    Default Adding Divine Flavor to Cleric Spells

    This is a community effort.

    In this thread, we're going to add flavor to cleric spells by changing or adding descriptive text of a spell based on the deity worshipped.

    Follow these steps to add to the list:

    Step 1: Pick a Forgotten Realms Deity (from the spoiler tabs below)
    Step 2: Pick at least three cleric spells that haven't been chosen yet.
    Step 3: Write one or two sentences describing how the deity influences the spell (no mechanical changes, please).

    In the next couple of posts, I'll keep an update of gods and spells that are generated in this thread.

    Once this is complete, I'll spruce it up a bit with some artwork and put it on the DMs Guild for free. Everyone who contributes will have their GitP name mentioned in the document.

    Here are some examples:
    Kelemvor, God of the Dead
    Sacred Flame. You can see the faces of the dead within the flames of the spell.
    Inflict Wounds. This spell imparts feelings that death is near.
    Water Walk. Spectral skeleton hands and arms appear under you, as if they were keeping you from falling into the water.

    Loviatar, Goddess of Pain
    Cure Wounds. The subject feels intense pain, even as the wounds close.
    Hold Person. The target is wrapped in spectral straps of leather and lengths of chain.
    Zone of Truth. When a subject tries to lie, they feel like they are being tortured.

    Sune, Goddess of Love and Beauty
    Bless. The targets feels as if they are beautiful and desired while the spell is in effect.
    Cure Wounds. The spell is so pleasurable, that the subject nearly has an orgasm.
    Guardian of Faith. The guardian summoned is of immense beauty.

    Cantrips (0 Level)
    Guidance: A cold women voice whisper orders in the subject's ears on how to proceed to succeed.
    Light: The light is bright blue, like that of a cloudless winter day.
    Mending: Objects mended have a "frostbitten" mark in the places theyvwere damaged.
    Resistence: A pale sphere of first appears at the moment it is needed, protecting the target.
    Sacred Flame:
    Spare the Dying: The blood from the injuries freezes to prevent future blood loss.
    Thaumaturgy:

    1st Level
    Animal Friendship (Nature Domain): As the animal is charmed, a spectral spiked collar attaches itself to the animals neck. The animal is charmed, more out of fear than friendship.
    Bane: The targets of this spell feels restrained and disheartened. They are unable to put a full effort in their attacks and their attempts to save themselves.
    Bless: Targets of this spell feel a sharp pain in their back as they attack, like a whip driving them forwards to attack with greater ferocity. When they make a saving throw, a voice yells in their ear telling them what to do.
    Burning Hands (Light Domain): A flaming swarm of burning hands erupts from your fingertips. Targets who fail the saving throw are branded with the Black Hand of Bane.
    Command: A deep voice yells in the targets head, commanding them as a sharp pain comes down on their back from an imaginary whip.
    Charm Person (Trickery Domain):
    Create or Destroy Water: An iron spigot appears in the air before you. It either dispenses or draws in water. Any water dispensed has a faint chemical taste.
    Cure Wounds: The wounds of the target close as Bane himself orders the flesh to close. There is a flash of pain, and the flesh closes. Any tattoos, birthmarks, or other unique marks on the affected flesh fade.
    Detect Evil and Good: Small red Xs appear in your vision, targeting the creatures the spell detects. A word flashes in your eyes, ordering you what to do. Such as TERMINATE!
    Detect Magic*: Any magic items/people are outlined in red. Text scrolls down your line of sight, informing you about the magic.
    Detect Poison and Disease*: Any poisoned objects are outlined in red, as text scrolls down your line of sight informing you about the poison. If a disease is detected, a warning flashes in front of your eyes. (Basically, Bane is Skynet, and you are a terminator if you use divination magic).
    Disguise Self (Trickery Domain):
    Divine Favor (War Domain):
    Faerie Fire (Light Domain):
    False Life (Death Domain):
    Fog Cloud (Tempest Domain):
    Guiding Bolt: A spectral chain strikes the target in the back, and wraps around it. If you attack in your next turn, the chain constricts the target, granting you advantage in your next target.
    Healing Word: The target's wounds are painfully forced closed, quickly and efficiently, as if they were being pulled shut.
    Identify* (Knowledge Domain): Dozens of narrow, shallow wounds crisscross the back of the target, as if they had been flogged.
    Inflict Wounds:
    Magic Missile (Arcana Domain):
    Protection from Evil and Good: A spectral image of Bane appears behind the target, only visible to affected creatures. The awesome visage of Bane makes creatures apprehensive about affecting the target.
    Purify Food and Drink*: The food is purified, but also loses some of its appeal. It becomes dry and tasteless.
    Ray of Sickness (Death Domain):
    Sanctuary: A spectral iron cage appears around target and moves with it. Creatures that attempt to get to the target must first make a wisdom save to ignore the cage. If the target attacks through the cage, it breaks apart.
    Shield of Faith: The target of this spell is wrapped in chains, without restricting movement. These chains writhe in the body, absorbing blows as they strike.

By focusing energy and faith through a lake, a pond, or even a bowl of water, a high cleric of her faith can breach the fabric of dimensions and beckon all but the mightiest of creatures.
    Mass Heal: All subjects feel as if they are one with the world and one with the each target of the spell, as if they've overcome their discrepancies and can work together to achieve something better than themselves. These feelings may or may not fade after the spell is over, depending on the individual.
    True Resurrection: A waterfall appears in the location where the spell was cast, and when the waters wash away, the target of the spell appears, feeling at peace with itself.

    I clicked on this thread after reading the title without my glasses on. I thought your topic was: adding divine favor to the Cleric spell list. After not seeing that in the discussion at all, I put on my glasses and everything made a lot more sense, lol. I really like that you're doing this - it makes the cleric's deity choice matter beyond which domain they play (and really, in the back of the book it says "suggested domains," so you can kinda play any domain while worshipping any deity).

    Bane - An ethereal pack of wolves appears around your target, tearing at its legs, distracting and crippling it.
    Cure Wounds - As rejuvenating energy washes over your body, you feel the God of the Hunt's fury fill you, inspiring you to keep fighting.

    I just read a post about typos in title, i was sure you meant Divine Favor. XD But this is a much better discussion!

    Auril (she's a Goddess not a God)
    Guidance: A cold women voice whisper orders in the subject's ears on how to proceed to succeed.
    Spare the Dying: The blood from the injuries freezes to prevetn futur blood loss.
    Gentle Repose: The corpse gets frozen in a ice coffin, preventing decay.
    Bannishment: A flurry of snow swirl around the target(s), hidding them from sight. The flurry then fall on the ground, revealing an empty space.

    Ilmatur
    Cure Wounds: Minor injuries ressembling those cured appears on the caster.
    Warding Bond: While the target still take half of the wounds, it's the fallower of Ilmatur that receive all of the pain.

    Helm
    Resistance: A feint hardly visible image of a full plate appears on the target, representing Helm's protection.
    Ressurection: During the one hour ceremony, four spectral warrios in full plate stand watches at the carnidal points.
    Geas: For all the duration, the target feels a strong grasp on his shoulder. When the target looks at his shoulder, he sees Helm's eyed gauntlet reminding him to do the right thing. Only the target can see that gauntlet and if he suffers the consequences of Geas, it feels like if Helm's fingers were digging in his shoulder.

    Malar
    Spiritual Weapon: The spell takes the form on a bird of prey of your choice, diving on the target to claws at it during your turn.
    Inflict Wounds: Multiple bloodied clawing and biting marks appear on the victim's body, appearing and feeling as if he feel prey to a pact of rabid animals.

    Domain spells have been added to the spell list, including PHB and DMG.

    Oddly, there are no new cleric spells in Elemental Evil Player's Guide.

    If you guys know of any cleric spells from other books, please let me know so I can add them to the spell list.

    Cure Wounds: A bubble of water forms around the caster's hands and are then applied to the wounded areas of the body. The water glows as the goddess's blessing and energy is imparted through it.

    Sanctuary: A cascade of water falls around the target, diverting attacks and protecting them in the name of peace. Those who break the goddess's precepts by attacking through this peace lose her blessing and her protective waters.

    Gate: All placid waters fall into Eldath's domain, and her blessings give those well-versed in her ways a direct method to tap into her deepest powers. By focusing energy and faith through a lake, a pond, or even a bowl of water, a high cleric of her faith can breach the fabric of dimensions and beckon all but the mightiest of creatures.

    I like picking two gods, but with the same spells to contrast the difference between them.

    Loviatar, Goddess of Pain
    Gate. Passing through the portal pinches every nerve in your body at the same time. The pain goes away once you're on the other side, but the memory of it lingers.
    Mass Heal. All subjects feel excruciating pain as their wounds close and their diseases are cured.
    True Resurrection. The target feels like it was unfairly ripped from the afterlife it was supposed to be in, with excruciating pain as it feels - molecule by molecule - its own body regrow.


    Eldath, Goddess of Peace
    Gate. Passing through the portal causes feelings of contentment and utter sereneness.
    Mass Heal. All subjects feel as if they are one with the world and one with the each target of the spell, as if they've overcome their discrepancies and can work together to achieve something better than themselves. These feelings may or may not fade after the spell is over, depending on the individual.
    True Resurrection. A waterfall appears in the location where the spell was cast, and when the waters wash away, the target of the spell appears, feeling at peace with itself.

    It's quite fitting actually. Mielikki (as well as Loviatar) is of Finnish origin, and she's probably my favorite non-racial deity in the Realms. (Not because of Drizzt, however!)

    Faerie Fire (from Light domain) - a target that fails its saving throw sheds (dim) blood red light in a 10ft radius. It is also overwhelmed with the feeling that an unseen assailant intends to take its life; this distraction causes attacks against the creature to be made with advantage.

    Spirit Guardians - the spirits that encircle you appear as cloaked figures brandishing wicked, curved daggers - they claw at the shoulders of creatures affected by the spell (reducing the affected creature's speed by half), attempting to draw the daggers across their throats (dealing the spell's necrotic damage).

    Feign Death - just before the target falls into the spell's cataleptic state they mentally experience their own murder - the force of this event incapacitates them for the duration of the spell.

    Thanks, kudos to mgshamster for the inspiration of course!

    You could even rename the spells, so Faerie Fire becomes 'Bhaal's Nimbus' or maybe 'Blood Nimbus' and Spirit Guardians becomes 'Spectral Assassins'.

    Man, now I really want to play a cleric of Bhaal.

    I really wish Nature domain would've had Entangle on the domain list... Oh well, there goes the idea of stubborn ferns growing up and entangling people.

    Calm Emotions:
    The peaceful sounds and the serenity of a sleeping forest fills the target's mind, soothing its feelings.

    Guardian of Faith:
    A Large spectral unicorn appears and hovers for the duration in an unoccupied space of your choice you can see within range. The unicorn occupies that space and is indistinct except for a gleaming horn and the symbol of Mielikki emblazoned in green and gold on it's flanks.

    Silence:
    As the silence falls upon the targets, the silent sounds of the deepest reaches of a primeval forest fills their ears, even in the thick of a cacophonous battle. The targets can only hear sounds of the forest as if muffled and from a long distance, as well as their own heartbeat and breathing, and any sound they try to produce seem to suffocate.

    Spirit Guardians:
    If you chose Celestial spirits, their forms resemble those of bears, elks, foxes, owls, and wolves in any combination (your choice).
    If you chose Fey spirits, their forms resemble those of dryads, pixies, and unicorns in any combination (your choice).

    I'm going to have to update the formatting soon. Maybe put the list of spells under each deity. Otherwise it will be a pain to figure out which one still needs what spell.

    I only added the deities listed in the PHB, but I may take a look through SCAG and add in some more.

    As for paladins, they no longer gain spells through a deity. In 5e, they gain them through the strength of their own convictions and their oath.
