Nah, they don't give us tips at my job. But that's working at a dining hall for you.

RE: interrupting people - I dunno, that's not a huge problem for me, usually. If I accidentally interrupt someone, I'll usually back off and let them keep talking. If I need to get a word in, I'm louder than almost everyone I know and can generally just talk over them (not that it comes up often).

In what ways do you find yourself interrupting people?

For most proper nouns that end in "s", I'd say just add "es" onto the end, but that looks really awkward here. (Miss Hayeses?)

You could always add an apostrophe-s, though that's technically wrong. (Miss Hayes's).

I'd suggest rewording it somehow, unless (and maybe even if) that's basically unavoidable (address names on a letter, etc).

If it's the Hayes family, Hayeses. If it's specifically multiple unmarried Hayes ladies, you would do the title instead - Misses Hayes. Pretty sure that's how it works for titles.

That was the thought - trying to refer to two sisters, both unmarried, so both would be "Miss Hayes." Although it might be easier to just say "Miss Sarah and Miss Jane Hayes."

By 'proper nouns' I'm referring to names specifically AS proper nouns. Using Hayes as a descriptor like that makes it a not-proper noun. 'Miss Hayes' also implies the use of the word as a specific entity rather than a familial unit.

I wrote a program that actually works and wasn't copied from a workbook!

It's a fairly simple PHP thing, it does prices for me (basically, cost of service plus surcharge and gratuity and tax, minus any discounts). Fixed a few wrinkles - services can be fixed or hourly, so I have code for both, and I stopped it from displaying fees that are 0. I don't actually have anything to deal with negative numbers, but those really shouldn't happen anyway.

It's kind of long for what it does (92 lines), but a lot of that is that I've got a ton of input variables and a lot of lines where I'm doing essentially the same thing to a bunch of different variables. I'm inputting 10 numbers and one boolean and outputting 7, in 2 different formats depending on said boolean variable.

    Sure

Cosplay is the act of putting on a costume for a specific recognizable character as opposed to an archetype

    Why not?

Halloween was awesome yesterday. I went to the Halloween Parade as Carnage and so many people like my costume. Although many people mistaken my costume as Spider-Man. One person mistaken my costume as a Power Ranger. But other than that it was great.

FWIW years ago it was noticed that American men interrupt far more than American women (I think women are just more conscious about doing it), maybe things have changed since then, but regardless, either strike a blow for equality or call it reparations and keep interrupting!

I'm Canadian. Impoliteness is approximately as bad as high treason (except that everyone's too polite to bring it up).

Or were you using the broader definition of "someone who lives on either of the continents with 'America' in their names"?

Well, yeah. If you're not apologizing every five seconds, what kind of Canadian are you?

Remember, the correct response to "Stop apologizing too much!" is "Sorry."

On a more serious note, I'll see what I can do advice-wise, as I tend to have the opposite problem (i.e. I never manage to get my two nonexistent cents in). The best I can give is probably just try and wait for a natural stopping point in a conversation. Whether it's just one-on-one, or involving other people, it's generally better to just take things slow. And, yeah, that does sometimes mean you miss a chance to make a relevant comment, but that's something that you just learn to live with.
Unfortunately, this is something that you really have to get a feel for on your own... it's not really teachable, per se.

Nah, I was just highlighting the limits of a generalization (often when "studies show" the "study" is just of some colleges students that had time on their hands).
