I do find it odd indeed. Maybe it is related to our activities the ghoul like creatures.

You enter into the grand double doors. The lobby of the tower is huge, the courtyard has four small gardens in it surrounded by benches where people are sitting talking and reading. The courtyard is surrounded by smaller rooms that appear to be shops, Blacksmiths, general stories, clothing stores. The floor displays an epic battle that looks like it was neither craved or painted into the floor.

There is a Terrance about 15 feet up that has stairs that move on there own leading up to the Terrance. The lift is directly across from the stairs on the Terrance.

You proceed to the stairs and are comfortable raised to the Terrance. You walk over to the lift and the doors open automatically. The doors close behind you. It stays still as if waiting for something.....

    "Th-the ghouls. Of course."

Maechus was not very convinced. As the floor lifted them up to the top of the tower, he felt his off-hand clench to the scabbard of his rapier like a security blanket. Was this how they were to face justice? At the top of a tower, with no easily won escape? Would there be a chance to defend themselves, or was there to simply be an inquisition? Warden preserve them, were they being carried straight into an ambush? Oh, if only he had not thought to take this damning dagger with him, he might have had a chance to prove that he was no murderer. No murderer, only an incompetent guard.

Maechus swallowed his fear, willing his hands away from his weapons. If this was to be a reckoning, he tried to tell himself, it was best if he faced justice with a sense of dignity.

The doors to the lift slide open as you reach your destination. They open to a large dark hall. You can make out many windows that once most have provider light to the room but have now been tinned over. There six columns lining the hall on each side. The only source of light shines down from ceiling illuminating a old man with a graying beard sitting on a throne about 50 feet from the lift's exit. The old man hasn't realized that you have arrived yet.

If this bit of strategic lighting was supposed to intimidate him... it was working. "Well?" he said, "shall we see what is required of...?"

He trailed off as he stepped into the room. It was obvious that he was dreading this entire ordeal; he had to keep his hands from his weapons by sheer force of will. He made his way down the corridor and dropped to one knee in front of the throne, assuming his best guess as to what a respectful bow was, since he had never had had the pleasure of being near nobility before.

Kona seemed not to notice her teammate's fear, being to preoccupied thinking about how this meeting would clearly resolve her farm's difficulties quickly and easily while simultaneously providing her with some sort of convenient excuse to stay in the city a while longer. She approached the throne and curtsied as her parents had instructed her to do when dealing with nobility.
You wished to see us, Lord?

The noble looks around confused as if he can not see the person who spoke to him. Finally his eyes focus on you. "Ah Yes.." He coughs a couple of times. "And who might you be?"

"Ah... Wait... Who..." He pauses for a moment his head sumps down. A beautiful young lady in a blue dress comes out of the shadows. She has blue eyes; black hair that shines in the light, and pale skin. She smiles at you speaking. "You must forgive my husband; he has not been feeling well lately." She pats the lord on the shoulder. "We have heard of trials that your group has been through and wish to request the service of such a brave band of people."

"My Lady flatters us unjustly," Maechus almost blurted out, before continuing with a bit more purpose. "Our trials consisted of finding a proper burial for those we failed to protect, our employer included. If My Lady will pardon our pessimism, whatever you desire must be of dire import if you call for us by name." He lifted his head to stare her in the face. "Not that I cast aspersions on My Lady or My Liege. I, personally, would graciously accept a chance to redeem myself were you to offer."

Kona glares at Tysalat, not appreciating his joke. Her expression softens somewhat at Maechus's speech. Clearly she would need to do something about his view on the group's actions, but this was likely not the correct venue to do so. Kona remained quiet, waiting for the Lady's response.

The women smiles a little bit. "Oh yes I'm quite sure your just the people for this job. Surely people that are able to brave the wilds and complete a shipment after all hands are lost would be able to do this." She smiles more. Caelain dips into a slight bow before addressing the lady.
Lady, with all the respect accorded to one of the lord's status, I have certain dealings which remain to be seen to in the city, and although I cannot speak for my companions, I imagine that they are also unable to afford an extended interlude in their customary business. The task of delivering this message is undoubtedly important, and I wish no slight to the lord, but the fact remains that, unlike the lord, I have yet to make my fortune in the world, and any lapse in attending to particular matters could be ruinous to me. I am certain that one of the lord's wisdom will understand, then, why I must request recompense for the time lost while embarked upon this mission, that I might continue to offer my services in the future, rather than unable to offer my aid to anyone whilst begging in the slums. I apologize for my directness, but I believe it necessary, especially since we never received our payment for ensuring the arrival of gentleman Vaul's shipment.

Kona was somewhat disappointed that she hadn't had an opening to ask about her home town, but still glad to at least be making progress.
Now seems good. And for what it's worth we weren't entirely shortchanged.
Kona stowed the envelope in her bag and, with a moment's hesitation to fight down her hoarding instinct, retrieved the bag of coins, showing its contents to the others as she made for the lift.
It seems like it would have been rude to count them in front of Galinore, but these were in the same cabinet as the logbook. Probably the pay for this delivery.
