Athrusa isn't a Newtype, but she doesn't have to be a Newtype to feel the chill run down her spine when the red Sasha emerges and starts to tear through the disabled suits. "W-wh..." the young girl's expression dims as her eyes narrow. Her hands tremble for a moment as she expresses, "They weren't capable of fighting anymore! You didn't have to kill them!" Some part of her has no trouble swallowing that the Ragalians wouldn't give her the same mercy, though... and it's troubling.

    IVan Tessera

The Sasha looks towards the RAS Vengeance, examining it as Athrusa speaks. "How naive," IVan mutters to himself. The pilot of the other mobile suit doesn't sound experienced. He'll make his report to the AAF base first. He makes some taps on the console keys to double check his information as he speaks.

"This is the newtype operational component of the SA2-HA test vehicle, Lieutenant IVan Tessera. This unit has engaged and destroyed multiple enemy aircraft before the arrival of the Vengeance. Afterwards, was in a dogfight with 2 higher ranking units, including the possible commander unit, which has received significant damage, especially to its propulsion systems. The assisting unit deployed bits, one of which was disabled and captured. This Sasha prototype has received damage to the torso; combat effectiveness unaffected. "

He taps a button to stop transmitting after he concludes him message. The Sasha turns to address Athrusa's mobile suit. "The enemy mobile suit were still operationally capable of self-destructing, posing a tremendous threat to nearby friendly 'suits in the area. Ragelians will often detonate their units after being crippled. The best way to engage and neutralize a 'suit combatant is to target the reactor or pilot to prevent this instance from occurring. In short, they must be killed." It's true that IVan carries a similiar level of mercy the Ragelians to, possibly to a fault, but it's rooted in training and pragmatism. "Your actions have potentially put friendlies at risk. Has your unit had much training or experience when dealing Ragelians?" He didn't want to imply that the other people on the line didn't sound like a soldier. Surely, the Republic Alliance wouldn't send an amateur or civilian to operate a one-off mobile deployed on new model assault carrier. "Your unit is a heavy assault, correct? Using its heavier weaponry to destroy the tangos in a single shot would be a far more effective method of dispatching them," he finishes coldly.

Athrusa doesn't... really look like she's expecting the kind of response she's got. He sounds so cold...! Athrusa thinks, though it's true that there was a risk that friendlies could've been put in danger, especially because Ragalians aren't known for surrendering peacefully. Self-destruct... would they really do such a terrible thing to themselves? She hesitates for a moment, but at least addresses a tactical concern that she can: "The Captain t-told me to conserve the ammo on my heavy weapon in the case reinforcements appear. It only has three e-pacs."

Ugh, you sound like a really spoiled kid, Athrusa, she also thinks to herself, but relents on the issue as she starts moving to the rendezvous point with the Vengeance.

Having pulled off at the last second, Yuuki leaves the black suit to die in the Vengeance's firing line. She pauses for a moment, contemplating if the white suit is worth pursuing now that it's retreating, but decides instead to focus her firepower on the remaining mass produced suits. Without any mercy in her movements, she jets towards them and starts sweeping her beam gatling guns across them as they fly. "No mercy for you," she mutters under her breath. "Just like on Stetchkin."

    IVan Tessera

IVan thinks for a moment. The limited E-Caps would indeed be a limiting factor. Furthermore, it would be tactically devastating if Athrusa's unit were to be destroyed, especially before it would be able to employ it's armament. The Sasha, on the other hand, has armament intended for a longer engagement, with a beam rifle and fixed particle cannons drawing particles from the reactor. "Very well. The situation is worse than predicted. If there are no objections, this unit will provide you with an escort to the rendezvous point," IVan continues coldly. "This mobile suit is equipped for long mission endurance. Its wetware is expected to fight as long as possible." The Sasha pulls out its Guillotine Rifle with its free hand and falls into formation with the Lucifer Gundam.

He sends another message to the AAF base.
"Encountered friendly mobile suit. Escorting unit to rendezvous given by the RAS Vengeance."

Yuuki manages to come across another wing of suits that are trying to return to their carrier. They juke and weave, trying to evade the Shura's outpouring of firepower.

    Spoiler: Defense

Quickly trying to dodge the fire: (4d3-8)[-2]

Unfortunately, they're just not fast enough to get away. The Shura's weaponry shreds the entire wing in short order, showing the Ragalians no mercy. Their forces here have been thinned considerably between Yuuki's onslaught and the Sasha's earlier strike. The carrier's escort ships have mostly been destroyed, and the carrier itself is now starting to retreat from the area, damaged though it may be. The enemy has been thoroughly deterred from the area. Although they are still present, it's unlikely any of them will attempt to press the battle further. Of course, that doesn't mean the Gundam Team can rest easy just yet, but they have some breathing room, now.

    Spoiler: Boost Created

Action Deterred - The enemy is now disinclined to do anything other than retreat.

Meanwhile, IVan receives another message on the secure comm channel.

"Confirmed, Sasha. Your unit has been reassigned. Rendezvous with the RAS Vengeance, and report to its Captain. You will be debriefed and given further orders after the battle has concluded."

As the Sasha falls into formation with the Nephilim, data flashes through Athrusa's field of vision for a moment. Thruster output, structural analysis, probable weapon capabilities. A final piece of data lingers before fading:

    Newtype-use Mobile Weapon Probability: 98.992%

Something in the Nephilim is definitely awakening, though why it didn't react this way to Sazabi is probably a question for Athrusa's tech team once she gets back to the Vengeance.

The enemy this turn all spend their turns landing on the carrier. The Commander and his lieutenant manage to make it back aboard their ship, as does the white suit. A few grunts lag behind with damaged suits, but they're all close enough to the carrier that they will be covered by the ship's anti-air cannons this turn, making attacking them much more difficult.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show
This will be the last turn for this battle, though attacking the remaining enemy this turn is going to be more difficult due to them reaching the protection of their carrier's guns. It's now Athrusa's turn.

There's a quiet noise of discomfort as Athrusa replies, "Yes... thanks," trying to sound polite and not too rattled at the same time. If push comes to shove, she knows she's going to stick with Captain Brighton, who... has more of a talent for keeping together than she knows she ever will. She gazes towards the Shura as Yuuki puts the finishing touches on the enemy and expresses, "Great going, Yukki!" while hoping she wasn't still too angry at her...

"Pursuit of the enemy's going to be dangerous and puts me at risk of overextending. I'll perform salvage on the units left behind with the time we have left," Athrusa expresses, though her spine freezes for a moment when she gets close. The Sasha's attacks were really clinical... the weapons present are still available for procurement, and she'll take what she can without being too greedy.

Then she pauses as the systems onboard start to pulsate--

"H-hgh--" She trembles for a moment. "What's going on, Nephy...?" she asks to her suit for a moment. "What's got you rattled? It's okay... he's a friend. Right?"

The Nephilim's cockpit system seems to pause for a moment, the displays all freezing....before the marker on the central display that corresponds to the Sasha seems to blink for a few moments, before turning from yellow (unidentified) to green (friendly). They all return to normal a second later, showing the expected data.

The Nephilim is able to salvage quite a bit. Athrusa has prime pick of weaponry to choose from, including beam rifles and sabers, along with nearly-intact suits. If the Nephilim happens to have a recovery net available, she should be able to pull back two or three nearly intact suit bodies with all of their armaments. There's more there, but that's all that will fit in one net....

    IVan Tessera

IVan sends his last message to the AAF Base. "Very well. It's been a pleasure working for you. Lt. Tessera out." The words are a platitude. IVan had no particular preference.

"This unit's being transferred to the Vengeance. It is agreed the enemy mobile weapons are too far out for effective. engagement. The Sasha will assist with the salvage for the time being."
The Sasha flips it's sub-arms from the tips of its wing binders to pick up some of the salvage. As it works, IVan talks to Athrusa, as it seemed like a good idea to familiarize himself with the other pilots. "That is the Shura, correct? It's an impressive machine. The pilot isn't holding back either."

IVan gets to see the fruits of his efforts as he pulls the disable mobile suits closer. The attacks scored effective fatalities. He almost smiles. The Sasha begins its approach to the RAS Vengeance. "This is the Sasha, operated by Lt. IVan Tessera, reporting for new assignment. Requesting permission to land and deposit salvage."

One of the Vengeance's traffic controllers comes on the channel.

"Roger, that Lieutenant. You're clear for salvage deposit and landing on catapult 4. Do not enter the hangar, stand by for further orders. Captain Brighton wants all suits on alert until the enemy carrier has left the area."

Beacons flash up on the Sasha's display, showing the route to the indicated catapult. As the Sasha approaches, IVan can see a crimson suit standing at the very tip of the foremost catapult. A suit that he should recognize instantly from the history books. The towering, imposing crimson form of the Sazabi stands ready to do battle with any foe that comes too close to the Vengeance, its beam shotrifle in one hand and shield in the other. The suit that was piloted by none other than Char Aznable himself during the First Contact War, and only made possible by the rapid reverse engineering of the Ragalians' own mobile weapons. Its green mono-eye swivels to follow the Sasha's course for an instant, flashing as it registers the Sasha, before swiveling to a forward position once more. Captain Brighton's voice comes over the comm now.

"Welcome, Mr. Tessera. You and I have much to discuss once everyone's back aboard. For now, though, stay sharp. The Raggies are on the run for the moment, but anything can happen, as you well know. One of my crew has gone to fetch you and...Goldstein's tech teams from the station. You and your team are being reassigned to the Vengeance on orders from Admiral Gato."

Meanwhile, the Gyro Gundam finishes its salvaging effort and begins making its way towards the Vengeance, albeit a bit slowly, since its thrusters are still recharging.

And while it does, Yuuki receives another message over the encrypted comm from Captain Brighton.

"Yuuki, I need you to break off and move to escort that gold suit, the Gyro Gundam, back to the ship. I've received some rather disturbing reports about the pilot. I'm hoping it won't come to it, but keep a weapon locked on it just in case. There's something fishy going on and we'll need to sort it out, but I'd rather do that once he's out of that suit. The controllers have instructions to let him land first; you'll follow on the same catapult once he's in. Normally, I wouldn't even let him land, but I've been ordered to capture him alive, if possible, which makes this difficult. If he asks about you locking on to him, tell him you're having a targeting computer malfunction. Clear?"

With one last hard look at the fleeing Ragalian units Yuuki breaks off from another strafing run, and after a few moments of boosting settles into a flight path besides the Gyro. "Gabe," she transmits. "We've both been ordered back to the Vengeance. I dunno why, but you're supposed to dock before me, so I'm just going to be hanging just back behind you."

"Hey, sounds good to me. The Gyro's thrust system isn't fully charged, so the more the merrier." Gabe says, as the Shura falls into formation with him. Despite the Gyro's earlier speed, laden with salvage and not fully recharged, it barely manages to go faster than the Shura. It doesn't seem to be acting suspiciously, either, curiously enough, so whatever Captain Brighton's discovered about him must not be something he's expecting.

The enemy carrier finishes recovering the last of their forces and jumps away, leaving a trail of glowing particles behind it. Obviously, there's something wrong with its drives. Perhaps if the Vengeance is lucky, they'll disintegrate on downjump. With their departure, the area is finally relatively safe, for the time being.

There's an uncomfortable pause for a moment as the systems onboard designate Sasha towards 'friendly', and Athrusa lets out a sigh of relief as she pats it on the globe at the centre of her controls. "It's okay... I'm-- I'm sure Captain Brighton won't let us come to any harm." Wow, I feel crazy, talking to my own Gundam... but if there's someone she's putting all her faith in right now, it's the Captain... though she'd really like to be Yuuki's friend too, even if that feels like it might be hard right now...

The Nephilim doesn't have a recovery net right now, but that'll have to make do -- she sticks to more conventional weapons so that the team has some spares in case the unthinkable happens. ... that, and she's silently glad she doesn't, because the idea of dragging the torsos punctured through with what may have bodily remnants made her terrified.

The Nephilim floats nearby the Vengeance, awaiting the course clear to dock... and she-- patches privately towards Yuuki to go, "H-hey, Yuuki, good job out there! I just... wanted to say that. You were fighting at full power!" even if she can't stop the nervous hitch in her voice.

Captain Brighton's voice is distracted as she replies to Yuuki.

"Beside the fact that I didn't want to risk losing either of you to a ship reactor explosion? Well, for one, chasing enemies into their carriers' anti-air fire is a classic tactic that practically everyone uses. For two, there are civilians here that we're trying to evacuate, and I needed both you and Athrusa on station in case the Freedom needed an escort back, especially since our last shot with the hyper mega particle cannon wasn't a direct hit. I'm as disappointed about that as you are; I would very much have liked to destroy that carrier and be having you all mopping up the rest of them. For three, they may have reinforcements in the system. You've used a lot of your ammo, haven't you, Yuuki? I know you must still have gatling ammo left, but you're nearly out of missiles, right? What happens if we encounter a fresh carrier before we've had a chance to resupply the Shura? I didn't want you to be completely out if we get ambushed."

There's a long pause and a sigh. Yuuki can almost see Captain Brighton closing her eyes and rubbing the bridge of her nose.

"Look, I'm not happy about it, either. We can't stay too long in this system now; even if that was the only force they have here, it won't be for long. Destroying more of their suits just means they'll bring more carriers to the next battle. In a war of attrition, we'll lose, so we have to be careful and not overplay our hand. I know it's frustrating when all you want to do is destroy as many of them as you can, but right now, we have to take our own survival into consideration, too. We'll discuss this more later, ok? I need you to focus on the task at hand, if you can."

The Nephilim, meanwhile, is contacted by one of the Vengeance's traffic controllers.

"Nephilim, you're cleared for landing and salvage deposit on Catapult 5. Remain on deck, do not enter the hangar. Captain Brighton wants you on alert until the Freedom has returned. Clear?"

    IVan Tessera

The Sasha lands on the decks. The suspension vibrates weightily with the collision. Depositing the salvage, coffins to mauled corpses, the Sasha returns the glance with it's own green mono-eye. The Sasha has a heritage as well, of a disenfranchised warrior disgusted with the madness of the Zabi family, but fought the Ragalians to clean her own hands of blood.

IVan's spine tingles. The captain's unease is contagious. Of course, this probably has nothing to do with her statement, despite the fact that IVan has literally never seen anti-air fire hit anything, and he is not used to working under someone with this degree of concern over the safety of their pilots. It feels to him that he has been told everything.

IVan reaches out to Captain Brighton telepathically, assuming that she was a newtype. "Captain Brighton, if this unit may, it appears not everything regarding this situation has not been disclosed. Is there something that should be relayed to this unit, or is its apprehension unfounded?" His speech is dispassionate, but he is a little upset that he didn't get to personally kill every Ragalian in eye sight. He would like to agree with Yuuki, but it would be out of place in this situation to not fall in line. He has half a mind to ask what their plan was in the first place. He was retrieved for a reason, and judging from the captain's remarks, it was strategic.

Captain Brighton's response to IVan's telepathic message is tinged with both apprehension and distraction. He guessed right that she's a Newtype, and a powerful one at that.

"The full situation has not been disclosed yet, IVan, no. You guessed right, but it isn't fair to the other pilots if I tell you first, and I don't want any of you distracted by it. I'll explain once everyone's safely aboard and we can debrief everyone at once. In the meantime, I do have a question for you. In the time you've known Gabe Goldstein, have you ever noticed him acting...erratically? I realize you might not have had much time to get to know him; I don't have a complete picture of what happened here yet, just the bare minimum your people were able to relay during the fight, but anything you can remember or tell me might help."

"E-er, yes! I'm on it!" calls Athrusa back in turn towards the traffic controller. With a billow of the Nephilim's wings, it flaps a few times as it cascades down, molting feathers on its way to land onto the catapult deck and glide until it's towards a stop. She doesn't clamp the Nephilim's heels on the catapult rack or anything, keeping watch for any incoming enemies and the Freedom. "Whew... that was a really tough engagement..."

    IVan Tessera

IVan is a little taken aback at Cpatain Brighton's reluctance to fill him. He was an officer. If it was so important, he would expect to know in the event he would be expected to give order. Still, given the situation, the immediate presence of a superior officer, and his recent arrival under this command, he didn't think questioning would be the correct course of action. Some commanders will have varying styles. IVan will have have to adjust, even if he's used to a stricter style. He responds tersely, "Yessir, plain as day, sir."

The question about Goldstein also frustrates him. He wasn't used to dealing with hotshot, flyboy test pilots either. He was sure at all if he was qualified to answer such a question. Was it normal for a test pilot to act the way he did? IVan decides to answer to the best of his ability, and as objectively as possible. "This unit and the Gyro were deployed in anticipation of a Ragalian attack. A star of tangos were approaching at high speed, and the Gyro was ordered to ambush. This unit splashed two tangos with long range fire, but despite orders to remain in formation, the Gyro engaged at top speed to engage the commanding unit. This unit destroyed two more units and aided the Gyro, dealing heavy damage to the commander, then the RAS Vengeance arrived." he imparts. Agitated with how unhelpful this sounds, relents to his opinions. "In my professional opinion, I am unsure if I can provide information past what would be considered a pattern of subordinate behavior on the part of Goldstein in a regular, combat unit. My experience with pilots outside of regimented forces is limited." IVan wonders if being chosen for the testing program was the right move on the AAF in the first place. People so close to so many noncombatants was uncomfortable.

The Sasha observes the Nephilim land with its jade eye. The feather catch IVan's own eyes as the plumed mobile suit lands. He is entirely baffled. How does it do that, and how does it do that? "Does it always do that?" He asks Athrusa. "Are they some form of newtype weaponry?"

Athrusa sounds nearly surprised when IVan speaks to her again, but gives it a little bit of thought. "Umm... far as I know, nope. I'm not a Newtype and I don't think there's anything onboard that suit that requires it. There's... a lot we don't know about this suit -- it's ancient and mothballed until just a short while ago, and all the manuals and such are missing."

She bobs her head one way. "Best I can tell, though, the wing binders house a lot of micro-verniers, and the feathers serve two purposes -- they're generated to disperse heat in an even way, and also help cloak the suit against any opponents that rely too much on heat-seaking radar tech. It's how I got the upper hand on that red one that fired a lot of missiles!"

A pause, as she flushes and adds: "... and I think it's really pretty and cute. That counts for something, right?"

Interesting. A weapon of unknown design. This is entirely something IVan can see himself exploring. "What prompted that unit's reactivation, if no existing documentation was extant? This unit can test the newtype compatibility..." It's a certainly strange question to be asking, but it is a strange situation. Still, he could verify the newtype compatibility of the mobile suit himself with psychowaves from the Sasha's psychoframe. It wouldn't be the first time, as it was a good way of testing a MSN model's status without risking radio communication. He reaches out, just to check if there's a response.

While he's concentrating, he taps a few keys on the Sasha's console, checking the molting's thermal signature. "Interesting. As for being cute, there are some people who would agree," IVan mumbles, referring to the garish red and pink paint job on his favorite bad ass murder machine. The tech team head for the Sasha's development was an odd one for sure, typical for civilians, and she had colored the mech despite IVan's protests. "'Pretty and cute,' are often not considerations on the battlefield," IVan says more clearly. "It's more of a human concern."

Over the private channel with Athrusa, Yuuki hesitantly replies, "Yeah... you too."

She takes a deep breath in, and sighs deeply. I'm going to have to say it some time. May as well be now.

"And Athrusa... I'm-I'm sorry. About the way I treated you. The captain showed me some files about you."

To IVan: "... dunno, honestly... I'm-- I was just a backup test pilot, the way I heard it it was more a case of whatever's available," Athrusa says with the kind of surface level knowledge of someone who may not be privy to underlying bureaucratic or political decisions. She perks up just a little more, bashfully. "It's true... it's not exactly-- tactically advantageous or anything. But maybe it makes me feel just a little bit better, since there's not a lot of that to go around, ehe."

Well, not traditionally anyway, but the Nephilim's showiness /has/ been a tactical advantage as far as distracting the eye from other critical units...

Athrusa pauses at Yuuki, though, biting her lip. "H-hey, it's... it's okay, you know? You were having a really tough, stressed time. I'm really glad to hear that from you. And-- er, files?" Some part of Athrusa is definitely a bit scared; 'files' when relating to her tend to relate to... any number of reports and dossiers from her time on Qualia...

"Thank you, Mister Tessera. It might not be much, but it's something, and I appreciate it." There's a bit more worry wedged in with the gratitude in that thought. There's definitely something going on involving Goldstein, but what, for now, remains a mystery.

IVan's probing of the Nephilim reveals no psychic response to him. Either the suit doesn't have any sort of psycommu unit, or it's completely locked to its pilot's mental output only, with no remote capability. The former is much more likely, given the suit's stated age.

Out in the asteroid field, the Gundam Team can see through their sensor fusion with the ship that the Freedom has relaunched, and is carefully picking its way through the asteroids. It will take the suit about 20 minutes to reach the Vengeance.
Why is it Plan A is always, "Get 'Em!" and Plan B is, "Cause as much collateral damage as possible"?

    IVan Tessera

IVan pauses for a moment. It's not uncommon for aircraft to have multiple pilots assigned to it. Obviously, the senior pilot is the one who gets their name and rank on the side of the cockpit, but if there is a medical emergency or alert shifts, it wouldn't be uncommon for an alternate to be subbed in. This could apply to test type mobile suits as well. "That makes sense. So, how much training have you had? What happened to the other pilots?" IVan asks Athrusa. He didn't want to be too prying, but this dearth of information was making him uncomfortable. While he would never turn down the opportunity for combat, this holding pattern was making him anxious, and the more he hears about the situation, the more dire it sounds. "That mobile suit isn't responding to my interrogation. It likely lacks a psycho-communicator, unless... is there some kind of biometric system on it? It's unlikely, but there is precedent." Hopefully, it wasn't some kind of NT-D or EXAM system. Those machines can be tricky. "You're an unconventional choice for a pilot," IVan finishes coldly, replying to her comment about feeling better..

"Not a problem," IVan replies. It was, but not a major one. In the future, he would avoid relying on his opinion unless prompted. The Sasha tracks the Freedom with it's eye. It couldn't come too soon.

"U-um, just test runs, honestly," Athrusa admits to IVan. "This is like my... second real combat deployment... unless you count the one I nearly got cooked alive, and I don't really like counting that one. ... so I'm a bit of a novice, sorry..." She doesn't... answer the question of the other pilots. Thinking of Mathias, thinking of him in his last dying moments checking on her...

Athrusa sucks in a quiet breath as she stammers, "A-aah... well, now you-- um, well, it's... it's not like I wanted to keep it a secret or anything, Yuuki..." She can't really lie, she's kind of really fearing Yuuki reacting with disgust at her being a lab rat or... anything associated with that, really.

As Gabe and Yuuki near the Vengeance, the ship's controllers come on over the comm.

"Gyro Gundam, you are cleared for landing on Catapult 1. Shura, you'll follow the Gyro once he's clear."

Gabe sends a short acknowledgement as he begins his approach, slowing his suit in anticipation of rendezvous.

Before she lands to dock, Yuuki broadcasts another message to Athrusa. "Yeah, but I don't think I would've believed it if you just told me it." She pauses for a second and then laughs, sounding surprisingly genuine. "Actually, I didn't believe you when you just told me."

Once the Gyro Gundam lands on deck, she angles the Shura downward and starts killing off her thrust. "I do want to talk to you more once we're both off the suits, okay?"

"It's pretty out there, I don't blame you, but y-yeah... yeah!" Athrusa sounds a lot more relieved when Yuuki says that she wants to talk more with her. "That'd be great, Yuuki!" She can only hope that their relationship could improve from here. It'd be a real nice thing to have someone her age that she could really call a friend in a stressful situation like the Vengeance just trying to make it to port.
