    Default Forgotten Souls IC

A wyrmling gold dragon soars across the cloudless blue sky. (1) It flies with elegant ease. Twisting its slender body, the magical creature rapidly changes direction as it zips over the crowded narrow streets of B'll Draconis. The dragon speeds through the market square, stopping only for an instant to snatch a huge purple egg from a passing vendor. The next instant the dragon is gone. It quickly turns the corner, leaving behind nothing but a rapidly disintegrating trail of magic dust. (2) Instead of being mad at the theft, the victimized shop keeper cheers the passing dragon. When stolen from, he exclaims to those around him of his good fortune at being selected to provide the beloved creature a treat. His fellow gnomes gather around, customer and shopkeeper alike deliver congratulations and a solid round of applause.

Most of the streets in B'll Draconis are lined with unique multi-story homes and shops made of every color glass imaginable. Almost every building is based around one geometric shape or another. The most common shapes chosen are the pyramid and cube. While fascinating to some, gnomish architecture bores the young dragon. Once again it effortlessly climbs high into the air. Far above the docks of B'll Draconis. The docks bustle with activity. Multiple wooden sailing ships sit waiting to be unloaded. The dragon has a clear view for miles, it admires the beauty all around. Soon a speck on the horizon catches its attention. Most of Dragonkind are curious creatures, the young especially so, this one is no exception. Investigate it must.

The dragon zigzags as it skims along the surface of the sea's crystal clear blue-green tropical water. As the speck on the horizon becomes clearer to the young dragon, the shape of a vessel can be discerned. This vessel is unlike the ships in the harbor, this vessel is long and narrow, with a row of sails and hundreds of long oars reaching into the water. A rhythmic pounding compels further investigation of these mysterious strangers.

The creatures on the deck are humanoids of various kind. (3) Most of the sailors on the deck are bare-chested, disheveled dragging heavy chains. (4) Intrigued by the sight below, the naive dragon ignores a nagging sense of danger. The dragon dives much closer to the approaching ship. Gazing into the ship's interior through an oar hole, the curious wyrmling comes face to face with one of the many blind slaves below deck. The man is pale and bald, continuously rowing, his face frozen in an expression of grief. The dragon feels a great pity for the man, and the many others like him. This thought is distracting, the dragon is brought back to reality when by chance it narrowly avoids being hit with a harpoon.

A group of sailors have taken notice of the young dragon. Climbing into the air is no use, a shower of harpoon, magic bola and nets with weights made of shadow iron encase the small dragon. (5) Slammed into the side of the boat it is dragged helpless onto the deck. The dragon is wrestled down by a large group of sailors. Heavy shadow iron chains are attached around it's neck and limbs. The beast is carefully moved into a small cage made of adamantine

The squawks of the panicked dragon can barely be heard over the rhythmic pounding of the drums. Terrified, the dragon struggles to stand but is unable. A halfling with large mutton chops, a monocle and a green hat of fine quality looks at his newest prize and smiles. The leader of the expedition Lady Mila Darkwood, a stout human in high leather boots, a naval officer's uniform and a cape confidently walks past, congratulating her companion on the capture. But reminding him to save his enthusiasm for the fantastic creatures of the second world.

The ship sails into the harbor. The pounding of the drums finally comes to a stop. On the deck a frightened dragon squawks for help. On the dock stands a welcoming committee of gnomes in fine dress. Thirty to forty low level dignitaries , along with the lord mayor of B'll Draconis and the project's lead scientists stand ready to greet the new arrivals. (6) As the ship is disembarked a tardy gnome scientist uses the spell dimension door to cross a great distance in a few steps. (7) He adjusts his clothing, straightening up as the first foreign envoy steps onto land.

Lady Darkwood disembarks with her entourage, confidently sauntering down the ramp. She is followed by a human male wearing roguish clothing. His sparse facial hair does nothing to hide his youth. He stands near the back of the group sharpening a vicious knife. A human male with white hair and hands which can not stop shaking, grasps a crooked walking staff. He needs help sitting down during his introduction. Two halfling brothers are dressed in fine clothing, wearing elaborate hairstyles. They smile often and broadly, as if they are thrilled to be on such an expedition. A female catfolk with spots like a cheetah acts as a diplomat doing most of the talking for the group.

    The lord mayor speaks;
“Welcome, I am Filimore Fifth the lord mayor of B'll Draconis for today. (8)(9) As such it is my great pleasure and honor to greet you. Thank you for responding to our invitation so promptly. You are the first to arrive. How wonderful. Please enjoy all the pleasures our city has to offer.” The lord mayor motions to a balding white-haired gnome with a large pair of spectacles balanced on his nose. “This is the project's Senior Master Scientist, Dr Gefrum G. Gefrum our foremost archaeologist. He will lead our expedition.”

A series of pleasantries are exchanged and minor technical details discussed.

The lord mayor motions to a freckled pink-haired gnome standing in the crowd gathered behind him. “This is Proxima Piccadilly our Senior Liaison Specialist. Please follow her, she will direct you through our inspired city to your embassy. We are still waiting for others to arrive, you will be informed when we have a finalized schedule for our departure to Ash Hill. Your embassy will have any additional information you require.”

The party departs, following a perky pink-haired Proxima Piccadilly through the busy streets. A series of depressed, defeated, broken slaves disembark, hauling large heavy crates upon their backs. Some slaves descend the plank carrying stacks of cages, mostly empty. Filimore Fifth, mayor for the day watches as a slave carries six empty cages, followed by two slaves carrying a single large cage with a desperate gold dragon wyrmling futilely banging against the cage's metal bars. Filimore frowns, obviously bothered, causing himself a moment of deep thought. In the end the inexperienced politician says and does nothing. He watches as the ship is unloaded. Eventually he turns to the assembled gnomes, congratulating everyone by name, shaking hands. Each gnome follows a custom to congratulate every member of the team by name for a job well done. The welcoming committee continues shaking hands and offering congratulations long after the last sailor disembarks.

    William Draconis

Lord mayor for the day Filimore Fifth and the welcoming committee conclude their congratulations. Before they can disperse, a panicked messenger holds on to his hat as he exits a dimensional door. He exclaims with urgency; “Our scouts report an incoming dragon rider from the West. We haven't much time to prepare.”
The lord mayor thinks for a moment, then says; “We need to assemble a welcoming committee at once.” He looks around, “We're in luck! We have a great welcoming committee right here! Follow me, everyone!”
A joyful chatter fills the air as gnome after gnome enters then disappears through an inter-dimensional door of intense bright light.

The group of talkative gnomes falls silent as the silhouette of a large dragon appears on the horizon. The dragon's large wings power it through the air at tremendous speed. On his back he carries his great grandson William Draconis, and the wizard Alanna. The dragon circles the magical city of gnomes. The elder Draconis soars over the harbor, the civic district and the market. The large shadow of the dragon attracts attention from below as hundreds stop and shield their eyes from the sun to watch the spectacle.

Williams grandfather descends to a district of B'll Draconis meant to accommodate the landing of large magical beasts. An assembly of thirty six low level gnome dignitaries wait for the dragon to land. Once William and Alanna have dismounted the tremendous beast transforms into the form of a human. The transformed dragon wears a stylish mustache. He is clothed in fine silks, his face is sharp with exaggerated eyebrows and lips.

Filimore Fifth steps forward, bowing graciously before the revered dragon.

“Welcome, I am Filimore Fifth the lord mayor of B'll Draconis for today. As such it is my great pleasure and honor to greet you. Thank you for responding to our invitation so promptly. You are among the first to arrive. How wonderful. Gefrum our foremost archaeologist. He will lead our expedition.”

The white-haired gnome extends his hand to William Draconis, “It's a pleasure to meet you. I can't wait for you to see the discovery, truly wondrous, I think without a doubt the most revolutionary discovery of our age. Think of the possibilities.”

Dr Gefrum G. Gefrum takes a moment to think about the grand implications. Dr Gefrum passionately states; "The greatest obstacle to peace and prosperity has always been lack of space. Our numbers grow, steadily every year for some time, and yet until now there was no where new for us all to go. Our control over this new land could put an end to division, hunger and war." Several gnomes nod as the doctor speaks. He continues, "It is humbling to think what we are gifted the opportunity to do, to know we have cemented our place in history."

    Sehnim Uritvo

The new Grand Duke of Bodgen sits silently on his sturdy black horse. He rubs his black and white beard as a steady rain falls. Water drips off the tip of his metal helmet. He pushes forward along the narrow forest road. Behind the Duke, two armored knights ride on fine horses. Behind them a cart full of supplies plods along, carrying five mercenaries through the mud. The Duke presses on, ignoring the cold rain. Suddenly the sky mysteriously clears. He looks up in amazement at the bright blue sky. On a nearby tree a large rune glows bright red.

The duke looks back with concern to his followers, he whispers; “These be powerful magics. Be on the ready.” The middle aged man, far past his prime draws his family's sword. The magic weapon pulses with blue energy. Suddenly hundreds of birds nesting in the surrounding trees being to chirp. The soggy forest echos with deafening sound. The duke yells something about druids but it is far too loud to hear him.

The chirping comes to an end, gradually returning to a reasonable level. The rune on the tree disappears. A tense moment passes before a single gnome removes his dark red cloak of invisibility. It appears as if he stepped out of thin air. He lights his pipe. Greetings traveler! I am Pip Pomyrn Junior Liaison Specialist. You have made it to the territory of the Gnomish Collective, welcome! Please respect our rules and customs, if you need help ask anyone, we're all happy to help.”

An obviously relieved grand duke returns the salutation. “Greetings, I am the Grand Duke of Bodgen. We are on our way to B'll Draconis at the request of your chief master administrator. We are thoroughly soaked and in need of proper lodging. I am sure you can help us with this?”

“But of course, I can guide you to the nearest dragon gate for near instantaneous teleportation to B'll Draconis.”

“Wonderful,” exclaims the grand duke, “Lead on.”

Pip Pomyrn escorts Grand Duke Medeus and his entourage to a large stone box resting silently in undisturbed forest. The gnomish liaison motions for the duke to enter through a large metal door. The duke looks around unsure.

“It is perfectly safe. Bring everyone inside. The wagon and the animals too.”

When everyone is inside the gnome closes the door, leaving everyone in darkness. The only light comes from the burning ember at the end of Pip's Pipe. In the dark room every sound becomes obvious. The heavy breathing of humanoids perfectly distinguishable from the heavy breathing of horses. Every note of the ridiculously upbeat song sung under the breath of Pip Pomyrn could be enjoyed.

Those inside the room feel the sensation of movement. Pip uses his song as a timer, knowing to open the door when his song is finished. He throws open the metal door confidently strolling out onto a busy square in central B'll Draconis. He motions everyone to follow. The duke steps out onto the cobblestone streets in amazement. He compliments his gnomish guide.

Pip Pimyrn looks around, disturbed he declares, “There's usually a welcoming party. No matter, I will personally take you to your embassy. Allow me to inform you of the wonderful sites of our historic city. This way my lord, if you please.”

Duke Medeus takes a few silver coins from his purse, placing them in the hands of Sehnim Uritvo and the rest of his hired soldiers. “Take these and find stables for the horses then find yourself appropriate lodging. Diplomatic circles are no place for your kind. I will call upon you when we are ready to launch our expedition. Do not get arrested. When called upon be equipped, alert and sober.

The grand duke turns to follow Pip Pomyrn to the Bodgen embassy in the civic district. Pip begins his tour by saying; “My lord, allow me to take you on a fascinating journey through time, if you'll look to your right... ” The pair turn a corner out of sight.

Sehnim bit down on his tongue until the Duke passed out of sight, and turned to his fellow mercenaries.

"Well, at least he pays well, right? C'mon, let's head to the stables." Sehnim turned his horse around, heading towards the stables. He listened to what one of the other mercenaries was saying, a raunchy tale of his time with a bottle of wine and a noble's daughter.

Hmph. Typical lot. These mercenaries were bawdy, untamed brutes. But they were good in a fight, and they they did their jobs well.

They could tell that he was different. That he was cut from a different cloth, and they kept their conversations with him aloof. From what he had heard, the prevailing theory was that he was a runaway merchant's son, who abandoned a life of luxury to make his fortune on the road. If they only knew what he was...

As for the Duke...he was getting a deal on this. He was charging almost half of what he usually did. This expedition piqued his curiosity. A new world? There'd be a lot of opportunities for a Changling of his talents.

When they got to the stables, Sehnim striked up a conversation with one of the stablehands.

"I don't suppose you would know the name of a good inn here? Our employer is a rather frugal one, and would never think of paying for comfort that is not his own. At least the pay is decent."

I guess after this, Sehnim retires to the inn and meets up with the Duke in the morning. Unless you have something planned between now and then.

William Draconis and his party are shown to their embassy by Advanced Liaison Specialist Lily L'anya. She speaks loudly and clearly in a squeaky voice. Her obviously passion for her work shines through. She goes into great detail in her tour of the city districts. She motions to a solitary seven story pagoda at the center of a courtyard; “Behold the tower of Saadaren, famously the location of the first attempt at a mass fly spell, the beautiful marble arch at the bottom of the tower is a monument to memorialize the nine victims of that day, rather than focus on unfortunate events of the past, today the tower is admired for it's beautiful symmetry, the tower was placed in its exact location based upon complex mathematical calculation, If you'll look to your right you'll see...”

William Draconis and his companions eventually reach them embassy. There they are informed of the impending arrival of more specialist to join the expedition. William is told they will arrive by gryphon the next morning. He and his companions are assigned rooms and invited to a formal dinner that evening.

The night passes, it is now a new day.

    Aleandel Gerathinion

On orders from their military commander Aleandel Gerathinion, Marel and Esellon scout the road ahead. The early morning is foggy, the roads are full of mud, everything drips with residue of last night's rain. It is a beautiful morning. Trekking through the vast Elven forest has been uneventful. None of the factions hostile to the High Khan have been sighted on their slow progression near the borders of several unfriendly territories. Esellon dismounts her Valenar Steed, inspecting the ground. Even the most skilled survivalist can not help but make tracks under these conditions. Upon the ground Esellon notices the obvious markings of a solitary elk crossing the road.

Leaving Marel on the road, Esellon moves quietly through the tall grass. She draws back her bow as she steps into the trees. She finds the elk, not far from the treeline. It is heavily decomposed, far more decomposed than normal based upon it's tracks. Around the fallen beast are three large vulture-like birds. They each tear large chunks of rotting meat from the wild animal's body, swallowing the dark red meat whole. Spotting Eselllon, the birds move aggressively to protect their meal. She takes a step back. The birds work themselves into a frenzy. Suddenly hundreds of birds nesting in the surrounding trees being to chirp. The soggy forest echos with deafening sound. Esellon takes another step back, she bumps into a thick tree. She turns to see the tree is marked, a large rune glows with unnatural red light.

Out of thin air purple zaps of electricity strike the attacking carrion eaters. The attacks do not appear to do serious damage to the birds, only singeing and ruffling feathers. Disturbed, the birds fly away out of sight. A tense moment passes before a solitary gnome removes his dark green cloak of invisibility. It appears as if he stepped out of thin air. In his left hand he holds a magic rod, pulsing with purple energy. He extends his hand with a big smile. “Greetings traveler! I am Quinn Qual Quopel Advanced Forestry Ranger. You have made it to the territory of the Gnomish Collective, welcome! Please respect our rules and customs, if you need help ask anyone, we're all happy to help.”

Pleasantries are exchanged between Quinn and Esellon.

"The Elk." Esellon states, asking for an explanation for it's unnatural decomposition.

Quinn looks down at the shreds of meat and bone. He frowns, but only for a moment. "A quirk of the land in this part of the forest, I think it best we move on." He takes a final concerned look back at the decomposing kill.

Esellon leads Quinn back to Marel on the road. “Did you find the elk?” Marel asks.
    She responds,
“Yes and no. We'll have to make due with something else to eat tonight. Meet Quinn, a ranger of the Gnomish collective.” Pleasantries are exchanged between Marel and Quinn. Esellon speaks again. “We've arrived, we should take Quinn and return to the others."

Quinn joins Esellon on her Valenar Steed, they trot down the muddy road together. Eventually they meet up with Alandel and the rest of the party. Alandel's scouts give a report. Introducing Advanced Forestry Ranger, Quinn Qual Quopel of the Gnomish Collective. Quinn bows deeply, speaking upon its completion. “Good day and warm greetings of friendship. You have made it to the territory of the Gnomish Collective, welcome! Please respect our rules and customs, if you need help ask anyone, we're all happy to help. Your long journey is nearly at an end. I can guide you all to the nearest dragon gate for near instantaneous teleportation to B'll Draconis.”

Quinn Qual Quopel smiles politely, with hands folded in neatly in front of him awaiting a response.

    Grosvenor Silverleaf

The forest seemed to come alive as suddenly hundreds of birds nesting in the surrounding trees being to chirp. The soggy forest echos with deafening sound. Through the noise Tamriel Goodlight hears a small creature crunching through the fallen leaves.

    “Someone's coming!” she whispers. “Hide”

Several elves scurry up tall trees, perched high above with their weapons drawn. They wait for something to show itself. The chirping comes to an end, gradually returning to a reasonable level. A tense moment passes before a single gnome removes the hood of his dark red cloak of invisibility. With only his hood removed he appears as a floating disembodied head.

    “Hello?” He shouts.

Reaching onto his forehead he flips down a pair of diamond goggles. His goggles are designed to see invisible creatures. He scans the forest, seeing nothing. The gnome lifts his goggles, scanning his surroundings with his own eyes. Seeing nothing, he shrugs. Flipping up the hood on his invisibility cloak, he disappears from view.

The group climbs down from the trees after an appropriate time has passed. The group of Sun Elves travel a few miles through the forest to the location they left the horses and wagon. Sitting on the wagon peeling a long yellow fruit is Alysia Silverleaf. At the bottom of the cart her wolf pulls back it's ears until it recognizes the approaching party. The wolf begins wagging her tail at the sight of her approaching friends.

The stealthy band of Sun Elves manage to evade detection along the entire length of the Gnomish Collective. Encountering the mysterious chirping birds at several points along their path. The noise acted as an warning, for shortly after the chirping began the invisible gnome would surely appear. As soon as the chirping began Grosvenor and his companions would disappear up the trees.

After several false alarms the frustrated Junior Liaison Specialist asks the birds; “This is funny? Sending me out here over and over again? Getting no response he throws his hood over his head in a huff, grumbling as he disappears into the forest.

On the group's final encounter with the invisible gnome he becomes so worked up, he declares; “Fine, don't bother alerting me if anyone travels through my stretch of forest, I don't care anymore, I'm going to get a drink at the Orange Octahedron Inn. Leaving his hood down the gnome casts a teleportation spell, sending him directly to the tavern's door in B'll Draconis.

The party ride their wagon across the Tempestan Bridge. Having accomplished their mission Grosvenor Silverleaf, Tamriel Goodlight and the others enter B'll Draconis without alerting anyone. A perfectly successful infiltration. Their wagon full of supplies navigates the busy narrow streets, coming to a stop in front of the joint Elven embassy.

The horses are brought to a clean stable. Through a brief conversation with the elderly gnome stable master Sehnim is left with the impression the horses are in good hands. He asks the old timer for directions to a good inn at a fair price. Unsure, the old timer passes Sehnim off to a younger stable hand. She directs him to the Topaz Tetrahedron on the edge of the market square. She describes the place as having good food, good ale, cheap rooms and a lively patrons. Sehnim and his fellow mercenaries find the inn much as described. Several rooms are rented, providing a comfortable place to sleep for the night.

Yes, once everyone is introduced and all the players are ready, I will bring the group as a whole to the abyss.

Ok, so the wild elves are interested in appearing as much powerful and menacing as possible, besides their natural gentleness with the good natured gnomes. As for meetings, if Aleandel and Colloman are needed with the others commander, they will be present, if not, Colloman will probably meet some of his old friends, while Aleandel will train and prepare himself for the next day.

    Vilca Hucumaripchurin

Vilca and his followers cross on foot into the land of Kintara. There is no obvious marker or boundary to distinguish between the Elven forest and the heavily forested lands of Eastern Kintara. The crossing is made under the cover of darkness on the night of a full moon. Their objective is a teleportation circle, a ring of ancient stone monoliths placed in magical alignment on sacred land.

In days long ago, a series of teleportation circles allowed Vilca's people to travel to every strategic location on Kevana. Due to the implications of near instantaneous travel many lords had the ancient stones ripped up when found upon their land. The removal of a single circle disrupted the energy of the surrounding circles. Over the centuries, fearful nobles ripped up so many stone circles to make the network largely unusable for it's original intention.

Those with deep knowledge of the pathways are still able to use the circles to travel. Knowing for example, that the circle located just inside Kintara is still connected to the circle at the center of B'll Draconis. Use of the circles without proper knowledge can be deadly as some teleportation circles are wildly chaotic. Even with proper instruction, the ritual of crossing is not to be taken lightly.

Vilca knows the stone circle is several miles inside Kintari territory. He moves silently between the trees, followed by Tuta the awakened she bear and his trusted fellow sentinels. Arriving at the edge of the sacred teleportation stones, Vilca and his followers are troubled to find a Kintari logging outpost established around the massive stones. Hundreds of surrounding trees have been cut down to stumps, further disrupting the energy of one of the last working pieces of the islands teleportation network.

The logging crew have gone to town for the night, leaving two loud inattentive guards with crossbows to protect the site overnight. One of the guards, a human wearing a long coat and a wide hat, sets his loaded crossbow against one of the standing stones. He walks to the edge of the stones. Unaware he is being watched. Vilca sees the guard face the trees, drop his pants and begin to relieve himself. With a nod Tuta advances beyond the trees. As the guard is pulling up his pants, he sees the mighty she-bear standing on her hind legs. She lets out a thunderous roar.

The guard yelps a startled scream, stumbling backwards, yelling; “Bear, there's a bear” to alert his partner. Stumbling over his feet, the inept guard trips and falls, scrambling to his feet, he runs as fast as he can, past the teleportation circle in the direction of the nearest town. His partner, a human wearing dark leather armor crouches and fires his crossbow. The bolt flies past Tuta, impacting in a nearby tree as deep as the bolt's bright red fletching. The second guard disappears into the forest.

Vilca and his companions advance towards the ring of stones. They join together to form a circle of living beings, channeling the full power of the ancient magics. The stones hum, beginning to glow with strange light. At first the light is orange, then green, finally an intense blueish white.

    -

Sitting at his desk atop the Tower of Saadaren, Chief Master Magician Portmos Portlandous VI admires his view of B'll Draconis. A cool breeze blows in from the water. Another perfect night. Working long into the night is common practice among the magicians of B'll Draconis. Portmous takes a break from his heavy book. Stepping away from his enormous desk, he walks to the large window. Gazing at the city, he marvels as every building is illuminated. Glancing down into the courtyard, he notices the stone monoliths of the ancient teleportation circle glowing with orange energy. In his fifteen years at his post this has never happened.

The curious gnome calls to his assistant. She responds; “How may I serve?”

Portmos tells her to; “Assemble the staff in the courtyard, send a messenger to the lord mayor. We're about to receive guests. Best to do it right.”

    -

Bathed in intense blue light seven Sentinels of Bharrai disappear as an intense blast of light beams into the sky. Vilca flies across the continent, arriving at the teleportation circle in B'll Draconis a fraction of a second later. Assembled are twenty four representatives of the gnomish magical community and the lord mayor.

    The lord mayor steps forward into the circle of stones once the intense blue light dissipates. The lord mayor speaks;
“Welcome, I am Reginald R'byrt the lord mayor of B'll Draconis for today. As such it is my great pleasure and honor to greet you. We did not expect anyone to use these ancient stones, you are the first in sometime. How wonderful.” The lord mayor wears a slightly disturbed look as he considers the implications. He continues addressing Vilca and his companions. “Many representatives have already arrived, However we are still waiting for the arrival of others, you will be informed when we have a finalized schedule for our departure to Ash Hill. As the hour is late, I will personally show you to your embassy. I am sure your embassy will have any additional information you require.”

Reginald R'byrt guides Vilca, Tuta and the others through the streets of B'll Draconis, to the joint Elven embassy. The lord mayor leads the way though the civic district. Vilca notices the wide, well maintained streets, flanked on either side by massive state owned buildings. Mayor R'byrt is not much of a tour guide but he points out several important buildings. Drawing particular attention to an incredible fountain and heroic monuments dotting the district square. Coming to a stop in front of a large building with an ornate wood door Riginald R'byrt announces the party's arrival. The lord mayor wishes everyone a pleasant evening, departing with a bow.

Vilca enters the embassy, alongwith his squad. The few night-working civil servants raise an eyebrow when they see five Humans, openly frown when the Half-Orc appears and drop their jaws at the moment the armored bear follows. Vilca goes to the counter, flashing his usual smile:
"Sorry for our arrival so late into the night. I have already asked the embassy the right to host non-elven individuals, here is my authorisation." He produces a scroll adorned with the seal of one of the elvish lords that jointly manage the embassy. Tuta raises on her hindlegs, closes towards the receptionist and speaks with her low, growling voice. Her tone is not menacing but rather matter-of-factly.
"You will note that the authorisation enables for 6 non-elven persons to be harbored here tonight - four Humans, one Half-orc and me. I am not an animal companion. He is." she adds, pointing to Farshi Tehi's wolf companion. The Half-Orc pets him. Vilca refrains himself from giving Tuta a sidelong glance.

The Sun Elf then merrily concludes:
"Well, team, let us go to bed now. The time is late enough. Tomorrow, let everyone be ready to leave by 8; until them, I suppose we will all go our way and enjoy the city early in the morning."

    Lucien Battlesong

The Duke of Jotrana's clipper cuts easily through the calm waters approaching B'll Draconis. Powerful gusts of wind propel her forward. An alert sailor shouts as she spots the city on the distant horizon. Sailing into the harbor at B'll Draconis is the glorious conclusion to Lucien Battlesong's grand tour of South West Kevana. Lucien has just completed a tour of sixteen friendly minor states. At each stop a grand ball was held in his honor. Countless priceless gifts were bestowed upon him. The nobles extended their generosity in the hope that whatever benefits come from contacts made in the second world, would flow freely back to their lands. During the last twenty one days Lucien has been treated to the pinnacle of food, fashion, art and entertainment.

Lucien sails aboard the largest, fastest, most modern and luxurious of the many ships owned by the Duke of Jotrana. Lucien is the Duke's cousin, as such he as been entrusted with a two-fold mission. First, establish contacts in the second world for the purpose of enriching the Duke or spreading the enlightened culture of Jotrana to new lands and people. Second, Lucien is to showcase Jotrana art and science while on expedition. Specifically the Duke would like to see the prestige of Jotrana increase in the eyes of her international partners and rivals. Special attention should be paid to the representatives from Bodgen and Kintara.

For the purpose of fulfilling this mission the duke has promised to cover all expenses. He has hired a highly skilled ship's crew. The equipment provided are of the highest quality. Two member of Jotrana's powerful clergy have been assigned to the mission, along with one of the duke's old friends, a talented and highly respected diplomat.

Sailing into the harbor of B'll Draconis Lucien's ship squeezes into a spot along the busy dock. Awaiting their arrival is a welcoming committee of approximately twenty five gnomes. A second welcoming committee from the embassy of Jotrana easily outnumbers the first by two to one. The Jotrana delegation carries large Jotrana flags, employs a small honor guard and has a four horse carriage ready for departure.

The plank is lowered onto the dock's soggy, warped wood boards, Lucien and his entourage disembark.

A single gnome steps forward from the smaller welcoming committee. She rolls her hand with flair, speaking to Lucien and his followers.

“Welcome, I am Proxima Piccadilly, the lord mayor of B'll Draconis for today. As such it is my great pleasure and honor to greet you. Thank you for responding to our invitation. How wonderful. Please enjoy all the pleasures our city has to offer. Many others have arrived before you, we are in the process of finalizing our schedule for our departure to Ash Hill. I expect our expedition will be ready to launch within days."

    She continues;
“While my typical function is as a Senior Liaison Special I would be delighted to personally escort you to your embassy. I am certain you will all enjoy my wonderfully informative tour of B'll Draconis.”

A uniformed officer from the Jotrana welcoming party, quietly slips in next to Lucien, offering him another option, the young officer whispers to Lucien that his carriage is ready to take him directly to the Jotrana embassy.

    Sir Kyris

A line of sixteen cavalry from the Akshasa republic trot along a forest road two by two. These horse-guards are on duty, sworn to escort a caravan of of high level dignitaries to the city of B'll Draconis. Behind the honor guard a series of closed carriages rumble down the road. Each carriage is reinforced with heavy armor. Each carriage rolls on four large wheels, pulled by a pair of enormous three horned Rhinoceros. A small contingent of honor guard bring up the rear.

Lady Sindra the high general of Cydonia sits alone in her private carriage. She glances out through the narrow window as her convoy crosses over a small wooden bridge. They are crossing through a poor village. She continues to observe the world around her she spots several people standing by a large mill. Several of the commoners turn to watch the caravan pass. For the briefest of moments the Illumian General comes to reflect on her connection to the small group of villagers. Her carriage speeds past. Lady Sindra returns her focus to the inside of her carriage. She sorts through a series of scrolls in a canvas bag, selecting one, she begins to read.

After more than ten years of study Lady Sindra has been made supreme commander for this mission. She knows very well her decisions made on her own, in a isolated environment will act as a test of her mastery over her chosen disciplines. She knows her actions will be observed and judged by others within the cabal. Lady Sindra is not motivated by fear of failure, instead she is determined to prove her mastery to herself. Everything else is secondary.

In the carriage ahead of Lady Sindra rests Sir Kyris, a promising devotee of the sage. The dedicated knight has twice distinguished himself with the cabal's leadership. Sir Kyris' consistent displays of mastery has attracted the attention of several of those with a seat around the black table. Their directives have placed Sir Kyris on this mission. Lady Sindra has been instructed to observe him closely.

With a crash the Caravan rolls to a stop. Lady Sindra looks up from her scroll, glancing out the narrow slit window at the back of the carriage. The cart behind her is overloaded with supplies, one of it's wheels has broken. The Illumian general returns to her scroll, knowing the problem with be rectified shortly. A group of artisans and experts exit the last carriage to inspect the damage. After a brief discussion a magical binding spell is cast and the wheel is made whole again. Shortly afterwards the caravan rolls down the bumpy road once again.

Lady Sindra perceives the journey as passing quickly, When in realitiy she travels for many hours. She enjoys her ample time to study several scrolls. Placing one of the texts back in its bag she feels a sense of accomplishment having mastered it's contents. Before she can select another the caravan once again comes to a stop. Looking through the narrow window she is unable to see anything unusual. A member of the honor guard trots past her carriage, making his way to the front of the caravan. Lady Sindra concludes that she has reached the border with the gnome collective.

The lead carriage contains what the uninformed would call the most powerful figures in the Akshasa Republic. A collection of malleable figureheads given important sounding titles but no real power. As if to punctuate this thought, Lady Sindra stretches out her legs, enjoying the ample room in her private carriage. She knows that at the head of the caravan the six most powerful leaders in the Akshasa republic sit together cramped in a single carriage. Lady Sindra continues on with the study of her scroll. She allows her minions to handle unimportant business.

Gathered at the front of the caravan is a group of enthusiastic Advanced Liaison Specialists of the Gnomish Collective. They introduce themselves to the official head of the Akshasa Republic. Cydonia's puppets play the part of politicians well, delivering a believable performance. A senior government official graciously accepts the hospitality offered to him. Declining, as instructed, any offer of magical transportation. An offer of escort along the road is agreed. Lady Sindra looks up from her scroll to see that once again that she is on the move. The caravan is escorted without incident to B'll Draconis. Making a noteworthy entrance over the Tempestan bridge. The Rhino's rumble through the city, stopping in front of the Akshasa embassy. The door to Sir Kyris' carriage is opened, a uniformed coachman invites the knight to step outside.

    Grosvenor Silverleaf

The ranger was still laughing, joking about the invisible gnome with his sister. Both elves rode in the wagon, their wolves trotting along beside, undoubtedly drawing looks from the city dwellers in B'll Draconis. When they arrived in front of the embassy, Grosvenor jumped down from the wagon and looked about for anyone who would welcome them, or perhaps do them harm, as foolish an idea that would be right in front of their own embassy, but one had to be careful. He was particularly careful to watch over Tamriel Goodlight. Though the elven nobleman was a powerful wizard in his own right, Grosvenor was charged with protecting him on this journey.

Presumably noticing nothing too out of sort, Grosvenor will knock on the gate leading to the embassy.

    Chloe the Blackblade

Chloe leads a band of Grahf explorers down the most direct route to B'll Draconis. Along a rarely traveled a seasonal road through the mountains. It is the shortest distance from A to B. This land holds a well deserved reputation for danger. Bandits routinely hide along the isolated mountains, only too happy to relieve isolated travelers of their gear. The surrounding dwarf kingdoms are territorial and aggressive. All manner of monstrous creature make their home high in the mountains. Giants, ogres and trolls are known to roam the peaks. The selection of this route was made as a direct challenge to Chloe.

The party come upon a fast flowing stream of pure mountain water. The group takes a moment to rest, while the horses are watered. From her vantage point, Chloe can see a great distance in all directions. She takes a moment to appreciate the spectacular view. She is surrounded by countless snow-covered peaks and lush green valleys. Chloe's horse Ebon looks up from the stream, cool mountain water drips off his lips. He takes a few steps towards Chloe. He makes several horse noises before speaking in a low monotone. “It sure is a nice view, we should enjoy it while we can. I wish you hadn't dragged me along on this mission. I fear it will bring doom to us all.” A moment passes before the dour horse adds under his breath; “I wish Terrance were still here, he'd get us through this. He and I used to be quite a team.” The weary horse lets out a heavy sigh, taking a few steps back towards the road, away from Chloe.

Dreggor Kals whispers to Ingol Cyrstaleye while Erlin Amzamble quietly listens. They stand huddled together, far down stream of Chloe. Each occasionally glances back in her direction as they speak.

“I'm just saying, it's not right, and we all know it. We're all suppose to put our lives in the hands of that fat broad? We're going off into the unknown with her as our leader. Think about that for a moment. Why is she even here? We don't need her. It's madness! Some old man on the council snaps his fingers and suddenly she's our problem? She'll get us all killed.”

Ingol listens, brushing back a strand of hair; “Yes, it's obvious she doesn't belong here, but what would you have us do?”

“Think about it!” Dreggor responds; “Now is our perfect opportunity, people die in these mountains all the time. We just wait for the next rickety bridge and push her off.” To illustrate, Dreggor motions pushing two hands forward.

“That would be easiest.” Erlin chimes in, “But it's risky.”

“I suppose you would be the one to do the pushing when the time comes?” Ingol asks Dreggor.

“Well.” Dreggor ponders, suddenly losing his conviction.

“Yes, that's what I thought. Gentlemen do what you like but do leave me out of it. Good day.”

Relations remain icy between Chloe and her companions as they make their way through the mountains. They traverse the mountains without indecent. The party makes their way through the rugged forested foothills, entering the territory of the Gnomish Collective. Suddenly hundreds of birds nesting in the surrounding trees being to chirp. The forest echos with deafening sound. On several surrounding trees large runes glow bright red. Eventually the chirping comes to an end, gradually returning to a reasonable level. The runes on the trees disappear. After several tense moments, everyone lowers their guard.

    -

A very drunk gnome wobbles on his bar stool. He downs a bright green alcoholic drink in one gulp, demanding another. “What's troubling you friend?” The innkeeper at the Orange Octahedron asks, while dutifully filling another glass with the sparkling green concoction. The drunk gnome swallows the liquor, before standing up, accidentally knocking over his bar stool.

“It's like I'm a joke.” He motions to his glass for another drink. The innkeeper raises an eyebrow, popping open a new bottle. “Those birds don't care about me, what I'm doing for the collective.” The drunk gnome leans in very close to the innkeeper across the bar “For all of us!” He picks up his stool, plopping himself back down, wildly wobbling, nearly falling down. “It doesn't even matter to them, it's like why bother.” He thinks about ordering another drink but thinks better of it. Feeling a little better he pays his tab. He stumbles over to the corner to remove his dark red cloak from the coat rack.

Looking around at his empty tavern Irvington the innkeeper throws his thin coat over his shoulders. Placing a hand on the drunk gnome's back Irvington kindly offers; “C'mon friend, lets get you home.” They leave the inn together.

    -

Chloe and her party make their way along the well maintained roads of the Gnomish Collective. No one greets Chloe as she crosses the border. They do not encounter anyone along the road until they arrive at the outskirts of a small market town. Local merchants are friendly selling supplies at fair prices They instruct Chloe on the optimal route to B'll Draconis using the roads. She and her companions are offered a home cooked meal and a few rooms for the night free of charge. The merchant explains that more than half the population is on caravan. In the morning Chloe departs, following the route given to her. She rides all day, crossing the Tempestan bridge bathed in orange light as the sun is setting.

His step is steady and without hesitation. Outside, his muscles tense and he resists the urge to stretch after the long ride. He wears light gray robes with a dark gray ornamental cape, the symbol of the Sage hangs on a silvery chain around his neck: A palm sized sphere with an engraved opened scroll in front of three stars, which are arranged in a triangle around the scroll at the positions of 10, 12 and 2 o'clock, the one at 10 o'clock being encircled. Head and face are perfectly shaved, the three stars are tattooed onto his forehead in the same pattern as on the symbol. Glyphs are slowly swirling around his head. He wears no visible weapons, and only carries a small leathery bag, looking like that of a scribe. Outside, he searches the area with his eyes to see whether the delegation should head somewhere.

"It sure is a lovely view, isn't it, Ebon?"

Chloe chuckles in deflection when Ebon responds with sarcasm, asking how can she even see with her hair covering her eyes.

Her plump figure seems ill suited for the black angular armor she wears, much less riding on a black and white charger in front of a small but respectable party, but she pays little heed to any stares at her person; the stars know she's survived enough of them on the trip here.

Ebon doesn't wear a bit on his bridle but for all his dour nature, he dutifully carries his rider where she wants; in this case she steers him towards the closest constable or guardsman, bringing the horse to a stop a respectable distance away before she raises her unarmed hand up in a gesture of peace.

    Lucien Battlesong

The hour is late. Over the last ten days Lucien Battlesong has completed a daunting gauntlet of formal parties, official gatherings, horse and lizard races, tournaments, diplomatic engagements leading to the signing of a treaty, lectures, and numerous cultural demonstrations. Advanced Liaison Specialist Proxima Piccadilly has organized a flurry of non-stop appointments. Each day is meticulously scheduled, Lucien's hosts attempt to cram the most activity into every day, leaving little opportunity to rest. Proxima Piccadilly remains constantly at Lucien's side. Proxima introduces Lucien to Lady Mila Darkwood and to other foreign delegates when they are gathered at the same event. The number of attendees grows larger as the week progresses. The last event was attended by delegates from every major and minor power on Kevana but one.

Upon returning to his embassy Lucien is greeted by a courier waiting with a private message from Dr Gefrum G Gefrum. The courier, wearing a bicorn hat and a long blue tunic, adorned with the official courier's medal hands Lucien a letter. The letter states a date has been scheduled in the near future for an expedition into the second world. Further details are given. All future engagements are canceled. Over the following days Lucien will oversee the preparations for his expedition.

    -

The hour is early on the day of the expedition. Standing in the embassy's courtyard, Lucien watches as Jotrana workers load carts. The burly peasants strain to stack one heavy chest on top of another. Every inch of space is used as the carts are loaded with supplies. A small bird of prey perched in a tropical tree cries out, watching a small rodent scurry about. Flapping it's powerful wings the bird pounces upon the small mammal, devouring it in front of Lucien. Dr Gefrum and several other scientists are escorted into the embassy's courtyard by a member of the staff.

Dr Gefrum bows to Lucien, watching preparations progress before speaking.
“A historic day for all Kevana, I can feel our names being written in the histories. It is my sincere hope, this new land provides opportunity for all. I hope to avoid the spirit of competition that has engulfed Kevana. Send your support staff as soon as they are ready to the dragon gate. They will need to time establish a base camp at the ruins. We're not exactly sure what we're going to encounter out there, so we will proceed with caution. The lord mayor will summon all senior delegates when preliminary work is complete.”

Conversation briefly stops as a large black zeppelin appears in the sky. It slowly turns, making it's way to the landing zone. Dr Gefrum excuses himself as he will be needed shortly at the landing zone. He creates a dimensional door to his desired location, departing with a wave.

    William Draconis

William Draconis has been invited to multiple boring events over the last two weeks. After taking up residence at the Kintari embassy, his minder, Lily L'nya has constantly encouraged William, along with the rest of the Kintari delegation to attend special events. She has attempted to fill every hour of William's schedule with one dull diplomatic function after another. It soon became obvious that William's personal Advanced Liaison Specialist was never going to leave him alone. William found an opportunity to slip away, renting a room and taking up a bar stool at an inn catering to foreign travelers.

The inn is named the ambassador, it serves decent human food and a variety of powerful drink. The regular patrons are delightful people from all over Kevana. They are amazed by tricks performed by William and his "pet" squirrel. William finds many friendly people to share a drink. William remains undetected for days until an official in a bicorn hat and a long blue tunic approaches. He wears a large silver star medal upon his breast. “Official Courier” it reads in the gnomish script. The official walks next to William, clearing his throat he asks; “William Draconis?”

William looks up from his mug of ale, suspicion clear. "Depends on who's asking. If it's from my mother, I don't want it.". He drums his claws on the well polished oaken table while talking. "Otherwise, leave it on the table."

He then turns and asks one of the barmaids for a refill for his drink.

"And if it's about Ash Hill, let the Lord Mayor for the Day know I am ready."

    William Draconis

The courier places the letter on the bar next to William Draconis. He waits patiently for William to order another drink. The old gnome stands silently with a slightly unpleasant expression waiting for William to pick up the letter and begin reading. Once this is accomplished the courier greets his friend behind the bar before leaving the establishment.

William receives another drink from the friendly blonde human barmaid. Her name is M'bella, when they first met she told William she was also from Kintara. This isn't true, it's just a game she likes to play with new customers. M'bella has excellent knowledge of Kintara's geography and people allowing her to get away with the ruse.

When William reads the letter he discovers it is from Dr Gefrum Gefrum, giving William all the relevant details on the start of the expedition. The courier never revealed William's location to anyone, maintaining the courier's vow of secrecy. At the appropriate date and time William Draconis and his companions find Dr Gefrum waiting for them by the dragon gate, ready to teleport the whole group to Ash Hill.

    Kyris

Kyris spends his days in quiet contemplation and study. The Illumians have set up a series of private residence by claiming an entire wing of the ornate Akshasa embassy. Lady Sindra allows delegates from the Akshasa republic to perform the tedious work of attending diplomatic functions. She informs Kyris of a recently received letter. It contains the date the expedition is to be launched and other details. The following day Lady Sindra invites Kyris to sit in on a private meeting with Dr Gefrum Gefrum and lord mayor Bebe B'yer.

Seated around a large table, Dr Gefrum goes into detail about how a routine mission to expand the crypts at Ash Hill turned into the discovery of the age. “Ash hill is full of caves, for as long as recorded history gnomes living on Ash Hill buried their dead in these caves. As time marched on, the caves began to fill up. This lead to a series of new caves being dug, with this process repeating itself every few centuries. Occasionally while digging a new tunnel, workers would accidentally connect to an already existing network of caves. Over time this created a vast network of catacombs under the village. In our most recent effort to expand the network we tunneled into a very old stone complex buried deep under the hill.”

Dr Gefrum has long believed an unknown ancient civilization once inhabited the area around Ash Hill. The complex was evidence this could be true, Dr Gefrum was sent at once to the site to investigate. The ruins confirmed everything Dr Gefrum believed. Upon exploration of the massive stone complex Dr Gefrum discovered countless humanoid bones very few of them belonging to gnomes. Carved into the walls of the complex are numerous violent images. The images, while faded mostly depict humanoids devoured by snakes. Most of the pillars throughout the complex are carved to appear as if they are wrapped by serpents. At the center of the complex several colossal statues stand. They are made to resemble anthropomorphic serpent women, their heads reach the ceiling providing support to the massive stone block overhead. Dr Gefrum provides several sketches of the images, pillars, and various artifacts found within the complex. (1) Handing over the papers he declares; "It's a fascinating glimpse into their culture."

He speaks again; "This discovery alone would have been more than enough to mark a fitting final discovery to cap my long fabulous career. I was on top of the world. Then we discovered the staircase. It was just a simple stone staircase. As I stood at the top of it, I imagined what might await us at the bottom of those stairs. My mind could not prepare me for a greatness of such magnitude. To reach the bottom of the stairs took an impossibly long time. We're still unsure about the exact nature of the phenomenon. When we reached the bottom we realized, we were no long deep below ground but on the surface. We were inside a large stone complex. As I gazed out one of the windows in astonishment I saw trees and water and sky. I realized we were on another world." Dr Gefrum expresses his enthusiasm for the upcoming expedition as he excuses himself to make another appointment.

At the appointed time Lady Sindra, Kyris and the rest of the Cabal of Cydonia assembled in B'll Draconis meet Dr Gefrum at the dragon gate. They have left their unnecessary Akshasa followers behind. Lady Sindra is focused on the knowledge this mission will provide. She contemplates the new roads to mastery such knowledge will unlock. The heavy metal door of the dragon gate slams shut. Moments later the Illumians are nearly instantaneously teleported to the Ash Hill.

Ash Hill is a fortified village sitting on top of a large heavily forested hill. It is one of the most physically remote settlements in the gnome collective. Dr Gefrum leads the party along a magically marked established trail down the hill. Gathered at the base of the hill are representatives from every nation on Kevana. The camp bustles with activity as the expedition draws near.

Dunbar Dunwick gazes skyward at an ominous sight unseen in his lifetime. A huge black zeppelin sails across the clear blue sky. On board are member of the Council of Nether, senior leaders of an aggressive fanatical theocracy. Devoted to death and dedicated to expansion. Before the treaty guaranteeing the neutrality of the collective, Nether armies terrorized the people. Forcibly converting their victims into undead minions. Stories are still shared with the young about ancestors lost to this unfortunate fate. Morals are usually weaved into these stories, giving them a semi-fictional feeling.

With a THUD the huge airship impacts the ground. Attached to the bottom of the balloon is a carriage. The carriage is made of bone, it is wrapped in dried humanoid skins. The vessel is adorned with humanoid skulls and other grotesque body parts. Dunbar glances around in nervous anticipation. For everyone assembled this is their first chance to glimpse the death worshiper's in person.

An enormous human steps out from the zeppelin. He is over eight feet tall, he wears black full plate without a helmet. His enormous head is completely bald. He carries a one-handed ax and a large metal shield. The next figure to disembark is cloaked completely in a mysterious dark robe. No part of his body is exposed to the daylight, revealing nothing of figure underneath. A thin woman dressed in fine black silk with hair so long it would fall to the ground it not pinned up. A disheveled older woman covered in boils, she wears an insane smile upon her face. A cleric of the void dressed in black robes, missing her left arm. A young wizard surrounded by an aura of living shadow is the last to leave the zeppelin.

Mayor for the day Kylon Kampek delivers the appropriate greeting for an arriving diplomatic party. He addresses the group of legendary foes showing some nervousness. He is immediately rebuffed.

The lord mayor is forcefully told by the booming eight foot warrior; “The council of Nether is not interested in good relations and cultural exchanges. We are not interested in potential scientific discovery. The council's only reason for undertaking this expedition is to assess if there are unclaimed souls living on the second world. If the world is lifeless we have no interest in its territory. However we claim the right to harvest every unclaimed soul we encounter on the other side.” He demands; “Now bring us to the location.”

Dunbar Dunwick follows the lord mayor as he agrees to escort the group to the site of the excavation. They arrive at Ash Hill through the dragon gate, making their way down the hill through the forest. Dunbar wanders off from his assigned group once he reaches base camp. He finds Dr Gefrum G Gefrum addressing a group of foreigners.

“I am not at all surprised that such a profound discovery has reached every territory on Kevana. I am delighted to see so many representatives eager to expand our collective horizons and tackle the unknown. As the group assembled is far too large to explore the complex all at once, I have decided to divide everyone into smaller groups. Each group will have a full day to explore the second world before returning to base camp. When each group has had a chance to experience the phenomenon we will cycle through again.”

Dr Gefrum divides the delegations into several groups each assigned a letter. Group A consists of the PC's and their cohorts and followers. The Knights Valarian, the Grand Duke of Bodgen, and the Council of Nether are also included in group A. Dr Gefrum invites all members of group A to follow him into the unknown.

The group enters a wide tunnel, recently constructed, the tunnel is designed to allow large animals and carts to easily pass to the location. Dr Gefrum casually remarks about how all the bones scattered around the complex have been collected and are in the process of being categorized. The party is lead through the huge cavernous rooms of the underground complex to a large stone staircase.

The stairs appear to descend approximately thirty feet to a single door at the bottom. Chloe the Blackblade along with the elves Aleandel Gerathinion, Grosvenor Silverleaf, and Vilca Hucumaripchurin are the first in the group to attempt to reach the bottom. Each walks normally down the flight of stairs. After many steps, the door at the bottom of the stairs appears as far away as it was at the top. Looking back towards the top the PC's realize they have descended hundreds of steps. The light at the top of the stairs appears distant. The staircase appears endless. As hundreds more steps are made the group can sense no progress. The light at the top of the stairs is very distant, barely visible. As thousands more steps are crossed some progress becomes apparent. The door at the bottom of the stairs inches ever closer.

Hundreds more steps follow before the door at the bottom of the stairs comes into reach of the exhausted party. Looking up to the top of the stairs, the distance traveled seems impossible. On the other side of the door is an empty stone room. The party take a well deserved moment to rest. The air is very warm and humid. Chloe looks through a large hole in the broken stone wall. She sees swirling dark clouds above her head Vilca notices an unnatural hissing noise but can not pinpoint the source. The abandoned building appears overgrown with thick vegetation.

Eventually the room fills with adventurers as everyone makes their way to the bottom of the impossibly long staircase. Dr Gefrum is the among the last to arrive at the bottom of the stairs. He gazes out in awe from behind the broken wall. He quietly whispers; “Behold, another world.” The old gnome wipes a tear from his eye.

Vilca feels less enthusiastic than the old Gnome savant. The place is obviously under the effect of a powerful magical phenomenon. What a strange staircase it was! Moreover, the Elf feels cramped in this room with so many people; and they stand for only one of the groups of explorers...where are the spacious, comforting forests of his home?
A strange hissing noise strikes his ears. The Sun Elf was about to cast a Detect Magic spell to gather intelligence about the nature of the staircase' space distorting effect, but the sound refocuses his attention. I was sent here to study the fauna and flora of this place, and it seems it begins now! This does not sound like any animal cry that I know of.

Vilcaturns towards the she-bear and the Half-Orc druid, which know more of the natural world than him.
"Tuta, Farshi, have you heard that sound? Does it remind you of any animal that lives in our forests?" They both shake their heads, intrigued as he is. Had Vilca processed that he is surrounded by dozens of other explorers, some well versed in the knowledge of the natural world, he would have thought about asking his question aloud. But Farshi is too busy calming her wolf familiar, which is stressed out by all those people, to make him notice. Similarly, Tuta tries her best ignoring the puzzled looks she is gathering from her neighbours, though she would have some difficulty admitting someone other than her would be best qualified to identify an animal sound.

Vilca then points to the southern wall.
"Time to do what we came for, then. Let us take a look at what is behind this hole down there, it seems to lead to the outside."

The Sun Elf and his squad start crawling through the crowd towards the hole, nearly colliding with the retinue of Silverleaf, if I recall correctly and Vilca finally manages to get through the wall to the other side.

William takes a moment to gather himself. Interesting is hardly the word for it. He and Squeekers had been through much, but just being on the surface of this foreign land was enough to cause a sense of vertigo.

Did they do any exploring? Those trees out there, and the sky as well. They look normal enough, but something about them seemed off. The same way an illusion was off.

William Draconis is not easily fooled by a simple trick of the eye. The staircase was disorientating, possibly nothing more than the after effects of a spell. As for the reality of a second world beneath our world, the sky overhead. A sorcerer's illusion seems a likely explanation. William moves with Squeekers through the crowded room. He must Navigate a sea of explorers then jostle for position next to the broken wall to inspect this so called second world. William positions himself at the front of the crowd next to Chloe. Endless gray clouds swirl overhead, a strong wind pelts the trees with light rain. A single drop of rain lands on William's clothing, instantly eating through the material, making a small hole.

William knows how to spot an illusion, nothing he has experienced is consistent with an arcane spell.

This robe's brand new. I can't have it in this condition William thinks to himself. Then he realizes. Acid rain. He takes a few steps back from the doorway, casting detect poison and mending on his robe. Not in that order.
