Life in Littleroot had not been bad for Welby Highhill and Violet Dunn, but it had been exceedingly mundane. With nothing to really hold them in town the childhood best friends hatched a plan to leave home, to strike out and seek their fortune. Its taken month of preparation, some folks thought the day would never come, that it had all been bluster, but today was the day that they were doing it, they were leaving home.

Violet couldn't wait to reach the big city, she'd only been a few times to the large market in Ferou but the thrum of life there was a wonder to her. Heading out of town she couldn't help but rush, she knew she'd likely miss her family but the looming adventure edged her on. And what made it all the better is that she'd convinced Welby to come with her. Best friends, adventure, what more could a girl want?

"So Welby, as much as I really do want to make it to Ferou I was thinking, if we take our time on the journey there, we could perhaps do some hunting and with any luck we won't arrive in the big city as a couple empty handed farmers." She said looking over as they walked.

Wellby smiles in spite of himself. He felt a little guilty leaving his family behind, especially with her mom so close to term on his new sibling, but the wind and sky called to him with a beckoning whisper that he could no longer ignore. And of course, there was Vi. How gray and hollow would life in Littleroot be without her...

Where she went, he went. And that was the only way.

Wellby strapped the last of Meathead's barding on and then scratched behind her floppy ears. Then, he pulled some blades of grass loose to check the breeze, sniffed the air. "C'mon, Meathead. Adventure awaits," he whispered softly into her ears. She let out a low and gentle bark in response.

Wellby nods to Violet and points toward some hills in the distance. "Just on the other side of those hills, there is a small woodlot, where an order of druids watches over a rare and special breed of avian. I've never been, but my mother told me stories of it when I was a boy. She said it was one of the most beautiful places she's ever seen. It's only slightly out of the way of the city, and would give us a safe place to camp for the night. What do you think? Should we head there?"

"Oh my, the most beautiful place she's ever seen?" Violet asks wide eyed.
"We absolutely must see it then." She says passionately.
"Will they let me in though? I can't say I really understand all of those druid-y things." She continues on thinking about it, though she starts heading more directly in that direction.

Wellby hooks his thumbs into his hide armor breastplate and shrugs. "I don't see why not. Even so, you're with me, and I'm a druid. I'll vouch for you."

Meathead sneezes and shakes her flappy lips, then wags her tail as she settles into an easy trot.

"Awe bless you Meathead." Violet giggles watching the fluffy pooch. "Okay as long as you are gonna vouch that I'm not some forest fire starting, sporting hunter who stomps on flowers I'll probably be alright." She goes on half joking. She fiddles get clothes a bit as they walk.

When Meathead approaches the hill, she emits a low, threatening growl. Wellby stiffens as well, and scans the dense shrubbery with keen eys, readying his skiprock to attack.

"Something in the shrubs..." he hisses to Violet as he and Meathead tense for battle.

Wellby:

Violet nods and draws her sword. She slinks closer to the bushes to investigate. When she spots it she freezes up looking uncomfortable.
A split second later it moves to where you make it out more clearly. It appears to be an ant, though nightmarish, the damned thing is 6 feet long!
Violet signals to you, holding up 3 fingers.

The ant you can see moves out of the brush posturing aggressively at you.

The hairs on Meathead's nape bristle, and her large, floppy lips curl back into a drooling snarl, revealing large white teeth. Her growl turns menacing as she shifts her weight in for a charge. Still, she waits patiently for Wellby's orders.

A second ant charges out from the bushes threateningly with mandibles clacking as it blines right for Meathead.

Meathead is ready for the angry insect though and her jaws clamp down on the giant ant as well.

A third and comes out next to the first, not charging into the maw of an angry dog like it's companion. It readies an attack

Welby is up.

Wellby assesses the ants quickly, trying to understand what he's seeing and remember if there is anything he learned from his parents that might help him in this battle...

Wellby is loathe to kill a creature of nature except for food, and has no intention of becoming food either. "If they will allow, I'd prefer to go around them. Killing one may draw others." He says to Violet. He clicks his tongue and shakes his reigns to indicate to Meathead that she should make a wide berth, doing a semi-circle around the ants until they are close enough to the hill to make a run for it.

In the meantime, he reconsiders his thrown weapons, knowing he will not likely be able to pick them back up. He switches to his club, raises it high in the air, and focuses on his family crest that he keeps on his chest, a simple scrimshaw amulet passed down through generations of Highhills. Swiftly and softly, so as not to incite a conflict unnecessarily, he begins to chant...

"Sure it's the same old shillelagh me father brought from our land.
And divil a man prouder than He, As he walked with it in his hand.
He'd lead the band on Holiday And twirle it round his mitt
And divil a bit we'd laught at it, Or Dad would have a fit
Sure with the same old shillelagh. Me father could lick a dozen men
As fast as they'd get up be gorry, He'd knock'em down again
And many's the time he used it on me
To make me understand, The same old shillelagh
Me father brought from our land."

The club hardened and twisted into a finely polished shillelagh with a heavy knot on the end. Along the shaft, the crest of the Highhill family was emblazoned as if it were branded in. Wellby lowers the newly enchanted weapon and smilies in spite of himself. He's always had trouble getting that spell just right, but this time, the only thing it was missing were the jute-braided handle and tassels. In all other ways, it was an exact replica of the family weapon!

Violet thrusts her rapier at the second giant ant [roll]1d20=2[/roll] damage (1d6+2)[8]
Only to have it bounce off its hard exoskeleton. She lets out a very annoyed sigh and looks over it for a weak point while she starts to circle it.

Meathead's readied attack had torn into the first giant ant, ripping a leg from its body, though she'd been hit in return. The ant clacks its mandibles menacingly and moves forward to try biting again. Once again the giant ant is successful doing another 2 damage to meathead.

So far your puppers has taken 6 points of damage...

Meathead yelps in pain. Blood trickles down her side and a soft whimper mixes in with her threatening growl. To follow Wellby's lead, Meathead adjusts her timing to match her master's.

Meathead delay's initiative to match Wellby's.

The second and third ants turns to Violet. The second one tries another bite this time against a target with less prominent teeth. But Violet pulls back from the bite easily. Though she only barely avoids the mandibles of the 3rd. "Oh man" She says sounding concerned about how much attention she's getting from these giant insects.

Welby is up

"Hyah!" With a shout, and a click of his hills, Welby send his steed into a break neck charge, while winding up his enchanted club to deal devastating damage to the ant's mandibles, hoping to discourage the vermin from continuing to attack them.

Passing by the nearest of the two ants, he swings hard, aiming for the base of the ant's segmented jawline housing those two deadly mandibles.
