The Black Shingle Fiasco II: Electric Boogaloo

Fion positions himself in between Avita and the enemy, holding his hand out.

"Give it here when you're ready"

While your party huddles behind the cover of the wall, Avita ties a rope around her torch and hands it to Fion. He takes it, leans around the corner, and hucks it toward the barrier. It flies forward, and passes through the energy barrier as if it isn't there at all. You hear a dull, metallic thunk as it hits something on the other side.

I'm assuming all of you are staying out of the line of fire, since that seems sensible.

Avita continues to pour black energy into herself.

"You held onto the rope? You held onto the rope, right?"

"Theory: unless the whole wall's an illusion, it only stops or affects living beings. Maybe unconscious or recently deceased ones as well. I wonder what would happen if we were to toss one of those peasants halfway through the barrier? Maybe it would part, like a waterfall? Or if we picked up the two corpses and used them as shields, perhaps we could push our way through without being zapped ourselves?"

"I'm not too sure for throwing dead bodies in the wall to see if it's a trap or not. There has to be another way." Pamela facial expression was unsure about Sarrazin comments.

With a blank expression, Fion held the rope up to Avita's face before turning to Pamela "There is no shame in using a corpse to protect the living. The person who was once there is gone and moved on, we can deal with proper burial later."

"Indeed. Never waste a perfectly good corpse, as my trainers used to say," Sarrazin drawls.

[Bartmanhomer]

"Ok......my goddess Ehlonna wouldn't be, please." Pamela feel very regretful about it.

[Marlowe]

Avita snaps her teeth. "So now that we're in darkness and the light's on the other side will somebody take a look at what's now illuminated? Then drag the thing back, toot sweet?" She continues to pump the black energy into herself.

Charnal Touch Healing for (1d8+1)[8]

A crossbow bolt embedded in her arm finds itself forced out by an eruption of scar tissue and pops out, hitting the opposite wall with a *bing*.

"And once I'm feeling all shipshape and Bristol fashion, and our friends on the other side have been disposed of, I'm quite willing to just walk into the barrier and report the experience. As long as I'm conscious, I can keep putting myself together."

EDIT: That puts Avita back to full health.

"But it would be much more amusing if Fion and I toss you through the barrier," Sarrazin deadpans, then risks a quick glance around the corner to see if the torch is lighting anything up.

Fion just rolls his eyes as he pulls the torch back slowly, making sure that Sarrazin has ample time to look around.

Even from behind the barrier the torch seems to be illuminating the sewer naturally, casting orange light onto the walls and ceiling. Then, there is a splashing sound and something causes it to go out. Fion pulls on the rope and it comes back with a severed end, and missing the torch.

"What? You what?" Avita slams her teeth shut on what she actually wants to say, and rounds the corner, keeping her left hand scraping along the sewer wall, and throws a Kilgours Grave Mist spell centered as far as she can on the other side of the barrier.

You can't see the chilling fog cloud appear on the other side of the barrier, but Avita knows her spell has gone off. You hear a loud, shrill screech and then the clanking of metal that gets farther away.

[Marlowe]

Avita flattens herself against the sewer wall, only a few feet from the glowing barrier, and counts to twenty-four in her head, waiting for the cloud to disperse.

After she gets to seven, it occurs to her that lying down is probably a decent enough option, so she does so.

Sarrazin waits patiently for Avita to complete her suicide run, unwilling to rush the barrier until he knows her spell has run its course.

"What do we do if she gets fried or feathered going through the barrier?" he asks Fion.

Exactly twenty-four seconds pass. The commotion on the other side of the barrier grows distant, then stops altogether. Kremp shifts restlessly. "If she wants to be the first one through that, I won't stop her."

Avita stands up, faces the barrier, starts pumping her charnal touch into her chest, and steps forward quickly. Hoping to get through the barrier as fast as possible.

Avita steps through the barrier as if it isn't even there; from the other side, it seems to be transparent. From there, she quickly takes stock of the situation.

Ahead the sewer runs forward around thirty feet, comes to an intersection with another section of sewer, and then curves sharply to the right. A dim, kaleidoscopic glow is coming from down that tunnel, bathing it in shafts of multicoloured light. The butt of her torch is protruding from the thick mud at her feet, its flaming end having been shoved deep into the sewage.

There is no one in sight.

Avita picks up the torch and waves to the party, keeping her cloak held out to mask the light from the enemy.

No damage to me at ALL? Negative energy? She speaks, in as low a voice as she can hope to reach her team-mates. "Fion", she says. And waits for him to approach before she proceeds in a still quieter voice. "I wasn't hurt at all, but that might just mean it's an entropic field that wouldn't have effected me anyway."

She locks eyes with him, torch held low beneath her face. "I'm afraid that means it's your turn. If it doesn't hurt you, it should be safe for the others".

Fion just grunts as he lowers his head and tries to plow through the wall.

Pamela smiles a bit and thinking about something else about this mission.

Moving up with Fion, Sarrazin speaks quietly to Kremp. "Well, Corporal, it would seem our foe has fled. Besides the unexpected occupants, is this section of the sewers as you remember it? And is this even the right way for us to be going to reach our destination?"

As he speaks, Sarrazin also busies himself checking on the peasant that touched the wall to see if he or she is alive or just unconscious.

Fion steps through the barrier, also with no effect. A moment later it flickers once, then vanishes. Kremp cautiously creeps forward next to Sarrazin, keeping an eye on the passage ahead. "This all looks right," she murmurs. "I think the demonic base, the portal, should be just ahead down this tunnel. But I'm wondering why we aren't encountering more resistance. I was expecting to be up to my elbows..." Meanwhile, Sarrazin checks on the peasant. He seems to be alive and unwounded, but completely limp and comatose.

Suddenly, as if from nowhere, three large, ugly crossbow bolts are hurtling down the tunnel towards Fion. One misses, another leaves a dent in his breastplate, but the last gets through a gap in his armour, tearing into his leg.

Just before the arrows hit Fion, the three of you see something - a disturbance in the air on the opposite end of the tunnel. The bolts appear, punching through what seems to be a hole in the air and speeding toward Fion.

Fion takes 9 damage.

"What the Nine Hells was that?" Pamela was confused and saw Fion got shot by the bolts. "Fion!"

"I don't know; Pamela." Avita speaks low, jamming her torch into her quiver bright-end first and leaving the Corporal's lantern the only light source. "Why don't you tell us what you saw so the rest of us can figure it out?"

"Someone shot Fion. We're being under attack." Pamela warns Avita.

"I can spot that for myself, you Elven child." Avita's voice is sounding like something out of the pit. "I'm asking you what did YOU SEE?"

"Are you deaf or something?! I SAID SOMEONE SHOT FION! WE'RE BEING UNDER ATTACK!" Pamela is furious that her leader is hard of hearing

Avita, still unsure of which direction the shots are coming from, reaches out and flattens herself against Fion's back. Covering that side of him from further fire. The Elf cannot parse Common. Well, let her shout herself a target in the dark, she thinks.

But what she says is; "Corporal, mask your lantern."
