Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak. Duh.
Daimyo Kubota. For his NPC prestige class.
Adolescent Black Dragon. How can I not give it to someone who vomited corn on Belkar?
Yukyuk. This little jerk has gone through too much to be swept by Thog now.Last edited by Mike Havran; 2013-02-13 at 07:20 AM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak
Can I vote four times for him? He's the central pillar that makes Team Evil interesting. If there had to be only one of them in the comic, I'd definitely choose him over Xykon.
Daimyo Kubota
I didn't like him that much, but the confrontation scene with Therkla and Elan was one of the most dramatic in the entire comic, despite what the Therkla hatedom thinks. 593's final panel was the best of OotS, in my opinion. And since all of this was caused by Kubota, I definitely vote for him.
Adolescent Black Dragon
I don't really like the imp.
Thog
He's funny, and Yukyuk was relatively unimportant and boring.

Oh sorry, I just scrolled down the comments and didn't really pay attention. It just makes my vote even more certain, heh.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
RedCloak Not even a contest, particularly if you read SoD.
Kubota
Despite the fact that he really made my skin crawl, that was his point as a character, so I guess I'll vote for him. However it's mostly because the huecuva was the least fun of 3 already minor characters.
Adolescent Black Dragon
I'm surprised to see so much love for the Pit Fiend, since he was a bit of a whiner. Also, the ABD had one of my favorite lines (the hit points total one) and was the "innocent" who started the whole Familicide mess. And he had a stash of PlayDrake! Come on people :)
Thog
Yukyuk wasn't my favorite kobold (Poor Yokyok ^^) and though Thog isn't one of my favorite characters ever, the fight between him and Roy was one of my favorites of the entire series. And he had the Not-nale monologue, so he's an easy pick over the most recent psychotic kobold.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
All of these are relatively easy.
Redcloak, for being an awesome 3-dimensional villain with a sense of humor. Also, for the having the guts required to attempt to USE an epic lich sorcerer who could easily crush you.
Kotuba, for being a character you love to hate.
Pit Fiend, because he was funnier.
Thog, because he's one of the funniest characters in the whole strip.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
The first pair is easy--I've been cheering for Redcloak for most of the comic.
I don't really care about either character in the next one, so Daimyo Kubota wins for his non-traditional gender roles.
I really like both of these characters--I went back and forth, but I think Adolescent Black Dragon wins for his mother's sake.
Thog. Just Thog.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak - This wasn't a contest to begin with, and was even less of one thanks to SoD.
Kubota - I hate him, but as people have pointed out, that was his purpose.
Pit Fiend - The ABD was okay, but the Pit Fiend was the funnier of the two.
Thog - I mean, duhLast edited by HedgehogRanger; 2013-02-13 at 03:35 PM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak vs. Amun-Zora
Redcloak is easily one of the most interesting characters in the comic; I couldn’t even remember who Amun-Zora was.
Daimyo Kubota vs. Huecuva
Kubota was one of those characters you love to hate, while the Huecuva was the least interesting of the pseudo-Xykons.
Pit Fiend vs. Adolescent Black Dragon
A tough one. Pit Fiend by a hair.
Yokyok vs. Thog
I very nearly voted for Yokyok, because of his cool mount and because Thog is so wildly overrated (I personally find Nale much funnier). Still, Yokyok’s rôle was such a minor one that Thog wins; besides, I refuse to dislike him just because others like him.Last edited by Tannhaeuser; 2013-02-13 at 04:23 PM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak
Kubota ... for having the most glorious character death yet in the entire strip. I think I literally cheered.
Young Black Dragon ... A much more interesting fight than the unreasonably-sized fellow. Both were funny, but the dragon had a lot more good D&D-mechanics involvement and a lot more impact on long-term character development.
thog, because he's got a couple of choice lines that make me almost understand the Forums' adoration for him. I think 341 has to be his finest moment. You can call me Draz.

Also of note:
- Winning Entry of Gestalt Build Challenge IV
- 3rd Place in Iron Chef XI (Blade Bravo)
- Judge of Iron Chef XXIII (Divine Champion)

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak is one of the best characters in the entire comic, and he'll probably be getting my vote for a long time to come.
Kubota is one of the few OOTS characters that I actually dislike. No, I don't love to hate him, I simply dislike him. That said, his competition is so weaksauce that I find myself having to vote for him, and at least his death was an awesome moment.
The Adolescent Black Dragon wins this one easily for me, as I find the Pit Fiend incredibly forgettable. "Your hit points total" wins it for me.
Thog over yet another kobold. While Thog isn't my favorite character, the humor he brings to the comic easily puts him over the top here.

I can't help but notice that there's a lot more people voting for Thog who insist they aren't part of his fandom than there are admitted Thog fans.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak
VS
Amun-Zora
An easy one, as I couldn't really remember who Amun-Zora was.
Daimyo Kubota
VS
Huecuva
Another easy one; Kubota was a strong contender in the Character I Would Most Want To Punch In The Face contest, whereas the Huecuva was not especially memorable.
Pit Fiend
VS
Adolescent Black Dragon
Close one; both were interesting encounters and good fight scenes, with some great lines too. I have a soft spot for dragons though, so our Playdrake reader gets my vote.
Yukyuk
VS
Thog
Kobold of the Week vs. everyone's favourite Linear Guild half-orc? No brainer. The prison was full of British officers who had sworn to die, rather than be captured.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Amun-Zora. Same reasoning as Gift Jeraff, though I do love me some Redcloak.
Daimyo Kubota. Man, but he was annoying and hateful. Voted for the excellent representation of awesome, evil, craptastic D&D polititicians.
Pit Fiend. Don't really care much about either, but the quote picked here won. That song rocks.
Thog. I'm not even the biggest Thog fan, but this one was pretty easy.Cuthalion's art is the prettiest art of all the art. Like my avatar.

Redcloak east
Daimyo Kubota meh, don't care for either, but he's more memorable
Pit Fiend another match-up I don't care much about, but the pit fiend had more funny lines
Thog another easy one

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak
Kubota
Pit Fiend is barely better than the alternative. The dragon could have been more reasonable when dealing with the adventurers, though.
Thog is more likable than the kobold that attacked a cat.

Redcloak
Kubota
Adolescent Black Dragon because I don't even remember the pit fiend
Thog because he's more of a major character and the kobold wasn't remotely interesting. And because his adventure with Elan was fun.Last edited by LadyEowyn; 2013-02-15 at 03:04 PM.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak. No contest. I'll save my praise for him for a harder matchup.
Huecuva. Yes, it was just another plot device, barely a character at all, but I really hated Kubota. Not that he was a bad character or anything, he was just such an enormous jerk without being a particularly interesting jerk. I didn't enjoy his presence.
Adolescent Black Dragon. He wasn't on for long but I liked him, especially at that time when the comic didn't have the developed depth it has now. I liked how Rich turned a simple monster into something interesting without the story losing speed.
Thog. Yukyuk is just another Linear Guild Kobold. Thog may be a homicidal maniac, but he combines that with being an okay guy, really. He doesn't mean to be mean, he's just under the control of mean people and have never learned differently. And he has a load of really funny lines.

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Redcloak is an interesting character.
Kubota because he was a pretty good bad guy.
Pit Fiend because he had his moments. Plus, the adolescent black dragon wasn't overly interesting.
Thog is one of my favourite characters!

Roy Greenhilt: "What? Don't be ridiculous. I want you to survey the area and tell me where would the most dramatically appropriate area for the dungeon to be located. You know, based on the aesthetics of the scenery, that sort of thing."
Elan: "Oh! Oh! I can do that! I'll make you proud of me, Roy!"

Banjo

Roy. I like Elan more than Roy, but I don't like the limited-manifestation-of-Elan's-personality-which-is-Banjo more than Roy.
Malack. He's nuanced, he's thoughtful, he's dangerous, he's mysterious, he's motivated, he's plot-relevant, he's sucking the blood out of Belkar's macrocephalic head right now. Hell of a day for the lizgreaper to show up in the tourney again, enit?

Re: Favourite Character Tournament
Roy Greenhilt vs. Banjo
As a matter of fact, not only is Banjo nothing without Elan, but he is not really all that funny without Roy. It is Roy's utter exasperation that makes Banjo really funny.
Malack vs. Daigo Da-
In terms of character, I think I find them equally interesting, so this one was decided purely on the artistic design of the character. The look of an albino Lizardfolk in flowy black robes and a staff is just pretty cool.
Ha! Especially now that I have read the strip in which Malack turns into “The Vampire Monk, or, The Bloodless Benedictine!”Last edited by Tannhaeuser; 2013-02-19 at 03:34 PM.
