Is your overlord allowing you to colonize or wage war independently?

Yeah, I'm the equivalent of a tributary. Sucks giving up 25% and all my robots, but I was pretty DOOMed between the Scourge and the biggest Empire also neighboring and hating me (and the AE who's now my Overlord also declaring war on me). Everything's colonized, but warring is independent from my Overlord. Luckily they also don't like my nemesis, so it's a tag-team effort there. Last round annihilated their fleet and got me max ceded planets. When my Overlord wins their wars they've been gifting me planets too, ha. I may be close to the 40% of colonizable planets now.

Pretty benevolent overlords. What FE is it? Sounds like xenophiles.

From "giving up 25% and all my robots," I'm pretty sure it's the spiritualists. And...it's less "benevolent" for them than "it's nothing to us if they kill each other off"; the xenophiles don't demand tribute but do take a dim view of their vassal states fighting each other.

Yeah, it's a Spiritualist AE. I give them 25% and switch to F(?)Spiritualist with other mandated government changes, and they won't kill me themselves, but they won't protect me either. I was Democratic Egalitarian Militarist, but now I'm Imperial Authoritarian Spiritualist worshiping a God Emperor, sigh. I was just a handful of planets away from winning before the Scourge.

And another round of capturing the maximum number of planets from the formerly top non-AE empire and my neighbor and big jerk. I'm #2 now, but my Overlord still has Overwhelming fleet strength. The problem is they and their vassal (I keep forgetting about them, but they used to be my vassal) keep acquiring planets in the wars against the remaining trio of aligned empires. I'm guessing I'm looking at a long and cheesy war of independence even if I have all the other planets in the galaxy.
