    Default [4E] A City Alone IC I

    A City Alone IC I

    Background
    Spoiler
    Show
In ages past, the devils and demons warred, the denizens of Chaos squabbled and squandered their power, the elemental Primordials retreated as civilization tamed their fanes, the Old Gods slumbered in weakness, and other Powers peered at this world from afar.

    In ages past.

The Lords of Law and the Gods of Good fought amongst themselves and against the Fey, and they grew weak and divided. The powers of evil spied one, great chance to strike; the servants of darkness were gathered and given their orders, and pacts were made that gave all of them new might.

They struck. Many Lords of Law and Gods of Good perished, weakened as they were, and the Fey were forced to withdraw to planes beyond reach. As war raged in the Heavens, the world was rent asunder, great cracks appearing in the earth and then being flooded as dark waters poured forth, mountains shattered and the skies filled with choking ash. Mighty paladins fell as the mortal servants of darkness attacked, cities were wiped from the firmament in an instant, ancient cultures perished in hours. Strongholds were ravaged by demons and refuges thought secure provided no protection from beings outside reality.

The Lords and Gods fought back, but they lost far more than they won. And then they decided on one last gamble, a great scheme to give them time. They poured their effort into the preservation of a single city, a redoubt for all their mortal servants. Those of their followers that remained gathered there, huddling in the bastion of their faith. And then the Lords and Gods used the last of the ancient weapons from their first wars, the ones that made the world. Empowering it with the essence of creation, they broke the very bonds of the Planes. The Last War In Heaven ceased in an instant.

But the war continues in the world. The servants of Law and Good that remain struggle to survive as their city, Great Hope, comes under renewed assault from every manner of evil being. Denizens of the deeps rise up, their fastness disturbed; starving raiders pillage outposts, fiends reach through the cracks of the Planes, and the dead do not die. Great Hope must remain, providing an anchor for the Lords of Law and the Gods of Good, and a seed for the growth of Paradise to come.

You are one of the defenders of this last remnant, and you will rise to glory or perish in the hope of life everlasting.

    Races
    Spoiler
    Show

Humans - Though the race as a whole suffered overwhelming losses on the front lines of the Last War, survivors of every human culture reside in Great Hope. Adaptable and resilient, they are the lifeblood of the city, working in every trade and serving in every unit.
Deva - Great heroes that fall in the service of the Lords of Law are brought back as Deva. They are few in number, and almost all of them serve as champions or advisers.
Dragonborn - Mortal followers transformed in the service of the Gods of Good, Dragonborn are doughty warriors and charismatic leaders. Many ships have Dragonborn captains.
Eladrin - The few Eladrin that survived the first battles of the Last War are perhaps the most powerful beings to dwell in Great Hope. Revitalized by these dire straits, the Eladrin feel the call of battle stirring their blood once more. Young Eladrin venture forth to serve alongside the other races while the old Eladrin protect the city with wisdom and arcane might.
Elves - Weathering the cataclysm better than their Eladrin cousins, the Elves have set aside their peaceful ways. Their craftsmen arm whole battalions with finest panoply, and Elven warriors exact horrific vengeance on the monsters that drove them from their homes.
Gnolls - With an uncanny talent for hanging on, many Gnolls abandoned their evil masters and sought refuge in Great Hope. Despite their dark past, few can deny that Gnolls make excellent soldiers in the fight for survival.
Goliaths - These sons of the mountain fared far better than the Dwarves, and their petty kingdoms are some of the farthest outposts of the city. Traveling Goliaths are a common sight, keeping up the bonds of kinship between their species scattered enclaves.
Half-Orcs - Tarak Godhand, the greatest paladin ever to live and founder of Great Hope, was a Half-Orc. His kin carry on his legacy in council chamber, temple and battlefield.
Half-Elves - Few outdo Half-Elves when panache and daring are called for. An increasingly common sight, they tend to pick one area and master it - Magic, swordplay, sailing, every skill has a Half-Elf pushing its boundaries.
Mul - Heirs of the Dwarves, Mul are incredibly tough and strong-minded. Dedicated to driving back the forces of evil and chaos, they hope to rediscover the halls of their ancestors and claim their birthright.
Kenku - Once scorned and relegated to lives of crime and drudgery, Kenku have flown to wondrous new heights. Valued as excellent sailors and scouts, some Kenku are even being trained in the ways of the arcane.
Hobgoblins - Disciplined and militaristic, the Hobgoblin tribes that chose to escape annihilation make some of the finest marines in the fleet, though some of the other survivors are uncomfortable allying with old foes.
Minotaurs - Uncomfortable in the city and aboard ship, the Minotaur survivors defend the small expanse of land around Great Hope and the small islands that ship food back. When they do venture out, their strength and fury is greatly appreciated by their allies.
Thri-Kreen - The loss of one Thri-kreen means nothing. The survival of the species is paramount. Thri-kreen fighters swell the ranks of the military, resolved to protect the last refuge of their queens at any cost.
Warforged - Though the foundries that once churned out legions of manufactured warriors are lost, the Warforged that remain fight valorously in defense of this last bastion of their makers.
Wilden - A race newly-made by the Fey, Wilden are sent into the world to preserve what little beauty remains and reclaim what they can while their creators battle alongside their godly allies in the heavens.

    The Stormcrows

    Spoiler
    Show

Great Hope has many powerful military units. Hobgoblin marines, human knights, gnoll packs, Orders Militant, circles of warmages, goliath clans and more. You are all members of a somewhat more informal unit; small, flexible, and able to handle unorthodox problems. Nicknamed the Stormcrows, you go wherever trouble might be to handle it before it troubles Great Hope itself. Your team is one of many, and sometimes you may work with other Stormcrows or other units of Great Hope.

Stormcrows have heavy black cloaks with silver lightning bolt broaches. Little other gear is provided beyond the bare essentials - most Stormcrows prefer to choose their own equipment.

To become a Stormcrow, one is nominated by a current Stormcrow. After a series of tests, the nomination must be approved by three other ranking Stormcrows. If approved, the prospective member is sent to another Stormcrow team for a year, where they will be watched and guided for a year. When the year is up, the Stormcrow leader they served under makes a recommendation for full membership in the unit or for the prospective recruit to move on. Stormcrow recruitment has been badly disrupted by the events of the past several years, but you have all become full members lately and are now a team.

You have just finished clearing out a troublesome nest of harpies that were harassing some of the minotaur farms on an outlying island about a fortnight from Great Hope and are now sailing back to the city.

The early morning sun shines down on the waves. A stiff breeze sends the ship you boarded last night, the Swiftwing, skimming over the waves almost as fast as the small clouds scudding across the sky. Your squad enjoys the fresh air and sun after several weeks of hunting harpies through swamps and caves. As you all wander the main deck the Deva captain you saw yesterday descends from the helm, calling a greeting.

"Captain Kriv and the Stormcrows. Enjoying the sun? I'm Tyrian, captain of the Swiftwing. Normally I meet everyone coming aboard, but in the rush last night I couldn't do more than glance at you. We're not taking the straight route back to Great Hope, I'm afraid. Have to go to a small island to the northeast to get wood for masts, then we're going straight back."

He is tall and lithe, and you can tell by his balance and demeanor that he is a pleasant being but a veteran sailor and warrior.

On the foredeck a contingent of hobgoblin and human marines practice under the eye of their Half-orc leader. On the main deck with you, several humans that appear to be tradesmen relax, though one of them seems a bit green. Sailors are moving around trimming the sails as the Swiftwing turns to tack. The Thri-kreen helmsman chitters at a Half-Elf leaning on the taffrail, who laughs raucously.

    Spoiler
    Show

Deva are reincarnated servants of the Lords of Law. Those of you that wish to know more about Tyrian or the Swiftwing can roll history, or talk to him. You can also go and talk to the other groups of beings aboard, or find something else to do.

    Hakka
    Spoiler
    Show

Thri-Kreen can communicate with each other telepathically, and while they do not have a full blown hive mind they can pick up on and be influenced by the moods of other Thri-Kreen. Queens give off pheromones that have an overpowering influence. When Thri-Kreen are experiencing a strong emotion, they transmit more powerfully, including whole images - essentially a snapshot of a memory, something they see, etc. Groups of Thri-Kreen in combat have been known to use this to their advantage. This has also lead to the Thri-Kreen custom of the "Death Image" where a dying Thri-Kreen transmits some meaningful image to other Thri-Kreen nearby. It is considered extremely impolite to question another about what their death image might be.

    Kriv - [Swiftwing]

"Not a problem mate, not a problem. We're just enjoying a bit of respite from the muck - you know how it is." Kriv clasps the man's hand and tips his hat in respect, offering a wide grin in response. The dragonborn radiated confidence, and it was hard not to get swept up in it at times.

He looks across the deck, happy to once again feel the gentle roll of the waves under his feet, then turns toward what's left of his crew. An elite fighting unit, a ragtag group, a loathsome bit of troublemakers, a bunch of genuine saviors. He'd still not gotten used to that last bit - people needed help in this world, and at times he still had trouble coming to grips with that.

But, he'd served his time, repaid his Debt, and by Kord he was going to inspire these boys if it killed him.

"Have you met the rest of the boys yet?" Kriv asks Tyrian, indicating the rest of the Stormcrows.

Draj glanced around the barren sea distastefully. "Do you expect to need our escort on your tree hunting expedition, Captian Tyrian? If not, there are several matters I would prefer to discuss with the Mage College immediately, such that I would really rather to Gate home. Perhaps we can pick up some supplies for you and your crew?" The gnoll ritualist added the last in a hopeful tone- the long waits sea voyages required were oppressive to him, and he had finished his latest round of reading the night before.

    Hakka the Hunting Spider

The thri-kreen hunter stays by Kriv's side, as if he was expecting to be some sort of bodyguard. He looks around and notices the thri-kreen kin, and suddenly his sense of clutch protection made him want to collaborate somehow.

"Name Hakka," he says to Tyrian in a guthural, clicking Common. "One can watch from above."

If allowed, he will climb to the watch post (or the highest spot) and help watching the horizon. If not, he will stay on deck.

    Sathris

The avian turns from his view of the sparkling water to face the speaker, inclining his head toward the man in an affirmative nod. "The sun is welcome Captain Tyrian, but I most enjoy the air. The dank lairs of harpies do me no good at all, and I am pleased to be gone from them. Pleased enough to not mind your detour, though our return is overdue. Is there any help I can offer in the meantime? I am not used to being a mere passenger."

Even now, years after being recruited, Sathris found the constant sea of new faces and strange people slightly discomfiting. Those he worked with, fought beside, they were like a second flock and he'd draw blade in defense of any of them, but he still maintained an instinctive suspicion of others, like the Swiftwing's captain, despite their allegiance to the same cause.

"No, but the minotaurs said you did good work fighting those harpies. I'm afraid we do need you with us for the journey - we're going to drop you and those craftsmen behind you off on the island, take supplies to an island a day away, and then return for you all and the mast timbers."

The captain nods as Hakka asks if he can go aloft, then turns to Sathris and says, "We're hoping for a quiet voyage for once. Well, the marines probably aren't. But for now enjoy the sun and relax."

After Unit DEN speaks up Tyrian looks at him curiously, trying to work out what DEN was built for, then answers him. "Only thing for now is accompanying the craftsmen. Not really a Stormcrow mission, but you lot are who's on hand. Could always get another sending, I suppose, but you know how unreliable sendings and portals and such are these days."

Unit DEN, apparently satisfied by this answer, looks over the marines. They seem competent enough, though the Half-Orc leading them is clearly displeased about something.

As the group disperses, Tyrian says to Kriv "Conditions are better than expected. We might make it to our next stop by tomorrow morning. Talk to the craftsmen and make sure everything is ready to go by first light."

    Kriv - [Swiftwing]

Nodding to Captain Tyrian, Kriv thanks the man once again before turning to Hakka. He gives the Kreen a familiar hand gesture, meaning Observe and Report among the Stormcrows, and nods upward toward the aptly named crow's nest.

Strolling easily across the deck, the dragonborn approaches the lumberjacks. "While I'm sure the lot of you are more comfortable on dry land, the service you provide to this ship and to Great Hope is immeasurable. Without masts, we would have lost this war a long time ago." he says, doing his best to reassure the uneasy men. He clasps his hand on the tradesman who looks a bit seasick, and pulls a small piece of something from inside his jacket. "Chew on this boy - bit of kelp. I say if your stomach is churning like the sea, best to eat a bit of the sea to calm it down." He pats the man once on the back, then turns to the others.

"Anything you lot need us to help with before morning? Captain Tyrian here wants you lot to be ready to go as soon as we make landfall. The sooner we're on and off that island, the better."

His insectoid eyes always fixed on the horizon, but the rest of his senses were focused on his surroundings, including the ocassional telepathic communication made by his thri-kreen kin.

He decides to accept captain Kriv's suggestion and enjoy the moment, feeling the wind on his chitinous plates and the ocasional taste of brine in his mandibles.

Kriv notices that Viktor had kept quiet this entire time, not entirely unusual for the stoic northerner, but he worried that the man became too detached at times.

"Viktor, do you still feel the pull of Kord, out here on the calm sea? I must admit that my own connection to our Father has waned these past years, only becoming strong during the raging storm. How is it to you, now that you have had a chance to take a breath and reconnect?"

The head of the craftsmen eyes Kriv sardonically, but apparently decides to humor the dragonborn. "Ain't much we're needin' for now, save more beer. And mayhap another boat, but I doubt you've got one under yer cloak." The rest of the craftsmen chuckle at this witticism. "We'll only have one o' the ship's, and gettin' the logs back is always a pain with just the one. Hopin' we can find a spot where the Swiftwing can come in close."

As the foreman chats with Kriv a bit more, several of the other craftsmen take Sathris up on his offer.

The seasick craftsman appears slightly less green after a few minutes.

DEN evolves a contingency plan that would end badly for MANGO, MIMSY, and MUFFIN. Satisfaction, or something resembling it, courses through his damaged emotional control node. After Kriv addresses him, he rambles on for a while - one of the craftsmen listens curiously for a few minutes, then wanders off.

Tyrian thanks Draj for his offer, but declines magical assistance at present. The gnoll goes down to the cabin he'll be sharing with Kriv, Hakka, and Viktor with an eye to setting up a series of wards, but the cramped conditions will force him to make his circles somewhat smaller than he'd like, and the others might somehow disturb them...he goes in search of a better place to lay his wards. After a while one of the crew directs him to a section of hold only partly full, and amidst the boxes and sacks he gets to work.

Make your checks for each circle. Practically speaking you have a sufficiently high mod that unless you roll a 1 it's unlikely you'll be bothered by anything you could survive fighting anyways, but still.

Hakka joins the kenku watchman in the crow's nest. He sees little of note - a pair of small military ships in the distance, a pod of whales, a particularly large patch of seaweed. Nevertheless, he enjoys the wind lightly moving his antenna and the opportunity to speak with another Thri-Kreen.

    ---------

The day wears on as Stormcrows and crew do various things. The marines on the foredeck have apparently satisfied the stringent demands of their captain and are taking a break, and one of the ships boys comes around and tells each of you that the afternoon meal will be served in an hour or two. The clouds are thickening, and the waves are getting slightly choppier as the wind picks up.

    Sathris

Sathris settles down on the deck to gamble with the craftsmen. Several times when a round seems to be going badly he's tempted to use sleight of hand to change his rolls, but each time he decides not to risk making enemies at sea with nowhere to go, or when he's representing his team. A few games in, the ship boy arrives and announces the impending meal, after which Sathris announces that he'll play one more game and then head down into the ship to eat with his friends.

    Viktor

Viktor had lost his loud, proud demeanor since the fall of his homeland. Once, he had been a loud warrior, boosting in battle with each swing. His armor glistened in the sun, and his blade bit deep and hard. He was sung about in his homeland as a hero. He had fought trolls, raiders, and even a giant. His strength was the pride of his people, and his bravery (or foolishness) had won him many battles.

Lately, Viktor had been seized by a depressing mood, overcome with the thoughts of his missing wife and twins. His features were more gaunt than they had been before, and his reddish beard had started to turn grey. When he fought, his blade did not bite, but it crushed. Anger had replaced the joy battle brought him.

Caught up in thoughts known only to himself and Kord, Viktor turned to Kriv. "I'm sorry, brother. I just.....am not in a mood to talk." Viktor slung his large blade, almost too large a blade, over his shoulder as he turned away. He wore his armor differently than he had when he first arrived. He had removed the white fox fur from his shoulders, and his large cloak was also left behind. His undershirt had been replaced with a much lighter silk shirt that lacked any sleeves, revealing his tightly muscled arms.

"My faith remains strong brother, even if I have to struggle to hear the call of thunder. It seems our god expects more from us now than he has in the past."

The Stormcrows, excepting one, eat together with Tyrian and the other ship's officers. "You lot should do anything else you've a need of this afternoon, and then get an early night. You'll be going over the side before first light. I'm sending one of the marines, Grigor, and some sailors with you to help all you land-folk with the boat. You'll still have to do some rowing, of course!"

On deck, Unit DEN observes a few birds wheeling overhead, heading for land, and the tops of the waves beginning to feather in the wind.

After the meal, Tyrian introduces Grigor, the half-elf seen near the stern in the morning. "One of the marine lieutenants. Good fellow, likes a joke." Tyrian leaves you with Grigor and goes off to attend to other tasks.

"You lot better get squared away before evening. The storm might turn your stomachs faster than the food if you're on deck when it hits." In the background you hear a faint "I heard that!" and Grigor looks slightly sheepish for a brief moment. "Shouldn't be too bad, and of course you Stormcrows see a fair bit of sail, but better snug in your hammock than not, I say!"

As the group disperses, one of the sailors approaches Viktor. "Ain't you Viktor Reikholf? Sailed on the ship out of Nordaros with you to Great Hope. Told all me mates about you, and smashin' those zombies, I did. Word to the wise, sir, might be wantin' that Stormcrow cloak back on if you'll be up for long. Rain'll be lashing Swiftwing soon."

    Hakka the Hunting Spider

The thri-kreen hunter uses his mandibles and multiple arms to gladly devour his ration of food as he hears the conversation between Tyrian, Grigor and the members of the clutch.

Once he's done, he rises from his seat, nodding in thankfulness as he leaves the chamber to climb the mast again and resume his watching duty.

Finished with the meal and the introduction, Sathris quietly gets up and leaves the dining area.
