Default Order of the Stick and Theme of Revenge

Do you notice the theme of the comic?
    Vegeance and its consequences.
    1. Eugene and his blood oath for his dead master.
    2. Ancient Black Dragon's (ABD) vegeance over her son and result
    3. V's familicide vegeance over his family (See ABD's result) and the unintended results and regret.
    4. Elven Commander's rage over death of his comrades.
    5. Redcloak himself.
    Spoiler
    Show
Started with destruction of his village and even killed his own brother for his goal.

We see that OOTS showed negative side of the vegeance over men and living things.
I wonder who will be the next victim of their own vengeance? Belkar (He made Yuk Yuk into a toiler for shooting his kitty)? Niu (There are some readers who wanted to see the theme of revenge on her or see her exploded)?

The characters who seek revenge, I think, are the ones bound to die. This is their punishment, and a heavy-handed one at that. V's story of revenge is not over yet, and I'm sure that we'll be seeing more about this further on.

Belkar, on the other hand, will probably meet the effects of vengeance sooner rather than later. He has far less than a year to go now, he'll die soon enough and it would fit thematically if his death was caused by his own seeking of vengeance, or someone else seeking vengeance (I should point out that the many y*k-y*ks he's killed all were seeking revenge as well).

Niu would be an amazing way to show what happens if the cycle is broken. It would be interesting, I think, if when we next saw her she had since decided not to waste any more lives in a foolish war with creatures who are not actually ALWAYS evil, and that instead the best way to honor her friend's memories would be to do actual good in the world.

Just because characters in a story take revenge on others and it doesn't work out very well doesn't mean it's a "theme" of the story. It is a thing that happens, but not necessarily more important than anything else.

Maybe she could be shipped with Hinjo from..
    1. their common trait (both of them lost their friends and family). Like here
Maybe she could be a member of noble family who refuse to leave azure city.
My favorite reaction that I made, based on Augustus Caesar on loss of Three Legions.

You forgot a biggie: the Dark One. From wanting to better the lot of Goblinoids, he now seems to be mostly about getting back at the other gods.

With a side-order of equality still sitting there, crying, as it's used an excuse.

Redcloak would probably also count: he's got back at the paladins, for sure. Much good it's doing him: he's stuck on the Plan with Xykon. If one of the lucky outcomes is personal annihilation, you're on to a loser.

I don't think we have enough information to say the Dark One is motivated by revenge. From the what we told in SoD, the Dark One seems to care more for goblin equality than getting back at the other races.

Redcloak is a different story, though. We see his hatred of Paladins outright in both SoD and the main books. His quest is probably motivated just as much by revenge as by his wanting for equality.

Well, except the first one, perhaps. :)

    More vengeance seekers:

Nale seeking revenge for minor slights/defeats and "dad likes you better" on Elan.

Technically, Pompey seeking revenge for the girls not noticing his half-elf bod?

Curiously, Xykon seems rather unmotivated by revenge. In fact he has trouble remembering the Greenhilts.

Influenced by death of a dwarf.
If he hadn't died, the Scribbles could make a good compromise on the defense.

Come to think of it, the Snarl itself might want revenge.

The IFCC technically might be motivated by revenge, depending upon the circumstances of the set up of the planar universe.

I don't know about that, I think the snarl is the gods redheaded step child, is suffering from neglect, and sucks people through therifts to play with them.

Yeah, I guess so. But to me it makes more sense with how Rich portrays his monstrous characters where he ignores the always/usually/often CE/NE/LE and so forth, to have The Snarl be a victim of the narrator's point of view.

Maybe, but most likely not. Reading comic 274, it seems to suggest that the Snarl cares for nothing for destruction and chaos. I don't think the thought of 'revenge' would ever enter its mind. And if it did want revenge on the Gods and life in general, then what for?

For being imprisoned by the Gods?

And it was described as a "thing of malevolence" in that link, so I don't it is as nice as MitD and just wanting to play.

Do you think that ABD and V can show the duration of vendetta? Her son was killed by V, she responded with an attack on V's family which caused the death of her relatives and herself? I also saw the negative impact of vengeance if we look at V (leaving the fourth gate defenseless, alienated by hir family, innocents unintentionally murdered, and "loaned" her soul to IFCC).

sometime i think you purposely post stuff thats wrong

Roy has no interest in revenge
Xykon has no interest in Revenge
none of the OoTS has interest in revenge, V did not have interest in revenge because the ABD didnt actually DO anything, if the ABD had killed his family then you might have a point but that was just V protecting his family and reveling in the pure arcane power he had

Nale isnt agaisnt eh idea of revenge, but hes nowhere near to being obsessed with it hes jsut interested in getting the gates and the OoTS is in the way

even eugene isnt motivated by revenge, if he didnt have the blood oath he wouldnt care less that Xykon is alive he jsut wants his afterlife if he actually cared that Xykon killed his master that much he would have hunted Xykon for his entire life instead of giving up after a short time

and redcloaks is jsut as motivated to save goblin kind as he is to get revenge for his family

the elven commander and ABD really shouldnt count since they were both minor characters that only apeared in like 10 strips each

revenge isnt close to being a theme for OoTS
