It's like Castle Heterodyne. . . ? I hadn't thought about that--or about the implications that Paris might have been built with some Heterodyne tech (and what's their power source? Does the Seine work as well as the Dyne?).

I'd sort of hoped the master settled for boxing them up (despite the reddish, liquidy stains) but comparing it to Der Kestle pretty much kills that.

And . . . am I the only one repressing the HORRIFIC image of the Master and Terebithia's nonexistant (I hope) child? Makes Agatha's theoretical kiddies look like the Peanuts Gang.

I should point out we have no idea who Colette's mother is/was...

    Her first name is Terebithia???

Zola seems happy. That can't be good.

I wonder why Colette triggered on the comparison of the MoP's power to Castle Heterodyne. Is there a story there?

Zola being happy means bad things are imminent. The Master being out of sorts means he is vulnerable. Colette seems shocked to think her dear Papa is acting like a Heterodyne.

Terabithia? I'm sorry, but there is NOTHING remotely Narnia-like in grandmother Sturmvarous. On the other hand, "dour old wizard" and "scheming flirt" suggest they get along well enough.

OTOH, it is a sign of Sparky Magic that she's strong enough to hold up even his hand, let alone provide significant support. He's got to be 10 times her mass.

It's more likely the Foglios were thinking of the 70's young-adult novel Bridge to Terabithia. Although the author of that noted that she probably subconsciously lifted the name from Lewis.

There's not much about Grandma that reminds me of a little girl too well-read for her community, either.

Well, unless something is really weird it is highly likely she once was a little girl.

when the master was young... The master is atleast 140 years older than her. The master was active during the time of the storm king which was 200 years ago. Assuming he was as young as 20 years old back then(though he could be much older than that), he would be 220 years old at a minimum today. Terebitha is probably more in the range of 80 years old. Even when she was a little girl, he was an old man.

Yes. The novel is a Newbery Medal novel, with all that implies, but the trailers sold the movie as a fantasy adventure. As usual when trailers lie about the tone of the movie, it did not do well.

Was that a part of it? I would have thought the book was known enough that very few people would go into that not expecting how it went.

All I can say is that I personally was unaware of the book. That said, tvtropes' page does mention it as well ("Never Trust a Trailer: Quite possibly the most baffling case in the history of cinema. The trailer for the 2007 film made it seem like a Narnia-esque fantasy movie where Terabithia was real."), and that description matches my impression at the time.

He said that there was correlation, not cause. It would make sense that if marketing didn't expect the movie to do well, they would misrepresent it, hoping to draw additional people in. I would guess that the movies where Sony quoted a reviewer they invented didn't do very well, either. Keep in mind that if marketing can make a movie lose less money than it otherwise would have, that's still a marketing success. Sometimes they have little to work with.

BTW, I hadn't heard of the book, either.

But then you're also driving away people who might actually like the movie as it is, not as it's portrayed in the ads. I didn't know about the book either, but I could imagine fans of the book could have been repulsed by it being made into a Narnia ripoff, as the ads portrayed. And the first Narnia-ripoff-lover to see it could tell their Narnia-ripoff-loving friends that it sucks as a Narnia ripoff and now they're not going to see it either.

Eh, maybe there's a magical amount of lying about your movie to sucker in people who aren't really interested in seeing it while not repelling those who are.

The most obvious next part of plan involves tiny wasps. A magician tends to have main plan in play while distracting audiences eyes.

Having the master show off his power might also be for minion to learn his secrets by watching him in action, so he can be replaced with similar absolute power later.

Agatha just announced her presence by murdering a geister, so no. MoP would have to assume that was misdirection...which is just ironic enough to be plausible, since that's what Zola's actually doing. But on the face of it, at least, this scene does not give rise to significant potential for misunderstanding.
