Ate, people cross their own purposes all the time. I'm a huge example of that. So I'm generally more forgiving. Still, my complaint is not that Fluttershy is out of character, but that her character is not what I would like it to be. People hat nice, are always manipulative, and generally passive aggressive and liars as well. it took until a month or two after season 1 ended for me to be able to give Fluttershy a chance, as I couldn't accept that she was genuinely nice. Now that I've accepted that, and begun to understand exactly how wonderful her characterization is, it's changed and I'm wrong.

Once bitten, twice fluttershy, y'know? Except instead of shy I'm antagonistic.

Forgot about this statement, remedying that now. I don't think you were wrong at all. Fluttershy really is that nice, by choice. It's true that she has a solid core of force of will within her. That's mostly been turned to good for protecting others, but has now caused her to go a little overboard at the gala and with her assertiveness. Those little lapses, however, don't change the fact that Fluttershy is nice and sincerely wants to be nice. If anything, they're the exceptions that prove the rule.

It's worth the wait. While Fallout:Equestria might be the token epic fic around here, this one is the one that is open to any fan of ponies. Hence, it fits better as "the best fic ever" more than FE, because everyone can enjoy it.

Also, the The Old Stories and Heart of Gold, Feathers of Steel are all up there too. Past Sins is iffy for me, because I never liked the idea of a "good" nightmare anyway. For perhapes easly seen reasons.

We've all seen how well Applebloom's forays into alchemy went. I think it's more likely for her special talent to be poison-making than potion-making. Granted, "Show Stoppers" is probably supposed to be the canon reveal of what everyone's talents are (carpentry, in the case of Applebloom), but that's the boring answer.

At the end of the Cutie Pox one of them suggests that Applebloom's special talent is potion making and that they should go see Zecora immediately. Supposedly they do, yet she still has no cutie mark so I'd agree that's not it.

As for Zecora, bear in mind that all her "potions" are made from natural plants and the like, plus she can recognize dangerous plants such as Poison Joke on sight. I'd guess that her talent is herbalism. It's tough to tell, though, given that her "cutie mark" is just an abstract symbol. It's also possible that zebras don't have "special talents" in the same way ponies do. It's pretty tough to speculate with only one zebra character on the show...

Re: Earth Pony magic:
Bear in mind, a lot of the flora of Equestria are seriously outre. The zap apples are the best examples. Perhaps Earth Ponies are just good at sensing the natural magic of such things, making them uniquely well-suited to working out the bizarre rituals needed to get the most out of them. Maybe even "mundane" plants have a certain degree of magic in them. That could explain how apple-bucking works, and it could also explain why Twilight doesn't just cast her Mega-Harvest spell every harvest season (just like how zap apples make better jam when you yell at the jars, maybe regular apples are higher quality when they've been properly bucked).

It also works out fine for all of you who like to think of earth ponies as the underdogs, since they really only have the advantage when it comes to harvesting food (and maybe a few other naturey things). An earth pony whose talent is pretty much anything else has to work extra hard to make up.

I was going to suggest something like what you just said. Pinkie'd me you did.

I'm with Thanqol, I prefer my earth ponies without magic. I like to think it's the trees and plants that are magic, and the earth ponies just have a real knack for dealing with such things. Or... the trees and plants prefer the care of earth ponies over other ponies, or the earth ponies just have that natural kind of patience and care that the plants like and/or need, a kind of patience and care that other ponies tend to lack.

Same with Zebras. Zecora doesn't have magic herself, she's just really knowledgable about magical herbs and such.

Now, as for earth pony magic, I think we're getting caught up here on what the definition of magic really is. Earth ponies have the skill and know-how to grow all the crops and they're as a rule stronger than the other types (although Rainbow Dash demonstrates that pegasi can at least approach the strength of an earth pony). But, do their abilities count as magic? They can do some things better than any others, so...maybe?

Where does the idea that earth ponies are stronger than other ponies come from? From what I've seen, Rainbow Dash easily beats Applejack in hoof-wrestling, while AJ totally owns her in bucking stuff, suggesting that AJ is (much) stronger than RD in her hind legs but weaker than RD in her front legs. AJ's strength in her hind legs is easily and naturally explained by many years of bucking trees, a non-inherited trait that someone like Pinkie Pie probably can't claim but anypony could supposedly train given time and dedication.

On the other hoof, there's no such natural explanation for RD's strength in her front legs (her wings are a different matter), which suggests that her strength there is probably within the norm or not too far above it, certainly not comparable to AJ's strength in her hind legs which is probably way above average.

If earth ponies are stronger on average, it probably has more to do with the kinds of jobs they tend to have than any inborn ability. At least that's my take on it.
