True. Though, heavens forbid you used the combined lenses to look at one of the SMEN candles. I can't think of anything more foolish to do in Fallen London.

Arguably, the fact you are Seeking Mr. Eaten's Name in the first place is more foolish.

The Tale of the Fidgeting Writer, it is a bunch of matter of luck challenges starting with a Tale of Terror (inventory tab), where you can always abandon the story for an ever-increasing reward, or continue till the end in the hopes of something even better. I believe the Black Lens is a higher end reward from it. The Nephrite Glass is an exotica (like the counterfeit heads of saint John and giggling mandrakes).

There's a few other uses for them. The only one I remember right now is becoming an author, which requires a high-quality story.

Well, it took ages for that d__n letter to show up, but finally, I am now a correspondent. Of course, those ingrates who called themselves my "Appreciation Society" fled in droves once I turned my talent to serious matters instead of idle prose and poetry, but then, what do they know. I have proven the inconsistency of neathly gravity. What, compared to that, is a mere piece of fiction.

Aye. In other news, I now have every rose companion with a cost of 10 or less, but 19 leftover gifts of scorn and 12 masquing.

Oh well. Perhaps there will be another use for it at some point.

Getting to know the Captivating Princess was an excellent use of my Masquing.

She showed up on a rarer instance of the Feast of Roses card - you have to attend the Duchess's Ball. You get an Acquainted with the Captivating Princess and a Dreadful Surmise.

Darn! I wish I'd done that.

EDIT: Varen_Tal, I just got your letter (haven't logged on since a few days back). I tried the tutoring, but it says you're past 100, probably because of gear. (It seems that tutoring doesn't care about your base stat, just your modified stat.) This also means that, if you have stat-subtracting pets et al, you can train for longer.

It's not terribly difficult to grind 15 Masquing - every FotR card can get you 1-2 Masquing if you choose correctly.

You know, I'm not sure how having a really loud hat, a fairly shoddy rifle, and a mandrake of questionable obedience makes me better at shroom-hopping, but I'm just gonna roll with it.

    Think of it like this:

If there were a gentleperson shroom-hopping past you with a loud hat, a questionably obedient mandrake, and a shoddy rifle like that, wouldn't you think twice before trying to steal back the lead from them?

Beyond exchanging gifts, you can spam dancing at the celebrations in the carnival; that gives Masquing on a rare success.

I prefer The Wheel of Affection. On a failure: A Gift of Scorn (20 p or 1 Masquing, up to 5), small loss in Persuasive; on a success: 10 Romantic Notions, increase in Persuasive; on a rare success: 1 Memory of Light, 1 Antique Mystery, 1 Masquing.

Yeah, but a 19% success rate for me means I'll spend most of my time reducing the resulting scandal.
If you have stats for it, sure.
