Default Re: Rising Tempest - Deathwatch [IC]

Lokir is the first to open up, his bolter ripping across the field towards the Kroot on the ground closing towards the Colonel. The bolter barks, reminiscent of its wielder and his chapter. The Kroot ducks quickly at the sound, scrambling for cover, and the second shot goes roaring through the space the xenos had occupied only moments before.

Zachariel has little better luck, as his plasma shot sizzles through the air, the kroot hunter nimbly dodging around the superheated energy.

Romeo throws caution to the winds, igniting the jump pack despite the earlier blow. The Machine Spirit of the jump pack protests, but acquiesces to his demands, roaring to live and hurling him high into the sky. A moment later, he smashes down like a thunderbolt, his axe slashing into the arm of one of the kroot hunters on the ramparts before it can even drop its needle rifle and react. The axe sinks into flesh before, with a dull thud, the power field smashes through bone, tearing the kroot's arm clean off. The xeno dies in a spray of gore. Emboldened by his swift kill, Romeo turns and fires his bolt pistol at the nearest Kroot, rapidly closing the distance for a point-blank shot. The bolt round explodes in the Kroot's shoulder, spraying the area with blood and shards of bone.

Zachariel quickly draws his bolt pistol and fires, but the balance is all wrong, the shot too quick, and it smashes into a piece of rockcrete rubble, pulverizing it instantly.

Lokir, meanwhile, draws in a deep breath and fires at Zachariel's target. Time slows as the charge sends the bolt round from his weapon, and the secondary charge ignites, sending the mass-reactive round howling across the field, literally. If Lokir had any doubt that the All-father smiled on his actions, they were put to rest as the bolt round howls like a Fenrisian wolf, taking the Kroot in the forehead, and reducing his head to a spray of red mist. The truncated body falls limply to the floor. Lokir charges across the battlefield, attempting to close the distance to the Colonel, bringing him 30m away from the trapped officer.

Undeterred by the loss of two of their fellows, the Kroot hunters fade back into the shadows, firing at the Space Marines as they move.

As his shot fizzles past the nimble Kroot, Zachariel curses. He'd forgotten that such xenos were often agile. It mattered not, he would just have to increase his rate of fire. The Dark Angel stoically stands his ground as two needle rifles spit in his direction. One whickers past, missing him completely. The second bounces harmlessly off the ancient ceramite plating. Several of the Kroot seem to disappear from his auspex readings, giving him pause for a split-second. Deciding it wasn't worth the attention, he flicks up the fire selector on his plasma gun and sends two crackling bolts of plasma towards the singular Kroot that remained in his vision.

Lokir smiles as his target is vaporized in a shower of blood and gore. It is a well-placed shot and a good kill.

<Splash one upon the red snow. Two spotted upon the ramparts. Heading to the objective.>

With that, Lokir leaps forward in a full sprint, dodging debris and weaving through cover to reach the Colonel. He slides to a halt in front of the Colonel, rapidly swapping his Bolter for his Bolt Pistol in the process. The Fenrisian power sword continues to crackle with icy energy, while his yellow lenses and honed senses scan the battlefield for any close combat threat.

He addresses the Colonel quietly, voice carrying just above the immediate din of the battle--but wary of enemy ears.

"Colonel Ligne--take cover behind me. Keep your head down and we'll keep you safe. If you can grab the cloak off my shoulders, do so--then hunker down and find good concealment."

Romeo sidesteps the Kroot's blade with a notable economy of movement, he allows its edge less than a centimetre of air between it and his armour.

His eyes narrow within his helmet, his vengeful side being given the opportunity to vent itself on the foolish Xenos that dared to attempt to harm his charges. He growls as he attempts to end this one as quickly as possibly, hoping to continue the butchery of the others as soon as possible.

Lokir charges across to find Ligne taking shelter behind a rockcrete wall. "My thanks Lord Astartes. They came out of nowhere." Ligne manages to get out, his voice shaky and weak. You can see a needle round lodged in his leg and his eyes are glassy. He manages to take the cloak and spread it over himself before slumping against the wall. It appears the Colonel will be little able to defend himself. Still, the cover is good here, and Lokir can see the approaching Kroot easier from his position.

Zachariel hisses in frustration as the Kroot effortlessly dodges his plasma bolts. It seemed almost impossible to land a shot, aside from Lokir's bolt round. As he calculates, his augur array growls and flickers with static. A thought clears it, but as the readings stabilise, the Kroot are nowhere to be seen.

He swears an oath that would have earned him a month's penance if one of his own Chapter had heard it and takes off towards the Colonel's position, intending to bunker down with the Wolf of Fenris. After all, if you had someone at your back, nobody could stab you in it.

Romeo's power axe slices into xenos flesh as the Kroot (4) overextends himself. The dull thump of the power field activating echoes across the battlefield as the Kroot's leg blows off, showering the area in gore and xenos blood. The Kroot screams, an alien, bestial sound before dying.

Lokir's fortune is even better as the Kroot (1) running towards him turns to see Zachariel charging towards the colonel, and fails to notice the bolter pointing at him. The first two shots take the Kroot warrior in the leg almost at the same time, blowing it to bloody shreds and sending the xenos warrior crashing to the ground. Seemingly undetered by the injury, the Kroot begins to drag itself towards Lokir inch by inch, until it reaches down to see a mass reactive round embedded in its chest. Time slows as the bolt round activates, blowing a hole clean through the alien's chest and leaving only ruins of flesh and bone.

Romeo can almost smell the blood of the enemy, even with his helm's environmental seal. It is entirely imaginary, a psychological issue with the gene-seed of the Angels Encarmine.

It focuses him, though, and he locks his pistol to his belt. There would be no needing it.

Romeo's bloodlust makes the world narrow to a single point. His power axe bites into the Kroot's chest with savage fury releasing a deluge of Xenos blood, which glitters in the harsh sun of Spite like gemstones. Intoxicating. Romeo barely even notices the Xenos corpse fall to the ground, evicerated.

Lokir and Zachariel team up on another, Lokir's sword strike distracting the Kroot, and while the nimble beast avoids the killing stroke, it is ill-equipped to dodge the servo arm that smashe into its head, crushing skull and flesh in one sickening motion.

The battlefield falls silent but for the low moans of the few guardsmen who have not yet succumbed to their wounds. Ligne remains in your care, and the few remaining Kroot have retreated. Your valor and arms have won the day, for now.

Colonel Ligne, however, has not moved nor stirred from his position. It may be unwise to leave him in his current state, though your senses can pick up a Guard regiment headed your way. Too late to save the Colonel had you not intervened, but perhaps they could assist him in your stead.

Of equal importance might be the fact that two Xenos remain, even now escaping, and could lead you to the very threat you seek.

Furthermore, it has been some time since you heard from Novus or Kerubiel, though for the reticent assault marine, this is hardly unheard of.

    Lowly, he says,

"Brother Lokir, can you track those monsters? I shall see to the Colonel..."

And with that, he lets the adrenaline ebb from himself, returning to a relaxed state. The Colonel could be badly hurt, and only his training could help at the moment.

This was what he was made for, the whirling, thundering brutality that was combat. Just as quickly as it begins, it fades as the battlefield grows quiet. Feeling a small sense of disappointment at the short skirmish, he turns to Lokir, xenos blood dripping from his cybernetic as it retracts.

Lokir and Zachariel work together, a well-oiled machine, a perfect fusion of technology and biology. The Kroot are easy to track, and the path leads out of the Black Zone, skirts what used to be the Four Pillars camp, and makes for the wilderness.

You track the Kroot back to a crevice outside of the Black Zone walls. While the tracks lead here, the two Kroot that escaped are nowhere to be seen. Nearby on the ground you can see deep indentations on the ground, similar to those made by an atmospheric transport that likely brought them here. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, these Kroot came from somewhere nearby on the planet.

Sneaking up is not, however, an option, as it seems the Kroot hunters realized they were followed. Before you can set up to ambush the Kroot in their den, one walks out. Even among the Kroot, he is massive, almost a head and a half taller than his two kindred with him. His maw is splattered with blood, and on his person he displays a diverse harness of trophies, ranging from Ork Tusks to delicate Eldar skulls to even the toothy maws of some unidentifiable predator. The shade of his grey skin changes from every angle, constantly reflecting the hues around him. He smiles toothily at the kill-team, then barks an order to one of the kindred, who reaches behind and hands the larger Kroot an object, which he holds up to the kill-team.

It is Brother Kerubiel's helmet. It's eyepiece is shattered, and the piece of armor is sprayed with gore. It is no great leap of understanding to deduce where the blood on his beak comes from.

With an almost laconic motion, he throws the helmet at your feet and in a voice that sounded far too much like Kerubiel's, he grates out in high gothic "Khart eat you too"

Lokir nods to Zachariel as the Servo-Arm crushes the Kroot's head.

    <Well met, brother!>

As the Kroot begin to melt away, Lokir's eyes and nose track their scent. He has sniffed their blood, tasted their sweat on the air, and noted the tang of their fear. They were trackable.

    <Aye. We'll track 'em and gut 'em.>

Before leaving, Lokir reloads his Bolter and makes his way over to where he left the Colonel, collecting his camo-cloak from the officer's prostrate form.
    -------
Outside the lair, Lokir bears his teeth involuntarily at the sight of a fallen Space Marine. A howl erupts from deep in Lokir's throat, rage-filled and furious. It echoes across the battlefield. Power sword crackling and Bolter held at the ready, he is prepared for whatever may come.

It is the Wolves of Fenris who do the eating.

On seeing the blood of Sanguinius dripping from the beak of a damned alien, Romeo's voice adds to that of Lokir. His is not a wolf-howl, but is still a wordless, inhuman roar.

His axe leaps into his right hand, a frag grenade into his left. He would tear them to pieces. There would be blood for blood. This fight is no longer to gather information on some unknown threat, but to inflict vengeance upon those who had harmed his brothers.

Romeo's howl seems to draw the attention of the larger Kroot - a challenge issued and answered.

The two kindred bound across the field, their skin shimmering, making them difficult to see even in the harsh sunlight.

Meanwhile, the larger Kroot moves like a bolt of lightning, springing across the field and closing the distance to Romeo in an instant, his blades already out and ready for battle.

Everything slows down, and comes into a horrific perspective for Romeo, as he lets the hatred flow through him. It gives him strength and purpose.

He can taste the blood of the foe in his mouth. Its scent is almost overpowering.

Yes, he lets the Thirst take control. It is needed - blood calls for blood. It makes him something more, as all of his Priesthood know.

He lashes out, with all the fury one can expect.

Lokir grins with bared fangs as the large Kroot rushes to their position. Lokir's ancient eyes spot weakness in the Kroot's stance. He quickly swaps his bolter for his bolt pistol and leaps forward.

A more patient hunter, Lokir's counter-charge comes only moments behind Romeo's, and is carefully timed to catch the Kroot off-balance. The Fenrisian power sword arcs forward at a nasty and dangerous angle, deftly wielded by hands with over a half-millennium of experience. Its icy-blue blade crackles with energy, and the wolf head glints hungrily at its hilt.

As the Kroot rush forward to engage, Zachariel's augurs crackle with static once again. He curses and clears them, but only the largest Kroot remains, engaged with Romeo. Deciding there was nothing else for it, the Dark Angel draws his chainsword and bolt pistol, then charges towards the Kroot, the teeth of his blade roaring in anger.

Khart is no green hunter. He is the leader of the Syal Kindred, and trusted by his Shas'Vre to complete his mission, a faith which he has lived up to time and again. He moves like water, blows flying by his body, missing by mere centimeters. The movements are so fluid, it seems like he has hardly moved at all. Even the monoblade parrying aside Zachariel's servo-arm seems part of some elaborate dance of death, as Khart immediately turns the parry into a vicious strike with his second mono-blade.

While Lokir's blows are nimbly dodged by Khart, the Old Wolf's keen battle instinct remains sharp.

As a second Kroot charges into the fray and attempt to hamstring Lokir, the Fenrisian whirls and catches the Xenos' blade in a vicious parry. The Power Sword crackles as it shears through the alien mono-edge like an axe through rotted wood.

Following through with his swing, Lokir delivers a deep cut across the Kroot's bicep, burning and scarring the tissue as the Fenrisian sword delivers its energized bite.

Zachariel lets out a squawk of binary as his blessed power armour is pierced, but fortunately the Kroot's blow strikes one of the many bionic areas of his body and skitters away harmlessly. Furious at this desecration of his sacred wargear, the Dark Angel lashes out at the Kroot with his chainsword in a coldly calculated blow, the rending teeth of the ancient weapon screaming as it whips through the air.

With centuries of experience behind his blade, Lokir unrelentingly presses his advantage. Only a moment after cutting across the Kroot's bicep, the Fenrisian Power Sword is poised for another slash.

Time to cut this one's string...

Romeo's left hand, holding the grenade, moves forward, as if in a punch. At the last instant, though, he pulls the hand back, dropping the unprimed grenade. What was the meaning of this?!

Even with the battle-lust overcoming him, he has muscle memory for cunning tricks to get past a foe's guard.

He lunges forward, attempting to grab the Kroot by the scruff of the neck, and drag him into a bear hug. He'll squeeze the life out of him, or worse, right now.

The Ultima Ratio - Orbit above Spite

Brother-Captain Mordrus' voice comes over the vox to your cells. Guard duty on an Deathwatch ship was hardly boring, but neither was it the glorious calling to battle you had hope for. So when the Brother-Captain calls you to the bridge with the highest priority, you leap at the opportunity.

As reach the bridge, the Brother-Captain gives you the horrifying news. Something has gone terribly wrong with the Kill-team's mission. Two members are confirmed KIA, their armor readouts reading no vital signs, not even Sus-an comas. With the safety of an Imperial Fortress world now in jeopardy, you are being inserted onto the planet. Your mission is to link up with the Kill-team and assist them in their mission to find and neutralize the Tau threat on the surface.

There is no time for landing craft.

In mere moments, you are strapped into the familiar form of an Astartes drop pod, the only one equipped on the Ultima Ratio. You have only moments to prepare before impact on the planet's surface.
