    Default West Coast Chronicles (IC)

    Chapter One: In the Know

The first page opens on a picture of Rick Daily, lead reporter for San Fran Stories, as he discusses the early morning news over picturesque pictures of the sun rising over San Fransapporo Bay.

"Good morning. The time is currently 9:45 and now for the news. The stalemate between the multiparty board of superheroes reaches day twenty as The Guardians fail to reach a settlement between the various superhero organizations within the city. Reports from Verdant Garden, the headquarters for the metahuman governance board, indicate that while most minor parties have agreed to all terms presented within the new City Charter, the Weather Report has drawn a red line over further control granted to A.E.G.I.S operatives. Further breakdowns seem imminent as The Seven Warlords, the infamous "Legal Villain" organization have taken this morning to break security and demand equal voice in ongoing discussion. Jessica Ky will have more at eleven. This is an ongoing story, please keep your station set to KNOQ: The Know for any further developments. We now turn to Charles Xiavar for the Weather Report and Crime. Charles?"

The next page moves to an ongoing conflict in the Bay area, skies burnt orange and sky blue pink by the morning sun. The Typhoon Knights, a set of power armored mercenaries known for their affiliation with one of the Seven Warlords, have the local Ocean Tram between San Fransapporo proper and Bear Island on lockdown. Charle's voice is interposed as further panels show the Knights funneling hostages into the Ocean Trams and fortifying their position.

"Good morning San Fransapporo. Today's weather will be sunny in the morning turning to cool and foggy by the end of the evening as rain showers pass through the city. Pack an umbrella and bundle up as tonight is going to be a chilly one. Liu the Robin wishes everyone in the city a pleasent evening and promises an upcoming album release in the third quarter for her fans. Now on to the Crime Report. It seems that the Typhoon Knights have returned to San Fransapporo and are wasting little time making their presence known. We will have Dr. Lance Herring on at the top of the hour to discuss how likely further attacks by affiliates of the Seven Warlords are considering their crashing of the Charter Talks. Local officials are in route to stabilize the situation currently. If you have any further information, please call 206-775-5669 or text "Know". Stay safe San Fransapporo."

The next page cuts to our intrepid heroes, walking us through a typical morning for the young teens before crisis hits. What were you doing before the attack by the Typhoon Knights, how did you hear about the attack and what do you do when you reach the site?

Genevieve is enjoying a nice, relatively quiet lunch-and-tinker at the Pizza Shack when the Typhoon Knights story scrolls across the bottom of the livestream monitor. She pauses, a slice of pepperoni-and-tuna halfway to her mouth as she reads the details.

"Well, that just won't do." Popping the slice into her mouth and holding it there as she scoops up her supplies, she beats a hasty retreat towards the door, slipping the Odyssean Ouroboros onto her finger, and texting the rest of the team.

@IDreamOfGenie: Bad guys at the Ocean Tram, check the news. Meet you guys there, rendezvous overhead.

Nice thing about the Pizza Shack? It's usually busy enough that most people don't notice when somebody makes a swift exit to go fight supervillains.

Jovian hovers in the air, well above the stopped tram and hopefully far enough out that the Knights won't be able to see her. She's still normal sized–the Ouroboros was not without a weight limit–but she's already in full costume, satellite artifacts in orbit around her.

She pulls a small crystal ball out of her carry belt, swiping her hand across it to zoom in on the image of the tram below. The range on it isn't great, but for low level reconnaissance like this it could do the job... about as well as a pair of binoculars, but where was the fun in that?

-What here is the biggest threat?
-What here can I use to get the passengers out safely?

Sarah Matthews sat impatiently tapping her foot in math class. Mr. Harada had already given her a warning about disruption in the last fourteen minutes, and it looked like he was getting ready to say something again. She didn't mean to be disruptive, but it was almost impossible to stop herself. It's not that the class bored her, math was actually one of her only decent subjects, it's that school was by its own nature maddeningly dull. There was so much more to do in life than sit in uninspired, homogenized classrooms! It was a beautiful morning! A warm day! And yet, here she was. Trigonometry. Joy of joys.

Her phone suddenly blared out her text alert, almost causing Sarah to jump out of her chair. The class started laughing until Mr. Harada turned around. His face looked like an oncoming storm, but he merely pointed a finger towards the door and said, "Stand outside, Ms. Matthews."

Sarah sheepishly gathered her backpack and headed for the door with a mumbled "Yes, Mr. Harada." Once outside, she pulled out her phone with barely contianed excitement. That alert tone could only mean one thing.

@IDreamOfGenie: Bad guys at the Ocean Tram, check the news. Meet you guys there, rendezvous overhead.

"Yes! Villains! Maybe today won't be so bad after all."

Sarah had no time to reflect on the irony of that thought before heading off to the first floor bathrooms. She waited until the girl's side was clear, picked a quiet stall, and then unearthed the suit from her backpack. Changing in such a cramped spot was...challenging, but Sarah was getting better at it. She was careful to slip on the fancy ring Jovian had given her before completely donning the suit, as it would fall off otherwise. And she did not want to think about what would happen if the ring ever fell off while she was at any altitude. Other than that, after routine oxygen level and suit seal checks, Sarah was ready to go. Excellent! This would be way better than learning about angle functions; as long as she didn't die, anyways.

The change complete, Sarah activated the suit. With a quiet hiss, the suit sealed itself and she slipped through the floor. The first couple times she'd had fallen into the sewer pipes under the bathroom, Sarah had gagged reflexively. It took a couple times to realize she couldn't smell anything when phased anyways, but that didn't stop the uncomfortable feeling of being surrounded by refuse. With a quick turn to orient herself, she flew off down a tunnel until she felt she was far enough away from the school. After that, it was easy to make her way down towards Jovian's location. Well, after figuring out she had gone the wrong way at first.

Upon arrival, Sarah stole a quick glance around the scene for her teammates. She couldn't spot anyone else, and the villains were a little too far away, so maybe she was the first one there? Darn. She really wanted to see them in action again.

Wait! It was hard to spot Jovian, but Sarah eventually found her. Wasn't she a little too high up though? Sarah didn't dare travel more than ten or so feet off the ground if she could manage it. Any higher...and her stomach churned at the thought. Maybe she'd wait down here for the others. Or maybe she could get closer and take a look at the villains...

In either case, she texted back, "Here now, let's go!"

A pile of threadbare blankets and well-worn comforters sits on the floor of an equal threadbare and well-worn apartment. The walls were clearly white at one point, but had grown faded and dirtied; the linoleum counters were a tad grimy and a bubbling brown spot sat next to the stove where a pan that was still too hot was set several months ago; and the furniture only included a folding card table and two chairs that didn't match. A phone lights up and buzzes quietly on the table and we see the pile of blankets stir. A thick tail snakes out and knocks the phone off the table and onto the floor, where a clawed hand snatches it and draws it back into the nest in the center of the floor. Underneath the blanket fort a scaly face is lit from below by a soft blue light and slitted eyes adjust to the brightness. The screen displays a text message, larger than one might normally see:

@IDreamOfGenie: Bad guys at the Ocean Tram, check the news. Meet you guys there, rendezvous overhead.
Ryan grumbles as he taps out a response with one giant finger on a similarly larger than normal keyboard. Ryan hated how hard using his phone had become and he also hated working before noon, but it's a small price to pay to be superhero. After a few seconds he sends his reply and stretches up to his full height, touching his hands to the ceiling and groaning.

    @SonofSonofGodzilla: crime b4 12 shoud b ilegal omw

Our hero sniffs a few t-shirts, dons a faded purple one that apparently didn't smell as bad as the others, and wraps his ribbon of a mask around his eyes. To hide his giant lizard identity. Then leaps out the window.

We smash cut to our scaly friend tearing across the tracks of the ocean tram. His claws clack and his tail slaps as he rips through trees and bounds four-legged towards the nearest tram car. His muscles roar under his scales as he leaps over trees and bounds across the narrow straight. He lets out a shout as he launches himself at the rear car, his jump made all the sweeter and more dramatic by the magic ring that glitters in the morning sun.

"Please stand clear of the doors!"

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

We're gonna use Unstoppable to crash across the tracks, through any defensive line that may be set up, and into the tram's closest car. To secure the passengers.

    (2d6+2)[9]

Mixed success means I'll take something with me because that sounds sweet.

Unstoppable: When you smash your way through scenery to get to or away from something, roll +Danger. On a hit, the world breaks before you, and you get what you want. On a 7-9, choose one: mark a condition, leave something behind, or take something with you. On a miss, you smash through, but leave devastation in your wake or wind up somewhere worse, GM’s choice.

    Tempest
    Potential: 0/5

About two doors down from Sarah's classroom, another phone sounds. Adaugo stands up without even checking the details, gets the nod from the teacher, and vanishes out the door. Sometimes she wished that her legacy didn't have some kind of dumb tradition about masks, but sometimes being an officially registered teen super did bring some handy perks. Jogging down the corridor, Adaugo ditches her school bag, replacing it with a bullet-proof vest. She slips the key into her pocket and shuts the locker door, before heading to the roof, slipping on the ring with one finger. Unlike Nuisance, however, Tempest does not use hers, going faster on land.

The school doors bang behind her as she sprints down the road, hitting a steady pace at 70. Boots drum on the asphalt as she weaves between traffic. This bit of being a hero, this bit she could live with. Reading the text, as she runs, Adaugo comes to a halt at the waterfront and looks around, spotting Nuisance nearby, and Jovian orbiting above. Jogging evenly along the footpath, she comes up beside them, her heart sinking as she spots the obvious signs of hostages and what are most definitively weapons.

"And just like that, my good mood died..."

From one of the pockets of her vest Adaugo extracts a pair of plain binoculars, but barely gets them up to her eyes when something huge and scaly blocks her vision. Shoving them back inside the pocket, she watches GG ram through the doors of the train car, then starts to move forward. Turning over her shoulder to shout at the rest of the team, Adaugo breaks into another run.

"I'm going to kick in the front door, keep them distracted while Gecko gets between them and the hostages." Pausing suddenly as a thought occurs to her, she spins on the sand to shout back another message. "We probably want someone else in the train car with GG, or we'll start a stampede or something." Then, turning, she sprints along the shore, following the other hero with a similar leap. Her strength maybe less that his, but speed allows her similar jump distances. Midway through the air she extends one arm, a spear appearing in it.

Golden light hisses and spits around the blade as Adaugo lands on the track next to the rear carriage, then storms towards the disorganised Typhoon Knights.

Bear Island. A large island off the coast of San Fransapporo. Home to several large corporations and a small city district. The rest of the island is given over to hiking trails on its small mountains where a good number of retired heroes make their home in the quiet privacy of the secluded woods. Hexxen Tech is situated on Bear Island and is the largest local corporation to make its home there.
Dr al-Nahas, Morgan's Civics professor, had organized the academic excursion, an opportunity to tour Hexxen Tech's botanical gardens, and the surrounding nature preserve. So when her alarm went off super early, knowing her dad was working on some analytic or another wouldn't be around, she made a healthy breakfast, flapjacks, fruit, juice. Snuck into his lab, left it out for him before she took off for Sakura Hills, and the track field.

Morgan managed to get in ten laps before she hit the showers, changed into her school uniform and headed back out to the bus which would take them to the Ocean Tram which would ferry them to the Island. They were almost halfway through the ferry trip to the island, when, just after 9:30am, she noted the airborne arrival of Typhon Knights. Dr al-Nahas calmed her fellow students down, reminding them that San Fransapporo's hero community would likely respond shortly, but until that point they should remain calm, and comply with the villains.

She started when Brent elbowed her in the arm, "Bet you Saturna shows up." He winked at her, he actually had the nerve to wink at her. "Shut up!" She hissed, before lowering her voice to a whisper, "You keep going on like that," she nodded towards the encroaching armored villains, "you'll get someone hurt, or worse."

She reached out, telepathically, homing in on her friends, touching each of their conscious thoughts, gently at first so as not to startle them, "Uh, guys. Got a sitch here on the Ocean Tram." A few short moments afterwards, the entire Tram shuddered as Gecko hammered into one of the rear cars. As the villains moved to react to her companions assault, she reached out trying to breach their thoughts, to determine their motives for the attack.

OOC: By telepathically observing the Typhon Knights, I am attempting to Pierce their Mask, rolling my Mundane of +0, (2d6+0)[3]. Hopefully it will yield some insight. Psi shields?!? Who upgraded these guys armor with Psi Shields! Also ... potential!

And we should probably determine what our Team pool is.

    Terrene, The GM
    Team: 1

Everything happens at once from your vantage point Jovian as Geko comes screaming across the tracks, leaving devastation in his wake. The Knights are swift to respond however as a few of their number (around fifteen in total) close their ranks. Chatter fills the air as they shout orders even as Tempest lives up to her name, sowing yet more chaos into their ranks. This is all easy to see from where you stand Nuisance, perhaps valor is the better part of discretion? Everyone else is jumping in at least so why not you?

The Knights are unbalanced to be sure but they aren't a name to be feared in the city for no reason. As you land on the tracks Tempest, the waters surge with the whine of engines as Cataphract surges from the depths and thus placing a well timed kick to your back. They was once a hero like you, relaying on power armor and stunning combat skills with blade and shield but it seems as late their allegiances have changed.

    "We were waiting for you!"
they call out, voice oddly garbbled by theor helmet, as they lands on the track. [B][COLOR="#006400"]Geko is now cut off from you, as are you from him in both directions as the knights lay on the other side of the tracks. A small drone lifts from Cataphract's shoulder armor, clearly some kind of camera as opposed to a weapon. "Come now girl, test your blades against a real opponent."

The panels then shift back to Geko (and Saturna) as the several knights brought along on the rampage crash into the tram. Kids scream, glass and paneling fly through the air. It's chaos inside the already rather cramped tram though luckily the safety measures fire, large pontoon style flotation devices keeping the tram safe should it somehow come off the track. The Knights either don't seem concerned with the students or have assessed they won't be much issue, probably both because of the very large Mutant that somehow got them where they are. With dizzy heads, the Knights step back onto the tracks with blades drawn. "Come on kid, keep it up. Do your worst" one goads as the other taps their armor, shimmery shields forming up around them to put a literal wall between Geko and the civilians.

Saturna, sadly any psychic chatter is drowned out by excitable (and understandably worried) kids. On the plus side, no one's really paying attention to you as the good Doctor goes back to trying to both calm and corral his wards away from the windows least they get hurt in the ensuing rescue attempt. Not that they're making it easy as they try to pile up to watch Geko and the Knights.

    Spoiler: Jovian

The Typhoon Knights aren't anything to sneeze at but with Cataphract here, the stakes are higher than before. He is a threat and considering he wasn't here a few moments ago...he probably has more traps and contingencies planned.

As to how you can get everyone to saftey, with Geko breaking some of the rail all you really need to do is deal with the Knights on the tram and everything should be good.

    Spoiler: Geko

Morgan watched the Knight's turn towards the larger, lizard-shaped threat, and as Cataphract revealed himself by attacking Tempest, she was shocked. While he'd typically been a loner, he had been a member of San Fran's hero community, at least until now.

She shook her head, clearing the confusion and concentrated on the task at hand, she needed to co-ordinate the students, and other civilians move them to a safer location before her, and her team could get to work on these guys. She reached out, her thoughts brushing the conscious minds of the panicked civilians around her, "This is Saturna of the WATCH, my team and I are attempting to contain the situation," as she broadcast she moved to the rear of the tram car, yelling out, "This way," while waving on her students. She continued broadcasting, "but we need you to move to a minimum safe distance to ensure your own safety and that of my team. Pictures can wait until after the Knights have been apprehended."

The beauty of telepathic contact was people heard what they wanted to hear, so it was unlikely that anyone would be able to identify Saturna's mental communication matched Morgan's own voice.

OOC: Not sure if this is a Move or not, using Telepathy to co-ordinate a panicked crowd, perhaps Unleash attempting to reshape the environment? Seeing as Saturna's Freak is +0, it's a base roll, and I will let Razade adjudicate whether or not a move is required. (2d6+0)[8].

Jovian observes through her crystal ball as the situation rapidly unfolds, leaving Gecko in the tram with a handful of knights, Saturna on the train with the hostages, and Tempest squaring off against... Cataphract? What was he doing here?

She shakes her head and sends out quick messages to the rest of the team through their telepathic link. Saturna, Gecko, see what you can do to get the knights back out of the tram. Nuisance, you've still got the element of surprise; see if you can get into the cabin and get the tram moving once the knights are clear. Tempest, I'm on the way.

Maybe not the best plan, but they hadn't had much time to come up with something better. Taking a deep breath, Jovian starts flying straight down; when she's only a few dozen feet up, she deactivates the ring and shouts "Titanus Ex Magicae!"

Sarah couldn't help but give an excited whoop as GG crashed into the tram and Tempest shot past her like a blur. It was hard to feel anything but excitement as her adrenaline started pumping. This was it! This was exactly where she belonged. She stood in awe as her teammates snapped into action with all the trademark maneuvers of real heroes. School and trigonometry were long past distant memories for her now.

"Wait, what am I doing!? They need me in there!" Sarah chided herself as she finally snapped out of it. Sure enough, both Tempest and Jovian were already barking orders. Time to move!

Except...what was she supposed to be doing? Moving the tram after the knights cleared out? That...made sense, but it felt like she'd be missing out on just about everything. Though it sounded like Saturna and GG were looking after the hostages while Tempest and Jovian were taking on the big bad anyways. So her job was support and staying out of sight, then.

Awesome! She would rock the hell out of that job!

Sarah landed heavily just south of the tram and ran for the head car as fast as she could. It would probably have been more dangerous to fly there with so many guys in heavy armor watching, and her suit couldn't be on at all times or she'd run out of oxygen pretty quickly. Maybe they hadn't noticed her yet? The fear of a stray projectile or some dude tackling her kept Sarah's heart pounding in her ears.

"Don't be afraid, you can do this! Probably! Don't let them down."

The suit's quantum tunneling field activated again as she dove at the tram's wall. The field dropped as quickly as she passed through and her momentum carried her into the far wall with a bang. After a small yelp of pain and the sincere hope no one had seen that, Sarah popped up and looked around the car to see what was what.

Adaugo responds fluidly as Cataphract rises from the water, rolling with the kick then pivoting on one heel to face her foe. The shock blade of her spear crackles and hums as she holds it defensively, but she can't help feeling a touch of dread seep into her gut. Aware that her spear will not penetrate his armour, at least without risking slicing the warrior inside in half, she looks around worriedly.'S***. What else have they got hiding?'

Almost immediately she regrets her thoughts, remembering the live telepathic link. She does, however, manage to avoid broadcasting her thoughts about such connections to the whole group. Jovian says something, then starts to fly towards her, growing in size, so Tempest takes a few steps back and half crouches, bracing in case Cataphract is thrown into her. She can see him looking at her quizzically, but he doesn't quite have enough time to say another taunt before Jovian slams into him.

Leaping forward, Adaugo jabs at the armoured warrior, aiming to keep him off balance. Her shock spear isn't really suitable for fighting sensibly insulated foes, so she focuses on preventing him from effectively attack Jovian, rather than doing damage herself.

Ryan loves the brain call, maybe it'd be weird for some people but our boy already had girls voices going through his head all day anyway, plus it lets him dish out one-liners even when he's got a mouthful of bad guy,

You know I'm really at my best when I'm at my worst, haven't you tin cans seen Jurassic Park?

Gecko's eyes narrow, his tail sways gently before snapping to attention. He lets out a roar that sounds somewhere between a shrieking bird and a guttural crocodilian, a sound that would cause lesser men to run in fear. But these Knights were no lesser men, so they would get to tussle with our saurian savior. He launches himself at the crowd of knights, he slams his full force in the center of their formation and his claws tear, his teeth rip and his tail slams in a whirlwind of armored flesh and inhuman force. Gecko leaps from Knight to Knight, ripping metal with his jaws and bowling over them with flying shoulders and a trunk of a tail. Each hit is punctuated with a hiss, a snap, or another shrieking roar. A primal fury radiates from him in all directions, thickening the air as he revels in tearing into foe after foe. He lets himself go in the gnashing and tearing and hardly thinks, just acts on animal instinct.

    Team:
    1

    Group A: Jovian and Tempest

With a resounding slam, Jovian drops from the sky like some dark comet, right on top of Cataphract. He, and the railway he's standing on, take quite the serious hit though the small drone he let loose zooms out away from the danger. The other Typhoon Knights give distance as well since an 18 foot tall girl falling from the sky isn't really much of a common occurrence. The support of Tempest is no mean reason either, spear giving enough room for Jovian to be clear of any serious reprisal considering she's a rather large target.

"That's it, keep up the good work!" Cataphract shouts as they work free from under Jovian, armor quite the mess from such a hit. "Show the world what you're really like. Show everyone watching just how dangerous you all are. Teen super heroes...to think you're ready for the big leagues!"

The Knights close in, the two of you are ringed in rather well but at least you're not alone. Shame about the track though, it's unlikely anything is moving on it for a good week or two.

    Group B: Nuisance, Saturna, Gecko

As you reach out Saturna, the panic in the tram quickly subsides which is probably good as Nuisance appears out of the blue not much later. The other hero actually seems to help in some small way as it gives credence to your attempt to keep your schoolmates from doing anything too reckless. Most even leave their vantage point at the windows which keeps your teacher from doing anything too reckless too. Not that Nuisance recognizes you. To her you're just another student, calm for the moment inside a by now mostly floating tram. A few good pushes could get it off the track and into the water and from there someone could steer it too shore. It's designed to float and has a motor in case of such emergencies after all.

Things may not be as copacetic for you on the tram lines itself Geko but you're holding your own (even if you're only further damaging the track and thus a good way out of danger) against the Knights who are simply too terrified to really get close to a raging Mutant. It's good that Saturna calmed the students down though, a ripping roaring Geko is probably not the most fun thing to see when you're on a floating tin can. The Knights though are unbalanced, their backs to your erstwhile fellows and distracted by you.

    What do you all do?

    Spoiler: Nuisance
    Show
It's not so much the tram as the track which has a problem. Tram'll move just fine if you get it off the tracks. It's got floatation devices for any incident that might destroy the track. Which is fairly wrecked.

I'm about to wrap this up and put a pretty bow on it, so let's get a move on!

With a cocky thoughtcast and a smirk, Gecko dives forward. Some of the smaller Knights flinch, but our reptilian hero doesn't dive in for another hack-and-slash fest, no, he grabs the rails of the tram and rips them from the ground. He grunts and lets another guttural cry go from his snout as he tears and pulls at the rails. He whips each rail like they're made of taffy and slips them around the small crowd of Knights like a rubber hose cartoon.

You have the right to remain silent or whatever!

Surprisingly, Sarah found herself alone with the hostages in the tram. Wasn't her mission already too successful? Tempest and Jovian were squaring off against...was that Cataphract? What happened to him? Regardless, they seemed fine. GG was holding his own against a whole squad of baddies outside, and she couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiastic comments. True to his word, he ripped up more of the track, causing the tram to shudder some more before he tied it around the knights in power armor. This was too much fun, and now he was making hero puns!

Focus! It was always too easy to get distracted with so many awesome things happening around her. Hostages were definitely priority one right now, and wasn't Saturna around here? Actually, wasn't Saturna the one who had requested help earlier before the fight started? Where was she? Sarah could've sworn she was near the hostages and yet...ah, there she was. Morgan Maxwell was eternally "cursed" to stand out in a crowd, that much was certain. That Sarah was even given the privilege of knowing the Maxwell family apart from their superheroic lives was almost a little too much for her to handle sometimes, but there it was. They provided the team base, the supercomputer, and were even the ones responsible for getting the infinitely cool bow that Sarah used with her suit. She almost waved and shouted when she spotted Morgan right then and there.

But why wasn't she in costume already? There were people to save! Actually, now it seemed like Morgan was staring at her rather pointedly, what...Oh!

    Duh.

But...how could she possibly help Morgan slip away in such a cramped tram? She didn't have smoke bombs, or any power nearly as convenient. It would have to be flashy.

"If you could all hold on tightly,"
Sarah said, the oxygen mask slightly distorting her voice, "I think I'm about to disconnect the tram."

God she hoped this would work; the hostages were already giving her weird looks. Why were these people so calm!?

"Hang on to your seats! Be careful to keep your arms and legs inside the tram, you are not free to move about the cabin. I'll be sure to distribute floaties to anyone who uh...falls out."

With a quick motion, Sarah drew her weapon. At first it looked like a slim stick of metal, but the object rapidly extended its arms into the shape of a bow with no string. Sarah drew her arm back and energy formed between the arrow rest and her hand. Her suit phased as the energy expanded, so as to keep her hands from being burned. The beam continued to glow brighter and brighter as the energy heated the air around it, growing to an almost blinding light. Once the temperature had been calibrated, she aimed a couple shots at the front and back of the tram near the wheels. The bolt shot straight through the floor and into the track where the tram was anchored, neatly avoiding puncturing the flotation devices. The wheels now melted, the tram dislodged from the broken remains of the track with one final snap and tipped over into the water. The car rocked violently as it righted, pitching Sarah off of her feet in the process.

When she came to, the emergency lights were flashing and an automated voice was giving a warning in what sounded like Japanese. Maybe that would be enough. "Everyone alright?" She asked quietly, trying to stand up and get her bearings again.

The tram rocked as the plasma bolt slagged the wheels holding the tram on the rails; the car free fell for a few short seconds before crashing into the surface of the Bay. She decided not to waste the distraction that Sarah had provided for her, as she felt the tram drop, the lights flickered, and she moved towards the exit in the confusion. When she got there she drove her fingers between the doors, squeezing between them and plunging into the cold morning waters of the Fransapporo Bay. As the waters closed over her head, she began to switch to her costume which she wore underneath her Sakura Heights High; her civilian clothes sank beneath the choppy water, she secured the Odyssean Ouroboros on her left index finger. The magics of Jovian's ring allowed her to displace the water and propel herself to the opposite side of the tram.

She broke the surface, reaching out to her team, "We need to coordinate here, GG, what's the sit-rep with the Pawns? Lets lock Cataphract down, Nuisance and I have the civilians secured on the tram." She continued to gain elevation, trying to recall what she knew of Cataphract and his fall from grace within the heroic community.

Cataphract laughs as the knights move in, all but ignoring the challenge from Tempest. "No, I don't think you understand just what we're doing here girl. It's not about who started it, it's about how you've handled it. You see, dear, the halls of power are watching. Waiting. Debating. Today, all the big names are gathering to talk about the future of this city and you and your little WATCH are apart of that discussion. We weren't just waiting for a hero to respond. We were waiting for you." Cataphract motions about you, Tempest and Jovian, with the tip of their sword. "One hostage situation and the Ocean Tram will be down for weeks. Not a particularly good showing for what could have been an easy victory and that's the point. Record it, send it, edit it and show it off to all the people already poised to want to clamp down on the city. You're just the proof we need because it's not about your witnesses, it's not about the facts. It's about giving the perception of being right to the people who have the most power and the most to worry from you, the New Generation. The tram breaks free with a sickening whine, shrieks from the students are short lived as you don't go plunging into the cool waters of the Cascadian Bay. More than enough time to let Saturna get into her costume and join the fight in full. The civilians are safe and from the sound of things outside...the Knights are no longer a concern. This is confirmed as the next panel shows Saturna rising out of the water, Geko just finishing the last touches on the track bow he's put the Knights within though not without a few solid punches from the subdued villains.

Things on the shore look much more dire, your teammates surrounded by the rest of the Knights and hemmed in by Cataphract. Oddly however there doesn't seem to be any more fighting going on. Perhaps they've come to some kind of agreement? You can't really hear them as far away as you are but you're all connected mentally so you've got that going for you. Perhaps Nuisance could pop in?

As she watched Cataphract speak with her teammates she couldn't hear his words, but she was able to feel the anger, the confusion, the doubt that resonated through the neural net she shared with the Jovian & Tempest. She had helped her classmates by channeling their fear away from them, holding it through mental strength alone, now she bleed off those emotions, mixed them with her teammates whirling emotions, it created a sort of feedback loop.

Her face contorted as she held the flood of emotions, she dropped the neural net so as not to be a channel those emotions, the fear, confusion, panic, back into her friends. From her spot inside the tram, things didn't seem so bad now. After a quick pat down, it certainly didn't feel like she'd broken anything. The hostages were disheveled and grumbling, but alive and mostly undamaged. Morgan was also nowhere to be seen, so that could only mean one thing:

Success! Maybe the Nuisance was pretty good at all this hero business after all! This was way easier than that time they fought Gravitas!

Sarah poked her head out of the tram window just in time to watch Saturna fly up out of the ocean and off towards the final group of villains. With so few of them left, it looked like things were wrapping up nicely! It even looked like Jovian and Tempest were cornering that traitorous Cataphract. It was all over!

    Wait, what was GG doing?

"Oh crap!" Her triumphant thoughts suddenly turning to panic as the giant lizard face-dived into a crowd of nasties. "I'm coming big guy!"

Without a second thought, Sarah activated her ring and phased through the tram wall. She let herself get just enough altitude for a better firing angle as she brought about her sci-fi bow. Sci-fi bow? It really needed a better name. Something fancy would have to be thought up later.

Sarah took aim and unleashed a hail of bolts at the group. Having just cooled down from a "melting point" setting, the arrows wouldn't do much more than irritate the knights if they hit, but it would hopefully be enough to make them duck for cover rather than pile on the hapless gecko.

    Everyone, Back Together

Cataphract makes no move to stop their imprisonment even as one of Jovian's madgets zips around them. The other Knights are not so ready for such a defeat however and they rush in to defend their erstwhile commander. Only to be met, however, with a resounding show of force from Tempest, a flurry of blows pushing the phalanx back once more. This opens them to the assault of Geko who screams across the water however only to trip, the butts and boots of a dozen healthy adults pounding down upon the poor teen with all their pent up frustration, no matter how short lived it is as Geko is spared the worst of their assault as Nuisance uses the retreat to come in bow blazing.

The final blow comes from Saturna, those few Typhoon Knights still on their feet and capable of defending themselves dropping their weapons and turning tail. You've never seen such heavily armored people run so fast. Such fear, such confusion, it's hard not to take some in yourself Saturna as the gestalt meta-thoughts flood back over your connection. A slew of voices, shouting at once and then silence. The Typhoon Knights, and Cataphract however, have been defeated!! In the nick of time as well as sirens blare, several coast guard boats and cop cars on the scene not too long behind. They're not alone however as the vultures appear, San Fransapporo Stories always seem to know how to get to a crime scene with the cops and they do not fail to disappoint. Reporters are quick to swarm, pushing past police as they cart off downed Typhoon Knights.

All of this however forgets one thing. The camera that Cataphract sent wizzing off. Unaccounted for and still at large. How much worse can you all make this?

"A word, a word please! Saturna!! Over here, a word!!" one shouts as a cop drags them off, cameras and mics in your face even as the police attempt to seize Cataphract from you. It is chaos, perhaps more than the combat you just experienced. What do you do?

"Eacigam Xe Sunatit." Jovian shrinks back down to her normal size, which gives her a new appreciation for exactly how tall Cataphract is. Or isn't. While she waits for the police to finish rounding up the Knights, she crosses her arms and approaches the cage, eying Cataphract inquisitively.

"Something seems off about all this." She speaks lowly, not a whisper but hopefully quiet enough not to draw attention to the conversation. "Your bearing lacks a certain... authority I'd expect from a supervillain. You used to be a hero. And you're targeting the reputation of young superheroes, W.A.T.C.H. in particular. Tell me, Cataphract..."

She leans in, placing a hand on the force cage. "You wouldn't happen to be related to Gravitas, would you?"

I hope it's okay to assume that Saturna shared the info from Reading the Files. If not, I'll edit that par out, but I think there's still enough other evidence for her to take a shot in the dark here. Never mind, I reread and saw that the former hero thing is public knowledge anyway.

I think I'm Provoking Cataphract here, trying to get them to tell me who they are. (2d6+2)[11]

Edit: Unless this is actually Pierce the Mask, in which case I got a 6. If that's the case, I'll spend a Team to act selfishly, since I'm pursuing my own curiosity instead of doing damage control with the press. I'll bump Mundane up and Freak down if that's how it shakes out.

They did it! Sarah would normally let out a whoop of joy at seeing enemies turn tail like that, but instead she was already landing heavily where the knights had stuck their boots into her poor scaly friend. How dare they! If she wasn't so preoccupied, she might've sent some parting shots their way just for spite. See how they like an energy bolt in the backside.

"Are you ok, GG?" She asked worriedly, holding her hand out gingerly in case he was bruised. There was a slight wheeze to her breath that she hadn't even noticed before; apparently it was tough keeping up with the superheroes in a suit with no ventilation.

Ryan seemed not entirely worse for wear, but Sarah was no doctor. She wouldn't even be able to tell what was wrong with a normal gecko unless parts were missing. Thankfully, he wasn't missing any parts that she could see. The panic sort of drained out of her all at once as the adrenaline left her system. She was still hovering over Gecko and trying to help him up, but it definitely felt like that was all the strength she had left right now. Hero work was so exhausting! Was she supposed to go back to school after this? The reporters were already clamoring for statements, but she barely had enough breath to see to her friends. She really wanted to give Tempest a high five for her amazing combat display, gawk at Jovian's energy cage, and even watch how Saturna handled reporters, but she just couldn't. Not from any closer than she was, at least. Maybe one day, she'd earn that spotlight too. For now though, she felt like the team really deserved it. She was proud of her friends.

Was gonna comfort and support GG, but it felt like an inopportune moment. I'll post again after Daffodil if it seems like a good time to interject, but I wanted to get this one out first.

    Goliath Gecko
    Conditions:
    Angry, Guilty, Insecure
    Potential: 1/5

Goliath Gecko lifts himself off the ground slowly, groaning like an ancient tomb opening for the first time in a thousand years. His muscles burn and his bones creak and his tendons yell expletives at him as he lifts his considerable heft back off his bruised butt. He brushes past Nuisance, almost like he didn't notice her. He sees the crowd of reporters and he cringes, he wasn't feeling like the hot and sexy hero stud he usually was, but he had an obligation to the team to help clean up the mess he made and an obligation to the people of the world to show off his handsome face. So he pushes through the growing crowd, tail dragging through the sand. As he breaks into the center of the crowd, he muscles his way in front of the cameras and grabs a microphone. His left eye is swollen shut, his mouth is bleeding, and he wobbles as a he stands. Time to flex on 'em baby.

"Alright, you know what, your hero has arrived! You can stop pestering the warm up act, I know what the people want! THE W.A.T.C.H. IS HERE, WE GOT CATAPHRACT, and you know we looked damn good doin' it.

Gecko teetered again, his head flailing and lolling from side to side as he stares down the barrel of each camera he can see. He continues to shout and as the blood builds in his mouth he hocks a glob of bloody spit on a reporter's shoes.

Write this down everyone, you can quote me on this! The W.A.T.C.H. runs these streets! We are the big ballers laying the smackdown on any of you jabronis that think you can step to us OR our city! WEST COAST BEST COAST, GET DUNKED ON CATA-F*CKER!

With that final exclamation, Gecko coughs up another glob of blood and his legs give out. A massive, scaly, monster slams into the sand in the middle of the crowd of reporters and lifts a single finger up as if to say "and another thing" as he attempts to continue talking into the sand.

I don't know that there's a move here, but if you'd like me to roll to make a fool I will gladly do so. Is this sufficiently foolhardy to clear insecure?

Sarah was wrong, Ryan's wounds were way worse than she'd thought. How he still managed to get up into the middle of the reporters was almost a feat in and of itself. He pushed past her and them like he was walking through a field of grass. How was he so confident like that? What gave him the strength to be so relaxed and amazing, even in a situation like this? She winced as he fell over into the sand, still coughing blood. Sarah would have never been able to do that. Not in front of everybody in San Fransapporo.

No! Now was not the time to think about that. Ryan might have been unashamed and awesome enough to show the world what he was made of, but he was still really hurt. With a bit of a stagger, Sarah moved towards the reporters and tried pushing through to her friends.

    "Excuse me-"

    "Hey!"

    "Please let me through!"

Unfortunately she wasn't anywhere near as strong as Ryan, and the large cameraman at the back didn't even seem to feel her trying to move past him. They probably couldn't even hear anything over the clamor everyone was making. Of course, she always had the option of phasing through them, but Sarah didn't like to pass through people. It had never seemed to bother them physically; it just felt...weird. Like an invasion of privacy or something, or maybe like she was the world's rudest ghost.

Not getting through that way then, and no way she capable of doing what Ryan just did. With a turn, she moved off to try and find an EMT and bring them over to the group. The search didn't take long, it looked like the medical responders were helping the hostages get back to the mainland alongside some of the police. She pleaded with the nearest one she could find; maybe they would be kind enough to see to one of the heroes if the hostages weren't too banged up.

Do I need to make a provoke roll here to try and lure someone over who can help? If so, I can edit that into this post.

    Tempest, the Legacy
    Potential: 1/5
    Conditions: Hopeless.

Adaugo leans on her spear, feeling suddenly tired. The battle is over, the knights are defeated, and judging by the quantity of shouting, the press have arrived. She grimly pulls herself upright, raising the spear over her head while muttering an incantation under her breath. A shimmer of golden light surrounds the weapon, then it fades out of existence, leaving her alone on the beach.

She sighs, then looks around the developing crowd, locating her team-mates. Nuisance is standing off to one side, looking just slightly forlorn, while Saturna is about to be accosted by reporters. Jovian talks to Cataphract through the bars of her energy cage, and Gecko is making a fool of himself in front of the press. Tempest takes two steps forward, then decides to let his rant run its course. Arguing with him in this mood would merely result in an unseemly brawl, and she really doesn't feel motivated for that. Instead she peers more closely at the scene, suddenly concerned with the extent of her fellow hero's injuries.

    'aw s***'

Moving suddenly forward through the crowd, Adaugo ducks and dodges to reach the prone Gecko's side. Telepathically, she signals to her team-mates to cover for her, while she attempts to lift the other hero. Then, realising the team's 'net' is still down, she instead signals to Saturna, hoping to get her to connect and pass her message on.

'Saturna, I'm going to go get this big lunk's dents seen to. Do you think that you or Sarah could give the news reporters something less embarrassing to talk about? A heroic speech would be golden, if you can...'

Slipping an arm under GG's bulk, Tempest speaks quietly in his ear. "C'mon handsome,
let's get you home. With me, on three: one, two and... up."
If the hero responds, Adaugo lifts him to his feet, and tottering somewhat under the weight of her ally, walks him away from the crowd. Refusing to be entangled in probing questions, she merely repeats the same story as many times as is neceseary. "Please, give me some room. This one's got a concussion, and needs to go home and rest up."

For her own part, she hopes she remembers enough of Lizard boy biology from watching GG fix himself on the last occasion he was entangled in a serious brawl.
