    "Gross!" Lucas mutters as he knocks away cobwebs and half-eaten bits of small animals. "Hey, there's nothing up here!" he calls down to the others, "Well, except for a pretty great view!"

    Climbing back down, he retrieves his hook and rope and re-coils them while explaining what he saw. "It's just a bunch of cobwebs and animal remains up there. And I didn't see any sign of the mushrooms..." he frowns. "Well, they've gotta be in the western half of the monastery - that's the only place we haven't looked! You guys ready?"

    Flynn mutters, "Hope that view was worth getting bitten by a giant spider..." as he continues to watch the courtyard, his bow trained towards the half of the monastery they haven't explored yet. Speaking loud enough I for all to hear he says, "Dwarven forges are often underground, it seems to me these mushrooms could be underground too. Let's hope the basement isn't too extensive."

    Lucas has no difficulty climbing back down the rope, and the party quickly reassembles in the bottom floor of the shell of a watch tower.

    Lucas scratches the back of his head as the others discuss the likely whereabouts of the mushrooms. "Man, I forgot about basements..." he announces glumly. "Ok, I guess we'd better go check the western side. Anything dangerous is all yours, Flynn!" With a wink at his friend, he waves the group to follow as he makes his way across the courtyard to the western double doors. After listening at them for a moment, he signals his intention to the others and then pushes them open, walking into the next room.

    Rolling her eyes, Lorelei sheathes her weapon, carefully sets down the torch in her other hand and does a short series of stretches that culminate in a graceful pirouette. With a satisfied face, she retrieves the torch and draws her weapon with a flourish before wordlessly Lucas across the courtyard.

    As you press the doors open wider, the entry hall beyond becomes more illuminated. The hall is still dark, and littered with mounds of debris and several years' worth of dead leaves. A narrow path clearly winds through the leaves, with those in the way trampled into the beginnings of a peat bed. About 15 feet down the hall, the walkway "T's" into another set of double doors. A small door hangs on both side walls.

    Seeing no visible threats, Lucas waves Lee over to join and crouches wordlessly above the tracks in the leaves, trying to discern anything he can about what could have made them, and how recently.

    Keeping his eyes peeled, Flynn says quietly, "I don't like all the door - it would be too easy for us to get ambushed going inside from this direction. We should double around to the long hall we saw earlier and check those doors." He glances down at the tracks, before saying, "Whatever made these tracks likely lives here and may not like us visiting. We should be careful."

    Almost all of the tracks lead from the open door into the yard northward into the hallway. All the doors visible from your current vantage point (except the doorway you're standing in) appear firmly closed.

    Lucas nods to Flynn and gestures for the others to back out quietly into the courtyard. When they're all out, he responds to Flynn's point. "Yeah, something doesn't feel right about this place... let's double back to the hallway, like you said." If there are no objections, he then leads them around the way they came and down the long hallway before dropping to and crouch and approaching the last few paces to the double doors as silently as possible.

If you top an 11, you are not surprised, and may act in the "surprise" round. Otherwise, you are surprised when a wolf pushes the door open and attacks Lucas.

    Surprise round

    Merek recognizes the faint sound of footpads striking the stone, and manages to press Lucas forward, in front of the door before it opens inward. The wolf reaches the hallway facing two opponents (one with cover) instead of one. Merek quickly unleashes a flurry of blows before the wolf can react, but misses twice. The wolf lunges at Lucas, who deftly dodges the attack before missing with a spear thrust. Flynn begins chanting to motivate his companions (please include +1 atk/+1 dam from here on in your rolls), and a split second later, an arrow shatters against the doorjamb- fired from Lee. Lorelei could not hear the wolf approaching from her position as rear guard.
