Favorite OOTS Character Tournament: General Discussion

I thought I'd make a thread for general questions, comments, and conversation about the tournament, and leave Present 2.0's Popularity Poll to be its own thing now.

The Character Popularity Poll thread was where everyone who wanted to ranked their 10 favorite OOTS characters and gave the top 10 points, the next 9 etc.

I decided it would be fun to run a 16-seed single-elimination tournament with seeding based on the points in the popularity poll. With input from several forumites it was decided to have the top four ranked characters face wildcards chosen from the characters ranked #13 and below.

All of the regular tournament matchups will be one on one, so the voting system is simple: vote for one of the two, or abstain, and whoever gets the most votes wins the round and moves on to the next.

The four blocks of wildcard candidates are a selection of one winner from a large group, so a more creative voting system was favored. In the end I decided to go with you can give each character in the block one nod, two, or none. Whoever gets the most nods gets treat... I mean, wins and takes one of the four lowest seeds in the tournament, facing one of the four highest seeds in the first round.

How was the division in blocks made?

I originally was just going to make block 16 just the bottom quarter or so, and make the other three blocks mixed. So block 13 would have the characters ranked 13-17 or so, and then fill from the bottom (what's not already in 16). Then block 14 would take the next few from the top (18-22 or so) and then fill from where 13 left off at the bottom. Leaving the middle of the field for block 15.

But then the race between 1 and 2 was so close, I changed my mind and decided to reward both with relatively weak wildcards. So instead I made the bottom quadrant 16, and the next higher quadrant 15. I still made 13 from a handful at the top of the wildcards and the rest filling from the bottom (more like from the middle, since over half of the bottom had gone to 15+16). Then the rest went to 14, drawing from the "middle" (but really almost the top.)

As it turned out this didn't work at all like expected, as the 16 Wildcard is looking to be the toughest competition of the four.

I'm not sure if I've made my rationale clear at all, but... Maybe? That's how they were selected, anyhow.

I have updated it to get rid of the two days of debate before voting rule that nobody liked and to add a column for winners and their margin of victory. In the case of Block winners, the margin column shows the margin between winner and runner up, and the name of the runner up.

I'm going to assume that meant:

"I selected some match-ups that looked like they'd be fun"
I'm California public/state school "educated" with no college/university, so I blame my lack of reading comprehension, for my.... lack of reading comprehension

It's based on the points in the initial "give points to 10 characters you like" round. Those with 1-4 points went in Block 16, those with 5-9 points in Block 15, and a variety of the characters with 10 points or more went in Blocks 14 and 13. Looks like characters with 10-18 points or 60+ points (aside from the top twelve) went in Block 13, and characters with 19-59 points went in Block 14.

Would have been more straightforward to put people with 10-25 points in Block 14 and those with over 25 points in block 13, but it's all good.

The idea was to reward the top few Wildcards by giving them less competition. I was originally going to make both the 13 and 14 blocks like that, but then decided I wanted 15 to be a little weaker, because the race between 1 and 2 was so close, which made 14 a lot more competitive (in theory, based on points. In fact, Wrecan the 16 block winner is a LOT more competitive than he should have been, based on points...)

I usually close the polls and declare a winner sometime in the late afternoon/evening, (US Mountain Time,) of the scheduled day.

I have occasionally forgotten and failed to close a poll as scheduled. If a winner has not been declared by me and it is still that day, in YOUR time zone, your vote will count.

Huh, I just noticed that one of the semifinals has all OotS members (probably) and the other has only one OotS member (Elan). That's a neat coincidence.

It would almost be better if Xykon had beaten Elan - then we'd have an OoTS group and antagonists + side characters group.

I can see the confusion: 2 of the quarterfinals started a few days ago, and we've already been talking about O-Chul and Redcloak likely meeting in the next round. But that'll be a semifinal match for them.

I should get the other two quarterfinal matches posted, then it'll be less confusing.

If O-Chul and Belkar win their respective matches, can we pretty please have O-Chul vs Belkar? I wanna know if there's some kinda rock-paper-scissors thing going on.

I've given this proposal serious consideration. Would it undermine the tournament winner's glory? Would there be any fun and drama to it? Are there any other matchups that also ought to be seen?

The conclusion I came to: the winner of the final is conclusively the winner of the tournament. However, there seems to be interest in ALSO having a round robin. The four characters who made the semifinals can also be considered to have made the round Robin. The last 4 matches of the tournament are the first 4 matches of the round robin, leaving only two left to play out:

O-Chul vs. Belkar

and

Redcloak vs. Vaarsuvius

I definitely feel like those are matchups a significant number of people would like to have seen. Also, whoever wins the tournament final (Redcloak or Belkar) will go into the Round Robin final with 2 wins and therefore in striking distance of ALSO being Round Robin champ. Or their opponent may act as a spoiler and force the Round Robin to end in a tie.

This sounds like fun now that I've thought it all through. What do others think?
