in it, and my resentment of my dad's worldview which his dad would surely have resented.
Taking account of his weird sense of humour, there are times I wonder if he is the basis for the Trolldad comic strips.
PS. I hope my attempt at pulp fiction isn't boring you guys and gals, because I'd love to get input on the supporting cast, before I publish it and the origin story over at deviantART.Viking/Paladin by Astrella

Hair:
Spoiler
Yup, you got me there. Low-ish cut shirts and opaque tights under knee length skirts is as revealing as it gets. Chubby and pale, here!
I, uh, have no idea about female thigh hair. My investigations, being restricted to a single subject, have come up with no positive data. I'll go type it into Google Images and see what happens.
I liked it!
She likes it if you mix it up when you're referring to him, if my memory hasn't failed me.

Re: LGBTAitp - Part Nineteen
Aye, as KenderWizard said, I'm quite fond of the idea of mix-and-match pronouns. This is the only place I've tried it out thus far - I'm not sure how far I'm going to take this androgyny thing. I have a sneaking suspicion I might be somewhat genderfluid, and annoyingly I may have slid into a phase of being more comfortable with being male right as I get up the courage to take the plunge into androgyny ¬_¬
Oh well. I'm going to do it anyway, and see how well it works. What is life, but a journey of self-exploration? If I do end up going fully androgynous long term, then I'll try to get mix-and-match pronouns going in real life, I think!Quotebox

Re: LGBTAitp - Part Nineteen
Thanks, Heliomance and KenderWizard, I hope I remember it this time!
Now, there's a secret I must tell you... For less than a decade ago, I ventured into the darker sides of the 'net for discussions about comic books, films, books... and pornography.
What I found was a place in which Chaos reigned supreme. I decided I needed to become a super-hero in order to bring the law to the lawless. I became...
... The Unbreakable Captain Sweden!
However, my attempts were in vain. Most of the more law-abiding (or neutral, mostly) citizens have over the years moved away to other domains. I do still make a few hit-and-run operations, for old times sake.
Tonight (and previosuly this week) I did such operations. I schooled an ignorant heterosexual cismale about what it means to be a transwoman.
I'm not going to link directly to that thread - there are minors here, after all - and I couldn't have it on my conscience to introduce people so pure in heart to such a place.
So I'll copy-and-paste the relevant posts:
SpoilerThread title: Victoria's secret
Page 1:
McGurk - 希望の戦士: Victoria is a man. [LOL-smiley]
Page 2:
Captain Sweden - Unbreakable: The implied transphobia of this thread disgust me.
Just because some women were unfortunate to be born with male genitals, doesn't give us (cismales) the right to ridicule them.Wonder Boy - keeping a firm grip on the Penis of Truth: I always thought "she-males" was a voluntary condition.
Gross, but voluntary.Wonder Boy: [quote of my post]
I think it was intended to be fun and playfully surprising , not as "transphobic".
Any more than backlashes of "[female pundit] is a man" are transphobic. It just implies that [female pundit] is tough like a man. And I think McGurk's remark was far more light and humorous in intent than the remarks directed at "[female pundit].
I actually had to look up the term "cismales" [links to Wikipedia article], and although some of the details are still not clear to me, it roughly translates to trans-gender
I was likewise trying to be fun.
I jokingly said "gross" because it isn't something that aligns with my tastes. The same way that I think putting ketchup on a hot dog is gross.
There was a guy named Magicjay who used to post here who became a fun contributer here for a while, and was an articulate representative of the transgender lifestyle. As I recall he lived in the San Francisco area, and had an operation to become a woman around the time he stopped posting here.Wonder Boy: [quotes himself]
Perhaps in retrospect comparison to hot dogs was ill-advised in discussing sexual issues.Captain Sweden: [quotes Wonder Boy "first" post (read above)]
"She-males" is generally seen as derogatory term. You may hear or see some transwomen use [it], but consider that some Afro-Americans use the word "******" or "*****h". Some think it's the right way to "take back" derogatory terms, some don't. (Just the same, it's equally offensive to use "he-shes" for transmen.)
The correct term is pre-op (pre operation) transwoman, or Male-to-Female (MtF). (Transmen are often referred to as Female-to-Male.) Some transwomen can't afford or for whatever reason does not choose to do either HRT (hormone replacement therapy) or SRS (sex reassignment surgery). To get SRS, you have to first to do HRT. HRT is a process that takes years. This is what makes transwomen develop breasts, biologically similar to how cisgender (I'll explain that term in the next post) girls develop breasts during puberty. They also (usually) create mood swings and decreased (!) libido, and they always get sterile as a side effect. Usually, MtF:s do also voice training so they'll sound more like ciswomen.
So for a several years, a MtF could have what you call a "condition", not because of choice, but because she needs to wait for the hormones to do their job first.
Some MtF do choose to not get SRS, due to preferring to keep their male genitals. Perhaps because *they* don't mind them and/or because they feel SRS is emasculating. It should be noted that SRS for MtF doesn't mean that the penis is just cut off; it's "split" into three parts and then molded into a vagina, labia, ****oris etc. (The testicles, however, are discarded.)
You may feel grossed out by pre-op MtF. Some don't. (I, and for what it's worth, our mutual comrade Pariah, are not. I'll admit I used to be.) However, no one is forcing you to have relationships or sex with either MtF or FtM, nor should you be forced. Just like you shouldn't be forced to have sex or relationships with overweight women if you find chubby, fat and/or obese women unattractive. Or women with disabilities. Or with scars or burn marks.Captain Sweden: [quoting WB]
I'm sorry Dave, but those who were against [female pundit] and used that bad rhetoric were indeed claiming she was MtF, with the remarks of her supposed Adam's apple and looks in general.
But I should have refereed only to the original poster rather than the whole thread, since I know see how other (innocent) posters could mistake my post as directed to them all.
[quoting WB]
I'm sorry Dave, but that interpretation is incorrect.
Cisgender is actually very simple. Easiest way to put it, is that it's the opposite of transgender.
A cisgender person, like you (I assume as much) and me, are male spirits/souls/minds in male bodies. We are, basically, content with being males in male bodies.
A transgender person is someone who's spirit/soul/mind does not correspond with his or her body. Often described as being "born in the wrong body". A MtF is a women "trapped" in a male body, a FtM is a man "trapped" in a woman's body.
[quotes WB]
I don't really think the analogy is apt, but whatever flows your boat, I guess.
[quotes WB]
First of all, being MtF or FtM it's not a lifestyle choice more than it is for me to wear spectacles, due to me being myopic. I don't consider myself to have a "myopic" life-style. (There are those who wear glasses without needing them; they wear spectacles with window glasses instead of lenses. But I digress.) However, transgender is a broad term that envelope being MtF/FtM as well as transvestites, Drag Queens, Drag Kings and other cross-dressers. If you think a MtF is having a "transgender life-style" because she wears a skirt before HRT and SRS, I suppose you have a point. But it's a very minor point.
Second, I doubt Magicjay (I remember very little of her, I must add) considered herself "male" right until she got SRS. As I said before, a MtF isn't a male who chooses to be a woman, a MtF is a woman who wants to get a female body which she is comfortable with. Which I pointed out earlier, is far from being without cost, but much better than living in the wrong type of body.Last edited by H Birchgrove; 2012-01-14 at 07:18 AM. Re: LGBTAitp - Part Nineteen
I have an interesting article to share with everyone. I read about it in a bird magazine at my work, but here's the full article in BBC Nature: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/14479670
Basically, the article's about a scientific study into zebra finch pair bonding. The study had these finches raised in same-sex groupings, and the finches formed bonds with other finches of the same sex. The found that these finches in these pairings still showed the exact same behaviors they do with opposite sex bonding.
Furthermore, they later introduced the opposite sex into these groups with the same-sex grouped finches. The majority of the finches stayed in their bonds and completely ignored the other finches.
I just thought it was an interesting study to show everyone. This kind of behavior has seen in higher cognitive thinking parrots (I believe), but to see it in a "lower" intelligence animal is kinda neat.
Just thought I'd share. Thanks Uncle Festy for the wonderful Ashling Avatar

Re: LGBTAitp - Part Nineteen
Done.
Did I do my good deed for the day, or did I just waste one-two hours of my life? (Regardless of what reaction Wonder Boy will have.)
Edit:
SpoilerSo, he thinks "transmen" sounds like a SF or super-hero comic book title. Which is fine and all, but I expected more of the response...Last edited by H Birchgrove; 2012-01-14 at 08:15 AM.
