For some reason, the argument of the guy who got shot in the face doesn't sway them.

Your attention divided by re-activating the ring allows the man in your arms to escape and train his weapon on you.

The other guard scoops up another handful of the powder and throws it where you had been, re-coating you.

I am starting to think that its not one of the inmates that has the dark soul but actually one of the guards...

Shocking!

Ishmael is getting annoyed by this game but he is unsure how to proceed. Already he is thinking whether he should attack right away or trying something else but he also doesnt want to risk making the inmates rebel or anything like that.

He realises one thing... whoever hears of this wont associate it with him given his previous stellar reputation at such operations.

Finally deciding there is no point to delay the inevitable any longer he raises his hands to give the pretense of surrender and then uses Detect Thoughts.

The guard who shot you grabs a pair of manacles off his belt and approaches you.

Ishmael continues looking around the boat trying to determine the level of intelligence on those present. In his experience the most evil people tended to be very smart, hence considering themselves above others and justifying their cruelty, or very stupid, hence their feelings of inadequacy forced them to use violence over reason.

In addition to that and given how he might be covered in some dust but was still invisible he slipped his hand in his pocket putting on the lockpicking ring in the place of the ring of protection.

Other than that he waits until the guard approaches him with the manacles.

Unless you try something before then, he'll manacle your hands and tell you to drop the invisibility.

Ishmael drops the invisibility and smiles, he tries to delay as much as possible in order to focus more on the 'minds' around him.

"Oh well. Come on guardsman you want to tie me down and what then? I even killed a beaver! Is it a crime to want to help the city and just give Detective DiCarto a day off?"

There are seven thinking minds, ranging from 6 int to 22 int. The more surly of the guards is the 22 int person.

How quaint thinks Ishmael and pretends to resist for a few seconds just to delay the process more but eventually allowing the manacles to be placed on him.

"Congratulations Guardsman..." he says with a fake annoyed tone.

"I do have one question though. Apart from myself... who here is actually not exactly who he says he is?" he asks and tries to read the thoughts of the smart guard at precisely this moment.

The man resists your attempts to invade his mind.

"Honestly, we've got three small-time cons and a petty thief here. Doesn't matter to me if they're not who they claim to be. They aren't impersonating a demon-summoner."

3 small time cons and 1 thief + 2 guards = 6 people on board. Is this an oversight? Cause you mentioned 7 minds on board and I doubt the spell shows my own.

no, but apparently the 5th convict on board wasn't convicted of a "deceitful" crime in his eyes.

A guard with 22 intelligence or a guy convicted of something non deceitful related...

Ishmael is suprised but not amazed at the mental fortitude of the guard. He was after all a bright beacon of intellect among the group.

"So what did that guy do then? Killed a nun?" he asks allowing the guard to put on the manacles and using the opportunity to try and read the thoughts of the other guard the moment he asks the question.

"Hardly. Debtor's prison." poor sod had the misfortune to be born poor. thought the other guard sympathetically.

[Monodominant]

"How much do you owe then friend? Once this small kerfuffle is resolved I can help..." he says honestly turning his head around the boat and trying to read the thoughts of the one with the lowest intelligence.

"Just shut up now." the high-int guard says.

Cowed, the man doesn't speak up.

The lowest-int one is thinking I don't have to work today? The not-Perry is real nice for doing that!

Ishmael frowns. A compassionate guard, an idiot and someone to smart to be just a guard.

As he sits down on the manacles looking glum he looks to the other four convicts and tries to pick up their thoughts to get some clue of how they perceived this situation which in turn might give him an idea of whats going on.

Their thoughts vary in wording, but they seem to come down to "I'm glad a dumb con save me from having to fight beavers today."

Deciding the intelligent guard is the best bet Ishmael looks around the boat to see where the sack with all the white dust is located. He then waits for a little while for things to calm down.

[planswalker]

The sack is in the center of the boat and is still about half-full.

The prisoners start poling back to the shore and nothing will interrupt them if you don't start something.

Ishmael decides its time to act.

He sits on his hands to muffle any sound and uses the ring of lockpicking to cast knock on the manacle lock trying to hide the movement if anyone is looking at him.

As the man tries to grapple him, he practically lets him use all his energy to do so and then... activating the freedom of movement on his vest he slips away.
