Default The Road Ahead - Left Fork [IC]

    OOC Thread

It has been an unpleasant, cramped journey. Your world these past days? Weeks? Has been this cage of iron bars, a heavy waxed-canvas cover keeping out prying eyes, and leaking in the little light that is your only connection to the outside. Of course, it isn't as if mere bars could keep one such as you contained. That's the job of the walls of force hemming you in, the chains - metaphysical rather than literal -of arcane power restraining your more... exotic abilities.

You've seen your jailers - perhaps when they captured you, or during the transaction where they acquired you from your original captors. They seem to be primarily human, with a scatting of other 'common' races: soldiers, clerics, others. Their leader may be a mage of some sort, you saw a human figure in brocade robes, and heard her called Weir.

That was all those days, or weeks, ago. Since then the wagon your cage is on has been moving along steadily and you've had only yourself for company - at least until today. Today, the wagon stopped abruptly. It's been several hours and sound - sounds from outside - are beginning to filter in. And those arcane restraints - are they perhaps a bit looser than they were before?

    Spoiler
    Show
You've spent the last while inside something like a force cage (which let in light, and air, but little else including sound - if you require food, it showed up while you were asleep), inside a regular cage, and with many of your abilities suppressed. The wagon stopping and outside sounds filtering in means something has changed...

He had learned in his time in this little box that trying to just step through it was not possible, but it was deathly quiet before and now, now there was sound. Maybe, just maybe. He had tried to look around before to see if there were any people thinking nearby but that too was endless quiet. Maybe now he could do a mind spy. He stood in his cage and looked towards the direction where one of the other carts should be, maybe one in front and behind, he focused and opened his mind up to listen to what other people might be thinking. It wouldn't last long and he would have to keep spying and prying for it to work but if he could find someone thinking then maybe they could play.

The faint noise brought the hulking creature out of his reverie. Ghilbrizeth had been telling himself this was a fight like any other, fought with patience and vigilance: wait for the opponent to make a mistake, then punish him for it. Still, he had begun to accept that he would find himself once again bound in servitude and was unsettled by how easily that had come. The conditioning of the Deep Masters was still inside him. I'll have to keep an eye on that.

Stretching, Ghilbrizeth set down the one book his captors had inexplicably left him as they took all his other possessions, and stood. Leaning towards the wall of his cage, Ghilbrizeth spat against the wall of the tent, watching to see if the magical barrier still stopped contact with the canvas covering. If the mystic bindings have indeed loosened enough that only the mundane cage and cloth appear to be left, he will attempt to render himself invisible using his mystical talents to confirm that his magic is working again as well.

    Silhouette Sugartwist

Silhouette is a small pixie with long dark hair, as well as ebony insect-like wings. She's leaning back in her cage, hands in her lap, and her long legs stretching out from her little black dress woven with silk and ribbons. She doesn't seem interested in moving. If anything, she wishes the people outside would be quiet so she could take a nap.

The others have been more active today. In fact... someone was trying to read her mind. "Um... e-excuse me," she says quietly, calling out to no one in particular, as she is not able to pinpoint the origin of the power. "If you want to know what I'm thinking, you could ask me. I wouldn't mind." Her voice is wavering, as she draws her legs in and holds them closer to her body, looking around cautiously.

He no longer sleeps in his new form, and that makes the hours of captivity pass by even more slowly. But he can still lose himself in thoughts and memories, even if many of the latter are less than pleasant. He is trying to recall all the lyrics of a bawdy song he'd heard performed at a festival once, when sounds of an argument from outside... something about if and when one of the wagons will need a new wheel... break his concentration. If he can hear that, then his cage isn't keeping out sound anymore. What else might get through? He directs a small puff of smoke at one wall, watching for any of it to escape... Then he feels something probing at his thoughts... Is that why they eased the barriers? He tries to resist...

Vyöry had been in this box for the past week or so. Initially he had tried to escape, but found out rather quickly that there was something special about the box. He couldn't use his breath and he also couldn't hear anything happening outside the box. When he tried breaking free, it seemed as if something was preventing the door and sides from budging. After a several attempts he gave up. Today was different though, today he could hear stuff happening outside of his crate. Maybe, just maybe I can break free today. Something has changed if I can hear outside noises. He then proceeded to start trying to break free. He started thrashing about trying to get the door to break open. After a few minutes, he noticed something was trying to read his mind. Who is this trying to invade my head? Are you here to help me out of this crate?

I was thinking that if successful, the crate falls off the wagon causing the door to come loose.

The saliva arcs through the air and lands on the canvas - there doesn't seem to be anything between him and it. When he tries to turn invisible, there is a moment of hesitation (a last vestige of the magic that had cut him off from his abilities perhaps) and then he is as clear as fine glass.

The smoke rolls right between 2 of the bars - past where the wall of force was, it finds its freedom through a thin gap in the canvas.

Vyöry's attempts to escape the cage are perhaps more successful than intended! As he thrashes about to upset it, he inadvertently manages to pop out between the bars, and slides out the bottom of the canvas! Clearly his captors were relying on their magical prowess to keep him contained, not the more mundane equipment. He can see 4 other wagons, with similar canvas covers, though from his position he can't tell what might be underneath. From the direction the wagons are facing they had been traveling north. The road seems relatively straight ahead and behind. To the West is a field ending in the beginnings of what might be a forest. To the East nothing but rolling grass.

Strangely there doesn't seem to be anyone around. Not even the horses or oxen that were presumably pulling the wagons.

Not wanting to waste the opportunity provided by whatever that crash was (were there others held captive, like him?), Ghilbrizeth renders his flesh into vapor and seeps his form out through the steel cage and canvas. This close to freedom, he does not wish to lose it all due to haste, and he takes a moment to look around for the number of his captors, other covered cages like his own, and where his gear may have been placed: most might be hidden, but his longspear would be hard to keep out sight.

You notice signs of a fight. A rather one-sided fight, as there are pieces of what look to be your captors scattered around here and there. It's just none of the pieces are very big. Vyory

Once Vyory had escaped his crate, he gets up on top of the crate in a flash to take stock of his surroundings. While he is taking everything in he notices what appears to be a mist coming from under one of the other tarps. Upon seeing this he wonders to himself What in the world is going on here? No guards, no livestock, nothing. I wonder what else is in those other crates? I also still don't know who or what tried to read my mind a moment ago. If he hasn't noticed anyone yet, he shouts out loud "Is there anyone here?", then he starts rummaging through the wagon his crate was in first before moving on to the others if nobody shows up. As he is rummaging, he stretches his wings since he hasn't been able to while in the crate.

The bars might be far enough apart and there is a lock which might be picked. DC 17 to squeeze through or DC 20 to pick the lock.

Upon hearing the voice, Vyory cautiously makes his way towards the crate the voice came from while keeping an eye on the tree line to the west. As he moves up a sudden burst of wind originates from yet another one of the crates causing Vyory to get some distance from the caravan. "What kind of insane things does this caravan have?" Vyory wonders, "There is some weird mist coming from one crate, a whirlwind from another, a third is rattling, and a pixie was in the fourth?!" He doesn't say anything to the pixie just yet as he is thoroughly confused with what is going on at this point. As he hovers up in the air, he tries his best to keep an eye on both the tree line and the caravan.

I would assume anyone with even half decent hearing would hear Vyory as he hovers up in the air. The main reason he went airborne was to give him more options since it is his fastest mode of movement.

Reza reassembles himself, now resembling a small man who has been drawn in slightly smudged charcoal, all shades of gray except for dimly glowing orange eyes. He is surrounded by a faint haze and from just the right angle he appears almost translucent. If anyone stands next to him, they will notice a faint scent of wood smoke..

He sees what appears to be a small dragon and... some kind of fairy? Odd... but life is nothing but odd these days.
"Hello. Were you locked in one of these cages too?" he replies to whoever had called out.

He takes a look around and notices signs of a fight and smoke in the distance. "Looks like smoke down the road ahead of us." He gains a bit of altitude, trying to get a better look down the road but being sure to give the dragon plenty of space... he/she/it was probably feeling pretty twitchy right now...

The pixie gets out of the cage almost too easily. She makes sure she didn't squeeze out of anything else. Being in a cage wasn't too bad, but she'd rather not spend her first few minutes of freedom making more of an embarrassment out of herself than usual. "Eek!" Silhouette squeaks as she sees the human. She runs to the other side of her cage. She tried to flag down the tiny dragon and warn him about the human. "Hey, watch out! There's a human!"

The shadow listens to all of the noises the crashing and yelling and screaming. There were definitely people playing out there, sounded like all kinds of fun. Also he was feeling a little hungry. He tried to wiggle loose of his bonds and then sink down through the floor of his cage and under the cart, and then into the earth itself. From there he could comfortably move forward ever so slowly and from the cool shade of the cart peer out onto the road and see what all these people were doing.

Oh it looks like most of the people are done playing he thinks seeing all the body parts. Then being at his eye level as he sits with is body beneath the ground only the top part of his head sticking out he sees in front of him a bit of mister Wier's robe. Oh! Maybe there is something interesting with him he wonders as he quickly moves forward towards the bit of brocade robe.

He notices lazy plumes of smoke in the distance... that will mean people in houses. There could be someone strong to snack on there....

The Robe seems to have been badly burned, though perhaps not by fire. There are holes in it that look like they might be from a liquid spattering on it. Perhaps someone who could smell things might be able to tell more. There is also the corner of what might be a small book of some sort sticking out.

Rising out of the earth enough to reach out and slide the book from the robes, Hibr is perhaps not as cautious as he should be, forgetting he was hiding in his excitement of finding a book. He takes it out and begins to flip through it.

    Explosive Runes!

When Hibr pulls out the book, a pendant is dragged out along with it. The pendant is silver, and has what might be a stylized eye on it. You notice a similar symbol on the inside of the book's front cover. The book seems to be a journal or notebook. The language is, in Hibr's educated opinion, neither common nor undercommon. There are also some diagrams, doodles. A few notes in a different language (also not common or undercommon).

Fully interested in his new toys he completely forgets about hiding entirely and lays the book flat on the ground as he flips through its pages looking at the pictures and diagrams and searching for something more interesting than strange writing he cannot read. Half of his body in the earth while the other half is above the ground. he begins swinging the pendent in a wide circle absent mindedly so that it passes half of its orbit in the ground and then comes out again to finish its circuit in the air.

Does the symbol look like this:

It is not Boccob's symbol. In fact, even though Hibr is able to call to mind many eye-related symbols it doesn't match any of them, though it does look vaguely similar to a few associated with Vecna. The problem is that what seems like roughly half of all secret societies and cults use the eye as a symbol, so it's tough to pick just one out of a crowd.

Hoping to avoid startling anyone into doing something rash, he appears some twenty feet away, and approaches while visible. The hulking creature is shorter than most trolls, but just as broad. The small Shadow stops flipping through this boring book and turns to look at the direction of this voice. Oh, he looks big... and Strong dropping the pendant onto the open book he sinks into the ground as he moves towards this big creature all but the top of his head where his two vacant white eyes are, empty orbs in a sea of inky black, are submerged beneath the solid ground. As he nears he reaches out with his mind to speak: "♬♪Bellowing in the road a fellow big and bold, ready we make booty we take -- to get that which we're owed.♩♫♪" the tinkling sound of a child's laughter can be faintly heard as his sing song voice recedes.

He descends when he hears the shouted warning from below, but there is no human in sight. There are, however, two new members of this odd conclave. Somebody who resembles an ogre or oversized orc and a... he has no idea what it is. Had somebody been trying to start a zoo?

"Uh, hello, everyone. Anybody have an idea of what's going on? Who these people were or why they were after us?"
"Do Driderettes buy their legwarmers in bulk?"

Ghilbrizeth does indeed discover everyone's gear and weapons. His meticulous search also reveals a bill of lading listing the 5 creatures in the caravan and all of their gear. It indicates the ultimate destination was a place called Tarrak. There are also substantial rations suitable for humans and the other creatures present, though nothing for any undead who desire their particular sustenance.

    Ghilbrizeth:
The brush of mind against mind was unexpected: Ghilbrizeth had not encountered any similar powers since leaving the underdark. Sensing the innocuous nature of the contact, he listened, unsure what to make of the levity and playfulness of the voice. He and the voice had one area of agreement, at least: someone would pay for this imprisonment, for bringing Ghilbrizeth so near accepting another captivity. The troll sent a general sense of approval to the last line of the song.

Seeing the other entries in the logbook, the troll looks over the entries for the other former-captives. These were all unfamiliar creatures, and Ghilbrizeth wanted to learn what he could about them.

Passing the book to ... well, setting the book down where the others could read it, he silently pointed out the log's mention of their destination: Tarrak. Ghilbrizeth then focused on retrieving his possessions, donning armor and shield, arranging weapons and packs about his person. Withdrawing a few paces away, the troll adopts a look of concentration and begins carving a strange circular rune into the dust of the road with the tip of his spear, all the while listening to hear what the others might have to say.

    Spoiler: OOC:
