In related news, I found my first Very Large UFO. It destroyed one of my interceptors, damaged another, and then landed. When my squad landed it only took two turns for the aliens to bust out some kind of explosive laser that exploded in a 10 square radius. Losing Durkon and V, two of my best soldiers, in a single shot? Reload.

And by comparion, the largest nautical ship ever built on Earth is approximately only the volume¹ of one of our Shadowfang Mk I class frigates, one of our upper-end-size escort vessels (and for comparions, that is very approximately only about 1.5 times the volume of an Enterprise-class aircraft carrier.)

And a Shadowfang has a maximum weapons range of three hundred thousand kilometers and a maximum (i.e. relativistic-distortion-free) speed of about 0.9 c on sublight engines. (Cruising speed is about 0.1 c, standard attack speed between 0.1 to 0.4 c.)

So, yeah.

I'll give you a character synopsis, and so long as the plot is Obvious and Interesting, or relevant to the character, I'll play along. Yes, this means that I will play akin with an obvious plot that is outside my characterization. Because if either the game or the character is superfluous, odds are its not the game

Starry's ship was a physical manifestation of budding amorousness between two young ladies. It flew on wings of hope and fired bondage as it's main weapons - not chains, but bondage. Like, conceptually. I think at that point size is sort of irrelevant.

Also, same thing to you as Maxtronaut: sure, your ship is awesome, but then it's all about the ship. This isn't war gaming! Yet! Getting all the ponies to RP a warfare is a logistical flustercluck that would make me physically ill.

Technically it is two words, outside of the forum filter; it is UK-engineering-derived-speak for "rough, order-of-magnitude calculations, as scribbled on any available scrap of writing material (such as the back (or inside of an empty) a packet of cigarettes." Stemming from a time when smoking was more prevalent (and before it was understood as a health hazard); I would hazard a guess to about WW2 period and perhaps a bit past. (As my Dad says, most engineers think with a pencil (and, though a necromancer, I have enough engineer in me that I do the same most of the time.))

I believe the US equivilent is "back of napkin/envelope" which is not only longer, but less snappy...

You need to go read the Pony Psychology Series. It's probably the darkest fic I know that stays close to canon, develops everyone with both flaws and strengths. EDIT: X-com update: well, I was doing fairly well, I had just started getting power armor, and things were generally looking up. I was in a Muton base, trying to get through without losing half my guys.

Then the save file broke. I reloaded, and there was just a blank screen instead of the battlefield. I can't see any way to fix it, but I can abandon the battle. Which means choosing between losing all my best (and most advanced) troops, or losing 22 hours of gameplay. This makes me a very sad pony.

Eh, I think it would depend on the scale of the conflict. Most conflicts in ponythread tend to draw in Boffinspark and Silent Night, for example, and after that things have a tendency to spiral out of control fairly quickly.

Other epics well worth looking at are It's a Dangerous Business, Going out of Your Door (AJ, Dash and Rarity undertake an LotR-like quest and quite possibly my favourite fanfic yet), It Takes a Village (Spike growing up and Ponyville helping him find his place - in Ponyville) and Under the Northern Sky which is Twilight, Spike and Luna off doing diplomacy... of a sort... with reindeer in the north, and is in a similar sort of vein to Dangerous Business (lots of world-building.)

And, of course, all the GitP pony fanfic as collected in the OP (I think we're up-to-date now), of which I can personally recommend Thanqol's Do Not Serve These Ponies; partly because it was my initial idea that set him off, and mostly because it's hilarious. And, it goes without saying, PhantomFox's Sunny Skies All Day Long, which even now still is first in the "sort by top fics" on FiMfiction...

I will not go into exhaustive detail, as there are enough ponies on the attempt.

But, in brief, Hopereaver and I... acquired command of the XCom facility. I immediatly set them to work on creating coldbeams, and brought in a number of Aotrs scientists and a few claw-picked troopers.

I then brainwashed the remaining soldiers -

Um, I don't think hitting them in the head with your rocket launcher until they can't form coherent thoughts is really brainwashing, cheif...

- I then brainwashed the remaining soldiers, and assigned them new designations - Peons One through Ten, and prepared a strike force. Our interceptors shot down a UFO in Scotland, not vastly far from our base, and I personally lead the strike team, consisting of myself (with the rocket launcher, because that's mine, fraggers!), Hopereaver (with two pistols), Klastat (captain of one of our platoons), the Star-Sergeant, and troopers Darkflay, Soulreaver, Gloomwrack and Nighthaunt, and Peons One and Two for... scouting. The Peons, of course, needed no armament; their job was simply to locate the enemy. Why waste money on automated robots, when cheap labour is available? After all, if they die, it's not like we need to pay their maintenance, is it?

Peon One did his job locating our first victim, by being shot in the head in an upstairs room. He served his purpose well. Klatstat finished that one off. We encountered some more aliens, and Soulreaver was foolish enough to get shot while we eliminated them. I dealt with one (kaboom! Ahahahahaha!), as did Hopereaver and Nighthaunt; the latter as the last idiot charged out of the door of the spacecraft into our waiting guns. Soulreaver at least had the sense to finish off his attacker, before the imbecile burned apart... I must ensure we have both medikits - for our living members - well, mostly Derpy - and some anti-bone-burn supplies shortly, so as to avoid a repeat of Soulreaver's stupidity. Almost amazingly, Peon Two survived the mission! Oh well, there's always next time... I have promoted myself and Hopereaver to sergeant - in the XCom ranking system, of course; I wouldn't care, but for the extra... priviledges that allows. I also promoted Nighthaunt - she did a good job. Klastat will have to make do with being a squaddie, which will inevitably lead to Hilarity as he is out-ranked by his junior...! All fun and games... Until some idiot slow-burns to deanimation...

The constant need for one-upmanship and arms races is one of the reasons I don't do freeform forum roleplay much anymore.

My handle Spamotron started out on the Keenspot Forums as a 50's monster robot parody that had been driven (more) insane when he was upgraded with an internet connection. It ended up as a transdimensional God AI with a distributed intelligence networked across a few trillion bodies in a thousand parallel realities armed with comic book superscience and magitech looted from said realities.

When everyone is playing Nigh-Omnipotent it gets really boring really fast.

One of AdmiralTigerClaw's other stories Arrow 18 Mission Logs http://www.fimfiction.net/story/1361...3A-Lone-Ranger is a human in Equestria story that is extremely well thought out.

The Diary of John, the Least Interesting Stallion in Equestria http://www.fimfiction.net/story/3546...n-in-Equestria. has a ton of quiet slice of life charm. Here's one line from it "I dread the very thought of such an exhilarating sport of golf with such an out-of-control pony as Miss Fluttershy."

Aurorae http://www.fimfiction.net/story/43923/Aurorae is an adventure story by a newer author that deserves some love. Though its still in the setup stage at the moment.

Rites of Ascension http://www.fimfiction.net/story/3984...s-of-Ascension is a very good Alicorn Twilight/Adventure story. But the author CVBrony just had surgery and is experiencing some complications that make it hard to type so future updates may be a long time coming.

One last topic: Recently there seems to have been an explosion of Twilight/Rarity shipfics but I just don't see the chemistry at all. Anyone want to give a stab at explaining it to me?

Why does this matter?


You think of airship battles, the first thing that comes to mind is usually two ships, with the crews swashbuckling between the two of them. That's neat!
But throwing ships at each other gets pretty cumbersome, and loses out on a lot; what is an interesting story on the personal level because a missed footnote at the scale of 400 ships. Suddenly the actual story stuff involving the crew doesn't matter, it's just about the ships. Which, you know, fine and all, but when you are dealing with a couple ponies, and you rely entirely on a fleet, that is ironically setting yoursel up to lose.

See, there won't be any fleet level engagements. Instead, the only engagements thr show up will be at the personnel level, and while you've got "the best soldiers in history" the other side I likely to be a rag-tag band of heroes, which trump soldiers.

I don't get why do many folks jump Straight to the top, where actual gaming can't happen. The difference between a fleet and an army is when one "target" goes down, I just took out a whole crew instead of a person.

Eh, if you're referring to the story, than this behemoth hasn't bern constructed yet. Yes, there will be fleet-level engagements. A simgle group of soldiers can't fight an entire war on their own.

Also, the 400 "best soldiers" thing was just be being a jerk. Sorry.

I cannot believe that no one has recommended Fallout Equestria yet. Amazing read and it is still the best in my opinion.

Ouch. No multiple save files? I always have a couple of extra save files in case things going really wrong and I need to reload more then a single turn ago.

The concepts for Professor Boffinspark and Igor originated after I went on a Portal playing binge while simultaneously reading Guards Guards. Essentially, Boffinspark began as a combination of Professor Hubert Farnsworth and Cave Johnson, with his assistant Igor as an obvious expy of the Librarian. Eventually, during Midnight’s attempted Haremageddon, the professor seized control of the local OFC, which wound up becoming a running gag for him.
Then he and Silent Night crossed paths, and things rapidly spiraled completely out of control.

I originally conceived Prince Regeln for a fic I’ve been wanting to write for a while about Spike learning that he isn’t the only dragon living among ponies, with Regeln acting as a mentor for Spike, who’s been through the various ups and downs of being a dragon among ponies and who can let Spike know what he’s in for.

My idea was for each OC that I make be a little portion of myself (sounds cheesy, I know). Clockwork is the technology-loving part of me. Silent Strings is the shy musician part of me who doesn't talk much. Kanji's the adventurous part of me, & Nova's the part of me that loves SPAAAAAAACE.

As for actually thinking up the characters, it was just a stream of conciousness thing.

Silent actualy just originated as my voice during the Great Ponythread Cult War, and eventualy got a name and a set of powers. Of course, he went from a rotten pegusi to a putrid alicorn to muffan to putrid changeling/dragon hybrid to putrid alicorn and then a mouse, but his basic power level never changed. Nightcore was originaly just a way to play off every joke one could make about being related to a evil cult leader ever, but soon became the angry, sociopathic mare who could probably do what Silent's doing straight. Take every single henchwomen/daddie's little monster in fiction, put it into a blender, and then give it a healthy dose of a horrible childhood and a willingess to eliminate her caretaker from the world of the living, and you get there healthy relationship./sarcasm

The entire fire pony family was a one-off attempt to end Boffensparks life, and they ended up with about five members of a freakishly disfunctinal family. Glory was just a pony (?) to play off Nightcore and evolved into a companion of unstated importance.

I must ensure we have both medikits - for our living members - well, mostly Derpy - and some anti-bone-burn supplies shortly, so as to avoid a repeat of Soulreaver's stupidity. Almost amazingly, Peon Two survived the mission! Oh well, there's always next time... I have promoted myself and Hopereaver to sergeant - in the XCom ranking system, of course; I wouldn't care, but for the extra... priviledges that allows. I also promoted Nighthaunt - she did a good job. Klastat will have to make do with being a squaddie, which will inevitably lead to Hilarity as he is out-ranked by his junior...! All fun and games... Until some idiot slow-burns to deanimation...

Looking forward to more of these. Using unequiped grunts as scouts is a tactic I hadn't considered. I mostly just send in whoever is the weakest first (which is actually Roy Greenhilt at the moment, now that Ian Starshine is dead and Eugene Greenhilt is in the infirmary).

Little tip for you: Dual wielding pistols doesn't help, because each shot takes up time units. The off-hand is better off with a grenade or stun rod.

Well, Elixir is just the pony version of Diego. Diego was simply a character from an MMO that I ended up using as my online persona. His talents and skills have kinda evolved as I played new games and discovered new series. I still can't decide on an exact power level for him.

I do have a crazy overpowered OC I created from before ponythread. It basically started off life as a D&D experiment after I first discovered the Epic rules and got steadily more powerful and rediculous from there.

Other OCs often just start out as a single vague idea and go on from there.

I, of course, need do nothing but quote chapter and verse on the Aotrs and our capabilities; the Aotrs had been existance for two and half-thousand years, even before I personally became aware of them, and even that was a good couple of decades prior to ponythread (and why, of course, I can be so mathmatically precise with much of the data, as I can extrapolate from first principles, or simply pull the existing information).

Well considering the amount of chaff you get with recruitment that you don't want to keep, why just sack 'em? Them tanks is expensive!

Yeah, I twigged that during that first mission. It let me equip two, so I thought there was a slim chance you could use both. (And Hopereaver duel-wields anyway, so I thought it was worth a shot!)
