Two versions of de-randomization, scientific and etheric, meet in the forest. The scientific imposes sequentiality; the etheric manipulates luck.

With all the de-randomization, I suspect this is not a random encounter. It probably advances the plot.

I'm actually a little leery of this owl-monkey thing. It clearly wanted to meet them, and it might be benign, but this interlude does end with Annie and Smitty running for the hills.

I say the monkey-owl is going to indirectly cause it, by being prankstery and waking some scary thing up.

That scary thing will turn out to be friendly. Or it'll turn out to be a scary-looking friendly-seeming scary thing (so actually scary). Like if a big horrible monster held out a flower and the flower was razor-edged.

I doubt this little fellow is what they were running from, since Annie and Smitty don't appear to have had their heads twisted around to the back. That's basically all it can do from what I've read.

Can the mythology genesis creates an entire species? It seems that some myth based creatures of the forest does reproduce. The elves for instance.

Of course we don't know whether the human myth about elves spawned them into existence or the myths originated from early encounters with them.

Supposedly, mistreating a chickcharney results in bad luck. I would presume that includes head-butting it.

No, properly treating a chickcharney results in good luck. Mistreating one results in your head getting twisted around backwards.

Mighty Eyebrows Boy for the win!

This is amazing though. Apparently Smitty's power is so comprehensive it causes him to acquire things that he'll need in the future, even when he doesn't know it. Makes you wonder how coincidental it was that he and Parley wound up being both considered for Court Medium, and thus brought into frequent contact...

Annie got a point. Given as Smitty's powers is arranging random events so they work out in his favor, which is essentially what luck is, having a bonus luck infusion from chickcharney could be highly dangerous.

The real question is, would the chickcharney still have lost it's marble if Smitty wasn't coming to the forest? He said he's had it for a week, what do you suppose the chance is that it's been missing for a week? It was drawn to Smitty so he could give it back which he only needs to do because it was his power that took the marble in the first place.

Smitty, solver of everything! I wonder when his power will begin to have drawbacks. We know Annie would have just looked annoyed and gone right off to see her friends.
