"Ehh, what is 'ambush'?" Heinrich asked, though he had a feeling it wasn't good. The carriage had stopped, so he opened the door and hopped out, looking up the road and seeing a half dozen goblins blocking their path. Glancing behind them, he saw more. He quickly pulled out his sword and buckler, looking to fend off the back group of greenskins while the knight did something about the forward group.

Valerie wasn't able to see much and also seemed a little hesitant of what she SHOULD do. After a few seconds of thought, she decided to wait for an opening and for the absense of the others inside the carriage, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention to her magical abilities.

Simon grunted. He was hoping they could avoid any fighting, but since that was precisely what he had been hired for, he could hardly hide and expect to get paid.

"I'll be right back," he told Valerie, grabbing his sack of healing herbs in one hand and his quarterstaff in the other. "No worries, I'm not taking useless risks. It's not like I'm any good at fighting."

Laurent half-stumbled off the driver’s bench, his cheerfulness replaced with apprehension. Fumbling for his sword, he crept around the side of the coach, trying to get out of the archers’ sight. Matias was less concerned with finding cover; in one fluid motion he had raised his crossbow to eye level, taking sight of the goblin at the left end of the log. He pulled the trigger after half a second’s pause. The bolt darted forwards, and would have gone right between the greenskin’s eyes if not for the small hump on the wood that snagged it. The goblin’s momentary expression of fear became a sneer, as it and its companion loosed another two arrows – neither found their mark, though, juddering into the front of the coach above his shoulders.

Heinrich, Siegfried and Simon came tumbling out of the carriage doors, and the pit fighter’s assertive positioning between the rear group of goblins and the other two soon seemed less courageous another round of shots came from behind. Simon felt a suddon pinch of pain - looking down at his left arm, he noticed that a short black shaft had slid through his skin and emerged only an inch or two away. Just like a needle and thread, a thought came to his head unbidden.

The goblin chief waved his crooked blades again to take Abel’s charge, and his cohort charged, dashing haphazardly towards the coach and its passengers. Laurent was set upon left and right, thin spears jabbing at him from both sides – instinct rather than training saw him twist out of the way of one and smack the other aside with the flat of his blade. Siegfried successfully sidestepped out of the path of another crooked spearhead – Heinrich was not so lucky, one bumpy point slipping easily past his shield and sliding across his chest – but the pit fighter had taken far worse injuries, and it felt like little more than a scratch.

As Dawn bore down on the chief, one exceptionally brave or stupid runt tried to stab upwards at Abel, but the knight rode clear past the offending weapon. The chieftain had more patient – not until the warhorse was almost on top of him did he jab forward at its rider. Abel shifted his weight as the attack came, just as he’d predicted – the blade harmlessly whistled past his ear. Now, it was his turn ...

Matias cursed himself as his bolt slammed into the trunk before the hideous little green creature he'd fired at. He'd never really fought goblins before, but Matias Leitmann would be found dead on his face before he'd let his nerves take the better of him.

With a quick, practiced motion, Matias slid another bolt onto the rail of his crossbow, drawing back the loading handle as he brought the weapon up to bear. He paused, taking careful aim at the goblin archers assaulting the group.

Abel lashed out with his sword, his attention entirely focused on the scarred chieftain still grandstanding on the fallen trunk. His first blow was deflected by an awkward branch, but the knight errant wasted no time in stabbing forward again. This time the tip made contact, easily sliding through the leather that covered the creature from head to toe; it went little further than the chieftain’s clothing, though. Hissing and spitting in its own tongue, the goblin’s own blade darted up. Abel tugged Dawn’s reins and the mare reared with a whinny, lifting him clear out of harm’s way – the second goblin’s spear likewise went wide.

Siegfried gritted his teeth and swung his axe in a wide arc – his diminutive foe raised its shield, but the blade bit right through it, bifurcating the thin wood down the middle and coming to a stop embedded in the goblin’s elbow. As it hesitated, Heinrich roared wordlessly, as if still entertaining the crowd around a pit – his slash split the goblin from shoulder to hip, an arc of blood spattering the ground at their feet. The top half slid wetly off as the legs buckled, the lower half of the body suspended from Siegfried’s axe like a grim marionette. The apothecary tore his weapon free, dipping his head hurriedly at the hiss of bowstrings from behind – but he and Simon were spared any hits. Matias quite casually accepted a feathery addition to his cap, feeling nothing but a slight pinprick to the temple as he slowly took aim with his crossbow.

Something that sounded like a dog’s yelp emerged, or seemed to emerge, from the carriage – Simon’s ears popped as he felt an aethyric pressure wave build up. For a second or two he was transfixed as long, translucent tendrils emerged from a Valerie-shaped silhouette and gently teased at the other goblin’s fingers – the spear dropped to the earth with a gentle thud. Vision and sensation alike disappeared as another yell demanded his attention, this time definitely coming from the rear of the carriage. Abel twisted his neck in time to see one greenskin withdraw the bloody tip of a spear from Laurent’s side.

Inside, Marperic had his hands over his mouth, recovering his composure after his most undignified scream. His pupils flicked rapidly between Valerie’s eyes as he stammered. “Y-you ... gods above!

''uh... crap. Look I'm no daemon, alright? i'm an imperial apprentice wizard... so let's take this conversation later, alright? while we're not attacked by greenskins, i mean.'' She uttered with a sigh and a pained expression.

turning back to the fighting, She gripped her staff and started to move through the carriage and towards the goblins just outside.

Abel’s miscalculation left him precariously balanced on the side of Dawn’s saddle, gripping her flanks tight with his legs to avoid sliding off – with a snarl, the chieftain pressed its advantage. His jagged blade came crashing down on the knight errant’s helm, opening a gash across his forehead and leaving him with an ache reverberating around his skull. The more diminutive greenskin stabbed forwards gleefully, spearhead aimed straight through Abel’s forearm – at the last minute, de Celeste swung his shield about and deflected the blow.

Laurent staggered backwards against the coach, his own thin blade held quivering before his chest in a desperate attempt at defence. His assailants readied their weapons, but turned uncertainly to the sound of another wordless roar; Heinrich stepped around a thick trunk at the side of the track, yelling like a barbarian with his sword held above his head and charged towards the pair. Simon quickly stepped up into the pit fighter’s place at the carriage door as Siegfried’s axe connected with the third goblin’s skull – as it lurched, half-dazed, the young wizard tentatively swung his quarterstaff. It swept at the greenskin’s legs, bludgeoning one knee, and the goblin collapsed to the ground, using the haft of its spear as a crutch to stand back up, as Simon became aware of another gentle touch of magic from inside the coach.

    ~

Marperic managed to repeat “Imperial,” but Valerie wasn’t paying attention to whatever me muttered next as she concentrated on her witchsight. The winds were unhelpful, whirling and clouding and steadfastly refusing to let her see through them clearly – she could sense the receding ripples of her own wave from mere seconds ago, and the sizzling, uncontrolled magic pooling around Simon, eager to wind between his mouth and fingers – but beyond that, she could no more have told whether there were other sorcerers about than whether Mannslieb was full as it hid in the bright sky of day.

The pit fighter’s momentum carried him entirely through the air previously occupied by a small greenskin crouching behind its shield – the spear exploded into splinters, and one quivering leg flopped down to the ground as the goblin’s body was batted through the air, flying clear over Laurent and his other attacker. The gratitude in the young peasant’s eyes was clear, but he spent a second too long looking in Heinrich’s direction; his thankful expression dissolved into a grimace as the other goblin jabbed at the small of his back.

Abel’s blows caught the chieftain in his side, opening two slits in its jerkin – dark red blood began to stain its trousers, but the creature showed no sign of faltering. One blade slid through the soft flesh of the knight’s arm jarring against his bone; enheartened, its companion stabbed upwards again. Abel’s shield swung into place; the blow bounced harmlessly off, the greenskin tottering a few steps backwards as Abel drove the spear away.

Siegfried and Simon prodded the trapped goblin hesitantly in Heinrich’s wake, neither seeming eager to expose themselves to its spear – another round of shots hummed past, two arrows connecting with the coach door and sending it swinging. Matias seemed less than human, like some sort of steam-powered artillery piece from Nuln as he tracked one of the archers and loosed a quarrel in return. The shot went wide, but the mercenary seemed not to care as he prepared to nock another.

This time the winds respected her, their previous tumult ebbing into the background like some sort of optical illusion where unfocusing the eyes yielded order from chaos. Simon still fizzed and crackled, loops of aethyric energy sweeping about him as his limbs moved – but that wa all. Further afield, the forest seemed calm; she was certain that if there was a greenskin shaman, it could never be proficient enough in hiding itself from her. Their enemies were entirely mundane.

A loud curse erupted from the previously calm Matias. Not a bolt had landed on target of yet, and still the Goblin onslaught continued. Was it nerves? Inexperience? No, he knew his Marksmanship Principles, and he knew them well.

Firm grip, don't crush the weapon. Steady your breathing, settle the iron sight on the target. Close your eyes and inhale a deep breath. Open your aim eye, and take up the slack in the trigger. On the exhale, squeeze and hold. The release should surprise even the shooter.

Arrows zipping past him, he took a deep breath and prepared another bolt. He raised his crossbow, muttering under his breath.

"Firm grip, don't crush the weapon..." he begain, taking himself through the motions.

He let it fly. His eyes still closed, Matias heard the whip-thwack of a bolt hitting meat. At a glance, he saw he had pegged one of their ambushers in the arm. It was a start.

Seeing the extent of the injuries that the goblin scum had managed to inflict on him, Abel decide to play it safe.
He spurs Dawn into another rear trying to arrange for her hooves to have a formal meeting with the chieftains softer parts, while potecting himself with his shield.

Noticing his horse-borne companion was struggling, Heinrich charged into the largest of the tiny foes, crashing trough the underbrush and bringing his keen sword to bear, cutting heavily into the foul greenskin.
