The Black Shingle Fiasco

Looking around the desolated street, Avita notices a reasonably safe position: a mostly intact stone house. The door is hanging ajar and the glass windows are shattered, but it appears structurally sound and empty save for some broken furniture.

The wall, and it's assaulters, are 50 feet away.

Eric still listens and looks for anything unusual.

Avita fast-steps forward and touches Eric on the shoulder. "Drow. Get the civis into the house." A quick snap of the arm toward the building. "Then start shooting from the window. I'll hold the door. Silvet, don't rush them. Let them come to us and be a nasty surprise. If they're immune to your breath we don't want to find that out after you're surrounded.

Sarim, Blue-Eyes, I'd appreciate you guarding my pretty little assets-" she takes up a position ready to back into the doorway after all the gnomes have gone in. "But do as suits. Chop 'em with the choppy thing. You know."

Actions: Move with the group, have a breath attack readied for if/when the demons arrive.

Silvet nods, and tells the civilians No one stand in front of me-I breathe fire, and I don't want you getting burned.

Sarim readies his axe for combat and nods. "Choppin' may as well be my middle name."

"Sarim Choppin' Blackaxe. Sounds like a song. Let's write it tonight before we get too sozzled." mutters Avita, notching an arrow and leveling her bow. "Everyone where they want to be?"

The mercifully quiet civilians scurry into the building, crouching as far from the door as they can manage. They're clearly terrified, but perhaps weeks of living in this war zone has given them the survival skills many city-dwellers lack.

Sword drawn, Olidar takes up a position by the door. "Be wary. I've fought these things before. They're not the brightest, but those claws can mince you in moments."

Taking a careful look around the building, in the back room Eric notices a small door leading to an alley.

Andras grabs her halberd and sets herself up in front of the group, bracing the butt of the weapon against the ground.

"Let us do this"

Eric brings out his shortbow.

The demons are continuing their assault on the wall, obvious to your presence. As you watch, one manages to clamber onto the wall, and begins clawing at the guards, while another takes a pike through it's throat and slumps to the ground, dark-green blood leaking onto the cobblestones.

Someone shoot them or something-we can't let them keep attacking the wall.

Eric approaches 60 ft. He shoots the demon with his shortbow.

Seeing Eric hasn't taken up a position at the window, Avita ducks inside and opens fire through it herself. More to give the civilians a sense that someone's in there with them than any desire for personal safety. Honest.

Avita's arrow flies out of the house's window, while Eric fires from outside. The former misses, hitting the wall and bouncing off, while Eric's strikes one of the demons in the back. It arches it's back in pain, and falls from the wall with a shrill cry. For a moment it appears dead, but it soon leaps up and begins shambling towards your group, eight arms flaying. Seeing the promise of easier prey, five more of the demons descend the wall and start running toward you, close behind their wounded companion. They haven't reached you yet, but they'll be upon you in moments.

"All right! I hit one of them! Take that, demon!"

Andras tenses up, ready to skewer the incoming demons.

Avita hunkers down next to the window and begins to mutter the words of a spell. It seems to be of those ones that take a while to cast. "One. One is self. One is constant. Two. Two is complementation. Two is division. Three. Three is compartmentalisation. Three is structure. Four. Four is temperment. Four is death. Five-".

At least you rather hope she's casting a spell and not just gone insane.

Sarim grips the handle of his axe, eager to cleave through them once they set upon the place. "Come and face me, filthy demons! Sarim Blackaxe will end your wretched lives!"

"If I was a cleric, I would definately know what kind of demons we're dealing with."

With that, the demons are upon you. Seeing the exposed Eric, the wounded demon and one of it's comrades closes in on him, the flaying sea of limbs obscuring his vision of the world around. Their wild claws miss, but that only seems to enrage them further.

The rest charge the door, their many eyes filled with hunger. They don't see Silvet until it's too late, and are bathed in flame. Their fur is instantly alight, toasting their diseased flesh, but they continue their unsteady 'charge' forward, despite the bonds of supernatural flame holding them back. The first to reach door is cut down by Andras' halberd, making a high-pitched whine as it goes down, but the next reaches her, and manages to claw her left leg, leaving a long gash. The next takes a swing a Sarim, but it's weak blow is deflected by Sarim's leather armour. The last attacks Olidar, seeing him as easy prey, but is driven back.

"Team, I need backup now!" Eric move 60 ft away from the demons.

Sarim scoffs at the demon's failed strike and swings his mighty axe to cut it down from its torso. "Weakling! This is what an attack looks like!"

Avita finishes her spell with an abrupt "SEVEN!" and her arm flashes downward. Abruptly, a bony monstrousity of claws and teeth appears (hopefully) directly behind the Demons attacking Sarim and Andras (if not, in the middle of wherever the Demons are thickest that's within 25 ft and where it can use a full attack), and lashes out with jagged teeth and bone white claws.

Dropping the halberd, Andras steps back, putting her weight on her uninjured leg. She draws her sword and brings it down on the attacking demon, but misses.

Eric's back is exposed as he flees the demons, giving them an opportunity to strike. Both do so, sinking their long claws into his skin. Although Eric's initial burst of speed manages to create some distance, the wolf-like demons soon catch up, and one rams it's clawed fist into Eric's side, mangling his flesh and organs.

At the door to the house, the battle is still going strong. Sarim struggles to find the room to swing, but manages to slay one of the attackers with an upward slice, splitting it's skull in half.

Avita's skeletal bear appears, and begins slashing and biting at the demons. They manage to squirm out of it's reach, but are now trapped between two opposing sides. The gnomish soldiers on the wall cheer.

Another blast of fire scorches the stone building, and melts the remaining demons into greasy-goo.

Eric takes 9 damage, knocking him unconscious and down to -1.

Avita's skelebear goes poof, disappearing back to whatever question-begging plane of Undead it originated from. She's already summoning another behind the demons wherever they are thickest. to charge the demons bothering Eric (25 foot range on the spell plus 80 foot charge should be enough)

And then, with no spells left to cast, takes a pot-shot from the window at any Demon she can get a clear shot at. One of the ones bothering Eric should do.

Sarim sees Eric go down and barrels his way toward the attackers, swinging at them fiercely. "The elf does not die this day!"

The demons quickly fall before your attack. Nearly bowled over by the skeletal bear's charge, one demon takes an arrow in the thigh and collapses. The other attempts to flee, but both are cut down by Sarim and Andras.

You hear a cheer go up from the guards on the wall. It seems the demons have been driven off. As you watch, the last surviving fiend is taken by a crossbow bolt as it attempts to escape down an alley.

Andras heals Eric, restoring him to consciousness and healing his wounds. A squad of soldiers hurry's out to escort inside the walls, several murmuring congratulations.

Inside the city wall, surrounded by regular people, it's hard to believe that a battlefield is only 50 feet away. As the soldiers lead the refugees away, Olidar turns to you, his grin returned. "It's been... Well, considering the circumstances, not exactly a pleasure, but I'm glad we had the chance to work together. I'm sure you'll all be eager to relax, but tomorrow I'll let you know of any available assignments. May the Sun shine on you."
