I use braces (also known as "curly brackets") to indicate sarcasm. If there are none present, I probably believe what I am saying; should it turn out to be inaccurate trivia, please tell me rather than trying to play along with an apparent joke I don't know I'm making.

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
It's hexadecimal code (where the numbers are 0-9, then A-F for 10-16), which is used for colour values. So, that particular text colour has the Red code "C0", Green code of "FF" (or, maximum, which is why it's mainly green), and Blue code of "EE". In other words, it's a colour code that happens to spell out a word (if you take the zero as an O).

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
You already have an extended signature link - you could move stuff to there. Put quotes in a spoiler. I don't really see why you need the wink smiley. Looks like you have a couple of space lines at the top of your sig, don't see why. I also don't see the point of the images at the bottom, but I assume there is a point to them.
As far as the quotes go you could also do what I used to do and rotate quotes in and out of your signature as you feel like it. I still have a document with all the quotes I swapped in and out at different points.Last edited by Thufir; 2017-05-23 at 12:19 PM.

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
Something that puzzles me has to do with how my gaming memory works.
I started with D&D in the very late 1970's, and beyond that the antagonists were more often Giant Spiders and animated skeletons rather than the sterotypical Goblins and Orcs, my memories of the adventures are pretty dim.
By the mid 1980's I rarely got to play D&D anymore, but I did play other games, Traveller being probably the one I've played most.
I remember the adventures of those post D&D games better, but very little of the rules, except for some reason Call of Cthullu, but early D&D rules I still remember very well.
Why?

Looking at my keyboard, I believe it's f4 for me. However, unplugging it from its charger also did the trick. For some reason.

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
Is it possible that the later adventures were of higher quality and/because you weren't fretting about the mechanics of the rules so much?
Pre-4th editions of D&D are pretty infamously rules-heavy in a way which tends to suit younger brains*. After a certain point people begin to lose the motivation and, to an extent, the ability to memorise and recall all that information. In my experience older GMs are more willing to fudge or eyeball things for the sake of the game and also often prefer rules-lighter systems. So with those trends in mind it doesn't surprise me that the rules of systems you played in youur youth are what you remember but the content of the later ones is more memorable.
That might be way off base but it's the first thing that occurred to me.
*It always amuses me when organisations are inclined to simplify for the sake of attracting younger players. For children, simplicity is generally good, but adolescents tend to gravitate towards complexity in rules, even if they don't realise it.Last edited by Aedilred; 2017-05-25 at 01:09 PM.

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
It could just be because it was the first system you learned. There are several things like that for me - I remember the license plate from my first car, for example. I also have the maps to the first Legend of Zelda memorized.
As for rpg systems, I learned GURPS first, and I could probably still GM that without looking stuff up, give or take edition differences or rules my old groups didn't use much.

So, uh... what happened to RB? This has been the active thread for over five months now. I remember when we'd get through a thread in a week or two!

But seriously, what's with the slowdown? Is RB gradually dying? Are we doomed to drift away, pixel by pixel, subsumed into an endless sea of bits, drifting through the lower reaches of the internet, forever?!

I'd like to direct everyone to Rule 6 in the OP, though it's not a particularly big deal to me.

Re: WarKitty's Feline Frenzy Random Banter #216
Well, first off, they're discussing why RB is moving slow nowadays compared to a few years back, not just stating that it's moving slow. Second, these are the RB rules, not the GitP rules, and they're mostly a compendium of things which become disruptive if done regularly. The two sentence rule is broken all the time, for example, yet people don't really care, because it happens seldom enough that it's safely embedded in the rest of the banter. If it isn't a big deal to you, and doesn't look like it's a big deal to anyone else, it's probably more disruptive to point out the rule than to just let the discussion flow along.
Not really, the posts which did plow through a thread in a pair of weeks (or a month) was of a type which didn't fit anywhere else, hence "Random Banter". Thufir's got it pretty right, though one thing I'd like to add is that a lot of the "older" people (in sense of when they joined RB) did stick around for longer than most "younger" people, which lead to a growing "age gap" as time progressed. In time, the crowd of oldtimers saw their herd thinned to the point where RB no longer felt like being in a room full of your friends, and they started to frequent it more and more seldomly, thus accelerating the effect. After a certain point, there weren't enough new topics and random life events to discuss to sustain the rapid conversation, and it died down to this much more low-key state.
Metaphorically speaking, RB is like a nuclear reactor. Below a certain threshold, there isn't enough posters to keep a conversation going, and posting simply happens at the rate of natural decay. Cross that point, though, and the conversation will sustain itself, with topics becoming more interesting simply because more people discuss them. Add a little more people and the chain reaction goes out of control, creating content at a faster pace than you can read it (there are rumors about a thread which ended in a single day, but I wasn't around at that time).
Also, I can't rule out the possiblity that today's Playgrounders are less interested in the form of social interaction which was commonplace back then. Not only RB has waned, but the Avatar Theme Week is officially dead and we couldn't keep the You! thread alive either. The same thing seems to be going on in the Arts and Crafts subforum, where the OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase is living on the border to undeath and Iron Avatarist is plain dead and buried. I'm pretty sure it's probably the same thing in the other subforums as well.
I must say I miss that time, but with my life so much busier since I finished Uni (or even since I got into the latter half of it), there isn't really time for the hours of typing posts which was a daily activity back then. Or drawing avatars and scribbles. Or making up nature poetry on the spot because the evening had gotten late and I had nothing better to do than sit and stare out the window while enjoying not feeling like doing anything.
ION:
Yesterday was a day off work, so most people stayed home today as well. However, due to corporate burocracy, I'm stuck with the worst of two employment contracts and didn't feel like spending one of my rather scarce (by Swedish standards) vacation days on today, so I worked as normal. It was delightfully calm at work, although still a surprising number of people around. I had ironed out all the bugs I'd intended for now on Wednesday, so today was the day I going to do a pretty build and just deploy it on the rig where it's supposed to run.
Turned out that today was the day of "But this worked two days ago, why isn't it working now?!", as I uncovered two rather nasty bugs which had completely failed to trigger before. Good thing was they were pretty easy to fix once I turned my attention to them, and in the end of the day, I managed to finish typing up my last emails and gather my stuff exactly on time to catch my bus with some frantic running.
Now it's time for weekend. I need that.
