I have been to the VA in Columbia Missouri, Nashville, Tenn and Murphysboro Tenn, but I have not see this place in eitther of these three. What VA are you referring to?

Yeah, people that drive too slowly are a blight on our roadways. Particularly annoying is a particular pair of drivers that I'm sure you've encountered - one in the right lane, traveling (somewhat reasonably so) slightly below the speed limit, and one in the left lane, traveling (unreasonably so) less than one mile per hour faster, usually accompanied by 6-10 cars behind in the left lane desperately trying to just get on down the road.

Yes, but it's mileage pay not time pay, so getting stuck in traffic actually doesn't mean more money for me.

Fair enough. When I got paid for driving, it was by the hour, which worked out wonderfully when there was a traffic jam on I-95.

VA was short for "Virginia", and I'm quite confident that you've not been to the state of Virginia in any of those places. The Cane's I found was in Charlottesville, VA, though there may be others.

Also, on a barely related tangent, I really disliked Mission Impossible 3 when Tom Cruise was at the party and someone asked what he did and he started talking about how he analyzed traffic patterns, and started going into it. Like, they openly say they gave him that as a cover story because it was so boring people wouldn't press him on it. Because it sounded really interesting when he started talking about that. Whenever I hear about mechanics of traffic flow, it always sounds pretty awesome.

There's no job boring enough that no one will find it immensely fascinating.

Maybe a little late to the party, but I assume those with longer commutes either don't have to do it all the time (I don't) or they appreciate having a lot of space for whatever reason. And large lots aren't exactly always near employment opportunities. In other cases, they might be shopping for schools if they have kids. I was helping to run an open house last month for a new rental, and one of the selling points was in fact the school district.

Also, you people are mentioning strange fast food. I don't think a single one mentioned in this thread is on the West Coast other then Wendy's. And their twitter might be funny, but I'm still not eating there.

On the fast food discussion, my place of choice is now Mucho Burrito, which does really good burritos with build your own options. It's the new Subway in my opinion.

McDonalds only barely qualifies as a restaurant. As for A&W...I thought for some reason they weren't here, turns out, I've just never seen one since they aren't very close to me.

I really, really hate how they are forced to say "my pleasure" every time I say thank you. We in the South, dammit. You give me my receipt, I say thank you. Drink, thank you. Food, thank you. I know it's not your pleasure, I know you'll get in trouble if you don't say it every time, and I hate the people who came up with that idea.

I was aafraid at first thaatt A and W was gone from the west coast! back in he '60s my mother worked as a car hop at an A&W. she was a single teen age mother of 2 boys and 1 girl. My Mama's tough!

To be fair, that all depends on the particular employees. I've got several co-workers that are such a treat to everyone (including one who's like everyone's favorite grandmother - she's worked there for about fifty years now) and then others that are... not.

I seem to have a nack for branching into other people's areas of expertise in my work. We're putting together a new hardware test rig, the first rig for me to be working on right from scratch, and in principle, my work is just cobbling together a simple GUI and sending specified commands to specified measuring instruments. Or rather, it would be, but no one told me what those commands were supposed to be or which instruments I'm supposed to send them to, so instead I've spent the last few days poring over circuit schematics and reading technical manuals to try and figure it out myself. And naturally I discover both incorrectly wired circuits and usage of the wrong instruments for the wrong tasks, eventually ending with the hardware person responsible for the rig schematics in the first place just approaching me (sincerely) saying "can you please help designing this cable for me, since you seem to have a better grasp of how everything should be connected".

It's fun to branch out and test my mettle on new types of problems. Although it is pretty exhausting too. I've found that after hours of cross-checking wiring tables and data sheets, just context switching onto another project, something I normally do in just a matter of minutes, takes me at least half an hour of rebooting my brain...

I don't live too far off north, but the nights here are still very bright and no darkness to be seen; the darkest hour is just a rather mellow light blue.

This ended up with me last night not realising what the time is and going to bed at around 3 in the morning, half an hour before the official sunrise

I guess at least my internship ended and I'm on holiday? So yay, waking up at 14:00 shouldn't affect me? Oh no. Nope. I'm too old for this. My stomach is so angry at me for not keeping a solid schedule.
