Namia

Namia continues to flee in panic from the unnatural horrors, but tries to shout "Fiends of bone are at the park! Attacking and pillaging! Summon the guards!"

The Park

Scarecrow... transforms into something fast, probably. That thingy with the like 50' land speed, perhaps. Does he use his anklet to get away without provoking? Hm, nah, with only a 10' range, it wouldn't help much, and I hesitate to declare characters using limited resources (such as charges per day) unless they say so. So he just zooms south past the first devil, and then west, provoking from both devils as he goes! And the bone devil hits him with a critical threat, which does not confirm. Scarecrow takes 6 damage (before DR, which fully applies) as the bone devil bites him.


Doldor uses his own anklet to bjorn out of the igloo, and transforms into a roper!


Eleanor skids to a stop and backtracks south and east a bit! I judge she is able, barely, to Run. The bone devil fails to bite her as she flees!


Shian flees, scooting directly away from the devil as his psicrystal hits the first devil with acid! With a good roll, the bone devil swipes him with its teeth as he flees! Shian takes 13 damage!


Namia, out of sight of the source of her terror, starts yelling for help, tries to summon guards to help! She will probably succeed in a couple rounds!


The first devil squints at Doldor, the one remaining threat. Does he call off his minions harassing the fleers and concentrate on Doldor, who has made himself a conspicuous target? Or was he sent to kill, y'know, everyone? Turns out the latter, he gestures and gives some telepathic commands to his minions and they carry out his orders. First, though, the devil attempts to break free of Doldor's irritating kelpstrand! But, it is too tight, he does not break free. He could teleport away, but the kelp would almost certainly come with him. So he... does no additional things.

Bone devil #1 switches targets to the conveniently stabbable Doldor! It roars at him, but he is unafraid! It full-rounds him! But none of its attacks penetrate his natural armor!

Bone devil #2 teleports south of Eleanor, to irritatingly harass her some more!

Bone devil #3, directed with precision by the first devil, teleports out of his ice dome to bother Scarecrow, where it roars at him! He resists this devil's terror, but is still panicked by the other one!

Bone devil #4 successfully concentrates to avoid Doldor's AoOs, and teleports to just beyond Shian, making him do a U-turn too!

Doldor

Doldor briefly considers attacking as many of the devils as possible, but he has a bit of an understanding as to how they operate. The bone devils are dangerous, but they're here due to a pact with the ice devil. If he kills the ice devil, then, or hurts it enough to drive it away...

That logic in mind, he unleashes a barrage of tendrils at the ice devil, dragging it closer, then he lays into it with his teeth and claws.

Okay, this is a lot, and I'm going to try and be as by-the-book as possible. Doldor goes before any of the devils, so I think this is all kosher.

His "Strand" attacks are Ranged Touch attacks, so he provokes from the bone devil next to him. The ice devil is not in melee range of anything, though, so he doesn't take a penalty for firing into melee.

Strand attacks versus the Ice Devil: (1d20+10)[28] (1d20+10)[12] (1d20+10)[25] (1d20+10)[25] (1d20+10)[28] (1d20+10)[18]

For each strand that hits, the ice devil, it makes a Fort save, DC 22, or it takes 2d8 points of Strength damage. It's also dragged 10ft closer to Doldor. It threatens no spaces and doesn't get Dex to AC, due to being grappled, so he can keep firing strands even if it's been dragged close.

He'll then bite and claw at it (to little avail, thanks to DR). He gets +4 on the Bite if the Devil was hit by a Strand this turn.

The Park

Scarecrow books it south! The bone devil bites him! Scarecrow takes 8 damage (before DR)!


Doldor engages in a mighty whappowhappowhappowhappowhappowhappo upon the first devil! He hits all but once! (He'd miss on the last one too, except for the grapple.) Unfortunately, his target is currently rocking a +19 to Fortitude saves, so he needs to roll very poorly indeed to be strength damaged. He fails none of the Fortitude saves. The drag effect appears to occur on each subsequent round. That said, I'll give it to you, the creature is dragged 10' to Doldor, who claws and bites at it! (It's also unclear to me whether the Weakness effect happens only when a target is grabbed (verb) by a strand, or on every round a target has the condition of being grabbed by a strand. I'll probably allow the latter.) Doldor manages to (barely) hit it with both claws, but not his bite (even with the +4), doing a little bit of damage!


Eleanor scoots NE, provoking an attack that misses!


Shian and his psicrystal bounce away from devil 4 (provoking an attack which misses) -- the psicrystal spits upon the devil, damaging it -- and head NW!


Namia keeps yelling for a guard! Eventually, a couple guards with crossbows and rapiers show up and starts trying to calm her down to get her to explain the situation better!


The first devil points at Doldor. And growls! Doldor is actually extremely close to being terrified, but swallows his fear! And, concentrating (barely), he hits Doldor point-blank with a cone of cold! Doldor extremely dodges, and therefore Doldor only takes 29 damage!

Bone devil #1, recognizing Doldor's thick hide will allow no attempts to penetrate it, attempts instead to grapple! Doldor makes a strand AoO at him! Doldor strikes the creature with a strand, but very resists the strength damage! As the AoO did not do damage, the creature proceeds in the grapple attempt! The devil grasps Doldor's trunk! But Doldor manages, very barely, to throw the grasping bony creature off him!

Bone devil #2, called back to bother Doldor, dismisses his ice dome so as to make more room, and moves back northwest!

Bone devil #3 teleports to the other side of Doldor!

Bone devil #4 also teleports to the other side of Doldor! And roars terrifyingly! But again, Doldor, though greatly afear'd, is not panicked!

Namia, panting and talking fast, tries to explain the situation to the guards "Fiends of bone attacked us while we were resting at the park. Four of them I think, maybe more, out of nowhere! THey just appeared. They forced me to retreat... We have to save the people! My friends, my allies!" She says and points the way for them.

As soon as Eleanor is far enough away to slow from a run to a jog she does so. She attempts to work out what the fastest route to Mario's would be.

Doldor

Doldor needs a reprieve. He shouts a word of earth and wind, drawing on his deepened connection to the Plane of Elemental Earth. Rock and debris fills the air around the devils next to him, and though they may be powerful, they still need to breathe. Meanwhile, his roper-strands continue to try and drain the strength from the ice devil and the bone devil he's latched onto.

All six Strands will try and Strength drain (Fort DC 22). I'm going to hope you're willing to be gracious about the reading of how the Str drain works (and you can make it up to us by making us fight a Roper later ).

Doldor will then Concentrate on casting Wall of Sand defensively. He automatically succeeds (DC 20, (1d20+19)[35]).

He gets 12 5ft squares to work with (CL for Conjuration spells is 12). He'll cover all of gg, the space between gg and 11, and the two squares of 44 adjacent to him.

The Park

Scarecrow zooms away in a southly direction!


Doldor sucks strength from the devils! The first devil actually manages to roll two natural 1s, and is thus sucked of considerable strength! The one bone devil is also sucked of strength. Then Doldor concentrates on a wall of sand, surrounding himself with sand! He stacks the squares 10' high so the 9'-12' tall devils can't just see and attack over them, halving the number of squares he has to work with, but that's okay because he only specified 7 squares anyway!


Eleanor zooms in an eastly direction, vaulting the fence around the park and ducking into the alleyways, where she loses sight of the monsters! The fastest route to Mario's is... it's like a mile or two south and a bit east from here.


Shian and his psicrystal fly westward, out of the park, into the buildings, and are no longer in sight of the monsters!


Namia explains the situation to the guards, who nod and head into the park to investigate!


The first devil attempts to break free of the kelp's grapple, and does quite well, but the kelp does even better, and the devil remains grappled.

Bone devil #1 tries to grapple Doldor! Doldor's AoO bite fails to penetrate the creature's tough hide! He grabs Doldor! Doldor tries successfully (barely, only because of the Strength damage) to break his grip!

Bone devil #2 charges Doldor with a grapple (which I'm pretty sure is a thing you can do)! He successfully grasps Doldor! But Doldor breaks his grasp!

Bone devil #3 tries the same thing! He grabs Doldor, and this one manages to keep a very firm hold on dwarfy! Doldor is grappled and takes 6 damage (but auto-succeeds the Concentration check to maintain concentration on the wall of sand)! The devil moves all up into Doldor's space! (This doesn't say it breaks the grip of the six strands on the two devils, so it doesn't, he's still got 'em stranded.)

Bone devil #4 isn't benefited by being within the wall of sand, so it forces its way back out of said wall, barely making it the 5' all the way out.

With a suddenly clarity of mind, Shian wonders what the numerous hells he's running from. He's faced worse than this with his allies and prevailed! His allies!

Whipping around in a high speed turn, Shian steels himself and flies at top speed back towards the fight and his comrades who might still be in danger!

Shicrystal taps Shian with a bit more healing in the meantime.

If he can just do a little more damage, he might convince the devils that he's too much trouble to deal with and drive them away.

Scarecrow continues southwards, vaults the fence, and scuttles into the alleyways and buildings.


Doldor tries to break the bone devil's grapple! And succeeds by 1 point, breaking free of the grapple and shoving the monster off him! Meanwhile, he tries to suck strength! The bone devil resists its suck by a couple points, and the first devil very resists all four sucks!


Eleanor heads towards Mario's! She reaches the Home Road, and it's a pretty straight shot down there so she could run, but no, it'd take about 6 minutes to run, and a person can only run for 1-2 minutes at a time, so you're right, Hustle is necessary. So, it'll be about a 10 minute hustle. Assuming she doesn't change her mind and come back, the fight will probably be over long before she gets to Mario's.


Shian cures himself of his terror, reverses course, and Runs back towards the battlefield!


Namia still cannot technically take any actions. She does, however, try to find more guards!


The first devil heaves a sigh from within the sand wall, succeeds at his Concentration checks, and greater teleports away! From within the wall, he doesn't Spot Shian coming back, so he teleports in a pretty much random direction -- in this case, southwest. As he teleports more than 50' away, this definitely breaks the grip of the 5 strands on him, leaving said strands free to target other foes.

All four bone devils, judging this the only tactic that could at all plausibly work, try to grapple Doldor! All four succeed at their touch attacks! #1 and #2 beat Doldor at their grapple checks, #3 and #4 fail. But Doldor is now being grappled twice over and takes 2 and 9 damage! (What's more obnoxious than a one-on-one grapple? a grapple involving more than two combatants! ugh!)


The town guards reach the battleground, and they point at the ice domes and the devils and the roper, and the first devil takes note of them.

Yeah, It breaks her heart, but Eleanor has no reason to believe the devil's couldn't just make her run away again. Besides, is she even valuable of changing her mind yet? Those devils were pretty scary. She continues to hustle towards Mario's. Let her know when this is all over, ok? If she's lucky there might be some bodies left she could pay a cleric to raise.

Doldor

Doldor has reached his limits, in terms of how many devils he's willing to personally deal with. He undoes his Wildshape, which doesn't make him any less grappled; but it does restore his magic items to functionality. He growls at the devils through his Bite of the Weretiger jaws, still angry. "This wasn't a good idea. We're going to remember this."

Then he vanishes with a small pop.

He reappears ten feet away, inside the cover of the ice dome, crouching low. He isn't sure if they have a way of detecting him, but he really only needed to buy himself a moment's reprieve.

I'mm'a let Doldor's one attached strand do the thing as a free action before he de-wildshapes. Bone devil #1 fails his Fortitude save and is virtually crippled by another 8 points of Strength damage, leaving him at a grand total of 5.

Then Doldor de-wildshapes and teleports into the ice dome!


Eleanor continues to hustle towards Mario's and will continue to do so until further notice!


Shian flying-Runs back to the battlefield, angling sort of towards the first devil! I was going to wait for Rizban because I thought he could get within 30' for his psicrystal to spit, but that was because I hadn't done the math yet. But now Shian is back on the battlefield and can do stuff in the coming round!


Namia continues to search for more guards or a guard post!


The first devil tries to break free of the kelp (failing to do so) while he looks intently at the guards.

Bone devil #1 frowns bonefully. Not capable of accomplishing much with so much strength damage, he recieves leave from his employer to depart the battlefield, and blinks out to elsewhere.

Bone devil #2 -- or the first devil, or one of the other devils, they're all in constant communication -- successfully recognizes the effect of an anklet of translocation, and deduces that with such short range Doldor must have teleported into one of the domes. At random, he happens to pick the southern dome to teleport into to search for Doldor. And he sees Doldor, and communicates to his companions that he has found Doldor. And, as he has appeared within 5' of Doldor, he uses his free action to yell terrifyingly at Doldor! But Doldor resists, and is now immune to all of the devils' fear effects.

Bone devil #3 and #4 subsequently teleport into the dome to menace Doldor.


The guards frown, discuss the situation amongst themselves, and do nothing. (Perhaps the devils are telepathically communicating with the guards?)

Doldor makes one final attempt to ward off further problems. He speaks firmly, his eyes tracking between the devils. "You got pretty lucky, affecting my allies with your fear. Tell your ice devil boss that we're going to be ready for him next time. Spells and weapons to overcome his protections. We're some of the only mortals running around who have the power to permanently kill you. Keep that in mind."

Then he puts his hand to his belt, and vanishes with a thunderous crack.

Seeing none of his allies, only one devil, and a small patrol of guardsmen, Shian wings over towards the guards and bides his time.

The Park

Doldor concentrates and disapiffles, stepping out of a rift in reality within the outer walls of the monastery! A cenobite, tending the sunflowers and dandelions and butterfly bushes in the garden, glances up, gives him a nod, and returns to his work -- Doldor is known enough that he can find his own way into the monastery to find the Abbot.


Eleanor is no longer panicked! She continues on towards Mario's.


Shian flits over towards the guards!


The first devil tries to break free of the kelp. He fails. I haven't been tracking rounds on the kelp, but it's gotta be pretty close to done by now (being as Namia got Fear'd near the same time the kelp was cast, and the duration on Namia's fear is down to 2/13 and the duration on the kelp was 10), so I'm gonna say the kelp ends on Doldor's upcoming turn anyway!

The three bone devils splort out of the ice dome and start looking around. But Shian, despite being laden with a crystal and some visible soulmelds and items that make him distinctively not a normal sparrow, manages to blend in with the local trees anyway!


The guards frown and look at each other, wide-eyed, intimidated by the awesome might of the devils. They point southwards. But Namia has kept moving around in search of more guards, so their directions won't quite let the devils pinpoint her.

Scarecrow's panic ends!


The devils bamf southwards to the general vicinity of Scarecrow and Namia, but the city is so chaotically built that the PCs can easily lose themselves from the devils.

The devils eventually give up the search. (They're on the same side as the guards, as the guards serve a Crown that serves Quasxthe, same as the devils, but that might not necessarily remain true if the devils keep terrifying civilians. Not that level 2 swashbucklers and fighters stand a chance against these guys, but the devils don't necessarily want to cause an Incident.) They teleport away.


The wall of sand and the walls of ice all eventually end.

For surviving the encounter, Eleanor, Namia, Doldor, Shian, and Scarecrow gain 900xp each! By my calculations, Scarecrow levels up to 11!

Eleanor and Namia reconvene at Mario's!


Eleanor sends in her requests, and soon the teleportation circle delivers an elegantly-spiderwebby note with some offered items and prices. It does transpire that he has a CL10 cloak of bravery potion (for 1500gp, I believe -- Mario does not have a Paladin crafting cheap potions for him), a CL7 resist energy potion (for 700gp, I believe), a regular potion of fly (750gp), and I think he'll pay 1000gp for the Gauntlets of Fortunate Striking.

Augment Crystals can be installed in weapons or armor and switched out as necessary (there's a separate list of weapon augment crystals and armor augment crystals -- mind cloaking is for armor). Least crystals can be installed in equipment that is at least Masterwork, Lesser crystals can be installed in equipment that is at least +1 magical, and Greater crystals can be installed in equipment that is at least +3 magical (looking only at the actual enhancement bonus, not the effective bonus -- which is to say, a +1 Flaming Shocking Bohemian-Ear-Spoon could only take a Lesser crystal, not a Greater one, despite being priced as if it were +3).

Namia is wearing a +1 Mithral Chain Shirt, so she can use up to a Lesser armor crystal.

Namia buys 10 potions of protection from evil for a total of 500gp.


The Magic Item Merchant Who Sold Shian His Soulstone

If I recall correctly (based on what I said in that OOC note), there's not really anybody who can both craft magic items and shape incarnum, so Shian had to collaborate with the guy he found to make the items he wanted. So he'll have to spend 2 and 5 days (respectively) helping to craft the crown and hands soulstones, at which point they can be sold to him for 2,300gp and 3,500gp. Correct me if I'm misremembering how we did it last time.

EDIT: And yes, the spectacles can have a regular +2 enhancement bonus to Int added to them for 4,000gp and 2 days, by the same or a different crafter. They don't need Shian's help to do that -- although they do look surprised at the spectacles' exiting enchantment, saying "I have no Quasxthe-damned idea how I would replicate this weird nauga-dung if you wanted me to. In fact, it's so weird that I'm not absolutely certain I can add anything new without breaking what's already there." Still, they seem competent, it'd probably be only a let's say 2% chance of breaking the existing enchantment when they try to add the new one.

Cold fury burns in the crusader's eyes, but behind that, shame. It is almost too much for her that she should have quit the fight whilst her friends were in peril.

Mario successfully identifies #157 the steel necromancy flask. He doesn't return an identification of what it is, of course, because Eleanor didn't pay for that, but he does offer 1,050gp for it.

#158 The grue spell objects are worth somewhat less than a scroll, as they can be used like a scroll in one way but not the other. 206.25gp for the collection.

I don't remember if 500 is the actual value or the sell price on #160 the blood scabbard. I'll be generous and say it's the sell price.

Doldor

Doldor takes a few minutes to heal himself and to be on guard, should the devils have a way to find him. Once he's fairly confident that they don't know where he is, he finds a nice secure room to lock himself in; preferably a basement or a room with a stone floor.

He'll meditate until the morning, still prepared for a fight. If a fight doesn't come, he'll prepare three notes, and give them to three animal messengers. He'll call up three happy little birds, giving each of them a rolled up note to carry to a different location.

He begins the meditation process to call up an animal companion again, with renewed focus and fervor. He asks nature to give him an ally with the strength to see him through the dangers that lie ahead.

Namia blushes a bit at the sudden hug and pats Eleanor's head awkwardly as she tries to reassure her "Let's have faith in them. I sent some guards that way, so at the very least they may have helped a bit. We should head back to the park for now, find out what happened. Okay? I am sure Doldor could probably get everyone out of there if things were going bad like he did at the temple and he is wise enough to know when a fight is lost."

Eleanor

Eleanor accepts Mario's offer for the items. She gives 551.25gp to Namia and keeps 551.25gp for herself. The remaining 1653.75 she keeps in trust for Scarecrow, Shian and Doldor.

"That battle will be well over by now. If things went badly, we don't want to chance running into the demons there. We should use the time we have to prepare more. If the others got away, all of them can move as the birds and know where to look for us. I have a few more things I think will help, but I need to visit a weaponsmith."

I'd like Exogenesis to be reforged with Darksteel, 1500gp, adds +1 electricity damage. (Aware this may take a few days in game).
