    “THANKS!” Dergosh yelled gratefully at Three as she dragged him to the side of the cart. He heroically stumbled to his feet, the latent poison coursing through his bloodstream making him light-headed and queasy. He gulped down the nausea as he blurted out a spell.

    A pair of four-foot long black claws, the claws of Luthic the Cave Mother, materialized around the cleric’s wounds. Though the claws looked like they could tunnel through rock (because they could, in fact), they ministered to his wounds with gruff efficiency before turning to a brittle black powder and falling to the ground, leaving a lingering ursine scent in their wake. The half-orc’s visible wounds were much reduced, if not the lingering effects of the centipede poison.

    Gakan screamed internally and climbed back out.

    Afternoon, Fourth of Kythorn, Year of Lightning Storms (1374 DR)

    The Company scrambled to better defensive positions, Three dragging Dergosh out of the swarm, Gakan deciding it might not be a good idea to be lying on the ground with millions of tiny bugs around.

    The queen turned its attentions on Kuros, standing out and isolated from the rest of his pack. Shifting slightly in its position, the centipede’s mandibles lashed out at the big silverbrow with eyewatering speed.

    But the big man’s shield was faster still, and though there was a bang hard enough to make (one of) Kuros’s arms go numb for a second, the thick, heavy steel held against the massive jaws.

    There was a strange smell of something in the air – an acrid smell. The odour seemed to billow from the whiptail centipede. Just as suddenly, the centipede swarm changed direction. It swarmed across the rocky ground towards the silverbrow. Millions of centipedes crawled over him, biting, tearing at his skin. But he’d been born from stock as hard and thick as dry wanderwood, and the poison in every bite was pushed away.

    As was the awful sensation of being crawled over and into by millions of tiny insects: Kuros had been in situations as bad, if not worse, and insects that only crawled and bit was nothing for him to break under.

    Korlann watches as the swarm moves on Kuros, a calm smile crossing his face - not because of the swarm moving towards Kuros, but rather because of the Whiptail shifting slightly towards him. Enough so that it placed itself within his striking distance. With a shout, he lashes out at the creature with two swift swipes of his spines, attempting to drive his spines between the segments in order to cause the most damage he can.

    Kuros has never been more thankful for his scaled hide as he was at this moment. It kept the feeling of the scuttling Centipedes to a minimum and allowed very limited avenues for them to bite. Limited did not mean no avenues however, as the space around each scale was enough for the tenacious insects to sink their mandibles into and fill Kuros with their poison. Luckily, the reduction in quantity allowed Kuros to endure. He strode forth to slay the queen with his Hammer whistling through the air.

    Gazing over the edge of the cart, a grim look of determination fixed itself on Dergosh’s face as he saw the Wolftooth clan rally and take the fight to the big bug. He stormed forward, around Kuros’ startled horse, reaching back over his shoulder as he ran. His calloused hand felt for the iron ring on Ilnevel, his fighting spear, clamping down on the shaft and yanking it from its place across his back. He shifted his grip towards the center of the weapon, planked his foot, and heaved it towards the bug’s snapping mandibles.

    Three was partially right- something was at play. Unfortunately, it wasn’t something she could communicate with. Hoping that the death of the whiptail meant the dissolution of the swarm, Three hurled herself bodilly off her wagon for the second- and gods willing, last- time today. While Kuros and Korlann didn’t seem to have hit the beast at all, Ruk buzzed into the sky. Up, straight up, bearing a precious flask of oil. The little pseudodragon whipped across the foggy air, releasing the orb from its claws.

    It hit. Acid sizzled across the whiptail centipede’s form, making it rear suddenly with a rage-filled chittering that filled the air. Ruk arced around in the air, waiting for the right moment.

    Having got herself back in the wagon, Three went for her longspear again and began to jump down off the other side. If they could hang on for a few moments more--
    Black lightning rolled through the fog. Mandibles and teeth exploded into motion.

    It caught her in midair, an awful crumping sound as her chest was caved in by the creature’s powerful jaws. Lights flashed before her eyes, arcane symbols flickering in and out of existence within her head, as the system malfunctioned. Acting to protect itself, critical systems took a survey of the situation, shook their heads sadly, and promptly pulled the plugs, conserving power to protect the vital systems.

    Three’s eyelights, such as they were, went out. Her body went limp. The centipede dropped her form, head swaying and looking for another target.

    Yeah, so, that AoO was a hit (rolled 15 for a total of 23, concealment was – dreadfully – a roll of 23, which barely passes.) Damage of 13 hitpoints, which by my count puts Three at -6 and prone in H7. Warforged don’t bleed out, but she is inert and unconscious (though it’s fine if almonds keeps talking OOC.) At least she soaked the AoO for this round.

    Ruk does 2 hitpoints of acid damage, marking the first scratch you’ve put on this horrible thing.

    Seeing as Three going down might alter how your characters react, Mercurion_2, if you want to change what Dergosh does with his action this round, that’s fine. kjel, you’re up.

    At last, Gakan came sprinting into the fray. The queen looked to be momentarily distracted with Three, and the catfolk slashed his claws in, diving in at a junction of chitinous shell and drawing a satisfying, if superficial, spray of ichor from the wound he'd generated.

    The sudden arrival of another ally seemed to trigger something off in whatever passed for the queen's head. It wheeled and turned to retreat, maybe - as some of the Company speculated later, after it was all over - trying to get back behind the swarm and force them all to come to it.

    Kuros's instincts took over. The silverbrow's hands wheeled, the lucerne hammer gleaming moist from the fog around them. He had perhaps a split-second of time in which to execute the strike, as black coils seethed around him and red eyes flashed.

    The hammer blurred in its arc. Kuros's massive hips tilted, his whole body behind the strike.

    It caught the queen clean between the eyes. Driven with hundreds of pounds of force behind it, the weapon's head crashed straight through the protective plates of the queen's head and smashed what lay below to paste.

    The queen's back arced suddenly, and it gave a high, dying screech. The Company members (those left standing) took a step or two back as the creature's death throes left it squirming in the path, sending gravel and small stones flying. A pungent stink of centipede pheromones filled the air.

    Kuros suddenly realised he was still standing in the midst of the swarm - only to look down and realise that too was now writhing, dying, millions of insectoid bodies writhing on the ground and moving in a thousand different directions. Those centipedes still on him fell away, and the swarm dissipated, no longer a single, focused force, but only a collection of insects seeking shelter in a hundred different directions, walking dazedly in circles, or outright dead.

    There was a final crump as the queen's thirty-foot length collapsed over the lip of the rock wall of the road cut and was still. The path to the top of the hill was clear - as was a path to what seemed to be a cut in the rock a little further up the way.

    They'd won.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

    No, seriously.

    Whiptail Centipede went to move towards D13. I started with Kuros's AoO first.

    He scored a natural 20 (thus, 27 total, not that it mattered). Concealment check passed at 43. Critical confirmation roll was 21 total. Thus, damage = 2d4+7 x4 = 12 total x 4 = 48 damage, which is a kill shot. My eyebrows rose higher and higher as the numbers came in.

    Way to go, team!

    So, some other important bits and pieces:

    - That's 525 XP each for you guys.
    - In terms of treasure -- have a look around.
    - Three is obviously still down at -6 hitpoints.
    - Dergosh had two poison saves to make. He rolled 18 and 8, which are enough to save against both remaining poisons.
    - Korlann had one poison save to make at DC 11. He rolled 4. His Fort modifiers will never get him high enough for that. So unfortunately that gives him DEX damage of 1d4 = 2 DEX damage. Ability damage comes back at 1 point per day, or double if the character gets complete bed rest.
    - Kuros had one poison save to make. He rolled 16, so, he saves against the poison.

    Kuros stands there panting for a moment, feeling the soreness he felt in his arms and feeling grateful that it meant he was still alive. Swinging his hammer against the head of that Centipede felt like swinging against a boulder, and Kuros eyes his weapon critically to make sure it didn't get damaged by the impact before stowing it on his back. His other weapons are sheathed as well and his hands are already busy wiping the ichor from his body.

    Then Kuros notices that Three isn't moving.

    "Three?..." Kuros asks hesitantly before he starts moving towards the unmoving form panic growing in his voice, "Three! Are you okay!?" Kuros dashes the final distance to the still form of Three and is close to shouting at this point, "W-What do we do? Is Three dead? Would a potion help? I-I..." Kuros' arms flail about randomly showing the Silverbrow's state of disarray at their fallen comrade.

    Korlann can only watch as the creature tries to retreat, and as Kuros strikes a fatal blow on the Whiptail. As the rush of battle subsides, he registers the burning within his veins of the creature's poison - not enough to be truly crippling, but certainly enough to slow him down. He frowns for a moment, gingerly making his way towards Kuros and Three. "Nicely done, Kuros," he says, kneeling next to the Warforged. Inspecting the fallen construct carefully, he says after a moment, "Three of Three will be fine - I've seen similar constructs before, and they are designed to safeguard their vital systems. If you just pour a potion over her face, her own construction will handle getting it where it will work best."

    The satisfying crunch of the big bug’s head was a welcome noise to Dergosh. He walked forward, grinding a few escaping centipedes under the heel of his boot, as he went to retrieve his spear, clapping Kuros and Korlann on their backs as he passed by. It wasn’t until he had picked up the black-hafted Ilnevel and thrust into its sheath across his back that he noticed the commotion around Three.

    Glancing up the hill into the fog, wary of any further attacks, he marched over towards the warforged and watched as a potion was splashed on her to little effect. “Hmmmmm,” he rumbled, moving down towards Three’s feet. He crouched down, yanked her boots off, and looked for bug bites that might be contributing to her unconsciousness. Not seeing anything, he shoved the boots back on and stood up to examine her.*

    “Can’t do much until I talk with Gruumsh tomorrow.” He scanned the area, not liking the situation. “Not good place to stop, but could be more bugs up hill.”

    There wasn't an immediate reply to the half-orc's thoughts from the party. But there was something else, a little waft in the air from further up the pass. The fog in the road cut was as moist as ever, but there was something familiar about this waft of wind, some faint sheen of cold on it that he recognised.

    Well, somebody needed to go check if there were any more big bugs around.
    "Stay here," said the half-orc gruffly, and turned east, up the road cut. "I'm going see if we all dead by sunset."
    Fog enveloped him, and he vaguely remembered some sort of Hold on, wait from the rest of the group, but for all of that, he still had the dose of familiarity in his nose and mouth, and with it was a big, friendly and spiritual arm around his shoulders from Gruumsh, so he stamped into the mist without fear.

    He found the source of his familiarity a good number of paces out from the wagon's position. He wasn't far from the end of the road cut, where it climbed out and the path carried on up the hill. Here, the fog had hidden the entrance to a cave from view. The opening was a good ten feet wide, and it went back into the hill beyond the range of his vision. There was the stink of what he guessed could be centipede droppings, but no noise of chittering, and on a moment carefully looking around, no noise of feet, tiny or otherwise. And the familiarity of it from his past crescendoed. He'd been in caves like this before. Long ago.

    Dergosh struck a torch to life and stamped into the cave, Mom's mace in the other hand poised to strike. But nothing came to die on his weapon. The cave was speared with grey stalagthingos from floor to ceiling, said ceiling being a lot higher than he could jump. It was a rough circle of a cave, too. Plenty of room to get the wagon and the animals in here and have space over to sleep. He made a quick circuit of the cave's perimeter in the flickering light of his torch to confirm there weren't any other passages out of here. Nor much in the way of leftover meals from the centipedes, thankfully.
    Except for one spot.
    It was close to the cave's entrance, oddly enough. Dergosh found it just as he was finishing his walk around the cave: a small pile of rags and a pouch of some kind. The pouch contained a small wad of gems and gold, not that the centipedes would've cared obviously. More interesting were the other two items he found: a wand of some kind and a two-foot-long piece of rusting iron with a large number of doodles, writing, on it.

    He concentrated for a moment. Gruumsh's blessing took hold of him.

    The wand flowered with the aura of a transmutation spell. Constant, but faint.

    The piece of iron itself was not magical ... but three of the squiggles along its length were flaring, with the aura of a transmutation spell. Constant again, but faint. And odd: he'd learned to associate this particular aura as that given by a magic item, but it somehow also was the aura of something given by a magic spell. It had some similarities with scrolls he'd seen, but again, only the writing seemed to be magical.

    Cave is about 70 feet up from the wagon's current location. The cave is roughly circular and 40 feet high with a 40 foot radius. The entrance is well big enough to admit a wagon and animals.

    The stuff you found:
    - Wand: emitting a Faint Aura of Transmutation School
    - 3 magical squiggles on a piece of rusting iron: each is emitting a Faint Aura of Transmutation School
    - 100 gp
    - 4 exquisite-looking rubies.

    Kuros, seeing that his potion did not do much, drops his head in sadness, hoping that the Warforged has a means of self-repair. He picks up Three as carefully as his six arms will allow and stores the Warforged in the back of the wagon. Kuros then goes about the task of collecting all the animals and making the company ready to set forth when he notices that it is oddly silent amidst the company. Looking around, Kuros thinks for a moment before calling out, "Where did Dergosh go?"

    As the excitement of battle faded, Ruk spied the party huddling around the crumpled form of Three. He attempted to call out, but only a reptilian squeak escaped his Pseudodragon mouth. Frustrated, he buzzed around impotently and anxiously, zipping back to the wagon to rummage through his bag in search of potions.
    After hearing that she was still alive, he calmed a bit and waited for his form-shifting spell to end.

    Dergosh breathed in deeply, a big inhalation of sharp, stony air. Cave air. Good air, even if centipede stink lingered. The cooler temperature in the cave had reduced the fog considerably. He looked in from the entrance, using his Gruumsh-given darkvision to check for threats before he struck a torch and probed further.

    ~~~
    The half-orc growled, a low-rumble grinding around in his barrel chest as he looked on at Three’s inert form. He didn’t like bugs in the best of circumstances, and seeing the warforged’s supine form did not improve his opinion of them. He ground a few already-dead centipedes under his boots and strode up to the edge of the wagon. Unceremoniously, he dumped a pile of coins into the bed of the wagon, with four red jewels spilling on top of them. “Found centipede cave up hill. No more centipedes, though, look like we kill them all. Make good place for Wolftooth to stop for night, maybe see if can heal Three tomorrow.”
    Remembering the other baubles he had found, he paused for a moment: normally he would have handed them to Three to deal figure out, but with the artificer down he wasn’t sure want to do so he spoke to the whole group. “These, too,” he said holding up the two items. “Magic. Squiggles on metal stick magic too.”
    Willing to hand them to whoever seemed interested (and keeping them until Three was, hopefully, back on her metal feet otherwise), he walked over to Baghtru and took the horses reins, prepared to lead the group up to the possible resting place of the cave.
    Morning, Fifth of Kythorn, Year of Lightning Storms (1374 DR)
    Weary, sore, and bleeding in a few places, the Company trudged up the path to the centipedes' cave that Dergosh had found. At least the cave proved to be as suitable a campsite as it was a nest; there was some natural flue in the roof of the cavern that conducted the smoke from their hastily-assembled campfire away. And though the fog didn't seem to be lifting at all, the distant sun somewhere cast the mist a golden haze, sending a warming radiance of light into the cave.
    They settled in for the evening, mostly nursing the wounds they had or calming down from the battle adrenaline of the day's earlier events. They set watches; but though at one point Korlann spotted the eyes of some marsupial-ish creature off down the pass, the creature disappeared into the fog and didn't trouble their rest at all.
    The fog still hadn't lifted by morning. That said, Gruumsh had visited his cleric with blessings again, and the day was looking to be a lot brighter than the previous one had been.
    Onto Forage checks: Three's out and Ruk doesn't need to eat until tonight (5 Kythorn), but everyone else is going to need to forage for food and water for 4 Kythorn (Survival or WIS check at your choice). It's a DC 15 check due to the foggy conditions; success means you gather enough food to eat without consuming your rations, failure means you check off one of your trail rations, as usual. If one person succeeds on at Forage check, you find enough water to refill everyone's waterskins; if everyone fails, you'll empty your waterskins and hope that you get better luck tomorrow night.
    Other than that, it's morning on 5 Kythorn, you can consider yourselves to have gotten a full night's sleep if any natural healing is to be applied, and Dergosh has all his spells back. The cave looks to be about half an hour from the summit of this great hill, and once there you hopefully should be able to finish mapping out this hex.
    The darkest recess of the cave was the best place to listen to the shouted instructions for the day from Gruumsh One-Ear, and that was where Dergosh was when Ruk returned from looking for food. He had checked around the cave, thinking maybe even centipede meat might make a useful meal, but there was nothing left here that even his orcish blood would allow him to choke down so he instead focused on the echoing sound of his god’s voice reverberating around the cave, even if he was the only one that could hear it.
    Instructions received, the cleric strode over to check on Three. Seeing the warforged still inactive, he lumbered up into the cart and knelt next to her. “Hhhrum,” he grumbled, reaching into his pouch and withdrawing a small vial containing a thin, runny, green-tinged liquid. “Three,” he announced to her supine form, “this troll blood from home lands of the tribe.” Uncorking the bottle, he took some of the liquid on two fingers and rubbed it under where Three’s nose would be if she had one. “Cave Mother say time to return to fight with the Wolftooth Clan.” He leaned in close and screamed in her ear hole, “GET UP!”
    He sat back on his heels and waited. Slowly, a ghostly image overlaid portions of Three’s anatomy, an image showing gears slowly starting to turn, pulleys beginning to go up and down, and a flywheel spinning with gathering speed. Dergosh pulled his head back, but with a surprised smile spreading across his craggy features. Spell never do that before!
    Casting lesser vigor, which should heal 12 points over the next 12 rounds, or 6 on Three. This spell has no material component, so the fact that Dergosh rubbed some swamp water that he is convinced is troll’s blood on Three’s face has no real effect.
    In Three’s damaged condition, all she was aware of was a large blue field with a stylized frowning face of an elf near the top. After she awakened, the face would remind her of her creator, but while she was disabled her body refused to spare the energy required to access her memory banks. At the bottom of the field, a percentage would race from zero to fifty and freeze before starting again at zero, and did so hundreds of times.
    Under the sad-face of Eron, but above the rising and falling number, were large blocky words. They were as white as can be, just like everything else laying in the blue field, and were oddly reminiscent of Three’s handwriting:
    You have ran into a problem and need to restart. I am collecting some error information, and then will attempt to restart you.
    For more information about this issue and possible fixes, visit your local artificer.
    Then, the field flashed a bright red, and the words “REROUTE: ALTERNATE POWER FOUND” appeared for the second time. The first time it appeared, it lasted only a moment, but increased the highest percentage the field’s number would reach from forty to fifty. The second time, the red flash lasted until the blue lights of Three’s eyes reignited and she could take in the area around her.
    After Three awoke, the first thing she was are of was the damage to her body. Millions of warning signals were darting up through her circuitry, screaming for her to tend to her frame. The second thing she was aware of was that her body was still repairing itself, even if only barely. The third was that she was trying to stand up in her wagon. A vague memory of words without image came to mind, of Dergosh screaming in her ear, and she understood why her body was moving. She looked at the half-orc and spoke faster than usual, out of worry for the Company and shock from her first experience with the Blue Field of Disablement. “Thank you, Dergosh. How is everyone else?”
    To quiet the signals racing from her caved-in chest, Three placed her right arm on it- causing the warnings the increase in intensity- and chanted one of the few infusions she could cast as quickly as a sorcerer could sling a spell, intent on repairing the damage the centipedes did to her body.
    Korlann smiles lightly as he returns to the cave, seeing the Warforged up and about once more. "Good to see you back with us, Three of Three," he comments as he sits down, a small hare in hand that he was fortunate enough to catch by surprise in the morning fog. Beginning his work of preparing his meal from the small amount of meat present, he says, "Once everyone's ready, we should head towards the hilltop, and see what can be found from there. Once we get our bearings, we'll probably want to head towards Oleg's again - we'll figure out our next move at that point." He grimaces for a moment, wincing in pain as his injured arm seems to seize for just a moment. "Dergosh, I don't suppose that you've got any spells that can help with poison? That thing's venom was more potent than you'd think from a big bug..."
    The mention of poison brought a sour taste to his mouth as he recalled the stings from the day before, and he spit on the ground. “Not for poison, but Cave Mother fix you up,” he said. Dergosh flexed his hands and grunted out a single syllable in the orc language. Once again a pair of huge claws materialized, seeming to roughly squeeze Korlann until they turned to a brittle powder and fell to the ground.
    ~~~

    Dergosh nodded in response to Three as she regained motion. Once she had completed the job of repairing herself, he pointed out the coins and gems that were tumbled around the bed of the wagon. “Bugs had money,” he said to her, “and some magic sticks, too. Ruk playing with them now,” he added, pointing to the kobold.

    Gakan was still in shock that he was even still alive. Though his newfound hatred of the outdoors was no less intense for it.

    "Um, so like, I don't suppose we could find somewhere that isn't trying to kill us? I mean, this whole adventure thing's great and all, but I'm not sure how much more wandering into angry death I can take. I'm really not cut out for this..."

    Kuros, after seeing Three up and about and repaired, lunges at the warforged and wraps it up in a six armed hug strong enough to make Three's frame creak. Kuros quickly releases the embrace and slaps Three on the back before scolding, "Don't be so reckless next time."

    Kuros then sets about packing up camp and readying for departure when he hears Gakan. "We should just need a little more time to scout the area fully, then we can head back to Oleg's, collect the bounty on the bandits, and hopefully gather some better supplies before heading out to recover Svetlana's ring from the gremlins."
