    Flynn cautiously inches forward, his bow drawn and ready as he looks closely all around. Moving into the courtyard when he sees no enemies, he approaches the well, finding the dead body.

    Given a moment uninterrupted, the bard says some elven words and peers closely at the two potions, his eyes growing slightly darker and grayer from the magic.

    Edit: So, the 18 will identify any potion. If the two are identical, that is easy enough. If different, I failed to determine the second potion's function.

    If these are not potions (elixirs count as Wondrous Items, for example) then the item will list a caster level in its description which can be used to determine a DC. Just FYI.

    "Ok, if I were a mushroom, where would I be...?" Lucas paces around the courtyard a bit, keeping a wary eye on the western door. His search coming up empty handed, he returns to the others. Frowning, "I can't see anything - the grass is too high. But I think we ought to check in there" he points to the southeastern watchtower, "before turning our backs to it."

    "Merek, Lorelei, c'mon. Flynn, you and Lee keep an eye on those doors." Using his spear to push aside the grass, Lucas starts making his way over to the watchtower door. When he reaches it, he performs the usual ritual of inspecting it, listening at it, and carefully testing if it's locked...

    The door leading into the tower is not locked, but is stuck shut. A strength check will be necessary if you want to look inside.

    Lucas goes to open the tower door, and blinks in surprise at finding it stuck. "Huh, it's stuck.." He glances carefully around the courtyard for a moment, deliberating, before turning back to the door. "Ok, Merek - give me a hand. I'm gonna try pulling it open!" Setting his spear aside, he grasps the handle with both hands and starts to heave.

    Pulling accomplishes little, as the door is designed to open inward. Lucas adjusts his effort into a push, and the door pops open with a fairly quiet cracking sound. Dust is kicked up from the agitation, and it becomes apparent quickly that this room has not been used in quite a while.

    As the dust settles, it reveals a small chamber full of ancient barrels and crates, covered in thick webbing. The western wall is dominated by a small, rickety looking staircase to an open trapdoor in the ceiling 30 feet up.

    Lucas jumps backwards and stifles a cough as their entry stirs up clouds of dust. "Mushrooms like damp places, don't they?" he asks out loud while rubbing his eyes. "Not much chance of that here... I guess we'd better check it out anyway, though."

    Sizing up the room, he beckons Merek and Lorelei to enter. "I'll check upstairs. Why don't you see what's in these barrels?" Adjusting his grip around his spear, he advances carefully to the western wall, trying to stir as little extra dust as possible, and considers the staircase before ascending. "I wish Kith was here..." he mutters as he places one foot on the rickety first step.

    Lucas attempts to tumble past the spider, but gets stopped short when it nips his leg (1 damage, DC 14 fortitude save or 1 Str damage). Lucas responds in kind by planting a solid blow against the spider. Lorelei, seeing an opening, sneaks behind Lucas, and neatly skewers the spider's fairy body. It slumps to the floor, dead.

    A thorough search of what remains in the barrels and crates in this room reveal mounds and mounds of deteriorated wood and foodstuffs and a masterwork short sword, neatly wrapped in oilcloth tucked behind one of the barrels. The stairs dominate the southern wall, looking more rickety than ever. You can't see much through the trapdoor above them, but it is open to an enclosed chamber above this one.

    Lucas gives a low whistle of appreciation when the masterwork short sword is uncovered, and gives it a few experimental swipes through the dusty air. "That's as fine a blade as I've ever seen - better even than the merchants' guards usually have. Almost worth getting bitten for!" He scowls again at the spider's corpse.

    "What's it look like, Flynn?" he asks, limping over to join his friend at the foot of the staircase. "Careful - there might be more of them up there..."

    As best you can tell, it is definitely not safe to climb. A few of the planks have rotten through, and the whole frame is a best infrequently attached to the wall, where it used to be secured.

    the poison will trigger every round for up to 4 rounds. Any successful passed save (DC 14 fort) will immediately end the progression, leaving you with only the Str damage you've already taken. I might ask for a heal check to aid on the next save :-P


    After a thorough search, you are all convinced that the mushrooms sought after are not present.

    Leaning his spear against the wall, Lucas finishes tying the rope to the grappling hook and tosses it up to the second story. When it eventually catches, he tests the pull once or twice before rubbing his palms, adjusting the shortspears on his back, and starting to climb...

    Assuming Lucas can get the grappling hook to catch on something solid, I think we're looking at a DC 5 climb check. Lucas will take 10, for a total of 16, to get to the second floor.

    If it's not possible to hook the rope from the inside, try again from the outside of the tower, or just scaling the wall as it is.

    It takes a few throws to get the grappling hook through the trapdoor and snuggly hooked on something above. Afterward, the climb is easy, revealing an observation deck with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. The space on the second floor is dominated by webs and the remains of the spider's prey. Otherwise, the area is empty.
