The writer managed to avoid a Gary and Didi coupling the last time she had her mind set on it. This time an interruption would have to be exceedingly implausible. I'm not sure where they are going. It's possible that Didi will be as satisfied as all of Gary's other partners and that will drive Zii to even further distraction wondering whether or not she should be with Gary. It seems to me that Zii and Gary being a happy couple is the ultimate end game for this comic.

Lets be fair. "Didi making one weird decision after another" is clearly not something out of character for her that would need justifying by her feeling bad :-P

I once saw a movie called Pleasantville. It's a weird premise, but essentially a pair of Noughties teenagers get sucked into a TV and end up in a 1950's TV sitcom, where they break everything just by being.

Of the pair, the boy is a bonafide dork. He wears big goofy classes, is a complete pushover, wears uncool clothing, has had a sheltered life.... everything that Hollywood thinks is "dorky" whereas the girl is his polar opposite; charismatic, beautiful, popular, all the rest. As the movie goes on, however, it turns out that the boy isn't a nerd, he's merely an anachronism - big spectacles and collared shirts are the bomb in 1950's middle America, and his 2002 knowledge of mathematics, literature and history means that he's well ahead of his class in 1952, so he has all the time he needs to socialize. Meanwhile, the girl is a freak; her cool Valley Girl accent and lack of Starbucks make her a pariah, as all the things that she values don't exist yet.

Essentially, a Nerd Boy and a Cool Girl are thrust together in weird circumstances and the nerd slowly sucks the cool out of the girl, supplanting her as the homecoming king with a posse of friends and admirers while she stays at home trying to study. Hell, at one point she even starts to wear spectacles of all things. NEEEEERD!!! /homer-simpson

The comparison between the movie Pleasantville and the webcomic version of Montreal are, I think you may admit, striking. Although admittedly I don't remember how Pleasantville ended, I am going to assume that Toby Macguire's character engages in anal sex with comparatively fewer transexual latino models than Gary.

I'd argue that she's certainly acting like one, at least in regards to her relationships with Matt (post his crotch meeting Yuki's foot), Kiley, and Gary.

For crying out loud, look at her face when she's counting down the minutes until Matt is "safe" to have sex again. That is not the facial expression of a sane person.

And also, no, I doubt she will. Restraint apparently isn't a word in MA3!Montreal. At least not in the sense of abstaining from doing the nasty. Restraints on the other hand... *shudder*

I don't have any contempt for DiDi. Her character flaw is clearly that she is totally oblivious. There really isn't anything malicious in her actions. She just doesn't understand how emotions should work and she has zero ability to discern how others are feeling. I also don't have a whole lot of empathy for Zii. Her behavior throughout the strip's history has also been to use others for her own personal pleasure without any consideration for their feelings. However, she actually knows how others feel and she doesn't care. Her pain here is caused by the fact that she can't be open and honest with herself or others.

Zii is careless, and she's hurt a few people at times. But she's on the normal human scale. It's a significant character flaw with her, but she often knows and does better, and she's displayed a genuine conscience. I could see her as a good friend, albeit one who needs calling out occasionally.

DiDi is off the human scale. She really doesn't seem to understand how other human beings work, and she can be frighteningly obsessive about getting what she wants. I'm not sure she really knows what friendship is.

Perhaps I cam off a little more harsh on Zii than I meant. She isn't cruel or malicious, but she is self destructive. Her first serious relationship was ruined by her overactive libido and she has gotten herself into much emotional trouble by playing with fire regarding Sonya and Yuki. The new fan girl who's name escapes me promises more trouble. Zii knows the girl is using her, but she can't manage to give her the boot she deserves.

I wouldn't call the Zii/Sonya thing a positive result. Zii predated on the most naive girl in the building, molested her, and then while confused and reeling took advantage of her to get with Sonya's boyfriend. Now Sonya is even more confused and filled with self-loathing, her happy (if perhaps oblivious) heterosexual identity cracked beyond repair at the prospect that she might actually be lesbian, or at least bi.

Thesuccessful hate-sex with Yuki might be an upside, I guess, at least physically and in the short term.... but it's still not a very healthy relationship.

Sonya is frequently confused - not the sharpest fork in the crockery drawer, that one - but I'd hardly say that she was filled with self-loathing. Last we saw of her, she seemed to be rather enjoying her life. She's discovered an intense, eroticised taste for drama, and developed a circle of friends and acquaintances who feed it generously.
