Savage Fallout Chapter 1: Smoke at the Manor

*As he listens, Tam pulls a small bottle of purified water from his pack, offering it to her, while taking a long drink from his own canteen. It had been a long time since he'd had to worry about radiation, diseases, or any kinds of parasites that might be in the water. He almost felt bad for any critters living in the liquid. They didn't stand a chance against his body.*
"hmm...."

*Taking a moment to think, he stares out at the middle distance. Something pulling at the back of his brain. Something he'd heard? Some distant memory still shrouded in the deep, foggy recesses of his brain.*
"I.. heard something once, I think?"

*He frowns hard, concentrating to pull the threads of his memory together, though even when he manages what little he can, he's sure it isn't a perfect recollection.*
"Every man with a statue made of him was one kind of slag or another."

*Giving the thought a moment to settle, he finally grunts and screws the lid back on his canteen, letting it hang on its lanyard.*
"Nah. Ain't right. But close. I don't figure there's anyone whose managed to survive in this world that hasn't done things that would have given people screaming nightmares and squirting bowels back before this. It ain't right to judge things as good or evil anymore. Only what you can do, and what you can't. At the end of the day, sometimes the only thing you can do is survive by being the coldest, meanest and most ruthless thing still breathing. That ain't evil, and I don't judge nobody, 'cause there's gonna come a day when I'm staring at my own hands, wondering if I could have done things different, you know?"

*Crossing an arm over his chest, he stretches out his shoulder and groans softly before switching sides.*
"Alright. Enough feeling sorry for ourselves, eh? It doesn't suit you. What do you say we go knock some skulls together and figure out what's going on here, eh? We'll have time for moping when we're bunking down and hoping the deathclaws don't come sniffing at us while we're out."

*Grabbing his equipment, he gives her a playful nudge and chuckles.*
"Keep this up, and maybe I'll tell you the secret about who I really am, huh? Ever hear the story about the sword and the stone?"
*His chuckle turns into a guffaw at his own joke, but his feet keep propelling him ever forward, in the direction of their next step to finding the girl.*

The pair headed north, following what looks like an old road that has since become a dirt track. They pass by and old rotting dock and several rotted hulls of boats. It takes a few hours, and its nearing sunset, as the pair rounds a bend in the old highway and turns past an old truck hanging off the road towards the Cathedral.

The highway cuts through the side of the hill, a steep hill leading down to the swamp on the west side and the rest of the hill leading up to the Cathedral on the right, the top still half a mile away.

As Tam and Mable round the corner, Tam hears some brush rustling off to his left and dives behind a nearby ruined car, while Mable dives into the ditch on the right side of the road, as some Raider fires a shotgun blast where they both where standing.

*Lets get some initiative in here*

Mable pokes her rifle up over the rim of the ditch and fires a shot off at the Raider that fired first.

The hit raider, rolls behind a log, trying to keep from getting hit again. Another Raider comes out of the swamp and fires a burst at Tam

*As the rounds slam into Tam, ripping past his shield and sending him sprawling, his vision falters for a moment, his brain trying its best to hide the fact that he'd just been grievously wounded. It didn't make sense, it didn't help anything, but the self preservation instinct is what keeps Tam moving as he drags himself over to a small rubble pile, his left arm not responding correctly, dragging the heavy shield as he goes.*

*Despite his wounds, and the alarming way everything is suddenly black and white, he calls out to Mable.*
"Mabs - I'm hurt. Don't stick around and put yourself in danger. You get the chance, take off, hear me? Get the package home. That's what matters!"

Mable only response is to growl as she drops her FN and whips out the shotgun, letting loose blasts of shotshells at the raiders. The buckshot rips through two of the raiders, pulverizing their chests as she rains 12 gauge rounds into them. The last raider starts to run.
