Lost Mines of Phandelver IC

In the city of Neverwinter, Gundren Rockseeker has hired each of you to escort a wagon of goods to a village called Phandalin, a few days ride away from Neverwinter. He said he has some business in the village, that he and his brothers have found something big there, though he doesn't want to go into details, just that once you arrived in Phandalin with the wagon, you'd get 10 gold each as a payment.

Your latest scame didn't go as well as planned. You've been laying low and the crime boss you scammed hasn't found out who you are... yet.

So when Gundren Rockseeker, a dwarf you know from long evenings spent at taverns, mentions a job that would take you out of town, you accept the offer without much hesitation.

Gundren is a regular in a tavern you've performed in a couple of times, and he knows of your adventurous spirit. He's approached you with an offer: escort a wagon to small village nearby. It doesn't sound too exciting, but you get to travel and get paid for it.

One day your mentor Sir Adrik came to you to talk about his cousin Gundren. He and his two brothers were apparently going to conduct some business in a nearby village called Phandalin, and Gundren has been hiring people to escort some goods there. Gundren hadn't told even Adrik what he intended, since Adrik didn't want to sign up, just that it was something big, but Adrik was a little bit worried. He'd heard some disturbing rumours coming from the village.
Adrik wants you to accompany Gundren, and besides keeping an eye on his cousin, to check up what’s really going on in Phandalin.

You meet early in the morning by the wagon. It's loaded with various supplies and tools and Gundren is currently checking up on it with a middle-aged, broad-shouldered human man. Based on his appearance, the man could be either a soldier or a mercenary. He may seem familiar to some of you, and Nalan remembers seeing Adrik speaking with him once or twice.Two oxen are already connected to the wagon.

Gundren turns when he sees you and waves a hand. "Mornin’ lads and lasses, just checking everythin’s loaded. We should all try ta leave as soon as possible. I reckon it'll take a couple o' days ta get ta Phandalin. We'll be going ahead, ta set up tha camp, 'n meet up with me brothers."

"Well, looks like everything’s there. Remember, if ye can’t find me or Sildar once ye reach Phandalin, just look for Barthen’s Provisions, ol’ Barthen should know ta expect ye." Gundren and the man named Sildar are starting to get up on their horses.

This time Sildar speaks. "I don’t expect you’ll face too much trouble, but you should be cautious. These remote roads are never completely safe. Not enough people to guard them all…"

"Och! Don’t ye mind ‘im!" Gundren says and waves his hand dismissively. "He’s just overly cautious, well, part o' the reason why I'm working wit' him. Now, we’ve wasted enough time talkin’ ‘ere, let’s get going."

Gundren and Sildar leave on horseback, leaving you with the wagon.


Now, you can introduce yourselves and chat if you want.
Someone has to also drive the wagon (no proficiency needed). One other person can sit beside the driver, though there isn't really any room in the wagon itself.
You can describe what actions you are going to take during the travel (do you walk by the wagon, forage, etc...)

Mutt Foster Mutt looking a tad perplexed. His beard and hair cover almost all but his eyes which are pale green and pale blue. His gait is that of a Hunter. "Gundran is like a father to me so though I don't trust your kind I guess he has his reasons. Maybe he thinks we will have less trouble with such feasome representation. Maybe you threatened to kill him or he has a thing for the dark skin. Maybe you vexed him. It does not matter your on this trip now. I'll have my eye on you. Maybe I should be more forgiving given that I've no idea of my parentage but understand the history your kind has with the surface. I'm here at Gundren request. He said something about traveling through wilderness and there is no one better for the task than I. I go by Mutt until I find my true parents and I know my true name. Even before the travel starts, Nalan is already munchin on his trail rations. He is a big and friendly man, wearing chain mail and wielding a shield and a warhammer.

"Hello, friends! Pleased to meet you all. I hope our abilities put together will make for a safe and calm trip to our destination!"

He hoists himself up the cart with some difficulty and claims the conductor's seat. Turning to Mutt he says:

"You strike me as a competent hiker! A man of the woods and the wilds, are you not? We'd be safer if we had a scout, you know? Someone to walk ways ahead and spot danger before danger spots up. What do you say?"

Mutt Foster "That was the plan. Though I'd prefer to know who I'm spotting for as I've offered my name and none of you have. Where I'm from its just common manners to introduce one's self."

“Ha! A good question indeed!”

Nalan stands up atop the wagon making the wheels squeal under his considerable weight. He wields his shield proudly and claims:

“My name is Nalan! I am a paladin in the service of Torm, god of courage and self-sacrifice. This here next to me is Martin Riders, a fantastic storyteller and also a man of many talents."

"Our elvish companion is a new face to me. Have you been to Neverwinter before, miss? I can’t say we’ve met. But if Gundren trusts you, I too am your friend.”

Once Mutt has gone ahead to track he turns to talk to the mysterious Drow. So "Songbird" what's your real name? And how is a lady as lovely as yourself not already travelling to achieve great renown.

i kind of like that nick name "songbird"however my real name is sariel.i really just want people to learn that drow are an intresting bunch.we are either evil monsters or rebels or so thats what mom said.i just want to make enough gold and earn myself a story or song.id like to open an inn some day called the drunken spider. Mutt Foster When Mutt is out of site He transforms into a lion and begins patroling and scouting. Only 4 hours at a time then a short rest and so on and so forth.

You spend the last few days making your way towards Phandalin. The farther you get away from the city, the less travelers you meet. In a couple of days you stop seeing anyone else altogether. Though luckily you don't seem to meet any brigands or monsters either. The travel goes slowly (the oxen don't seem to be in a hurry), but Sariel's music helps you pass the time.

It's around midday. You're currently on a small road, named on the map as Triboar Trail. Mutt is scouting in a lion form, around 300 feet ahead of the cart. You know you should be arriving in Phandalin relatively soon, maybe even today. Gundren must be very anxious, waiting for you arrival.

You're walking on the small road, trying to spot any dangers lurking in the forest. So far, you've seen none. You think earlier you spotted a couple of wolves in the woods, but they ran away as soon as they saw your lion form. And when you take a turn, you can see two dead horses about 50 feet ahead of you, lying on the road in a bloody heap, with several black-feathered arrows sticking out of them. A crow is standing on top of one of the corpses, taking small picks out of the carcass.

What do you do?

Mutt Foster Mutt books it back to the cart. The lion bounces on his front 2 paws. He makes gentle roars. He turns around and points with his paw ahead and shrugs his head toward the spot. Hopefully that's sign enough to follow.

Hmm.she begins to muse things under her breath this lion hasnt atacked us and mutt keeps disappearing.mutt what have you found i will join you immediately

"Of course! We shall follow! Go forward, mighty oxen, into adventure!"

The oxen don't seem to be moved by Nalan's encouragement, but do keep moving ahead at a slow, steady pace.

The ox-cart follows Mutt-lion. You soon find out what he was trying to tell you: two dead horses are laying on the ground, with black-feathered arrows sticking from them. They look remarkably like the ones that belonged to Gundren and Sildar. From brief inspection, you can also tell they might have been dead for a day or so. The saddlebags have been looted, and there's also an empty leather container a few feet away from the horses.

However, you don't have long to inspect the scene. 2 arrows each fly from different sides of the forest, targeting Nalan and Mutt. Three goblins also rush you from both sides of the road.

Rarther caught off guard Martin goes to stab at the third Goblin, stabbing at it with both his rapier and his dagger, he seems to panicked for anything else.

The goblins don't manage to take full advantage of their surprise, though they do manage to score some hits on Mutt and Martin.

Despite being surprised, Martin manages to quickly skewer one of the goblins attacking him. Sariel's attack just misses one of the green buggers.

From the woods, one of the goblin archers sends an arrow towards the drow wizard, but it goes wide, hitting a tree on the other side of the road.

Nalan says a quick prayer and touches the lion creature with healing power. “May the blessings of Torm fuel your courage!”

The goblin in front of Mutt and Martin defiantly screams and attacks the rogue with his scimitar. The goblin on the other side of the road meanwhile strikes at Sariel.

The goblins attack fiercely, but none of the attacks hit. One strike almost hits Sariel, but Nalan blocks the attack with his shield. This elicits more harsh words in Goblin from the ambushers.

Martin recoils a little bit after running the first goblin through, but quickly quells his rising panic and turns to the other goblin Mutt was fighting. If he would kill one of these he instead goes to render it unconscious, as he knows the value of information well.

Martin fumbles with his rapier, almost dropping the weapon. The goblin sneers at him, and in his overconfidence misses Martin's dagger. The dagger makes a nasty cut on the goblin's forehead. The creature screams and stumbles. It falls and hits its head on a rock. Despite the wounds, it looks to be merely unconscious.

Goblin 3 is unconscious. Sariel's turn.

Ominous sounds fill the air arond the goblin in front of Sariel. The goblin clutches its head, obviously discomforted, but manages to shake off the effect.
