Big data vs Pokemon

Interview question: Ask a candidate if ze's familiar with Jirachi. Does ze recognize that I'm actually talking about a pokemon? Or does ze bluff?
Tongue-in-cheek,

Or do they say, "Sorry, I'm not familiar with that, but am willing to learn."...

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
That's worse than asking a vendor whether his system is RFC 1149 compliant.
(Which could be interpreted as checking for tolerance of ridiculously long latencies.)

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
Reminds me of when, during a programming/program manager interview, I was asked, "What sort of music do you listen to?"
Still don't know if he was just interjecting casual conversation, was wanting to see how I responded to an unexpected question, or had some other reason. I heard -- not sure if joking or not -- that they asked it to the other interviewees as well, but it wasn't on the original list of questions.
Honestly, even if someone mentioned a Pokemon I knew, I'd assume it was also the name of some system or software I was ignorant of. Jirachi sounds like some Japanese software, or, well, an anime dude.

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
Not actually that hard - I got 100% with just enough knowledge of each to work out the naming conventions common to each.

78%. There were several where I thought "okay, I'm pretty sure Nintendo/Creatures/Gamefreak wouldn't use a name like that for a Pokemon, so it's gotta be big data, right?"

If brute force isn't working, that just means you're not using enough of it.

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
Yup, it's more or less a quiz of "Pokemon" vs. "Not Pokemon" and I think it's meant to illustrate the absurdity of how many of each there are.

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
I got 91%, and while a lot of them were pretty clear (particularly overt references to other things, e.g. Azkaban being a big data software or company) there were definitively enough that weren't to chip away at them, particularly the ones I didn't just recognize (a chunk of each, though a larger chunk for Pokemon).
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.
I'm not joking one bit. I would buy the hell out of that. -- ChubbyRain

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
Can't really figure that oen out. But "flink" does mean agile in Swedish. The squirrel I don't get.
Database nerds are Harry Potter nerds. You know they think of themselves as datawizards right?
A hilarious play on words with hummingbird. You know they still chuckle at that one everytime they use it and have good snort of their asthma-inhalers afterwards.
Don't know that one. Bet someone is starting it up as we type.
If there's isn't a group somewhere starting up "Really Big Data" I'll be sorely desillusioned with the field.Last edited by snowblizz; 2018-07-21 at 06:01 AM.

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
Considering that they only included Gen 1-
23 mons, it's possible for people who only tried playing Gen23 to get these correctly without being really into Pokémon. I mean I can't possibly be the only one who stopped playing/watching a good decade and a half ago (Gen 3), and still got a 100%.

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
I still much prefer "Ikea or Death!"
I use braces (also known as "curly brackets") to indicate sarcasm. If there are none present, I probably believe what I am saying; should it turn out to be inaccurate trivia, please tell me rather than trying to play along with an apparent joke I don't know I'm making.

Re: Big data vs Pokemon
Now see that one is super easy. Ironically only one I got wong is a chair I own 4 of.
That one won't challenge anyone in Sweden, not so much because many are familair with Ikea but that you cna tell if it's a proper name of a thing. Ikea uses Swedish placenames, given names and proper Swedish words for its items. Anything not clearly recognizable as a Swedish word was deathmetal.

17/20, and I've never listened to Metal. But then, there were several mythological creatures in there and a few words where I could guess what they mean.
