Wrath of the Righteous IC [3.5, Group B]

You reach Topaz Solutions without encountering anyone else. A wooden sign above the door bears a carving of a bundle of orange herbs and flowers hovering over a beaker filled with smoking orange liquid. The building's windows are tightly shuttered, but the front door hangs halfway off its hinges.

Jemus, upon seeing the building, raises his hand in a fist. Scanning the surroundings but not spotting anything, he makes his way back to the group and describes what he sees.
"I didn't see or hear anything, but that doesn't mean something isn't' lurking in there. I think we still need to check out the building, but we should exercise caution. I'll enter and scout it out. Anyone care to join me?" before heading off into the building as he hugs the walls.

Alamryn has fallen silent again. During the funeral she had felt like she should say something, but couln't think of anything smart or wise or even just compassionate to say. Horgus hadn't been very nice, in fact he'd been kind of cranky and mean, but he hadn't deserved to die. None of what had happened was deserved. It all made her very sad, and the hopelessness was starting to creep on her again, despite the encouragement earlier.

The broken and sagging door gives Trawyn a sense of foreboding, but he steels himself and pats Alamryn on the shoulder, "Follow along just a minute or so behind. We'll get this place checked out in good order."

He follows Jemus into the building.

Three humans in leather armor, armed with shortswords, are sitting around the shop. When the door opens, they jump to their feet. "Eh...who are you?" one of them, a blond man, says to Jemus. You notice a large sack on a counter near his hand.

Jemus straightens up, and though he has his hand on his sword, he keeps it low rather than bringing up. "Friend, just looking for a safe spot to hold up while all of these demons and devils try to bring the world down on our heads. What about you? The same? Safer in larger numbers and all that." he says as he tries to roughen up his language a bit.

[Kish]

"Uh...yeah. They've left here a while ago," the blond man says, looking between Trawyn and Jemus. "Anyone else with you?"

The man relaxes somewhat. "No one's been here for a day or more. Think they abandoned this place. Safe enough. Up here, anyway." He points toward the northwest corner, toward a shelf of alchemical supplies. "Haven't checked the basement. With it hidden like that, doesn't seem like a smart thing to poke."

"You've been here a day, with the world comin' crashin' down, and you haven't checked?" Jemus says, surprised.

[Kish]

"Sure. Not signin' up for either side," the blond man says nonchalantly. "Demons or holy artifacts...don't want to get killed."

"If you want to look down there, we were just discussing moving on anyway," one of the other two humans says, standing up. The blond man seems surprised by her words.

The bard snorts, "I hear ya about not takin' sides, but why would you move on if, as you say this place is safe for now?"

Jemus stands quiet as Trawyn asks his question, keeping his sword where it is but not changing anything about his stance.

The woman who spoke replies, "Oh, nowhere's going to be safe for long. Better to be a moving target."

"Hmmmm....I suppose there's some sense to that. You say there's access to a basement behind that cupboard there, hey? Is the rest of the place empty? What do you say Jemus? Looks like as good as place as any to hole up. We won't stop you folks from leaving if that's what you want to do."

Besides we suck at sensing motives?

With an almost noncommital shrug of his shoulders, Jemus answers "Sure. Sounds better than getting rounded up by either side. Don't suppose you know where you guys will go from here?" he finishes as he turns back to the two interlopers.

[Kish]

"Nah, we'll find somewhere safe. Relatively safe. Maybe we'll run into you again." The woman heads over to the door. Shrugging his shoulders and picking up his bag, the man who spoke first follows, as does the one who hasn't spoken at all.

Those outside see the door open, and a stranger is silhouetted in it.

As the group moves to leave, Trawyn turns back to them after studying the cupboard, "Hey friend, you said something about 'Holy Artifacts', what were you referring to?"

The blond man looks back at Trawyn and shrugs. "No clue what's in the basement--that's all."

Examining the shelf more closely, it's apparent that the alchemical supplies are fake, paper mockups rather than actual goods.

The bard follows the strangers out the front door then motions for the others to come in, before returning to the cupboard and pointing out the mechanism to Jemus. "What do you think? Check out this level, or go straight to the basement?"

Upon seeing Trawyn's signal, Alanryn starts moving towards the building. She felt uncomfortable out here in the streets, the feeling that they could run into a demon at any time never went far

"Who were they?", she asks Trawyn and Jemus once she reaches them, referring to the people she saw just leaving.

Tellos also seems interested in that question.

"Seemed to me like they were just folks looking for a place to hole up and be safe, why they decided to leave though is beyond me."

He shows the others the cupboard with the hidden door and mechanism. "They said they never checked the basement, but we haven't even checked the main floor yet. What do you think? Where should we start?"

I think its more likely you just allowed a pair of cultists to escape. Anyone who leaves a haven, and does not choose to seek safety of numbers, is probably working for the Demons.

Turning to the Tellos, "Could be I suppose, of course, it could also be perfectly innocent as well. Who knows? Mission is to check this place out is it not?"

The woman at the head of the group blinks uncomprehendingly at Semus. "Archives here? Well, it's all yours."

Just to clarify, because I've seen the opposite be the case in games I've been in before: This is not the DM not remembering the pass-phrase. She either doesn't know it, or is doing a very good Bluff check to pretend not knowing it.

Jemus purses his lips at Trawyn's question. "I'll give it a look and see if I can bypass it, if possible." with a less than confident reply. "Not sure what it could be, so you might want to take a few steps or more back."
