Inspire courage and trip bonuses

I have a Bard playing with a wild cohort who can trip. It’s a riding dog. Can she add inspire courage to her strength check or just to the attack roll to hit? Dm said both but I was thinking it’s not exactly right.

Sadly you're right, Inspire Courage specifies that it applies to attack rolls so strength checks don't count.

Note that this does work in Pathfinder as trip uses a CMB roll, which is an attack and therefore can be boosted by IC.

By the rules, no - inspire courage doesn't work like that. You could ask your DM if they'd like to houserule it otherwise.

If you're interested, and the option is available, you could dip 1 level into the marshal from the miniatures handbook and take the "art of war" aura.
