Unfortunately I think that I need to finish earning my pension, because unless there's a large building with courts, a jail, a police station, a coroner's office, laboratory, and autopsy room, all built in the 1950's and still using the fixtures made then, that need constant maintenance, with few replacement parts manufactured so things have to be -re-built "in house", I don't know how I"d earn a living!

I know just enough to know that you guys out there use newfangeled "Pex" piping (and probably other new technologies) whereas in S.F. it's more "If it's good enough for grandfather" (ironic given the whole near Silicon Valley "Tech" thing), while my skill set is all about keeping obsolete equipment working (when I started I was told, "You remember the Dirty Harry movie? Well than this should look familiar because this was the background" [in the autopsy scene]), and there's no way that I could compete with young, strong, fast Alabamans who are familiar with the newer plumbing technology!

And I've got two sons to get through college first (or at least help them find a job), and I'd melt in the heat.

"Sweet tea" a friendly neighbor (and space) does sound tempting.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't California just as much of a heat-ridden hellhole as Alabama is? (Hey, I'm from the UK where two consecutive days above 70F (21C) degrees is considered a heatwave...).

California is a really, really big state. The amount of heat you get really depends on which bit you're talking about. Keep in mind it's got about the same amount of latitude variation as the UK does.

I was born in Los Angles and we had variation of temps of lower 40's [typical] to above 100 in the summer with the Santa Anna winds hitting us.

Then I got stationed at an Air Force base in the rain shadow of the San Bernadno Mountains that had variations of Temps from 20's in the winter, with snow, and 120 + in the summer.

In essence, California has a Huge variations of climate, some of which I did not even mention such as central and north.

As the state is 700 miles long, over 1100 Km.

and now my discourse on useless data is done.

Most of California does get very (to me) hot, but I work in (and for) "The City and County of" San Francisco, where in some neighborhoods (and some nearby communities like Pacifica) it's a good bet that the temperature will be in the 50's (Fahrenheit), day or night, winter or summer.
I live (really just sleep) about a 15 mile drive from San Francisco in a tiny town just north of Berkeley (where I spent most of my childhood), which is next to Oakland (where I was born and lived most of my life), and in a given year, even as much as ten days that it gets below freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 degrees Celsius) is extremely rare, as is getting above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). However 50 miles away in places like Livermore sometime every winter it gets below freezing, and sometime every summer it gets above 100, which is true of most of California, but I generally follow a policy of regarding anyplace that's more than a days walk from a BART station (our subway), or a Cal-Trans train station as "There be Dragons", and accept for work I seldom travel more than two miles from my house.

Ideally I'd like to stay in the "Fog belt" and use a bicycle to get most places, but my wife insists on my driving a car so we can buy "bargains" (I hate driving so much!).

I chuckle at this because climate change has hit where I am pretty hard. We were above freezing during the day for two weeks. When the sun was out for 5 C weather, I debated getting the hammock out.

Also that tool is generally a lot of fun.
Oh, yes, this is fun! I stuck my hometown into it for comparison's sake.

I have added Yellowknife to this.

One of my favorites is the "chance of high winds" graph, where mine is just on another graph, essentially.

Also this graph is slightly flawed. Our tourism is super hug in Winter because the asian countries love coming up here in the winter.
