Crafting questions
I'm trying to make a crafting sorcerer/eldritch knight and I have a few questions
1. Is there any point of getting a craft skill higher than 20? (In my case, craft weapon/armor 14 + 2(int modifier) +4(greater heroism) for a total of 20.)
2. Can you create masterwork weapons/armor with the fabricate spell? (3 months to make 1 masterwork weapon is ridiculous)
3. Can you use planar binding to call in a creature and pay it to cast a spell for you during crafting? If so, what are some viable creatures? (Mainly lightning bolt, ice storm, demand, modify memory, and Keen Edge)
4. What are some ways of setting up a workshop in the middle of nowhere? Use planar binding to get a creature to set it up for you? Use spells like fabricate or stone shape? How about Mage’s Magnificent Mansion?
5. What are some ways of getting materials in the middle of nowhere?
6. What are some ways of getting golem manuals other than wish, and what is the cost of creation of a golem manual?Last edited by RoboEmperor; 2014-04-01 at 06:39 PM.

Re: Crafting questions
1. To reduce the time it takes to craft items.
2. Yes
3a. Yes, if they agree.
3b. Efreeti, they have wish.
4. I hear Lyres of Building can be good for that.
5. Spell traps of true creation. Note this requires a warlock, divine caster (if they aren't a cleric with the creation domain, a creation domain staff will work) or artificer (All easy to do with leadership)
Alternative, Gate/Bind more Efreeti
6a. Artificer, level 12 Warlock, or more Efreeti.
6b. Here is the pricing guide.Last edited by Doc_Maynot; 2014-04-01 at 11:35 PM.

Re: Crafting questions
To better answer question 1, you can add an arbitrary number of +10s to the DC of whatever you're crafting. So someone trying to craft a masterwork component with a +20 to Craft (weaponsmithing) would increase the DC by 10 to DC 30, Taking 10, he would make 90 gold of progress a week, requiring 3.33 weeks of work. Meanwhile, someone with a +40 to Craft (weaponsmithing) (likely with hired craftsmen making Aid Another checks) would take 10 on a DC 50, make 250 gold of progress a week, and complete it in 1.2 weeks.

Re: Crafting questions
Depending on how well you roll, making daily checks, rather than weekly, might speed up the crafting process too. You roll for your check result in copper, rather than silver, but if you're rolling well enough, you might shave a day or two off of the total time.

Spoiler: The False Nose of Vecna.
Make a disguise check every time you encounter someone new.
If the d20 roll results in a 13 (without modifiers) that person automatically assumes you are Vecna in a very poor disguise, and cannot be convinced otherwise, short of a wish spell.

Re: Crafting questions
If you're in Faerun, with its tendays, that's fine, but any other setting that's almost certainly a bad idea, since you make progress at 70% of the rate. Since every +10 to the DC cuts the time down, it's not really worth it except maybe in a few weird corner cases.
That reminds me, there's something fishy about Craft's double/triple DC rule: if you complete the whole item in one week or one day with a total value of double or more, then you finished in half the time, and similarly for other multiples. But what happens if you finish most of it one week, and then make triple the rest in the next — do you finish in one and one-third of a week total? It seems like you should, but I don't think the rules let you do that.Projects: Homebrew, Gentlemen's Agreement, DMPCs, Forbidden Knowledge safety, and Top Ten Worst. Also, Quotes and RACSD are good.
