I hadn't thought of that! It's...not IMPOSSIBLE, I imagine. And as we've seen, your reiatsu doesn't have to perfectly match your zanpakuto (just look at Prettyboy and his bankai)

Perhaps the secret to creating zanpakuto isn't a secret? I mean, if most people in rukongai knew about shinigami and zanpakuto it isn't that surprising that some of them manage to get one without help from sereitei. Presumably what the zero division guy did was show that it was even possible.

That's kind of what I figured. He comes up with the whole concept of splitting a piece of your soul into one, and it becomes part of the curriculum. It's not obscenely hard, and it doesn't require his help, but he "discovered" it, so to speak.

Honestly I am still leaning towards the family of ichigo each representing one of the major powers, with the hohoball screwing up ichigo who is vizard to daddy's shinigami while quiet girl is quincy while loud is fullbringer (sorry names are escaping me right now)

Not that it matters much to me either way, but I don't recall anything remotely romantic between Rukia and Ichigo. Neither, to my knowledge, have expressed any interest. Orihime had a bit of a side plot to the effect that she's in love with Ichigo, so I'd think the mangaka was going for her. Though I liked the kickboxing girl who's name I forget (Kubo seems to have forgotten her as well).

You mean Tatsuki? She was around in the Fullbring arc. And I think it has been shown that "forgotten" characters can show up out of the blue.

Not directly, but there was the occasional hint of... Not interest, but the possibility of something more developing.

On Rukia's part, first, there's Ichigo's resemblance to Kaien, and it was strongly implied that Rukia was in love with Kaien. (I still think it's a shame Kubo didn't go for the "Ichigo is Kaien's reincarnation and Orihime is Miyako's reincarnation" angle.) Not to mention that Rukia has steadily been gaining more and more respect and affection for Ichigo since the beginning of the series. So far, nothing can be said to be truly romantic, but I can see how those feelings could evolve in that direction.

On Ichigo's part... Well, the guy basically credits Rukia with saving his life - not only literally (which she did), but also metaphorically, since she gave him the means to protect his loved ones, avenge his mother, and basically get himself out of his depression. He's also very comfortable with her - I'd say almost childhood friend-level of comfort.

So, nothing definite either way; they could simply remain very strong friends. But I can see how it could end up differently.

Perhaps, I don't watch the anime. I wouldn't be surprised though if Kubo doesn't resolve any romance at all. Shonen manga seem to be allergic to romance.

Plus there was Fade to Black, the third movie, who's screenwriter was also a screenwriter for the anime. The whole plot revolved around Ichigo trying to save her from being possessed by a hollow (or something) and she's had her memory erased, and he wound up saving her by redoing how Ichigo got his powers, but in reverse. So yeah, definetly strong indication of shipping by the production crew.

I remember lots of interaction between Ishida and Orihime during the Soul Society Arc that could provide good shipping fuel, back then I thought there might be some actual romantic developments between them, with Ichigo x Rukia being a given. Even in the first opening they had a short scene with Ichigo and Rukia looking like the typical arguing couple in denial.

Let me correct myself on when to expect the next chapter of WSJ series:

According to Arlong Park, we can expect the 1/4 WSJ's chapter to be scanlated anytime between 12/25 and 1/2, since shipping is unpredictable around this time.

The 1/21 issue will probably get shipped very early, and then there's a long gap as things should get back to normal by the 1/28 issue.
