Last viable character a group of mine got from the mirror realm was the copy of a mercenary.

Mercenary character and the wealthy merchant character. They obligingly brought the merchant's Leadership gained followers into the mirror with them. The mercenary easily slew the merchant's doppel. The followers and the mercenary's doppel killed off the mercenary and the merchant just turns around and hires the (still willing to do whatever for money) mercenary doppel. Mercenary's player decided playing the mirror duplicate was cooler than their character concept anyway.

Was fun times.

I wanted to give a clear reason why beleaguered parties don't just visit the Spooky Hall of Scary Mirrors to replenish their numbers from their shadow duplicates.

Which I appreciate. The mercenary character also flipped from LN to CN so it wasn't much of a stretch to just play the duplicate either.
Also, I don't normally allow PvP nor eeeeevil characters at my table so this adventure was a nice break for my players.


On the other hand an illithid larvae thrallherd character of mine once schemed to farm the Mirrorverse for duplicates via dominate, helms of opposite alignment, mirrors of opposition, and a whole bunch of that ring that makes it so you're always considered to be still on your home plane. He figured he'd just keep sending in minions of his until the odds began to swing in his favor then no matter what his troops would outnumber the newly generated mirror duplicates. He was a very bad guy with entirely too much psionic oomph at his fingertips... er tentacletips.

I once had the party fight a doppleganger rogue in a hall of mirrors that cast mirror image on whoever bumped into one and reflected AoE spells so they would overlap within corridors. The doppleganger would continuously change into the party members and then touch the mirrors, all the while throwing AoE spells from wands around.

Psst...the Gaza-series can transform because its early models were civilian salvage/mining/construction suits, and the non-humanoid mode was presumably useful for hauling heavy loads while staying balanced.

The military models presumably kept the alternate form because getting rid of it would have required redesigning from the ground up, and the whole point of the series was getting a "good-enough" combat suit in production as soon as possible.

Or maybe they just wanted to sell toys.
