Re: Simple Q&A D&D 3.5 (by RAW) XX
Q 424
I'm wondering about the compatibility of a full armor and certain magical items.
I guess you can change some of the components of your armor for some magical ones, like your helm, your gauntlets or your boots. Does it affect your AC bonus?
Wearing a ring under your gauntlets?
What about bracers or headbands?
Is it ruled out somewhere in the core books?Last edited by godryk; 2012-03-20 at 09:00 AM.
"78% of DM's started their first campaign in a tavern. If you're one of the 22% that didn't, copy and paste this into your signature."
It started with a chase, with the characters fleeing from some small town militia.

Q425
How do you stack concealment? If you have an opponent who is adjcent to you in fog cloud (20% concealment ) and invisible (50%), is this just 70% concealment?
Q425b
True Seeing says:
True seeing, however, does not penetrate solid objects. It in no way confers X-ray vision or its equivalent. It does not negate concealment, including that caused by fog and the like.Last edited by Ditto; 2012-03-20 at 10:48 AM.

You could help others gain a flanking bonus, since that's dependent on the opponent being threatened on opposite sides and you threaten with your bow. You could not, however, gaining a flanking bonus yourself this way; the flanking bonus only applies to melee attacks.

You can switch out such "accessory" items without impacting your AC. While full plate is described as including "gauntlets, heavy leather boots, a visored helmet"; none of them have a listed AC bonus, so you can choose not to use them without reducing your AC.
A425
Here's the SRD's section on concealment.
Multiple concealment conditions do not stack. You would only use the largest miss chance (in your example, the 50%).
A425b
In this case, true seeing negates the invisibility (and the corresponding total concealment and its 50% miss chance), but not the fog cloud. The 20% miss chance from the fog cloud's concealment would be the final miss chance from concealment.FeytouchedBanana eldritch disciple avatar by...me!

Q426 Can you "stack" alternative class features? Specifically would it be legal for a bard to get an animal companion from the unearthed arcana alternative class feature (page 58) and then take urban companion (from here)?

By RAW, no. The urban companion class feature requires Druid level 1st or Ranger level 4th; neither of which the bard meets. That said, I believe you would be better served asking this question to the DM of the game.FeytouchedBanana eldritch disciple avatar by...me!

The section you bolded is relevant for spells and effects that have a modifier of some sort based on the caster's familiarity with something. Two such things in core are the will save modifier for Scrying and the accuracy of Teleport. For example, someone who the familiar knows well would get a -5 penalty against the wizard's Scrying even if the wizard somehow knows nothing about the subject.Like 4X (aka Civilization-like) gaming? Q428
What is the volume of a PHB/SRD Barrel? They're listed as 30 pounds empty, but I can find nothing on their size or carrying capacity.
Q428B
Are there other options for transporting large quantities of water other than buying dozens of waterskins or a pile of jugs that add 9 lbs per gallon?
Q429
Are there tables for buying bulk foods other than the ambiguous and fairly expensive "trail rations"? If my character wanted to buy a sack of rice, where should I look for information?Last edited by Voyager_I; 2012-03-20 at 07:49 PM.

Q 430
The DMG p. 135 lists Table 5-1, Character Wealth by Level. Does this refer to the Market Price of the character's combined assets, the sell price (i.e. 1/2 market price), or something else?
Also, the directly related sub-questions:
Q 430a
How about the Treasure Values Per Encounter table on p.51?
Q430 b
What about the Wealth Comparisons table on p. 54? Do the Treasure per Character and Expected Wealth Gain refer to the Market or Sell price?

Prices listed are always assumed to be market values, which is also how much the PCs would pay for the item in question.
This means PCs start with equipment worth the stated amount, reached simply by adding up the given prices.Last edited by Voyager_I; 2012-03-20 at 10:26 PM.

From WikiAnswers on winemaking barrels: "A new 59 gallon oak barrel weighs about 120 lbs when empty." That agrees with Wikipedia on barrel volume: 59.4 gallons.
Assuming the barrel thickness remains the same, scaling the 120 lb. barrel down yields a 30 lb. barrel with about 14.85 gallons capacity.

Q 432
I vaguely remember someone mentioning that WBL only applied to certain classifications of items, i.e. those that are useful in combat and such. So what types of items are and/or are not included in WBL?
I believe they may have been referring to real property such as a stronghold or somesuch, but I am curious as to whether something like a Bag of Holding or Portable Hole counts against WBL.

Neither. You get two spells, total. These can be of any level you can cast, but are typically the highest level you can cast because that is almost always the most powerful choice possible.Like 4X (aka Civilization-like) gaming? Know programming? Interested in game development? Take a look.

A 431 Yes.
These are explicitly declared as human, and meet Able Learner's "Prerequisite: Human or doppelganger." and Chameleon's "Race: Human or Doppelganger." requirements.Subraces And Paragon Classes
As a general rule, a member of a subrace can take levels in the standard race's paragon class unless a specific paragon class exists for the subrace.

Race and subtype are different classifications. Any race requirement must be met independent of subtype.

If I understand what you're referencing...that only applies to NPCs, whose listed "NPC gear by level" in the DMG is only for the value of the equipment they carry with them in an encounter. There is no actual WBL listed for them.
PC WBL encompasses all of a PC's possessions.FeytouchedBanana eldritch disciple avatar by...me!

Q437
Does a Javelin of Lightning take a standard action (per standard single use item that replicates a spell with standard action casting time), or is it part of an attack (allowing a character with quick draw to throw as many as he gets attacks in a turn)?

A 436 Ask your DM.
All custom item creation is subject to DM judgment. You may make, possess, or sell such an item only if your individual DM agrees, on a case-by-case basis. Note that an item created under one DM may be ruled as not possible to exist in another DM's game.
A 437
A Javelin of Lightning is a weapon, and follows the weapon rules. It takes an attack to throw one.

In gaseous form, your fly speed is 10ft/Perfect.A gaseous creature can’t run, but it can fly at a speed of 10 feet (maneuverability perfect).
What if you were also under the effects of Heart of Air (+10 ft Fly speed)?

If the creature were subject to Fly, Gaseous Form would then give the creature another fly speed which would operate in parallel and be largely irrelevant unless a need for perfect maneuverability arose. (If the creature were subject to Gaseous Form first, Fly could not then be imposed because it requires touching, and you can't touch an insubstantial form.)
If the creature is capable of casting Heart of Air (Complete Mage, page 106) after gaining a fly speed, the spell would operate as described: +10' to any existing fly speed.Originally Posted by Gaseous Form- Fly + Gaseous Form:

Re: Simple Q&A D&D 3.5 (by RAW) XX
Q439
In the description of the feat "apprentice" from the DMG 2 it says spontaneous casters who study with another caster of the same type recieve the benefit of an extra first level spell known, and that at every level, they can swap a spell they know for another spell. It doesn't say anything about another spell on their spell list, and it doesn't mention spontaneous spellcasters with pre-picked lists. So two questions:
A: Can a sorcerer use this benefit to learn cure light wounds? To learn lesser confussion? To learn an assassin only level 1 spell?
B: If a class like a beguiller takes this feat, what spells do they learn? Any arcane? Any spell already on their list? Or the feat is meaningless?
I think I have a general gist of the answers, so I'm really looking for citations...
Thanks!Last edited by Roguenewb; 2012-03-21 at 05:44 PM.

Re: Simple Q&A D&D 3.5 (by RAW) XX
A 439 A: No.
The tutelage of a spellcasting mentor grants additional benefits only if the apprentice shares the same class as his mentor. ... If the apprentice and his mentor are arcane spellcasters, he gains one additional spell known at 1st level. Wizards gain this spell in their spellbooks, and spontaneous casters such as sorcerers or bards gain an additional 1st-level spell beyond their normal number of spells known.
A 439 B:Spells: A beguiler casts arcane spells, which are drawn from the beguiler spell list on page 11. When you gain access to a new level of spells, you automatically know all the spells for that level on the beguiler’s spell list.

If you have a double weapon, let's use a Spiked Chain for example, and you give it a bonus, let's say Keen, does it only apply to one side? So if you rolled a 19 on both attack rolls for each side, would they both be crits or just one?Last edited by maxrz; 2012-03-21 at 09:25 PM.

Yes, enhancements like keen apply to only one side of a double weapon. All double weapons are treated as two connected weapons after the initial crafting (where the entire weapon must be made masterwork). All magical enhancements are applied to each side independently. If you enhance one side of the weapon with keen, only that side will have an increased critical threat range.

Q440 Part B
Being as you answered so quickly (thank you), I have a secondary question. If you bought Keen for both sides of the Chain, would the bonuses stack, so it becomes a +2 weapon, or do they activate individually, so it'd be a +1/+1 Spiked Chain? To take this further, could you have potentially have a +2/+1 Spiked Chain?

Re: Simple Q&A D&D 3.5 (by RAW) XX
A 440 B
Firstly, a spiked chain is not a double weapon, so no double weapon parameters ever apply to a spiked chain. I had thought you meant a dire flail instead in my earlier answer, but neglected to mention that. Since you repeated the spiked chain reference in this secondary question, I see I should have addressed that directly. I apologize for the earlier, incomplete, answer.
For actual double weapons such as a dire flail, keen provides no bonus to hit or damage, so enhancing each side of a double weapon with keen would result in a +1 keen/+1 keen weapon (as you would first need to buy the minimum +1 numerical enhancement for each side before you were allowed any non-numerical enhancements).
