Kyle seems to have returned. He is snoring loudly, fully clothed, in his room. Seems to have had a long night.

Arcivus is one of the first up. After his morning routine (prayer, exercise, etc.) at the ships deck, a few familiar faces begin to make their way over.

You count 16 candidates that have made the cut for Dr. Nimm to interview. You also invited the strange young girl, making the total count 17. Not sure how much you wanted to persue the squire.

It is a mixed group, all quite sea worthy. The airship is a vessel unlike any other, but it functions very much like a regular ship. You figure that with a few brief instructions, the crew can learn the ins and outs as they go.

When Dr. Nimm finally arrives, he is greeted with the following individuals:

Grath, Brilus, Darek: A trio of humans who say they have sailed the realm together twice over. Their young age would prove otherwise. Fairly well dressed, they may have not seen the worst of the seas, but seem quick enough to pick up what they need to.

Umren: Most dwarves are not seaworthy, but he wants to challenge that. Slim and dark-bearded, he sports one too many scars. Seems gruff and quick to anger, but keeps his composure. Interested in the pay more so than any others.

Nash: The oldest (human) of the bunch (easily in his 60s). Has nervous, wrinkled eyes, but says that will be the greatest first mate you have ever seen.

Gruunur: A short, bald, but powerful half-orc. A little on the older side (30s) and a tad quiet. Seems like a nice muscle or grunt addition to the crew.

Marland: A heavy set, and what smells like, a heavy drinking man. Sports an interesting mustache and a boisterous laugh. Says that he inspires his crewmates and raises morale.

Dandon/Falysa: Young fraternal halfling twins. They seem to know their way around a ship. What they lack in strength, they make up for in speed and enthusiasm.

Svana: A bit tomboyish, but a lady like nonetheless. Fit and able, but caries a bit of a sarcastic tone.

Alwor: A chipper gnomish fellow. Seems pretty bright. A bit young, but tends to grasp and keep up with you better than others.

Fenmaris: Sharp eyes for an elf. Makes you want to watch your coin purse. Very laid back and seems a bit disinterested if you don't pick him. Has a way to compliment things passively, but it somehow makes it more worthwhile.

Rikas: A dashing young half-elf. Worked as a diplomat in the past. A nice guy. Doesn't seem like he'd be trouble (compared to the rest).

Pimrin: An older, seabeaten halfling. He is missing an eye, but seems to have lots of experience. He wears a short stubble and always seems to have a toothpick in his mouth.

Gavin and Willem: A pair of older, human brothers who claim to have been present with Crassus, Christopher, and Xavier when they faced off against the dragon turtle many years ago. They are in their 40s, but seem like a good and loyal bunch.

You are given ample time to interview the lot. You can only carry a total of 30 passengers and you only require a crew of 10. I know you mentioned taking on extras, but be aware that they expect to be paid and fed, even if they are just tagging along. The DMG suggests a 2 GP per day minimum, but since this is a freakin airship, I will say that they are expecting closer to 5 GP per day. This can be negotiated individually, but be careful of talk and the effect it may have on crew morale.
    Dr. Nimm’s crew:

As the crew start to board and meet each other, Svana comes up to you.

Svana: Look, I gotta tell you... there is no way I am working with that jackass Marland. Let me know now... it’s either him or me.

At about the same time, a scuffle breaks out between the 3 halflings.. apparently some of these people know each other.

Pimrin, the older one, seems to have instigated it, but Falysa is seen on his back, chocking him, as some of the others break it up. Dan don, the brother is on the ground, seemingly recovering from a sucker punch.

It appears that the halflings don’t quite get along either.

In the midst of everything, you see Eliane about to slink off. Arcivus promised her a spot on the ship, but you seemed to have either overlooked or ignored her...

Also keep in mind the squire he means to include.

You should look for a crew of 8 if you consider Eliane and the squire.

    Spoiler: Too much detail?
    Show

Let me know if this is getting too detailed and you want to move onto bigger, world shaking matters. I could have simply have you hire a crew of 10 namesless and meaningless folk, but I’ll leave it up to you...

Oh... OK. I bring Elaine back and wait to see if we get a squire.

Meanwhile, I have Mr Benson keep order and separate the halflings.

I bring Marland and svana together and ask what the problem is. Then do the same for the halflings.

A number of downtrodden folk pounce at the opportunity, but the children they have to offer are either too young, sickly, or otherwise not competent for what you know you will be facing.

Some shady parents seem to sell their child off to... and just when you are about to feel bad for the kid, he ends up trying to pilfer your purse. You scold them and move on...

A few families scoff at your request, as only the king (and not simply a knight) can knight the squire and bestow the appropriate titles. As you are reluctant to swear fealty to the king, you are sad to have to agree with them.

All is not lost, however. You do get 2 children, from very different parts of town who seem like a good fit.

There is a human boy named Carden who is quick of wit and fairly able-bodied. He is about 12 or so, sports short, brown hair, and is a bit on the huskier side, but seems solid. While not as overly excited as some of the other kids you have met, his poise makes you feel like he would be less trouble. He comes from a lower middle class family who feel that he will learn how to be a knight, even if not given the official title, anc bring some honor to their family.

The other is a half-elf girl named Danae. She has a bit more spunk to her and has a charming, if playful personality. Though a girl, she does seem to have a stubborn will and wants to venture forth and become a great adventurer. She is about 14 and is lean and quick with reddish hair. She lives with her single mother who waits at a tavern. Not much was mentioned about the father except him being an absent drunk.

You can only take one of the two. Who is it going to be?
Arcivus chooses Danae. The girl being slightly older, and he can see the benefit in having someone using speed against him, its not like he is gonna find anyone to challenge him strength wise.

"Hallo Danae, so how would you like to become my squire? The job will contain daily exercise and sparing. I will train you in the basic swordplay and defence. I will teach you warfare and inner calm. And then Ill teach you history and religion. I take it you can read and write?"

    Skipping banter...

Basically, Svana accuses Marland of being a man-whore. He may or may have not fooled around with one too many women. You do not get a straight answer if she was one of them, but it seems that at the very least it was someone close to her. She despises him. He laughs it off.

The older halfling has apparently made advances to the female twin sometime in the past. He seems to not let up. He is also a bit crass to the brother, Dandon, and you feel it is not the first time that they have thrown down. Pirmrin seems to have the upper hand in these scuffles, being a bit older and more experienced. As a matter of fact, Pimrin will continue to goad Dandon, and make sly winks to Falysa to further upset the two of them.

Unless you can come up with a better solution, you get the feeling that you cannot have both Svana and Marland nor both Pimrin and the twins.

As this is all going down, Fenmaris seems to stick around, somewhat leaning on the ship (I assume that no one has boarded), watching everything go down. Those sharp eyes catch your attention as he intently watches. The dwarf and older man are gone, though.

So, if we are counting the Danae (squire) and Eliane (psi-girl), then you need 8 more.

At this point, Arcivus returns with Danae. They discuss on the way back...

Danae: No, I cannot read, but maybe you can teach me. I know some letters and words. I do know of Pelor... and Olidammara. They are the most talked about gods, though no one talks about them lately. But whatever I can't do, I can learn. I know how to use a dagger. Momma taught me where to stab a man if he gets too close...

She gestures to her gut... and then to her crotch as a crude joke (stab him in the junk), looking for a comical reaction out of you, all with a silly half-smile. She seems lighthearted and pleasant, but is trying to gauge your seriousness.

Svana scoffs and storms off. Even Marland tries to call her back, but you feel that it is playful teasing more than anything else.

Pimrin shifts his shoulders away, not wanting Mr. Benson to handle him.

Pimrin: I got legs! I can walk! See you later, hot stuff (to Falysa, but glaring at Dandon, who looks as if to advance, but more as a show since he gets his @ss handed to him whenever they brawl).

He walks off, as does Fenmaris with a disdainful look on his face.

    Final Crew:

Gruunur (seems to chuckle at the spectacle. May be easily amused)
Marland (boisterously laughing, rallying with the others to see what's what)
Dandon/Falysa (gathering themselves and start to inquisitively investigate the ship)
Alwor (a bit shy at this point. Watching the activity)
Rikas (staying nearby, as if ready to help deescalate a situation)
Gavin and Willem (chuckling at the Marland/Svana dynamic, but staying out of it)
Eliane (remaining quite... approached by Dandon in courteous fashion)
    Danae (staying by Arcivus' side)

Some of the male crew members notice the sizeable portion of women staff. Their glances sometimes turning into stares.

Not so much Dandon, Alwor, or Rikas. They seem the least scoundrely of the bunch.

    --

Danae is fascinated with the ship, and even more so on what awaits.

Wow! I saw it fly in, but thought it was a trick. So cool! Maybe I can help fly it!

You have not yet informed her that she will be assisting as a crew member, but she does not seem like she would mind it.

Armor for her would be of a typical elvish build, so is not to hard to find the right fit. She is equally comfortable in either set, and is not overly quick where the scale armor would hinder her movement. That is not to say that she cannot further develop her speed, but she might.

She handles the weapons awkwardly and almost primitively. She especially likes the rapier, as it is a lighter blade (like a dagger), but also due to its more ornate craftsmanship.

Eliane eventually comes up to you.

Eliane: Well, I'm here... now what?

    --

Fell eventually emerges from his quarters. There is some talk amongst the crew in venturing with a tielfing. He looks over at everyone and gives them a stern, yet confident look.

Fell: So, are we ready to head off?

Wrap up any conversation and then we can head off. Kyle may have to stay behind to accommodate space for Leena. He has no problem catching up with Crassus (he has not returned yet) and maybe even trying to seek out Bear Ghost.

I sorta hinted at the prospect of hard work along with more hard work. Arcivus is also a hard working man, and will help out with whatever tasks his abilities can tackle. (eventhough he sleeps in a private room).
Arcivus explains how a typical travel day might look. Early work, preparing food, or other chores. When on break from crew duty its studying or training, then dinner, which she prepares, serve (unless Mr. Benson has that completely covered) and eat with us (me, nimm and Xavier).

Eliane eventually comes up to you.

Eliane: Well, I'm here... now what?

You came! Im glad. I asked you to come, because I want to offer you a place on this airship as part of the crew. You are special, I felt it the moment I saw you first, and was confirmed in that, when you managed to stand up against me in the alley.
    Arcivus smiles at her
Im offering you a chance of another life, to explore the world and perhaps be part of some great achievements. And then I felt you had some special powers, Ive experienced them before, and im curious, but thats not something you have to explain to me, if you dont want to.

While you are here, you will help as crew, and on your breaks ill offer to teach you to read and write along with my squire Danae, and perhaps further down the road, you might have a chance to exercise your other abilities.

    What do you say?

He wasn't an imbecile, just clearly not wizard-material. Nimm's best guess is he is/was a sorcerer and likely a wild mage. It is possible he was a psion, but that would suggest higher than normal Int, and he was average at best.

I'll give Xavier a chance to post up on this before moving forward.

The crew is mostly experienced. I would say that they cannot fly this thing without Dr. Nimm on board (yet), so they get the gist of it pretty quickly. I don't want to get too detailed on actually how the ship works, so I will leave that to the imagination.

As first mate, though, you are the enforcer in a way, so you would be the one to help direct traffic, especially if aerial combat becomes a thing.

Give me 3 Cha checks. I want to see how well you can lead this group of scallywags.

Very good. This will have an effect on morale later on, if need be.

Despite Dr. Nimm's concerns about the mysterious wizard-boy wannabe, he remains in his room until it starts to get late.

I think everyone is ready to press on. Fell presents Dr. Nimm with a forked metal rod so that you all can be transported tot his new hell via the airship..

Let me know your next move. The crew is antsy to see what the ship can do. And how to man it.

    Lt. Commander sounds way cooler.

    Inspiration for Dr. Nimm!

You set out for about an hour or two and teach the men how to man the ship.

Dr. Nimm has to pull Arcivus aside numerous times because, despite being second in command, seems to have trouble manning the ship himself (let alone teaching). The crew is eager, and not (yet) mischievous. It doesn't take too long and eventually you have a well-enough trained crew. Tight work.

I'll say that Mr. Benson lacks the mental faculties to man the ship. He is an automation and can follow orders, but not to the extent of being autonomous considering the skill set required as a crew member.

Fell stays out of the way, but enjoys the flight. The crew seems amazed and excited about what sorts of places they will go, although there is some concern over Fell's destination of "hell" causing some worry...

Arcivus, you notice Eliane trying her best to learn the ropes. She glances at you now and again, but always looking away when you see her. You actually cathc one of the crew members looking up, quizzically,as if they heard something or someone called their name.

    Huh?

Eliane seems to chuckle a bit. You get the idea that she is either toying with her ability to communicate or maybe cannot control it too well.

Let me know what other role-play you want to get into before heading off to the next destination, where ever that might be.

He made a poor Int check, so he tried to help direct the crew, but was not very efficient. I suppose at one point you have words with him regarding what he is and is not responsible for.

Moving on, Fell presents his attuned fork and you place it in the appropriate notch.

The crew is very curious as to where they are going, as only rumors arise. When the Plane Shift is activated, a loud whirling sound is heard and the ship, although aloft, starts to pulse and glow slightly. And then, in a wink, you find yourself in a different realm.

    Spoiler: optional details
    Show

The air is thick and it is tough to breath. There is mild panic from the crew.

I told you we were coming here!

    So cool!

I didn't sign up for this!

Shut yer trap, yes you did!

They eventually settle as the ship continues to float. The landscape is not unlike that of your plane. There is a sky, land, mountains, rivers. The difference is that everything here has a red hue and is hot. The sky is an endless red swirl. The mountains range high, almost touching the sky, while the rivers themselves are little more than flowing lava streams.

Strange beasts are observed. Fiendish variants similar to those found on the Prime Material plane. Some advance on the ship, but are quickly shot down. The halfling twins seem to be very good gunners.

Fell points you off to the north, where, after a few hours, you pass over an enormous sea of lava... Very reminiscent of the layout of the Prime Material plane. He asks that you reduce your altitude a bit on your approach as land come in sight. A massive structure, seemingly newly built, can be seen. Built upon an impossible high mountain, with demons galore in patrol both by land and air, a massive castle sits.

Fell: We need to stay away from there. Now to the east...

A bit later, you come across a much more modest, but still very impressive keep, which is similarly guarded. You remain at a safe distance and land. It has been basically the entire day that you have been on the ship. At least 10 hours. The crew is tired as is everyone else.

You can roleplay a bit here for a mini-break. Feel free to interject on anything I mentioned prior to flesh out the trek here further.

Before landing, I make sure we land in the most defensible spot possible, limited access and elevation, or rough terrain at the minimum.

"Sea ships continue to travel while the crews rest. It would not do to have to land every time the crew gets tired. Once the crew becomes more adept, we will create shifts. Unless we are in battle or rough weather, not all the ship systems need to be operating at once.

"Arcivus, do not concern yourself with the technical details. Inspire the crew with your leadership, that they may emulate your heroic values."

Let's rest the crew then make reconnaissance flights around the keep, looking for strong and weak points.

Arcivus decide to take on a more observant role. A role that encourages, motivate and keep in line. He also inspire the crew as only a paladin can. The crew feel fearless and much better mentally equipped to be in these conditions. (+5 saves, immune to fear and charm, and advantage to spells if need be).

Arcivus sits down and have a word with Eliane and Daene

"I want the two of you to get to know eachother. I think that I can get something awesome out of the two of you as a team."

Arcivus gives Eliane a knowing look. And then turn to Daene.

"Eliane has the ability to speak into other peoples minds and I believe thats only one of many new abilities she has. And I need her to practice and I need the two of you to speak together that way in order for her to do so."

Not waiting or accepting any argument.

"The reason for doing so, is, I need to train, and I need to train fast. And for that mean I need to train smart!" I need the two of you to spar against me, one attacking my mind and one my body. And I need you, Eliane, to help Daene defend herself against me, by assisting her mentally"

I know its a lot to ask, but I believe you can do that! And if this works, you two will have a very valuable place with this crew and with me"

    "Are you in?"

If the agree then at first opportune moment we try it out.
