IIRC the claim was that nothing in the show is response to the fandom, and the writers aren't allowed to read fanfiction or anything like that. The toys and merch are obviously marketed to the people with money [which would be the older portion of the audience as well as kids' parents].

Had a hilarious little playtime with my daughter the other night. She was quoting Twilight from "It's About Time" and when she got to the line "I'm just going to have to STOP TIME!", I suddenly had a weird inspiration.
I played the theme to Back to the Future and used Applejack as Marty McFly as traveling back in time accidently on an applecart. Although my daughter is too young to know the movie reference, she did pick up on the aspect of time travel and the tried to fit in Dr. Whooves to save AJ. LOL.
