Once again the Alpha Legionnaire crawls away, hiding within the smoke. The sorcerer had tired of this game of hide-and-seek and having to deal with some force field the Astartes is unable to remove. There also seemed to have arrived another Astartes, one who Setesh hadn't noticed until just now running towards him. He must have come with the World Eaters, judging by the horns, a follower of the Lord of Slaughter no doubt. He could deal with the Alpha if he so wanted. The other Astartes seemed to have troubles following the telepathic instructions Setesh gave him before. How hard can it be? the sorcerer thought.

Setesh shifted his mental focus and the field of unreality surrounding him faded as he descended to the solid ground, and with his warp-enhanced speed he ran as fast as he could back towards the inadept Astartes having troubles. As he approached the khornate he felt something quite unsettling. Something pounding against his mind. The mental strain sustaining his enhanced speed felt heavier. "The sneaky one's all yours." the sorcerer said quickly as he passed the khornate, moving far enough away not to get caught in a aggressive swing of opportunity as he ran past. A short distance past him and the feeling ended. A moment later he had arrived near the three Astartes. "Hmm." he uttered as he arrived, inspecting the scene. Not much had changed since he last left to deal with the Alpha sorcerer.

Seeing the sorcerer returm to reality and spring past him wrapped in a field of some sort of sorcery moving far faster than normal he resists, barely, the urge to reach out with claw and blade and tear the wizard apart.

instead he watches the smoke intently. Readying to attack anything that darest appear from the smoke or move within.

When the sorcerer got to the Alphas and the newcomer he had told to kill one and keep the other unconscious, he was quite disappointed with what he found. They both still seemed dazed from what the Night Lord had done to them, but they were still both alive, and the Astartes was just kicking one of them in the head - without doing much it seemed. Setesh sighed at the Astartes as he swung his daemon weapon to slay the Alpha who still had his helmet on, Vrat'zaen's vicious teeth wreathed in warpfire immolating the alpha where he laid with a high-pitched cackle. The sorcerer turned to the newcomer. "It is not that hard to knock someone out."

Vrat'zaen plunges into the Alpha's chest. Warpfire courses throughout the prone form as the warrior's soul is consumned for Vrat'zaen's ravenous hunger. Unholy flame bursts from the joints and sockets of the armor, creating quite the display. All present can see shrieking ghosts dancing in agony throughout the Warpfire. After what feels like an eternity to everyone watching, though it couldn't have been more than a few seconds, the fire dies down. Smoke rises from the armor, and the head slumps to the side.

Skyrar stares intently at the smoke, but can perceive nothing within it's depths. Nothing lunges forth to attack, to his great disappointment. In a short time, the smoke clears, and Skyrar can see nothing in the vicinity.

With just a rather reeling Alpha Legionnaire left, discounting the one who's hidden and the khornate seems to keep guard for, Setesh's lust for ripping this one's mind open and devouring everything within flared up as the warpfire immolating the newly killed dissapated. The sorcerer probed at the mind of the Alpha on the ground, as he was taking subsequent kicks to the head from the newcomer, fully intent on piecing the defenses and tearing it open. "Keep him down until I have no more use of him." he said, as he slipped into full concentration.

The Astartes knows a great deal of things. Most of them consist of a network of contacts and informants spread throughout and beyond Imperial space, whose help the Alpha Legion frequently makes use of in their secretive operations. Of most interest to the immediate situation is that, yes, the Alpha Legion instigated the heresy in the Word Bearers. They did it by offering certain proofs (exactly what is unknown to him) to the Word Bearers of a ancient and terrible treachery in their ranks.

Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers, called Urizen, Aurellian, Son of Chaos, and many more names besides, ordered the construction of the Templum Inficio several centuries after the Great Heresy. Millions of slaves and cultists worked themselves to death to complete the great structure, and daemons were woven into almost every building block. The massive temple took over three decades to complete, and when it was done it was the greatest structure on Sicarus, the Word Bearers' home.

At the completion, Lorgar, accompanied solely by his most trusted followers, Erebus and Kor Phaeron, entered the great temple. For six days and six nights, nothing came in or out. On the seventh day, Erebus and Kor Phaeron emerged, without the Holy Primarch. They proclaimed to the Legion that Lorgar had communed with the Chaos Gods in the depths of the the temple, and that it was his will that he should be left undisturbed to continue his meditations. Therefore, they decreed that the Templum Inficio was to be sealed behind blood-soaked, daemon-infused doors, to be guarded for all eternity, if need be, by an eternal company of possessed Astartes, bound forever to the sacred site. Thereafter, none have entered or left the temple, and the Legion still awaits the return of its Holy Primarch.

The story the Alpha Legion told is much darker. It alleges that, during the construction, certain rites were performed, certain bargains were sealed, certain runes were inscribed, such that a room in the heart of the temple was filled with Warp-forged chains. Chains strong enough to bind the greatest of daemons. Even a Primarch. As the story is told, Erebus and Kor Phaeron lured Lorgar to this room, then ambushed him. For six days and six nights they fought, the traitorous duo summoning the legions of the Dark Gods to aid them. Lorgar resisted and his fury was great, but in the end, the treacherous sons prevailed. Lorgar was bound by unbreakable chains, sealed forever into a room at the temple's dark heart. From there, the two had little difficulty seizing control of the Legion, and the Word Bearers have unknowingly served usurpers ever since. Or, so says the Alpha Legion.

The point of the whole exercise was a simple distraction. They wanted the Word Bearers in the area divided and bloodied, too distracted and weak to oppose the Alpha Legion when they activate several sleeper cells located across the Screaming Vortex in an effort to usurp Curze, the Hollows, and Q'Sal itself. What they planned to do next is unknown to this particular Astartes, but he was told the Word Bearers would oppose it.

Two final nuggets of information seem interesting - the Coryphus of this Host is actually an Alpha Legion agent. The real one was killed in battle years ago and replaced by a specially-trained, surgically altered duplicate. They don't think Akaduros has caught on. Secondly, the sorcerer's quarters are near here, and he had a mirror infused with a powerful daemon that showed him information.

The sorcerer's psychic tendrils of his mind made short work of the Alpha's futile resistance and was tearing and ripping his mind open in a matter of seconds, devouring all the information contained within, sating his longing hunger for knowledge.

What he found was quite intruiging. This is grand. The realization that this had been in the works made him want to find out more. He was a little bitter that the most likely more senior member of the Alpha Legion had gotten away, and thus was unable to offer up his mind to the hungering sorcerer. On the other hand Setesh was somewhat impressed with the manipulations and subterfuge the Alpha Legion had carried out against and within the Word Bearers. It was disappointing they were not fully dedicated to the Master of Lies himself, Tzeentch. The work they could accomplish then.

The Alpha Legion's plans to usurp some of the more major worlds in the vortex, in particular the powerful industrial Hollows and Q'Sal, seemed strange in particular. Such large endeavours was not to be taken lightly, and it would not be easy. Q'Sal was full of powerful human sorcerers and others, a world Setesh had been to himself in the past, a whole world dedicated to the Changer. He had troubles believing the Alphas would be able to manage that, but he did not doubt the possibility existed -- one possibility he did not want to come to pass.

Setesh thought a moment about his course of action. Would he share what he had learnt with the Word Bearers or would he keep this to himself for the time being? Seeing how the Coryphus was compromised, and the only way to share his knowledge was directly with the Dark Apostle, the former would be problematic. Not to mention that he was loathe to share knowledge. But their objective was a problem, and he would most likely not be able to change things by himself. For now, he'd just leave the world. He had to recover from the wounds he had sustained here. Important decisions were best taken out of the fray of battle, and in more esoteric circumstances.

"Enough." the sorcerer said to the kicking Astartes as Vra'tzaen flared up in warpfire and promptly slew the Alpha on the floor, useless keeping alive having already offered up all he knew to Setesh. He quickly glanced around the area in search for any useful equipment they had. Finding nothing interesting he said "Take what you want, unless the Night Lord turns out to be alive. Then you'll have to fight over it with him." before he swiftly continued back to the dead sorcerer and the downed Night Lord, past the alert khornate. "It would seem you scared him away." he told the berserker, or whatever he was. The queeziness he felt before was there again. He had to have some kind of null item or similar. It was best to stay a bit from him at most times, he figured. It was long ago since he last felt that sensation, which is why it took him some time to recognize it.

The smoke had by now cleared and the stealthy Alpha disappeared. Setesh ignored the downed Night Lord, who seemed to still be alive judging by minute movement, as he now had time to search the sorcerer for something esoteric or warp-related bound to turn up in some, perhaps hidden, compartment of his power armour. The force sword the Alpha sorcerer had used he investigated as well, hoping to find some kind of identifying runes or so if he was unable to turn up anything from the armour or accessories.

So basically killing off the Astartes (I'm kinda figuring there's no need to test), checking for anything interesting in the ways of equipment on or around them (I assumed there was nothing interesting to Setesh), went to dead sorcerer and check his force weapon and armour/equipment for anything interesting (or what there might be -- it sounded like he was missing any visible warp trinkets) and maybe that he's got stuff hidden. Setesh would also check if there was something out of the ordinary regarding their force fields seeing as how mr. sneaky did not throw his away when compelled to.

If mr. sneaky's dropped weapons are still present after he ran away, he'd claim the plasma pistol.

Setesh finds that the Legionaire lacks any particularly obvious Warp charms on his person. On close investigation, though, his helmet is reveal to have a beautifully crafted psychic hood woven into its interior. The craftsmanship is so good that the helmet looks and functions no differently than any other Astartes helmet, while concealing the fact that this man is a sorcerer from those not blessed with psychic power. Setesh notes an odd rune on it.

    Spoiler
    Show
His helmet is a BC psychic hood, but the mechanisms are woven together and so the hood cannot be removed from the helmet. Setesh would have to wear that helmet to use it.

Make a Forbidden Lore (Screaming Vortex) test to see if Setesh recognizes the rune.

The sorcerer's blade, meanwhile, proves on investigation to have been cleverly disguised as a power sword. There are no runes or other such blatent markings on it, and to the uninitiated it would appear as an ordinary power blade.it even has a faux activation rune (which does nothing when pressed) to complete the guise. Evidently this man preferred that most people not know he was a sorcerer.

In addition, the man was carrying an ordinary bolt pistol, two Astartes frag grenades, two smoke grenades, and a heavily encrypted data-slate.

Quite an effort to appear like a lesser being. Setesh's opinion on the matter was quite unsurprising for a powerful psyker dedicated to the Lord of Sorcery. He took pride in his psychic ability and had little motivation to hide that fact. He was unsure why the Alpha sorcerer had, though as his armour was not painted in the Word Bearer colours so it was assumably not because he was an infiltrator at the moment.

The helmet was impressive. The psychic hood contained within blew Setesh's quite poorly maintained one out of the water. It was entirely worth keeping hold of so he could find a heretek or someone more technically inclined to evaluate it, and possibly appropriately convert it for his use -- Setesh's knowledge of such things were quite rudimentary. A rune on it he did not recognize most likely indicated something. Perhaps he had to find and ask someone with better understanding of the area.

The force sword fascinated him. The disguise was quite interesting, one he had not thought of himself. Then again, he had little motivation to hide the fact that he was a sorcerer -- just who exactly he was and what Legion he originally came from. Though it was kind of obvious when the sword was used in combat due to the lack of power field. It was just for non-combat situations, obviously. It as well was worth holding on to, as such a item could prove more valuable than just any "ordinary" force sword. The sorcerer also found a data-slate, assumably encrypted considering who they were, which he stored for later.

"There are some grenades on his person if such things interest you khornate." he said, seeing as how they did not interest him. This was not an act of kindness though, it was merely a way to deflect some of the obvious animosity the khornate had towards him for the simple fact that he was a psyker.

Untrained Lore test: (1d100)[26] vs 22 -- is it a common lore screaming vortex test? The forbidden lore part confused me. I tested with the former, which is an untrained skill for Setesh.

Did he find out anything in regards to the force field? Is it built-in somehow in the sorcerer as well? He'd be quite interested in that, though he likes trinkets.

Was the weapons mr sneaky dropped gone? If the plasma pistol is not on the ground anymore he'll take the bolt pistol which he assumes is higher than standard craftmanship -- the grenades does not interest him.

A little more investigation reveals another fascinating discovery - the sorcerer's force field is intricately woven into the interior of his chest plate, concealing it from view and protecting it from physical harm. As before, it is attached such that it cannot be removed from the armor. No one who did not already know about it would guess that it was there. As before, the same rune is emblazoned on it.

Speaking of a rune, Setesh recognizes that it is a rune of Q'Sal. Specifically, of the desert city of Tarnor.

Looking around, Setesh sees that the apparent leader of the Legionaires took his weapons with him when he fled.

The khornate warrior looks at the clearing smoke and the absence of the enemy with it. Sheathing the chain sword with a wistful grunt he tromps up towards the sorcerer busily looting the dead.

"Warlock. It seems most are dead. I thirsted for blood and none was to be had. Dod you learn much from his mind as you ravaged it?" Even with his dislike of psykers he can guess what is happening when a warlock stares at another person's skull for almost a full minute without moving.

It must be some kind of Alpha Legion custom design of integrated force field technology. He could not remember coming across anything similar recently, though his memory was not perfect. It might be too cumbersome to bring the armour with him to have it checked by an expert to see what could be salvaged, his own armour having suffered much wear and tear, his maintenance not keeping up with time. That human heretek had made some minor adjustments previously though. Come to think of it, where is that heretek now? The sorcerer had not seen her since he felt the upper levels of the temple to go in his hunt through the tunnels.

"Hm? Not enough." he replied to the khornate's question, a remarkably curious warrior of the Skull Lord, as he was roused from his pondering thoughts regarding what he had learnt. "Fair enough. Though then you would want to kill something, and only live one I have seen is the one who crawled away." He paused a moment, actually paying some attention to the downed Night Lord. "I believe one of your more kindred spirits need some assistance." the sorcerer said as he gestured towards Slathissin.

"I have another destination, but with that last one still around I am assuming you would want to be nearby to claim his head as I am sure he want to pounce on me for slaying his commander." In reality, Setesh did not feel comfortable in his current state to go alone to the sorcerer's quarters, investigating potential valuable possessions and arcane and forbidden lore.

"I hope you will." the sorcerer said as he walked up to the Night Lord, who was most likely whimpering. The Alpha who escaped was the only one who knew who it was that interrupted the little party in the secret corridors, and Setesh prefered, just like the Alpha Legion, that such information not be available to whomever. The sorcerer laid his hand on the Night Lord's armour and channeled the warp through his body, miniscule arcs of purple energy surging through the power armour, healing it. This was the second time in a short while he had brought him back from the brink of death. He was most definitely in the sorcerer's debt by now. "If you are still conscious, get up. We should not linger." he sternly said to the Night Lord and began walking towards the sorcerer's quarters he had identified within the Alpha's mind, fully expecting the rest to follow.

I am assuming Skyrar just refered to him as "warlock" again, and not as a son of Magnus as he wouldn't know that by just looking at Setesh. If he was just guessing then Setesh wouldn't acknowledge it anyway. ^^

I'm guessing the Alpha did not know the combination. Do I need to do a logic test or something to spend a few moments to attempt to figure the combination out before I just take a more unconvential approach that may or may not involve daemon weapons?

The information Setesh ripped from the Alpha's mind did not contain any code for this door.

You can make a Hard (-20) Logic Test to try and figure out the code. Alternatively, you can attempt to bash the door down, walk through it while incorporeal, dig through the surrounding walls, or anything else you can think of.

Setesh spent a short moment analyzing what he had learnt about the sorcerer and other Alpha Legion-related information, as well as this particular cell's behaviour. He tried a few different codes before one actually succeeded -- something which kind of pleasantly surprised him. "Stay outside while I survey the area." the sorcerer said, not wanting any khornate with some kind of null field close dulling his senses, and entered the room looking through it for whatever interesting artifacts or information he could find.

The sorcerer's room is much like his armor: harsh and utilitarian, without any of the usual flourishes and grandiose symbols most sorcerers choose to decorate with. The room is walled with a gunmetal grey metal. There is a solitary summoning circle near the opposite wall. As with the rest of the room, it appears calculated and precise rather than ostentatious. It looks to have been carved into the floor with lasers.

To the left side of the room, there are three book shelves, each filed with perhaps four or five dozen tomes. As before, these are not bizarre, pulsating books covered in human hide and glowing runes, but neatly-packed tomes bound in a black plastic coating. There are no names on the spines, merely silver sequences of letters and numbers. They appear to have been arranged first by letter order, then by the following number order.

On the right side, there sits a steel desk and accompanying chair, sized for Astartes. A small cogitator array sits on top. It has a display screen, and an input pad to type with. An open book lies on the right side of the desk, a small hand mirror to the left. As with everything else, these are quite ordinary-looking and not at all like one would expect to find in the study of a sorcerer. The desk has no drawers.

Setesh was a little disturbed by the Alpha sorcerer's tastes. He walked up to the bookshelf and perused over a few random ones, trying to grasp what kind of lore they contained and their titles -- perhaps noticing a pattern if any, all meanwhile his warpsight was focused several times in case he had missed something. That mirror registered quite strongly, not surprisingly as he had already known it contained a daemon of some sort.

Assumed the book contained a daemonic presence, if that's not the case I'll edit later.

The books Setesh grabs turn out to be a tome on the geography of the worlds of the Calixis Sector, a dissertation on the biology of the Eldar, a series of musings by Ahirman on the nature of sorcery vs. psychic abilities, and a Book of Lorgar.

Seeing as most of books had been less interesting things, or such things he had already read or knew, he checked a closed his eyes and picked one at random trying to channel the Weaver of Fate through him hoping that his devotion would lead him to the book with the most significance in the bookshelf. Then there was the open book at the chair. That one he'd go for after, seeing as it was bound to contain something of value.

Setesh grabs a book that turns out to be a selection of common culinary recipes in the Imperium, with scribbled-in notes on what types of poison are least detectable in them.

The tome on the table turns out to be a book on Q'Sal, mostly dedicated to its history and political systems. Notes have been added in several places, correcting information that has become out of date, which happens fairly often on worlds held by the Changer.

Seeing as Setesh felt no need to know what poison worked best with what course, he figured there was nothing to be found he didn't know already in the bookshelf. The book on Q'Sal seemed quite handy though, especially considering what he had found out about the Alpha Legion's plans involving Q'Sal and the other worldsin the vortex. He needed to go through it more later.

Then there was the mirror. He was unsure how it worked, or what kind of daemon it might contain. Not feeling very fit to do psychic battle in case of possession, he took the mirror without looking at the reflection -- as that's how he assumed it might work -- and stashed it in a compartment on his person, investigating it later instead. He felt an urge to do one last check for anything hidden, before he left, though.
