It's high summer and the beating sun has no intention of letting you forget it. You are two weeks out of Absolom, taking a circuitous route to avoid the growing border tensions, Cheliax and Andoran at the brink of yet another war, the puppet-state Isger caught between their infernal masters and Andoran muskets. Moods grow muted as you pass, inns quiet and passer moving quickly, the impending conflict hanging over their heads, even the usual pre-war loudmouths curiously quiet, everyone near the border concerned. Rumors run rampant, goblins in the hills, mercenaries from Druma, armies of ghosts.

But you press on. A passing farmer gives fair directions to Drellin's Ferry, the town closest to your destination, Vraath Keep. Or what's left of it. The Society has an interest in such places, as well as pulling truth from rumor. A renewed goblin army certainly warrants investigation, though such rumors often amount to little, nervous farmers with memories of the goblinblood wars encountering scavengers, then the tales growing with too much ale around bored company.

It is hot and has been here for several weeks; rain scarce. The grass on either side of the road is more brown than green, crunching underfoot. The trees and the scrub sheltering beneath them fair better, still green despite the beginnings of drought. The road is cut down into a low hill, dusty banks rising slightly on either side. The ruins of a small building lie ahead on the right. Each step kicks up a small cloud of dust, the cloud lingering in the absence of any breeze.

    Elymas

"If there is a rule to this party, it is this. Always stay behind Heidrek."

thinks Elymas to himself, for the umpteenth time. Or mostly to himself, because you never knew with Auvin.

This is a rule that is golden in a variety of situations. Combat? Heidrek was your man. Rain and wind? Heidrek provided better cover for the diminutive halfling than most tents. And today, with the sun, staying close to Heidrek was providing a nice shade from the glare. Not that the heat or the old ever made a difference to Elymas. Few things really did. As an added bonus, Heidrek seemed to have a soft spot for halflings. A quite giant of a man, Elymas could always persuade Heidrek to help him with physical tasks.

Another rule was silence. Also a bonus. Elymas did not mind idle chatter, but a bit of quiet on the road was nice. And spending time with Pitt on the one hand and Sulevia on the other was like walking among two dangerous hedgehogs. If hedgehogs could inflict arcane misery, that is.

Lucius Elymas knew for some time now. Quiet, coarse, sharp and focused as an elven arrow. A good man to have at your back and one who Elymas loved to compete with in friendly terms. Giving him things to focus on, that was the trick.

"Pitt. Did you see that hare over there? Under that oak? Strange to be out in the heat."

Perception check to notice something interesting but hard to spot on the road. (1d20+16)[18]

Disappointing. Elymas will probably lose the contest.

Sulevia, now that was an enigma. Intimidating woman, scarred, but with the touch of an angel when it came to healing. Elymas had cut himself while cooking the other day, and Sulevia made it just go away. But an impatient woman, and as rough as Pitt. Elymas was a smart man, but even he has earned her ire.

Finally, Auvin. Even smarter than Pitt and at the other extreme of dangerousness. His distracted look was a facade. A mindbreaker and a con-man if there ever was one. Elymas could twist the truth hard enough to make it groan, but Auvin could make it dance all the while. A dangerous companion, but it was a pleasure to see him work. For reasons unknown, Elymas liked him.

Are you listening to my thoughts, now, Auvin? Stay out. Or I will show you what I showed you last time.

Aloud he said, lighting his pipe.

"Are we getting nearer? Who has the map?"

    Sulevia

This umbrella was the best purchase ever. Wait, did she buy it or did she take it from that woman she healed four months ago? The one with gangrene. Odd, Sulevia could distinctly remember the smell of the wound, but she's unable to remember if the woman paid with gold or if Sulevia took her umbrella as payment.
Doesn't matter really, she's glad to have it. Not only good for the rain but surprisingly handy in the sun.

This is the first real job she's been given since she passed the test and was made a full Pathfinder. ,She was assigned to this group travelling to investigate some sort of keep. So far it's been mostly travelling, but that gave her the time to get to know the others.

Elymas seemed to be an idiot in the kitchen, can't even slice a carrot without carving up his finger. He acted like a little baby. It was so irritating Sulevia went up to him and healed his poor little finger. Luckily that shut him up. You'd think a man with his experience could handle a little cut.

The Half-Giant was boring, he hasn't talked to her much yet. He barely even told her his name is Heidrek. Same goes for Lucius, a quiet man as well.

She did like Auvin. However she doesn't know if she really likes him or if he's making her think she likes him. The first few days he seemed friendly, but as soon as she saw him do his little trick on another person she wasn't quite sure on what to think of him.
Was he doing the same thing to her? And did it matter? Is there really a difference between liking somebody and thinking you like somebody?
And can thinking you like somebody lead to actually liking that person?
She's glad for the training the Old Turtle gave her in trying to resist magic. At this point she's relatively sure he's not influencing her.

Suddenly a smell appears in her nostrils. That damned Halflins is smoking his pipe again!
"Are you sure you haven't used the map to light up the chimney that seems to be attached to your face?"

Dammit, shouldn't have said that......Easy there Sulevia, you still need to work with these people. And you're new in the group.
She cracks her fingers. "Sorry. I don't have the map."

    Elysam

Elysam just stares at Sulevia out of the corner of his eyes.

Grumpy. Supposedly, it was the rain she did not like. The sun was not a favorite too, it seems. He does the mental equivalent of a shrug.

    Yes. Pretty sure.

What is that building over there? A remnant of the goblin wars perhaps? Worth taking a look as we pass.

Elysam 's eyes seem to swirl but noone sees them. He has called on his Mark today, as he does every day. He could see, smell, hear the smallest details.

    Pitt

Grrhrrm is the only reply Elysam gets to his comment about the hare. He briefly considers shooting the thing for a quick meal, but he'd always heard halflings were more gristle than savor. Plus, things like that had a way of getting back to the society.

He pulls his hat brim lower, a subtle sign to discourage small talk that Elysam had proven oblivious to over the years. At least the quarterling (as Pitt liked to think of the gaunt halfling) had good eyes. Better than Pitt's, though the man would never admit as much.

Which is why Pitt takes it seriously when Elysam mentions checking out the abandoned house. Looking around, he notes what a nice spot this would be for an ambush. The building for cover, rises on both sides of the road hemming in any riders or carts.

A brown jet of tobacco juice splatters on the dusty road, the usual preamble when Pitt's preparing to speak. "Ayup. Better check it out, El." He abbreviated the quarterling's name, another personal joke. He's not sure if Elysam has caught onto it yet.

Auvin sat cross-legged in the cart, his fingers laced and his eyes staring into the distance, unseeing. His facial expression was placid, but that was never an indicator of his moods or any hint as to his thoughts. For now, his contemplation was turned inwards.

I really should have eaten more at lunch. Between the heat and the nuisance of hunger, it was difficult to concentrate on the book he was "reading". It was in his pack, but he'd impressed a few chapters upon his memory as an exercise in mental self-discipline. Bringing it to mind page by page gave him the opportunity to exercise his focus. The others began talking, and he decided to give it up for now. He could worry about the intricacies of arcane devices another time.

"Hmm? Map? Lienos, would you be so kind?" There was a rustling in his pack and a plump steel spider emerged backwards, carefully pulling out the map, climbing down along his master's arm to deliver it. "Nearer, of course. But let me see…" He looked over the map, checking their surroundings now and then. "Half a day or so," he said, handing over the map to the halfling.

Elymas was an interesting one. Surface thoughts like anybody, but with a whole lot of muttering in the background. Whispers you couldn't make out most of the time and words that didn't mean anything when you could. He didn't go poking about the minds of the others now that he knew them, but it would have been foolish to join a group of strangers without checking. Out of his four traveling companions, Elymas was perhaps the most worrisome. There'd been an arrangement of some sort with something at some point, and that sort of thing always came with a cost. If a person liked you, they didn't kill you as a rule. That was one of the ways you knew. With Elymas, there was the possibility that it wouldn't be him making the call on that. Nevertheless, that sort of caution turned into respect. Elymas was powerful, and sensible enough that he didn't seem likely to call up something he couldn't put down. That sort of respect was a mutual thing. Auvin was sure plenty of the others were just cautious about him, and that was just common sense.

Of course, it was Heidrek that people usually worried about. A veritable mountain of a man with giant blood in him. (How that sort of thing even happened was a topic that Auvin's intense mental discipline allowed him to never think about too closely.) Of course, Heidrek was easily the least dangerous of any of them, slow to anger. To those who earned it, though, he was far from the least dangerous. One didn't carry a sword with a name lightly, nor a sword as nearly as long as a man was tall.

The wizard was probably the one they should be afraid of. He didn't really look that threatening- even less than Auvin himself- but he had the strangest fascination with combining the unholy machinations of Alkenstar with arcane spells of destruction. He seemed to like both a fair sight better than most people, although long-term traveling companions tended to at least be tolerated. It was always a relief to see his infernal device pointed at others, though.

The last of their number, and the most recent addition, Sulevia, was not one to be trifled with. She had more in common with him than any of the others, really. The others were experts at taking a thing that was alive and correcting that minor oversight by the gods so as to not trouble them. Auvin himself would begin inspecting the looser contents of their mind and adjusting where necessary. Sulevia would curse them, stitch their lips shut, and take things from there. The two of them worked together well, with her weakening the mental barriers of somebody while he assaulted their mind, silently coordinating over a telepathic link. Even apart from that, he enjoyed her company and presence on the team.

"Half a day to an inn…" Auvin smiled at the thought. "I have never been a religious man, but at times like these, I regret my lack of devotion. I hear the favored servants of Cayden Cailean can not only call forth cold water from the air, but turn it into beer, wine, and ale."

Heidrek walked beside the cart slowly, he felt it would be needlessly cruel to burden an animal with his considerable amount of bulk. The land was different than when he last gazed upon it even though two decades had passed he still knew where he was. Despite the drought like weather the land looked much healthier than it had during the wars but then again goblin blood probably wasn't the best fertilizer for plants. The heat didn't phase the stoic giant for he was used to the southern heat and he had to endure it under much worse conditions than simply walking in armor.

"You all seem to forget that I am your map, that little piece of paper will not do you much good once you are off of a main road." The booming voice of Heidrek was slow and careful much like the man it came from. The giant stopped walking for a moment to pick up a small sized stone, looking over his shoulder he tossed it at Auvin. "Suck on that it will slake your thirst for a time..." The odd human was like him but at the same time not like him, Auvin's gift seemed stronger but more focused than his own. He recalled the first time the human tried to touch his find, looking back it was mildly amusing but to Auvin well he got quite the surprise when the Giant talked back.

Elysam was an odd being, very much a halfling by his own right but he fancied himself a charmer. He seemed to believe that Heidrek's helpful nature extended solely to him when in reality if anyone asked the big man politely to do something Heidrek usually would do it if he was able. The infernal stench that erupted from the little man's lips made the half giant scowl, it reminded him too much of the world he escaped from but he kept that fact hidden. The little one had keen eyes just as keen as his but the giant smirked at the mention of the hare. He had seen it a couple of minutes previous.

The sole lady of the group was puzzling, Heidrek always felt she was angry with him for some unknown reason. So he thought it best to leave her be and not make conversation lest he increase her angry disposition. Still he tried to be pleasant without speaking, helping silently with her chores even though he hadn't been asked.

Finally there was Pitt, an enigma wrapped inside a miserable husk, Heidrek believe the dour man wasn't hugged enough as a child. Though his contraption was some what interesting but good luck asking about it.

    Sulevia

Sulevia smiled. Heinrek just threw a rock the size of a walnut at Auvin and told him to suck on it. The giant man didn't even seem to notice that the rock was too big for a human. Maybe he could fit it in his mouth but that's about it.
She takes her mask off and tries to use it as a fan, maybe that will cool her down a bit. Her ioun stone starts floating a little closer to her face. Luckily she was smart enough to carve her scars in such a way that the sweat that drips down her face flows to the side and not into her eyes.

Pitt is chewing his Tobacco again. He and his spitting and Elymas and his smoking are a constant nuisance. Why couldn't they do something more pleasant? Chew on mint leaves perhaps, that would smell a lot better. Or rhubarb sticks.
If only Pitt bought a spittoon....

She snaps her neck one more time and puts her mask back on. It's hard to do that with the mask. Her ioun stone starts floating a bit further away from her face again. Strange, it's a stone but sometimes it feels like it's afraid of the mask.
"If we go to the house, i'm walking downwind of Elymas."

That ambush is passably well set. Is all that Pitt can think about as the first of the incendiaries arched high and crashed down into the cart beside him. Better execution than one could usually expect from a pack of goblins, and better arms, as well. The twisted little wretches loved fire and explosions, it was well known, but muskets and grenades were usually a bit beyond them. Quite a bit. They've got a smart one leading. Probably not a gobbo.

But now wasn't really the time for speculation. It took most of one's attention to roll over the sidewall of a burning wagon without winding up under the wheels, let alone do so while suffocating the scattered flames on one's person and unshouldering a long gun.

By the end of the maneuver he's standing beside the flaming cart, weapon drawn and pointed at the nearest of the targets. "Surprise," he growls in passable goblin, and fingers the trigger as he rushes through an incantation. It's not a bullet that flies out the muzzle of the rifle, but a jagged, white-hot bolt of arcane energy. 5ft step out of the wagon, move action to draw, standard to cast Shocking Grasp w/ Reach through arcane gun at the goblin sapper 10' to Pitt's right.

The first thing that Elymas notices is the fire. He is immediately set with terrible rage. At himself.

"You call yourself a battle scout? Ambushed -successfully!-by goblins.

And walking around unknown land with your defenses down! Stupid."

The next second, Elymas is rolling of the wagon, patting down flames, and settling in the dust of the road. His eyes suddenly twirl and change color and a pure Chaos comes at his command.

Years of diving away from a woman swinging a piece of wood at her head finally become usefull. As soon as shots start firing and bombs start flying Sulevia jumps out of the wagon. Not fast enough to avoid getting a little singed, but it could have been a lot worse.
She uses the momenum of her dive to keep rolling a few more feet to make sure she ends up next to Heidrek. She thought it would be safe there, but it seems like the giant has taken the brunt of the attack. Better start doing what she's been hired to do. Auvin Ress
Some background awareness of something amiss alerted Auvin to the ambush with just enough time to throw himself out of the way of the worst of the blast. He leapt out of the cart, moving in front of Sulevia and counting on Heidrek to keep anybody from getting too close. A bolt of lightning fired from his hand at the nearest goblin.

    ROUND 2

The goblin answer's the giant's swing with a little toss. Heidrek's attempt to parry is too slow and they are both engulfed in flame, though the goblin shield himself from the worst of it. The explosion extends all the way to Pitt.

    Elymas

The sight of Heidrek burning is a slap in the face, but Elymas knows he can do nothing about it. Normally, he would continue summoning protective forces, but there was no time. They must begin retaliating, and soon.

    "Seluvia. Help him."

With that, Elymas turns to the nearest musket wielder. He looks at him, his eyes like rolling mists and then he utters a terrible phrase, a non-phrase. The powers of Chaos roll through him and suddenly the forces that hold the musket together shatter in an explosive way.

Auvin was glad of the more obvious target Elymas was presenting. He hurried across, throwing himself between the other two gun-wielding goblins and Heidrek. He reached out with his mind, seizing the firearms and several large branches and rocks, attempting to hurl the guns away and fling the heavy objects at the alchemist.

    Sulevia

"Dammit man it's Sulevia, not Seluvia!" She yells at the Halfling. As soon as the words leave her mouth, she realises her priorities are all wrong. She quickly runs over to Heidrek. That pipe-smoking maniac told her to help him, wich is a lot harder than it looks. He's on fire and he's bleeding to death from several other wounds. Two problems.
Solve one problem first, then deal with the other.

She touches him on a part of his body that isn't burning, again healing his wounds, or at least part of them.
Once that's done she either starts slapping him with her umbrella to try and put out the flames or she drops on top of him for the same reason. It all depends on how much he's burning.
They better start remembering her name after all this crap.....

    Spoiler: Actions

Convert Web to Cure Moderate Wounds, healing Heidrek for (2d8+5)[11]
After that either start slapping Heidrek with the umbrella to put out the flames or drop on top of him for the same reason.
I don't know what kind of action slapping him is and if i can still squeeze that action into this round. If i can still do that this round, i'd prefer slapping him with the umbralla since Sulevia wouldn't have to stand up next round.
Otherwise i'll use a free action to drop on top of Heidrek
Whatever action is allowed, Morbis should get +4 on his roll to put out the fire.

Slapping a Half-Giant with an umbrella would be a nice way of saving his life

    Pitt

Some words best not repeated stream from Pitt's mouth--along, most regrettably, with his plug of tobacco--as he's again splashed with flaming liquid.

While retreating a step away from his downed, burning ally, Pitt fishes a pinch of mica dust from his belt pouch. He picks out the isolated pair of goblin musketeers and flings the sparkling powder, which a few words of power transform into a cloud of blinding motes that cling to the ambushers and all the vegetation around them, outlining their forms and bathing them in glare.

    "More incoming!"
He bellows, not bothering to more nuanced translation of the goblins' grunting, squealing excuse for a tongue.

(Apologies to MM, but I won't have time to do a battle post tonight so would like to get it in now. Since Heidrek needs to spend a move to stand, leaving only a standard and a swift this round you are unlikely to change the battlefield in a way that will present a serious issue. I'll tweak things to adjust to your actions once posted. You can take both your turns when you get a chance)

    MONSTER RND 3:
The goblin dances around the fallen Heidrek, laughing it's bulbous head off. Right up until a heavy log soars through the air, slamming into the goblin and sending it hurtling into the remains of the burning wagon. The is a boom and a fireball as the volatile and improperly stored reagents on its body catch fire, raining bits of toasted flesh all over the area.

The two hobgoblins north of the road watch helplessly as their muskets sail out of their hands and up the road. The southern two immediately set to rubbing the shining dust from their eyes, though one looks shocked as his gun explodes.

Another figure, this one clad in black chain, appears around the bend from the direction of the house, a hobgoblin bearing a scimitar. Or, more accurately, six hobgoblins, shifting in and out of one another. As he shouts an order, the others immediately begin withdrawing into the path, drawing blades as they go, save the one who still has his gun. He takes a shot at Auvin, giving him a bloody gash.

The air is then pierced by a terrible roar. A winged shape rises from the forest, gaining altitude as it rises. This green-scaled dragon has two powerful legs and a pair of long, leathery wings. A long spike adorns its thrashing tail.

Fantastic. This was just what they needed right now. A caster and a flying reptile. Auvin had taken too many shots, and needed to get back. Now, to make sure he wasn't pursued, and possibly finish off the hobgoblins in the process… he reached out, summoning a tremendous amount of telekinetic energy to trap the hobgoblins in rubble. Stones and loose branches flew out from the forest, piling on any of the hobgoblins too slow to get out of the way. With that taken care of, he started scrambling up the slope and into the forest.

    Elymas
HP 22 AC 17 Enthropic Shield active

Elymas calmly surveys the scene, which, against all probability, gets worse. He lets a small sigh, and makes some quick calculations.

The witch and the giant can probably take the incoming enemy. Pitt can help with the rumble on the ground. Taking to the air, as was his intention, is a bad idea, now that an extremely well fed drake appeared.

    So, the drake it is.

Elymas dives deep inside him, muttering as his hands seem to pull threads of amorphous energy from thin air. The ball pulses and changes colors constantly.

Then with a push, Elymas sends the shifting ball towards the approaching drake. He cannot see if it hits, but when the ball arrives near the drake, it suddenly explodes in miasmatic gases and clinging goo.

If that hit and if Heidrek gets on his feet, things could still work out.

(I'm going on the assumption Heidrek has 25 temporary hitpoints, like Morbis said)

    Sulevia

A caster and a bloody dragon. Heidrek almost died . Auvin ran into the Woods. The two tobacco-loving men are still fighting.
This is a pretty well done ambush. They've got the terrain advantage, the element of surprise and good firepower. And they're smart enough to keep powerfull reserves.
    Pretty impressive.

That caster would have been her priority now that Heidrek is no longer burning or dying, but he's still too far away. Too bad, she had a really nice spell ready for him.
Instead she stands up and locks her eyes on the dragon. She gives him a look that would freeze a fire elemental.

    Spoiler: Actions

The giant felt heat, then pain and finally nothing; the world went black and all Heidrek could feel was disappointment that he would die without knowing who he really was. His lung gasped for air as he felt a touch upon his body, without hesitation he batted the flames out before they could inflict further damage. He lived but his wounds were many and his was still dizzy but he focused, slowed his breathing taking his power and forming an invisible shell around himself. He got up from the ground, fury in his eyes as he drew forth more power allowing him to move much more quickly than normal. His target was the largest adversary, the overgrown lizard.
